It’s the End of the World As We Know It…I Just Wish I Felt Fine

The times they are a-changin’. For the Cleveland Cavalier organization, everyone is experiencing change at a rate we’ve never seen before. The coach is gone. The GM is gone. The superstar? According to some (Wes) he is “leaning hard” toward leaving (for Chicago). The team is trying to trade some guys like Mo Williams and Delonte West, while letting other players like Zydrunas Ilgauskas and Shaquille O’Neal walk away.

Change is supposed to be a good thing. After all, it was Winston Churchill who once said “To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often.” There are literally thousands of similar famous quotes about the merits and value of change. So why, then, is there so much distress over all the change surrounding the Cavs when they’ve failed every time in their pursuit of a title? Is it possible that too much change is a bad thing?  [Read more...]

While We’re Waiting… Mike Brown’s Future, 2010 Draft Grades, and Calipari’s Defense

“Decision day hasn’t arrived yet but it appears everyone is preparing for it.

The Cavaliers had not performed or scheduled exit interviews with players or coaches as of Monday. Once some or all of those take place, there will be a verdict on coach Mike Brown. But if that decision is a parting of ways, the sides are getting ready for it.

According to sources, Brown and his coaching staff are preparing to be let go. Meanwhile, the front office and team owner Dan Gilbert are believed to be considering a list of possible replacements.” [Brian Windhorst]

While We’re Waiting… Indians Opening Day, Updated NFL Mock Draft and Buckeye Spring Football

An appropriately-named Tribe preview: “So where does this leave us, as Indians fans heading into the 2010 season?  Are we facing a season like 2003 or 2004?  I don’t think so.  I think we’re looking at 1992, coming off a truly awful season, with a bunch of promising talent in the farm system.  Only this time, there is no new stadium around the corner, and there is no economic boom on the horizon.  The Indians will not be hip in a few years; if we’re lucky, they’ll be edgy.  Just as surely as Jobu can’t hit a curveball, there is no revenue salvation coming in the next few years.  We will not have a top-five payroll, probably not even top ten.

So it’s gut-check time, my friends.  We may well have two 76-win seasons coming our way now, but they won’t be followed by a jump that brings us within 10% of the Yankees payroll.  If we win, it’ll only be because the moves our new GM made worked out really well, and that may or may not happen.” [Jay/Let's Go Tribe]

LeBron James Signs Extension

This is not an April Fools Joke. I know you think it is, but it’s not…..not exactly, anyway. It’s more of an ironic play on words that coincidentally falls on April 1. In case you haven’t heard, LeBron James and Nike have agreed on a long term contract extension. Terms of the deal have not been announced, but reports indicate it is another 7 year deal.

For Cavalier fans, this deal is a rare win in the game of reading LeBron’s words and actions for clues about his future. It’s a win because the deal does not contain a location clause which would escalate the value of the deal if LeBron signed with a team in a major market such as New York, Los Angeles, or Chicago. LeBron’s first deal with Nike, signed before he was even drafted, contained a clause which would have paid him more money had he signed a deal with a major market team in 2007 when he first could have become a restricted free agent.  [Read more...]

Better 2010 Winning Percentage: Acta vs. Mangini

Manny Acta Eric Wedge_med

Manny Acta is inheriting a team that went 65-97 – a .401 winning percentage.  The 2009 Cleveland Browns went 5-11 – a .312 winning percentage.  Many anticipate the 2010 Indians do be considerably worse than the team that took the field a season ago.  Some feel that the Browns should be able to improve off of their four-straight wins and take steps towards actually being a respectable football team on a consistent basis.

So, with that said – which coach experiences more success in 2010?

Shaquille O’Neal Wants Kobe and Carter to Join LeBron

Kobe Vince LeBron DunkWhen the list of participants for this year’s slam dunk contest was released, we wasted zero time in prepping Cavs fans for the outcry against LeBron James for not being among said list.  Naturally, it didn’t take long for some to claim that James went against his word - and by doing so, is showing that he is “too cool” to participate.  While this matter can be debated ad nauseum, James’ teammate Shaquille O’Neal thinks that he can solve the puzzle.

The “Big Promotor” wants to take things back to how they were – and how James envisioned them when he made his statements regarding the 2010 contest one year ago – by having NBA superstars take part in the festivities.  And the proceeds to the winner of the start-studded even would go to the nation of Haiti to further attempt relief efforts.  [Read more...]

90043133AB018_Cavs_WarriorsMid-season grades take on the Cavaliers offense: “This has been an underachieving facet so far, not using [Shaquille] O’Neal enough and failing to develop a late game bedrock routine like their defense has done. When the Cavs have lost, it is rarely because they were dominated. It is often because their offense let them down with self-inflicted wounds, like lack of ball movement or high-volume turnovers.

The team has some of the best shooters and 3-pointer shooters in the league — they rank high in the league in both categories. But seeing the difference in their first-quarter execution and fourth-quarter execution is a referendum on their mental toughness so far. Grade: C+.” [Brian Windhorst]

Josh Cribbs, Joe Thomas Named to 2010 Pro Bowl

2007 Browns Pro Bowl

In a football season that was often littered with negative news, GM firings, and trades of perceived core players, the Cleveland Browns will be sending two players to the 2010 Pro Bowl.  Return man-turned-wide receiver Joshua Cribbs as well as left tackle Joe Thomas will represent the Orange and Brown in Miami, Florida come January 31st.

The Pro Bowl appearance will be the second for Cribbs and the third for Thomas.  Both players earned the recognition in 2007 (along with a few others you may recognize) while Thomas was a representative last season as well.

Congratulations to both players.

While We’re Waiting… No Cowher in Carolina, Let LeBron Dance, and CSUs Norris Cole

cowher_hope_medNo Cowher in Carolina? “Current speculation is that some of the large bags of gold hand-delivered to Cowher’s home daily by Fox Sports executives might come available this off-season, as the Steelers coach looks to return to the sidelines. Furthermore, that speculation has Cowher landing in Carolina to coach the Panthers for the aforementioned real-estate reasons – namely, that’s somewhat close to where Cowher lives now.

For a lot of folks, that’s enough. Cowher lives in Carolina, he’s going to coach the Panthers. Game, set, match.  Since I don’t think a single real estate-based rumor has proven out in the ten years the OBR has been around, you’ll pardon our skepticism about this line of analysis.” [The OBR]

LeBron James To Become Mute on Free Agency Talk……Probably (Maybe?)

LeBron's MoratoriumAs if last night’s game with Orlando didn’t have enough talking points as it was (including a ridiculous discussion about LeBron’s Yankees shoes….but that’s another story for another time), LeBron James found a new way to keep his name in headlines with regards to his impending free agency. They say silence is golden, but can silence speak louder than words? LeBron is going to try to find out…..or so he says.

It’s not hard to believe that the non stop questions in every city is starting to wear on LeBron. We as fans are sick beyond belief with having to listen to the talk on every telecast, read every story about it on every major website every single day, and to have to listen to LeBron himself seemingly relish in the attention and spotlight. I’ve heard plenty of fans say ‘enough is enough already’, and now LeBron seems to finally agree with us.   [Read more...]

LeBron James: “Hopefully I can sign a big contract to stay in Cleveland.”

lebron-james-espn-mvpThe AP’s Tom Withers took time to document the last few weeks of LeBron James, catching up with him while in Akron for the MTAG tour as well as his Bike-a-thon.

If you are even a casual fan of the NBA, you are likely aware of the majority of the article.  LeBron’s ties to Akron.  His allegiance to his friends and family.  His goals of becoming a “global icon.”  I mean, James teamed up with Buzz Bissinger to discuss the exact same topics, and it is all encompassed by a documentary.

But as you make your way through the RockKing-eque word count, you find yourself taking away two of LBJ’s latest quotes.

From One 23 to Another…Stay In Cleveland

lebronjamespregame

Alright, I admit it. The headline may be a little misleading. Still, Michael Jordan was asked recently about LeBron James and his impending free agency. I was a bit surprised to hear that Jordan said anything about it at all, considering his involvement with the Bobcats. But Jordan, speaking to a New York Daily News reporter, had this to say-

“He’s made his mark in Cleveland. I know New York fans would love to have him, but you need a lot more components than just one player. He’s done a heck of a job in Cleveland and they deserve to have him there. He’s from that area. In terms of the game itself, small markets can benefit from it a lot more than the big markets can. That’s not a discredit to New York at all.”

This is of course nothing we haven’t been saying for months- even years, but it is nice to have Jordan on our side for once.

Addressing the Mike Brown Rumors

mike-brownIf you haven’t seen them, you likely will. Sam Amico is reporting today that the Cavalier front office is split on the future of coach Mike Brown. The piece included opinions from sources not willing to quoted.

“The Cavaliers’ front office has reportedly been in disarray since the team was bounced by Orlando in the Eastern Conference finals — despite finishing with a league-best record of 66-16 and possessing NBA MVP LeBron James.

Some key members of the organization feel Brown was badly out-coached by Orlando’s Stan Van Gundy, according to sources. One source said Cavs management wasn’t only disappointed in the losses, “but equally disappointed in the (two) wins” in a series that went six games.”

Brian Windhorst went on the offensive (or I guess the defensive) this morning to let Cavs fans know that he feels the report(s) are flawed. According to Windhorst- [Read more...]

Oh ye of the MVP debate:  ”According to PER, the top 5 players – in order, are LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Paul, Dwight Howard and Kobe Bryant.  [...]  Now, I know your answer is, “but Kobe plays in the tougher conference.”  Except, he doesn’t.  In years past that was true, but now the East is the tougher conference.  I know it doesn’t look like that given that the East has two teams with losing records in the top 8 and the West will have a team at close to a 60% win-loss record who doesn’t make the playoffs.  However, it is the teams below that that artificially inflate the West. The worst team in the NBA (Sacramento) and 6 of the 7 worst teams overall play in the West.” [Lang Whitaker/SLAMOnline]

Here Come More LeBron James Rumors

lebron-james-dwyane-wadeI have to give credit where credit is due.  A few months ago, this story would have likely been a top billing headline on most websites.  But as the Cavaliers have continued to roll through the opposition by winning their ninth straight game yesterday evening, the latest “rumors” have taken a back seat.

Though I have no problem taking credit away when it is undeserved.  As in today, with the NBA playoffs a few weeks away.  Three teams in the East, just shy of 60 wins.  Seven teams in the West, separated by four games.  Some of the best players to ever play the game, all under the age of 28.

But what gets thrown our way?

You got it.  More rumors about 2010.

Nike LeBron James Zoom VI “Taxi Cab” Edition

Most of you are well aware the Cavaliers are squaring off against the New York Knicks tonight in Madison Square Garden.  And while we have seen a bit of a decline in “LeBron 2010″ talk over the past few weeks, I am pretty sure that Nike’s new sneaker release will help stir things back up.  If you aren’t one for the Yankee hat or Cowboys t-shirt, you may just want to stop reading.  Don’t say I didn’t warn you…

Choose Your Own Adventure…Cleveland Style

It certainly is a great time to be a Cavalier fan. Confidence and expectations are at an all time high. Most experts agree that the Cavs are certainly capable of winning the whole thing this year, bringing Cleveland it’s first NBA championship, and first major title since the Browns back in 1964. Not even the shadow of LeBron’s impending free agency is big enough to block out the brilliance of this team. Or is it?

I have a question for you. Well, a scenario really. The best possible outcome for Cleveland fans would be the Cavs winning the Finals this year or next with LeBron deciding to stay put, culminating in a Jordan-like 4 or 5 championship banners hanging from the rafters of the Q, and a statue in the plaza. But let’s just say for argument sake we can’t have that scenario. [Read more...]

Windhorst: LeBron Will Consider Re-Signing Before 2010

Huge news, which you may have saw scroll across the bottom of ESPN last night, out of Brian Windhorst:

The summer of 2010 is indeed shaping up to be a wild one on the NBA free-agent scene.

But there’s a chance LeBron James may just skip the party.

The Great Spending Spree of 2010

Cleveland Cavaliers GM Danny Ferry is going to have his hands full in the summer of 2010. We try to figure out exactly how much money Ferry will have to spend on free agents in the “Summer of Truth” for the Cavaliers.

When the Akron Beacon Journal’s Patrick McManamon recently wrote about the possibility of the Cavs signing two megastars in the summer of 2010, it lit up the blogosphere. And with good reason. With still over a month until preseason games begin, and with little going on in free agency or trades at this point, it left us all with precious little to write about. So it’s only natural that such a speculative piece would be so widely covered.

With that in mind, I began to think about Patrick’s article. I wondered how realistic it really was. The one thing Patrick neglected to mention in his piece was the NBA’s “Free Agent Amount” cap charge. The basis of this rule is that a team’s free agents continue to count against the cap until either the team renounces their rights to the player, the player signs with the same team, or the player signs with another team. In other words, even though he’s a free agent in 2010, LeBron James will still count towards the Cavalier’s team salary and thus will freeze up some of that cap space Patrick was talking about.

Even considering LeBron’s Free Agent Amount, it would still appear the Cavaliers would have a lot of money to spend, but exactly how much? That’s what I wanted to look into, and so I decided to do a little research for all of us to come up with maybe a more realistic idea of what the Cavalier’s free agent situation will look like in that monumental summer of 2010.    [Read more...]
