While We’re Waiting… Keith Dambrot’s sensational story

While We’re Waiting serves as the early morning gathering of WFNY-esque information for your viewing pleasure. Have something you think we should see? Send it to our tips email at tips@waitingfornextyear.com.

This was a great story. Another little-known fact in Keith Dambrot’s amazing journey? He coached my brothers’ Jewish Community Center CYO team in the late ’90s, just before latching on with LeBron James at St. V-M, then heading back to Akron. What a coach: “Dambrot is driven by routine and superstition, and these walks are driven by his desire to still be making them almost decade from now. He’s 54, and he signed a 10-year extension with his alma mater last summer. He’s come face to face with his coaching mortality once, and before he hands off the reigns at Akron he wants to continue to both figuratively raise the ceiling for the program and, sometime soon, literally stick the shovel in the ground for a new arena.” [Zac Jackson/FOX Sports Ohio] [Read more...]

Box Score: White Sox 9, Indians 0

The Indians (68-94) season has come to a woeful, merciless end. In a game as fitting as possible for this entire season, the White Sox (85-77) poured on 16 hits, led by three homers from backup first baseman Dan Johnson (his first HRs of the season), in a complete thrashing of the Tribe.

The next time you see Cleveland baseball, there likely will be plenty of changes to the lineup and the coaching staff. Oh, and Travis Hafner popped out to White Sox 3B Jose Lopez in the ninth. That seems ironic, doesn’t it?

Box Score: White Sox 11, Indians 0

While the White Sox claimed a big victory today, the Indians already had knocked Chicago out of playoff contention last week. Detroit’s Monday night victory clinched the AL Central for the Tigers, accomplishing an impressive September comeback to win the worst division in baseball.

And, oh yeah, the Indians lost badly on Monday. They managed just two hits and one walk while striking out 12 times against the fearsome trio of Hector Santiago, Jesse Crain and Leyson Septimo.

Only two games remain now for the Tribe (67-93) in 2012, who secured their third season with less than 70 wins since 2009. They’re one of only 5 MLB teams (Kansas City, NY Mets, Pittsburgh, Houston) to not have a .500 record or better during these four years.

Box Score: Indians 15, Royals 4

This is very typical Cleveland, right? A day after losing their 90th game of the season, the Indians rallied back to score 15 runs today against the Royals. Seven of those runs came in a hectic top of the ninth inning.

The stars of the game: starter David Huff and the six players that collected at least two hits, led by Carlos Santana’s two homers. Yeah, whoever thought that sentence was possible in the first half of this season?

With the victory, the Indians (63-90) ensure that they will not lose 100 games this season. Win-win.

Sunday Tribe Notes: Indians Look to Avoid Another Sweep, Aeros Claim Eastern League Title Again

Isn’t it unbelievable to consider that the Cleveland Indians are 9-8 against the Detroit Tigers this season? Think of all of the things that had to go right for that to occur.

Yes, it kind of makes some sense when you hear that Detroit has won five of seven since the Indians’ latest six-week nose dive, but it’s still an unbelievable fact.

It means that even if the Tribe falls today – which would mark a scintillating seventh series sweep since July 26 – they’d still perfectly finish at .500 against the superstar-heavy Tigers.

After today’s contest at Progressive Field – which many have called Comerica Park this weekend because of the lack of Cleveland noise and influx of Motor City fans – the Indians will have 15 games remaining in 2012. It’d be a huge miracle if the team even manages 70 wins, a crazy concept if you had asked me on July 26 when we were 50-49. [Read more...]

Box Score: Tigers 4, Indians 0

So this one was pretty much over in the first inning, right? Justin Verlander against Corey Kluber isn’t really fair, and after Detroit scored 2 in the first, then 2 more in the second, this one was over.

Kudos to the bullpen — Chris Seddon and Frank Herrmann — at least, for settling the score at that. But Verlander went a very solid seven innings and the abysmal Indians offense couldn’t muster anything.

Box Score: Blue Jays 3, Indians 0

The Indians faltered again today in a rubber match against the Blue Jays. Toronto scored three times against Derek Lowe in the third, and that was all the offense for the day.

The bats were miserable again today, with the team mustering just five hits and five walks total. Yet again, there were several wasted opportunities and some truly awful at-bats by the bottom of the lineup.

Cleveland now goes off to Tampa Bay for four games this week before returning home Friday to take on Baltimore. Hooray for lots of doses of the AL East right after the All-Star Break.

Scoring Summary

- C. Rasmus singled to shallow center, J.P. Arencibia scored
- A. Lind walked, C. Rasmus scored, J. Bautista to third, E. Encarnacion to second

Indians’ Struggles By The Numbers

Taking a page from Rick’s book today, I’m here with some illustrious stats about the Cleveland Indians. These aren’t the prettiest, so you might want to spare your kids from seeing these.

-51 – Indians’ run differential this season, sixth-worst in MLB. The team with the sixth-worst record is Houston at 32-43 (.427).

12-3 (.800) – CLE’s record in one-run games, the best percentage-wise in MLB. Baltimore is second-best at 13-6 (.684). This might explain how the team is shockingly still at .500 on the season. For comparison’s sake, no team has finished with a win percentage better than .636 in one-run games over the past three seasons.

10-9 (.526) – Indians’ record in two-run games, tied for 12th-best percentage-wise in MLB. San Francisco is best at 11-5 (.688). While this isn’t sensational, it’s still above average. [Read more...]

Yankees 5, Indians 4: Welcome Back to the Land of .500

That was an unbelievable home run by Robinson Cano. Down a run in the sixth, 1-2 count against one of the hotter starters in the AL Central 1 , and he blasts one off the end of his bat for a two-run homer to the opposite field.

Can we just focus on that part of the game, please? Because with that one swing the Yankees deserved to win this contest.

But, of course, all anyone is talking about is how the Indians stranded the bases loaded in the ninth inning to end the game. So while this wasn’t as ugly a game as the last four losses, this one sure was more heartbreaking.

With the loss, Cleveland fell back to .500 on the season at 37-37, and now sits 2.5 games behind the White Sox following their victory last night.

  1. Yes, Ubaldo Jimenez was pitching that well recently before Wednesday’s game. Entering play, he was 2-1 with a 2.05 ERA in four June starts since being skipped once in the rotation. Most importantly, however, he had 25 strikeouts against only seven walks in 26.1 innings pitched. Sounds like ace material to me, although in a small sample size. [back]

Box Score: Indians 3, Twins 6

Weren’t you looking forward to this weeklong home stand against the Royals and Twins? I certainly was, and this 2-4 result definitely was not what I was hoping for.

The Indians fell to 28-25 with the loss today, and now enter one of their most difficult stretches of the season leading up to the All-Star Break. Justin Masterson was again mediocre, Jason Kipnis went 0-for-4 and the Tribe managed just three unearned runs against Minnesota lefty Scott Diamond. Stay tuned tomorrow as I’m sure TD will be extra joyous about this one.

Box Score: Indians 4, Twins 7

Josh Tomlin had a rough start early, and although the Tribe caught up to tie it at 4-4, the team lost energy from there. The Twins held on to win game two of this series at Progressive Field, thanks to a big day at the plate from Joe Mauer and a stellar catch from Ben Revere in the ninth inning.

The Indians will definitely need tomorrow’s game in order to save face in the AL Central. You can’t lose an entire series to one of the worst teams in the majors and expect to keep competing the playoff race, especially with the upcoming difficult schedule set to begin soon.

While We’re Waiting… Competing in the AL Central, More ID Fraud Coming and a Brian Sipe Sighting

While We’re Waiting serves as the early morning gathering of WFNY-esque information for your viewing pleasure. Have something you think we should see? Send it to our tips email at tips@waitingfornextyear.com.

The only division we can compete in? “Outside of the Fielder deal, while teams in the other divisions have improved, the teams in the AL Central this offseason have done very little to make themselves much better. The Royals and Twins have made a few nice signings, but nothing big or that will put them over the top. Like the Indians, the biggest boost to them will be health and the development of their internal players. The White Sox are in sell mode and are retooling and are not considered to be a major factor in the division this season.

Even with the Tigers continuing to add big pieces in the past year, the Indians should thank their lucky stars they are not in the AL East or AL West as they would almost have no chance every year unless they hit on a bunch of young very good players at one time like the Rays. Beating the “buyers” over a 162 game season is a tough task, but the Indians have never had to really worry about that too much in the AL Central.” [Tony/Indians Prospect Insider" [Read more...]

MLB Trade News: Tigers Get Delmon Young From Twins

In a rare trade within the division, the Detroit Tigers acquired Delmon Young from the Minnesota Twins for a single A pitcher and the nearly ubiquitous player to be named later.  According to the Detroit Free Press, Young will be in the lineup tonight and playing left field and batting third for the Tigers, who are playing the Twins. Young is having a down year compared to last season, but that can be said of the entire Minnesota Twins team.  The same can also be said of aging Tiger Magglio Ordonez, who at age 37 is batting only 0.223 with 4 home runs and under 0.300 on-base percentage.

I honestly don’t know much about Cole Nelson, the player Detroit traded to Minnesota and obviously the PTBNL is currently still a mystery, but it seems like a measured, aggressive move for the Detroit Tigers as they sit atop the division looking to hold off the Indians and White Sox.

Meanwhile, the Indians will have to continue trying to get healthy and improve from within if they have any hopes of catching the Tigers who are currently 2.5 games in front.

Now, enjoy this video of Delmon Young throwing his bat at an umpire… [Read more...]

Hot Start, Schmott Schtart: What do the Indians’ First Ten Games Mean?

I’ve been out of town for several days.  Has anything happened with the Indians while I was gone?

I kid, I kid.  Luckily, my brother’s cable company was running an MLBTV special that allowed me to enjoy—albeit over the protests of his family—the Indians’ recent run of dominance.  Strong starting pitching.  Timely hitting.  Nifty glovework.  Pronk sightings and PureRage fury balls.  It’s been quite fun.

So is this it?  Is this what we’ve been waiting for?  Is it ‘next year’ already? [Read more...]

Combing Through the Detritus: Part 2

On Tuesday we began looking back at the 2010 Indians by comparing them to the 2009 squad.  After many charts (way too many charts), our conclusion was twofold: (1) that the 2010 team, despite having a better final record, was actually less talented than the 2009 version (i.e. they produced fewer wins above replacement); and (2) that the position players were largely to blame for that decrease.

Here’s the first chart that got me going on so many tangents:

2009 2010
Position Player WAR 18.8 9.8
Pitcher WAR 11.0 9.4
TOTAL WAR 29.8 19.2

And because the decrease in pitching talent was fairly minor—a drop from 11.0 WAR in 2009 to 9.4 in 2010—I focused a good deal of my energy on those position players.  We explored the many poor offensive and defensive performances, with only a footnote about the pitching staff’s woes.

You didn’t think I’d let them get off that easily, did you? [Read more...]

Indians 7, Royals 1: Still Avoiding AL Central Division Last Place!

The end of the baseball season means that you have to find small things to cheer about. If you are still contending for the playoffs, it’s about making sure you can secure that spot before resetting the rotation. For the Cleveland Indians however, it’s just about finishing above whomever possible.

Thanks to yet another offensive display courtesy of Shin-Soo Choo, the Indians helped their cause again Saturday night with a 7-1 victory over the Royals. The club is now 4-2 against the Royals in the month of September, leading by a slim half game for the AL Central Division’s fourth place.

Only seven more games now remain in the 2010 season and although certainly playoff chances are entirely over, the Indians are finding their own unique competition. Belting 11 hits in less than four innings against Zack Greinke alone, the Tribe moved back into the drivers seat for not-last place. Follow along after the jump for more news and notes:

Indians Rally for 5-4 Extra Inning Victory over Twins

The Indians keep chugging along with their back-and-forth play this season. With game one of the Cavaliers second round series against the Celtics going on at the exact same time, you really didn’t expect much fan support for the Tribe last night.  Playing the first-place Twins on game two of a week-long home stand, it seemed unlikely as well that it could be a double victory night in downtown Cleveland.

Justin Masterson started slow and it certainly looked that way early. Minnesota jumped out to an early 3-0 lead before most fans had even finished their Dollar Dogs, and it looked like a typical blowout for this season. For once though, the Indians did their very best to upstage their neighbors from across the street, showing their dramatic side in a heroic comeback. Led by timely hitting from the top of the batting order and some re-energized pitching, the Indians rallied for a 5-4 win in 11 innings last night.

An appropriately-named Tribe preview: “So where does this leave us, as Indians fans heading into the 2010 season?  Are we facing a season like 2003 or 2004?  I don’t think so.  I think we’re looking at 1992, coming off a truly awful season, with a bunch of promising talent in the farm system.  Only this time, there is no new stadium around the corner, and there is no economic boom on the horizon.  The Indians will not be hip in a few years; if we’re lucky, they’ll be edgy.  Just as surely as Jobu can’t hit a curveball, there is no revenue salvation coming in the next few years.  We will not have a top-five payroll, probably not even top ten.

So it’s gut-check time, my friends.  We may well have two 76-win seasons coming our way now, but they won’t be followed by a jump that brings us within 10% of the Yankees payroll.  If we win, it’ll only be because the moves our new GM made worked out really well, and that may or may not happen.” [Jay/Let's Go Tribe]

Kevin Kaduk and David Brown continue their MLB previews with this long-winded conversation about the American League Central Division: “I’d like to pick the Cleveland Indians higher. Or maybe I need to get higher to pick the Cleveland Indians. One or the other. The Tribe has some very intriguing young players. Matt LaPorta and Michael Brantley are on the verge of something, they hope. I like Lou Marson a lot behind the plate and even if he’s not so good, Carlos Santana awaits in the high minors. Chris Perez has closer’s stuff — which is good, because Kerry Wood’s annual trip to the disabled list has already begun.” [Big League Stew]

On that note as well, take a look at this nice article about how 2010 shapes up with 2009: “With opening day just a weekend away, here is a comparison to this year’s (likely) opening day roster compared to a year ago (when hope was still alive in the world).” [APV/Let's Go Tribe]
