Browns Practice Squad, Plus Waiver Pickups

Everyone in the Browns media is reporting it so we’ll go with Nate Ulrich who had the most descriptive tweets. Ulrich reports the following players are on the Browns’ practice squad.

Linebackers Solomon Elimimian and Ben Jacobs
DT Ronnie Cameron
C Garth Gerhard
G Jarrod Shaw
T Jeff Shugarts
WR Josh Cooper
FB Brad Smelley

That’s eight, so that’s it. No Adonis Thomas and I haven’t seen his name pop up yet for anyone else either.

In addition, the Browns have been awarded Lineback Tank Carder from Buffalo and Defensive Tackle Ishmaa’ily Kitchen from Baltimore.

Carder is a former member of TCU. Kitchen is a 334 pound monster from Kent State.

I believe this means the Browns will have two more cuts forthcoming as the waiver pickups aren’t eligible for the practice squad. I think they have to make the 53-man roster. So, we’ll keep you updated as details come out.

Cleveland Browns Preseason Game #4: Winners and Losers

Who caught your eye? Did someone stand out? Who blew it? That’s what were interested in this morning. Winners and losers.

Well, that was….not…really…that good.

With cuts coming sometime today (deadline is 9pm), the Browns got their final look at several players last night. What they saw might not have been very impressive.

WINNER: Brandon Jackson. Jackson looked strong and determined running the ball. He even seemed to be enjoying himself out there. Of course, Jackson really wasn’t fighting for a roster spot. I bet he is getting more and more fans in the coaches office for the 3rd down back duties. [Read more...]

A Farewell to Armond Smith

I don’t know if it is unique to Cleveland that Armond Smith could be such a big topic of conversation, but it sure feels that way. Smith was cut in favor of Adonis Thomas yesterday after apparently getting beat out in rookie camp with shorts on. This morning on Kiley and Booms I heard Bud Shaw once again mention that at least we wouldn’t see Pat Shurmur running Armond Smith on 4th and 1 again. It goes to show that the more I mature, just how far I still have to go because it made me angry. I know Bud was just going for an easy punchline, but let’s not re-write history here.

First of all, I need to talk about a comedy rule of three that I have been obsessed with lately. I heard Aziz Ansari talk about it and I think he was paraphrasing Joe Rogan. Or maybe he was paraphrasing Louis C.K.’s appearance on Joe Rogan’s podcast? Anyway, I am continuing the game of telephone and paraphrasing the paraphraser. The idea in writing jokes is that you have to go three levels for truly good and original comedy. When a topic comes up, the first thought you have is the joke that everyone comes up with. The second joke is better than the first, but it is still probably a bit facile. The third joke will be truly original. It isn’t a hard, fast rule, but that’s the idea. References aren’t jokes and are rarely good punchlines. Using Armond Smith’s run on 4th and 1 is quite simply the first crack available and as I think I proved it is nothing more than just second-guessing the coach because it happened not to work.

So let’s get back to that play one final time as we bid farewell to a 4th string running back that won’t even be a footnote in Cleveland Browns history. [Read more...]

Browns Roster News: Armond Smith Cut, Toledo RB Adonis Thomas Signed

The Cleveland Browns made a series of roster moves on Monday afternoon, cutting running back Armond Smith and signing Toledo rusher Adonis Thomas. Smith’s distinguished Browns career comes to close with three carries for two yards in three games last season.

Thomas attended this past weekend’s rookie minicamp on a tryout and apparently impressed the powers that be which led to Monday’s signing. He rushed for over 1,000 yards the past two seasons playing for the Rockets in the MAC. In addition to Thomas, the Browns also signed JoJo Dickson, a linebacker from Idaho who’s been signed and waived twice by the Jacksonville Jaguars.
