Flashbacks: Antawn Jamison returns to Cleveland

When the Los Angeles Lakers arrived in Cleveland, it was familiar ground to Antawn Jamison. The veteran forward returned to Cleveland for the first time since leaving as a free agent this past summer, but it wasn’t Quicken Loans Arena that gave him the chills — it was the bitter December Cleveland weather that smacked him in the face when he got off of the team plane.

Admittedly spoiled by the L.A. sun, it didn’t take long for the memories to begin to funnel through Jamison’s head as he traveled down Euclid Avenue to the team hotel. While many of his memories from his time in Clevealnd are ones he would gladly forget if given the chance, the two-and-a-half years he spent with the Cavaliers are ones that left him with no regrets.

“It will hit me later on when there are familiar faces with the guys on the other end, but this was time well spent here,” said Jamison. “I had a great time even though it was tough in terms of wins and losses, but just the people who were here with me that helped me along the way.”

Jamison: I love Cleveland, but Los Angeles is unbelievable

I love Mike (Brown) to death and don’t know what the situation would’ve presented itself had he stayed but for me I’m one of those guys where first of all just give me the opportunity to be on the court for an extended period of time and eventually I will find a way to contribute but it was difficult for me to come in the game and my only three or four shots were threes and I’m a guy that needs to get into a rhythm with tip ins, slashing to the basket or pick and pops or things of that nature. [...] It’s unbelievable in Los Angeles. I love the fans and the people of Cleveland but it’s nothing like playing here in Los Angeles. Great weather, restaurants, there’s always something to do. In Cleveland, when it becomes November and December, the only thing you can do is try to win basketball games and watch television.

– Former Cleveland Cavaliers power forward Antawn Jamison, Tuesday, in an interview with ESPN Los Angeles with Mason and Ireland. Jamison’s play with the Lakers has improved substantially since the hiring of Mike D’Antoni. He was the Cavs’ second-leading scorer behind point guard Kyrie Irving in 2011-12.

Report: Cavs discussing sign and trade of Antawn Jamison

According to Marc J. Spears the Cleveland Cavaliers have had talks with the Nets about signing and trading Antawn Jamison. Spears also mentions that Golden State and Charlotte are in the mix too, whatever that might mean, exactly.

Jamison went from being considered a piece of the puzzle to an awkward veteran personality on an obviously rebuilding team. If the reports are true, it would be nice for the Cavaliers to be able to book-end Jamison’s time in Cleveland as one of the pieces of the future by getting something that will help them moving forward.

It should work for Jamison as well. A sign-and-trade should presumably get him more money than what some of these cap-strapped teams might be able to offer him via exceptions and veteran minimums.

A Cavalier Conversation: NBA Draft, Free Agency, Playoffs

The NBA is in full steam, and to celebrate the occasion, I brought along my brother Sam Rosen (@sjrosen18) to chat about some of the hot topics going on right now. Hope y’all enjoy our takes on topics ranging from the NBA Draft to the Cavs’ offseason and the playoffs.

1. Assuming that Anthony Davis, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist and Bradley Beal are the first three picks in order, what should the Cleveland Cavaliers do with the No. 4 pick?

Sam: Harrison Barnes is the logical pick at 4 assuming these three are off the board. Touted as the next big thing coming out of high school, Barnes never lived up to the ridiculous hype he faced at North Carolina. Hype is one thing, but pure talent is another. His size (6-8, 220 lbs.), his age (19 as of this writing), and his overall raw talent warrant a selection in the top 5 of any draft class. Barnes has all the tools to become an elite SF at the NBA level, and with proper coaching and a few years of seasoning, he could end up being the best player in this draft.

Cavaliers will not be a player in free agency according to Tom Reed

On yesterday’s Bull and Fox show, the Plain Dealer’s Tom Reed said that the Cavaliers will NOT be players in free agency this summer.

“No, not at all. The only types of guys that they will bring in here, is if they feel that their leadership may be lacking, maybe they bring in kind of a smaller name type player. They will not put any significant money into free agency. When they do that it will be more like a final piece… they are not going to overpay anybody.”

The Cavaliers have just under $18 million coming off the books with the expiration of Jamison and Parker’s contracts. They could also save $4.72 million if they choose not to pick up Daniel Gibson’s option. Small forward Alonzo Gee will also be a restricted free agent.

While We’re Waiting… Browns’ Curious Calls, Cavs’ Departures, Bryce Stowell Emerges

While We’re Waiting serves as the early morning gathering of WFNY-esque information for your viewing pleasure. Have something you think we should see? Send it to our tips email at tips@waitingfornextyear.com.

Very strong arguments made in this recap of the Browns drafting so far: “Do you know what we found out today? The front office must be pretty content sticking with the likes of Greg Little, Joshua Cribbs, Mohamed Massaquoi, and Jordan Norwood at wide receiver for another year. … Position-wise, there is nothing wrong with taking a defensive tackle. Phil Taylor and Ahtyba Rubin are the clear starters, but both of them, particularly Rubin, has been overworked in his young career.” [Chris Pokorny/Dawgs By Nature]

Looking back to Thursday night, at least some optimism still reigns: “Giving up three “precious” mid-to-late-round picks for Trent Richardson was easy math. The Browns need quality over quantity, particularly on offense. Getting the best running back in the draft, an impact guy who won’t even turn 21 until July, is more than worth a few picks who would likely serve as depth for their first year or two of service, should they pan out at all.” [Doug/Cleveland Sports Torture]

Byron Scott’s recent quote hesitation has a former WFNY weekend scribe thinking about what could be the future for two upcoming Cavs free agents: “It was that fourth “if” that had me standing there thinking that maybe it’s possible one of these two guys do come back next season afterall. Hopefully that’s Jamison then, I thought, in a reserve role off the bench where he provides a scoring punch and veteran leadership as a sixth or seventh man on a one-year $5 million deal. Because there’s now way he can be referring to the possibility of bringing Anthony Parker back next season with all those “if’s”, right?” [Brendan Bowers/Stepien Rules]

Some instant analysis on what it means for the Cavs in winning the coin tosses Friday: “This may not seem like a huge deal, but to me, it is. In my opinion (which could be changed as I watch more and more film as the draft approaches), there are six really good players in this draft. Those players are Anthony Davis, Bradley Beal, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, Thomas Robinson, Harrison Barnes, and Andre Drummond. After that, it gets a bit murky. By having a top-6 pick guaranteed, the Cavaliers can draft one of those players if their board is similar to mine.” [Conrad Kaczmarek/Fear The Sword]

One of my favorite basketball blogs makes a great point about ESPN’s role in stopping tanking: “However, television companies could take another route. They could refuse to put up with tanking. What if after a certain mark in the season (how about the All-Star break, we use it for everything) TV stations are allowed replace “bad games” and the team they replace doesn’t get paid?” [Dre/Wages of Wins]

Great to read more about this prospect re-emerging with the Tribe: “It is early, but it looks like Double-A Akron right-handed reliever Bryce Stowell is back to the dominating pitcher he was during the 2010 season. Stowell, 25, has been near-perfect and flat out dominating in the early going at Akron where in four appearances covering 7.0 innings he has yet to allow a run and has given up three hits, no walks, and has 15 strikeouts.” [Tony Lastoria/Indians Prospect Insider]

To end today, Kyle Dodson, an incoming freshman offensive tackle from Cleveland Heights, said the recent Sporting News report on Urban Meyer was filled with lies. This quote was particularly poignant: “‘No they did not. I do not know where they come up with these lies; they are probably making them up so they can attract readers for their publication.’” [Michael Chung/The Silver Bullet]

Antawn’s Closing Advance

Antawn Jamison led a precession of bodies down the history-laced hallway that stretches from the Cleveland Cavaliers’ locker room to the players’ parking garage in the lower bowels of Quicken Loans Arena. Sauntering slowly, Jamison kept both thumbs tucked under the straps of the over-sized backpack which housed his personalia; his New York Yankees hat branded with an “AJ4″ on the right side, pulled down close to his brow. Trailed by three close friends, Jamison approached dozens of fans waiting by the arena’s exit with hopes of getting the veteran’s autograph.

Following right behind was rookie point guard Kyrie Irving. Also surrounded by a handful of friends and family, the two players arrived to a pocket of fans who were seemingly benevolent to the fact that their team had just dropped their 44th game of a compressed season, an 11-point loss to the Washington Wizards, this one on what was dubbed Fan Appreciation Night.

Jamison and Irving took to the Wine and Gold mob with markers in hand, leaving nothing but din and smiles and stories for tomorrow’s school day in their wake. The alpha and omega of the New Expression Cavaliers. [Read more...]

Box Score: Spurs 114, Cavaliers 98

The Cavaliers competed, but in the end, they were no match for a San Antonio Spurs team that looks poised for a deep playoff run. The Spurs shot 55% and connected on eight three pointers as they defeated the Cavaliers 114-98 in the AT&T Center. The Spurs were led by their bench of Manu Ginobili (20 points, 9-of-12 shooting) and Stephen Jackson (17 points) as their bench outscored the Cavaliers’ bench 62-27. Antawn Jamison paced the Cavaliers with 21 points, and their starting backcourt shined with Kyrie Irving adding 19 points and Manny Harris posting 14. The Cavaliers are now 21-42 on the season and face the Grizzlies in Memphis tomorrow night.

Elias: Jamison Matches Career Mark

Matching or setting career marks during the waning years of a lengthy career is difficult for any athlete to accomplish, but Cleveland Cavaliers power forward Antawn Jamison did just that in Friday’s win over the Toronto Raptors.

In scoring 16 fourth-quarter points, Elias Sports bereau tells us that this matches the most points Jamison has ever scored in the final quarter of a game. The veteran also scored 16 fourth quarter points on for Golden State at Houston on March 10, 2001, for Washington at Boston on January 25, 2006 and for Washington at New Jersey on April 7, 2007.

In his second full season with the Cavs, Jamison is averaging 17.6 points and 6.5 rebounds per game, both averages good enough for second-best on the Cleveland roster.

Cavs end skid, finally figure out Raptors 84-80

No one would’ve blamed the Cavs for losing to the Toronto Raptors on Friday night. Coming off nine straight losses, missing their starting point guard, shooting guard and center and playing without their coach (who got himself thrown out before halftime), it would’ve been easy for this team to sleepwalk through another late season loss.

But Antawn Jamison and newly signed PG Lester Hudson wouldn’t let the Cavs quit. Trailing 63-52 after three periods, Jamison opened the fourth by scoring 15 of the Cavs first 17 points and the Cavs somehow found themselves in a tied 68-68 with six minutes to play.

Thus begins the Legend of Lester Hudson.

The recently signed D-Leaguer, who doesn’t seem to care about the Cavs draft position at all, scored 8 points over the final four minutes to lead the Cavs to their first win against the Raptors in four tries. Jamison’s hot shooting woke up the Cavs and got them back in game and Hudson provided the energy the they needed to close it out. Hudson finished with 23 points, seven assists, three steals, two boards and just one turnover in 32 minutes and he hit all six of his free throws down the stretch.

Some random thoughts after the jump.

Box Score: Cavs 84, Raptors 80

It took a bunch of D-Leaguers and Coach Byron Scott getting thrown, but the Cavs finally managed to beat the Toronto Raptors (though it’s more accurate to say that the Cavs stole this game.) Cleveland trailed 63-52 after three quarters, looking lifeless and well on their way to their 10th consecutive loss. But a combination of Lester Hudson’s energy (23 points, 7 assists), Toronto’s laziness and Antawn Jamison’s 16 point(!) fourth quarter earned the Cavs their first victory since March 19th against the Nets.  The win bring the Cavs’ record to 18-35, placing them 13th in the East and fourth worst in the NBA.

The silver lining for the Browns and other observations from a strange Cleveland sports weekend

It was an interesting and eventful weekend in Cleveland sports, even if there were just a few games. I had a few thoughts about what happened that I wanted to share…

Browns

The silver lining in the RGIII to the Redskins mess is the timing. The Browns can now move on and prepare knowing that RGIII is out of the picture. We will likely never know for certain how the Redskins were able to outbid the Browns, and what the Browns were willing to give up to get Griffin. What I am convinced of, is that the Redskins would have always been willing to give up more than the Browns. That being the case, I think the Browns were destined to lose this bidding war.

Now I want you to imagine the scenarios they would have had to gameplan for if the Redskins and Rams waited until the day of the draft to make this move. How many discussions and meetings would have been devoted to the subject? How much time and how many resources would have been wasted if Washington had added the 2014 first rounder while the Rams were on the clock, sealing the deal? [Read more...]

Kyrie Irving scored the team’s final 15 points as Cleveland pulled away from Houston in the fourth quarter. Antawn Jamison scored 28, and Scola had 30 for the visitors.

Reed: Jamison’s expiring deal not as highly coveted

The Cavs picked up Antawn Jamison (and his huge salary) for a first round pick and Zydrunas Ilguaskas’s expiring contract. Now Jamison has an expiring contract himself, so it makes sense the Cavs could flip him for another overpaid vet, right?

The Plain Dealer’s Tom Reed doesn’t expect the Cavs to get much for The Jumpshooter:

Hey, Tom: In the next few days it is possible the Cavs will trade Sessions and/or Antawn Jamison if they can get a first-round draft pick for each. If successful, would the Cavs want that first round pick for this year or in 2013 or 2014? – Rich Smith, Columbus

Hey, Rich: I think they are hopeful of getting a first-rounder for Sessions. I don’t see them getting such a return for Jamison.

Jamison is one of my favorite punching bags on this team (the list includes Anthony Parker, Omri Casspi and, of course, Ryan Hollins) but, defensive issues aside, I like what he’s done this year. He was a terrible pickup for LeBron’s home stretch (the Cavs needed a grizzled playoff vet, not a chucker with years on bad teams who gets by on sneakiness. Plus, he totally screwed up Mike Brown’s rotation) but he’s been great, steady influence, on this young team (again, as long as you don’t consider defense). Offensively, Jamison can score in bunches and his hot streaks have kept the Cavs in a lot of games this season (he’s the only other consistent scorer on this team asides from Kyrie).

But I’m not too surprised the market isn’t too strong for Jamey. I don’t see a contending team trading a late first for Jamison (I mean, other teams have tape of the 2010 Boston series too) and unless a non-contending team is really hurting financially, I can’t imagine someone giving up a first for him.

Personally, if the Cavs can move him for anything (second round picks, bag of basketballs), I say do it. I’m firmly in the “stay away from the 8th seed” camp and if they can pick up something for the future for a guy who only helps this year, I’m in.

Simmons: Cavs Linked to Potential Swap for Josh Smith

In his latest piece regarding the trade value of NBA players, ESPN/Grantland’s Bill Simmons discussed a potential trade, likely in Simmons-esque jest, involving the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Atlanta Hawks.

While discussing Atlanta’s should’ve-been All-Star forward  Josh Smith, a player who is on the outs with his current team, Simmons had the following:

Josh Smith trades never seem to work. [...] Who says no to Atlanta saving $20 million next season by dealing Smith and Marvin Williams to Cleveland for Antawn Jamison’s expiring contract? (Answer: The Hawks. But they definitely had a two-hour meeting about it.)

Jamison is the owner of a well-documented $15 million expiring contract, but also one who wishes to stay in Cleveland through the March 15 trade deadline. The Hawks, since signing Joe Johnson to the NBA maximum contract, are looking to part ways with overpriced (or soon-to-be well-paid) athletes.

Marvin Williams has long been rumored to be linked to Cleveland, but the addition of Smith, averaging 17.1 points, 9.8 rebounds and 2.0 blocked shots per game, certainly adds a new element to the mix. The athletic Smith has told the Hawks that he would like to be moved prior to March 15. He is due the remaining portion of his $12.4 million salary for this season as well as the $13.2 million for 2012-13. He would be a free agent heading into the 2013-14 season.

In the same published piece, Anderson Varejao slots in 40th with one of the league’s best trade values, one spot ahead of New York’s Tyson Chandler and several ahead of Indiana’s Roy Hibbert who represented the East in the most recent All-Star contest.

Looking for Leadership in All the Wrong Places

Ralph had the conch. Kevin Garnett swaps out the mollusks opting, instead, for the scowl. At an allegorical level, both items — despite one being inherently more tangible than the other — serve as governing instruments, helping groupthink trump individuality with hopes of ultimate success. Said instruments also occasionally result in tears, be they from the ducts of Piggy or Big Baby Davis.

Box Score: Wizards 101, Cavaliers 98

Head coach Byron Scott mixed up the lineups on Friday night against the lowly Washington Wizards but unfortunately for Cavs fans, the end result was still the same as Cleveland dropped its fifth straight game. Ryan Hollins and Alonzo Gee got the start in place of Omri Casspi and Semih Erden. Amazingly, this was Antawn Jamison’s first game at the Verizon Center since he was traded for Zydrunas Ilgauskas in 2010. Jamison felt right at home, chucking up 24 shot and  leading the Cavaliers with 29 points. The Cavs will now host the Jazz on Monday night, looking to end this five-game skid.

The Cavaliers and Cleveland Fans Very Familiar With NBA’s Trade Deadline

March 15th is the trade deadline in the NBA this year. As Cleveland fans, we are quite used to rumors and speculation throughout the month of February. The Cavaliers have been heavy players at the deadline for a number of years.

In fact, it would seem strange if the Cavaliers weren’t involved in trade discussions. This year the tables have turned a bit and the Cavaliers are sellers instead of buyers. We’ve been through the Anderson Varejao discussions already this season, and his injury coupled with outstanding play this season have pretty much ruled out the Cavs moving the Brazilian big man. The Cavaliers would have to be blown away to let Andy go.

Antawn Jamison is the team’s second-leading scorer behind Kyrie Irving at 17.3 points per game and just over 6.5 rebounds. He also has an expiring contract that would have been like gold previous to the new collective bargaining agreement. Now with the amnesty clause and a few other tweaks, that expiring deal is less attractive. The Cavs would have to really like a young player to take on salary to match the equivalent of Jamison’s $15 million. Contenders aren’t exactly lining up to snatch the 36-year-old volume shooter like they were when the Cavaliers acquired him two years ago. [Read more...]

Antawn Jamison: A Resume, a Rocking Chair and a Championship Dream

It wasn’t supposed to go down like this. On a bitter February afternoon, Washington Wizards President Ernie Grunfeld summoned Antawn Jamison into his office. The meeting would serve to disseminate the team’s decision to trade their veteran leader to a championship contender. It was a move rooted not in desire, but in respect and opportunity. The Wizards, confronted with the unfortunate truth that the end of an era was indeed near, and endeavoring to improve their long-term financial flexibility, felt that they had owed it to Jamison. To provide him with the prospect of making it past the second round of the NBA playoffs, a mountain which the two-time All-Star had not the fortuitous chance to climb, was something that the Washington front office felt it had to do, even if it meant improving the very team that uprooted their own championship dreams over the course of three consecutive seasons. Defending the Sizemore signing- “Maybe the Tribe could have used the Sizemore savings in other areas, such as increasing their offer to first baseman Carlos Pena. They reportedly offered Pena $8 million to come to Cleveland, and he opted instead to sign with the Rays for $7.25 million. Maybe if they threw a couple more million on the pile, they could have reeled him in. But then you have to ask yourself if Carlos Pena is worth eight figures. The long-winded point here is that there are any number of opportunities the Indians could have explored beyond Sizemore, but none of them strike me as particularly appealing. And none of them featured the kind of upside the Grady deal presented (and perhaps, depending on the severity of this back situation, still presents).

No, if you want to criticize the Indians at this point, criticize the system, not the signing. This club simply did not infuse enough quality outfield talent into its system through the Draft and trades to come to the forefront in times like these.” [Castrovince/CastroTurf] [Read more...]
