As late as Thursday night, Browns’ head coach Pat Shumur expressed excitement about the 37 players who were set to partake in this weekend’s rookie minicamp in Berea. Then, on Friday morning, only 36 took the field with former Ohio State linebacker Andrew Sweat noticeably absent. The club did not release any details on why Sweat was missing from the first workout, and Shumur addressed it to the media in the afternoon, announcing that Sweat had decided not to play in the NFL.
Sweat had been accepted to multiple law schools and was coming off a senior season in which he dealt with a concussion and an elbow injury. But he was still one of the first undrafted free agents signed by the Browns, and he expressed his excitement to the Plain Dealer’s Doug Lesmerises about the prospects of competing in camp with the Browns. Now it appears that he has decided to end his football career.
