Former Brown Jerome Harrison’s story- “Long story short, I was there with him at the doctor’s appointment,” Michelle said. “He didn’t even tell me what the issue was. We pull up and it’s a cancer institute. ‘What’s happening here, J.C.? What are you not telling me?’ They didn’t know if it was benign or malignant. They didn’t know anything. He didn’t give me all this. He just told me it was this small mass, this thing that had to be pulled out.

“Finally he meets with the doctor and I ask him to tell me what’s going on. That’s when they told me how serious it was.”

Jerome was facing a life or death situation. He needed surgery immediately to make sure the tumor was not cancerous. If doctors had not discovered the growth on his brain, he could have died on the football field with one strong hit.” [Richardson/MLive] [Read more...]

While We’re Waiting… What’s Holding the Browns Back?

“With the hopes of a competitive team, potentially one approaching the .500 mark, the Browns have yet again pulled the rug out from under a fan-base believing progress would be something viewed in the 2012 season. The early issue is, the Browns are a more talented team than a season ago. Added were potential dynamics with the names of Richardson, Weeden and Gordon, the remaining problem is there are issues within the roster and/or coaching staff which leaves much to be desired on game-day.

The youth of the team is an easy scape-goat for what ails the Cleveland Browns. But, when I look at the performance of the team, I see something other than the youth being the issue holding back the team.” [Lane Adkins/The OBR]

The Southern Knight: “Tell me again why Jimmy Haslam III should tread slowly in the name of continuity and stability? Really now. Why? To protect and serve up one of the stalest Sunday products in the league? Cleveland doesn’t just need a new sheriff in town. Cleveland needs Haslam to be Batman. Browns’ football is a crime right now.” [Bud Shaw/Plain Dealer]

For those already getting their rankings put together: “Purposely dodge Trent Richardson in drafts this year and you will sorely regret it. The ‘Bama product was selected No. 3 overall by Cleveland last April, the earliest a rusher fell off the board since New Orleans snapped tendons to acquire Reggie Bush at No. 2 in 2006. Long gone are the days of Ki-Jana Carter. In an era where RBs are completely dispensable, most would agree it’s silly to shell out stacks of cash for their services. Just ask GMs in Jacksonville and Chicago. Richardson, though, will be the exception. Take the plunge in the late-first, and you could be hoisting a virtual trophy come year’s end.” [Roto Arcade] [Read more...]

While We’re Waiting… MLB Trade Deadline Deals, Gee’s Value, and Masterson’s Regression

Let me remind you that the biggest difference maker down the stretch for the playoffs last year was Doug Fister, a trade that barely made a ripple among deadline deals (in terms of attention), but made a huge impact in the AL Central race as he posted a 1.79 ERA and a 0.83 WHIP for the Tigers after he went from Seattle to Detroit.  Most thought that Fister would slot in behind Verlander, Scherzer, and Porcello last year and that his real value was in the control that the Tigers would have over him (which is still true), but Fister was masterful once he got to Motown and his arrival played a HUGE part in the Tigers running away with the AL Central last year.  So while big names may be out there and are certain to make an impact, the Indians should perhaps (after searching out that bat) try to find that Doug Fister-type player, whose acquisition may fly under-the-radar for some, but may be just what the Indians need in terms of strengthening and lengthening their rotation.” [Paul Cousineau[Read more...]

While We’re Waiting… Cleveland Fans, the Morning After

“We can’t keep clinging to the past. We are drunk on our sorrows, telling and retelling stories in a masochistic whirlpool of despair. People tell each other where they were when LeBron made his decision, when Elway stepped under center, when Jorden lifted a jump shot in Richfield. We measure fanhood not by money spent but by tears shed. The “real” fans are those who have apparently suffered the most. It doesn’t have to be this way.

In many ways we are blessed. Yeah I said it. In 1965 the Indians almost relocated to Seattle. The Cavs endured one of the most inept owners of all time in Ted Steipen but made it through. We lost the Browns for three years but they came back. Teams don’t come back, just ask Seattle about the Sonics or Los Angeles about the Rams. We have been lucky in so many ways and I am grateful. I’m not ignorant of our struggles or our suffering, but that should not define us. We are so much more than a forty man roster or a starting five.” [Corey Barnes] [Read more...]

While We’re Waiting… Damon Being Damon, Harden’s Struggles, and Sandusky, Ohio vs Sandusky, Jerry

“On a mid-May segment of the MLB Network chat showIntentional Talk, hosts Chris Rose and Kevin Millar attempted to stump outfielder Johnny Damon on past teammates. The duo asked the current Cleveland Indian and 18-year vet where, if at all, he had crossed paths with five other players. He batted 1.000, remembering not only the big-league clubs but also where they’d played together in the minors. “I pay attention to my teammates,” he said, laughing that big Johnny Damon laugh. “The tough thing would have been to ask me about my teammates I’m with now. This is the first time I’m actually with them.” Throughout the interview, he frequently glanced offscreen to smile and wave at Chicago White Sox players walking to batting practice. He knew every one of them as well. During the exchange, Damon and Millar only addressed each other as “pimp.” It was broish and stupid, but the subtext was clear: nothing had changed from when the pair were in the clubhouse together. For Damon, once someone’s a teammate, he’s always a teammate.” [Noah Davis/The Classical]

Everyone is talking about the Tribe attendance- “But really, when it comes to the Tribe and attendance, not much surprises me. The Indians, even with the 30-15 start last year, finished with the seventh-lowest attendance mark in the Majors, were dead last in 2010, were fifth-lowest in 2009 and were 22nd out of 30 a year after reaching the ALCS.

This is what’s called a trend, and it’s part of the package here in a town that’s endured declining population and economic downturn and really doesn’t have baseball on the brain. It should surprise absolutely nobody that the city that ranked first nationally in TV ratings for the NFL Draft is the same city that ranks 30 out of 30 in MLB attendance, because this is a Browns town, through and through, and the once-in-a-lifetime Indians sellout streak of the 1990s was the product of a combination of unique factors (no Browns, strong economy, new ballpark, great team, downtown renaissance, etc.) that will never combine again.” [Castrovince/MLB.com] [Read more...]

So Pythagoras isn’t in Cleveland’s corner? “For the second straight year, the Indians are the surprise first-place team in the AL Central in the early going. How have they done it this year? First, it helps to have an easy schedule. In their nine series of the year so far, only two have been against teams with winning records: Toronto and the recently completed weekend series with Texas. Their average opponent record is about .450. Despite that slow start, the Indians still shouldn’t have as good a record as they have. They won their first half-dozen one-run games. That can’t last, and it hasn’t. Thus, they began the year 14-11 despite being outscored, 113-114.” [Chris Jaffe/Hardball Times] [Read more...]

Making the case for LaMichael James- “Every time I watch LaMichael James, I keep seeing one guy over and over. It’s Brian Westbrook. A guy who can run between the tackles well enough, but can catch the ball, and is a complete mis-match in the open field. In Westbrook’s best season, he stacked up 90 catches that season. I know Shurmur had some success with Steven Jackson, a guy who I actually think compares quite well with Trent Richardson, but I think the Eagles were at their best with Westbrook, and the last two seasons with LeSean McCoy. But after the usage of Peyton Hillis last season, and the success we had with Chris Ogbonnaya, I think this coaching staff is more comfortable with a smaller, more versatile Running Back, like a McCoy or Westbrook.” [Dawgs by Nature] [Read more...]

Now this is just getting ridiculous- “With three teams possibly clamoring for Tannehill, the team that holds the third pick in the draft may finally have a trade market. Whether it’s a flip-flop with the Browns or a five-spot discount with the Dolphins or a nine-position plummet with the Seahawks, three different teams could make a run at the clear shot at Tannehill. At a bare minimum, the Vikings should squeeze the Browns into a one-spot swap, like the Vikings did with the Dolphins back in 2004, when Vikings G.M. Rick Spielman was coincidentally the G.M. in Miami. Then, the Vikings could still pick tackle Matt Kalil and finagle an extra pick (maybe a third-rounder) from the Browns.” [Florio/Pro Football Talk] [Read more...]

While We’re Waiting… Chisenhall vs Hannahan, All-Star snubs and local champion

Breaking down Chisenhall vs Hannahan- “It’s hard to say who is the favorite for the everyday job at third this season. Like I said earlier, I think Hannahan is on the roster (barring injury) one way or the other. If Hannahan gets the nod as the starter, I think it’s unlikely that Chisenhall will make the team as a bench player. Chisenhall is still viewed as the third baseman of the future for the Indians, so he needs to be playing every day — whether that’s in the Majors or Minors. If he is thrown into the fire with the Tribe, put Hannahan on the bench as a utility man. If Hannahan gets the job, send Chisenhall to Triple-A Columbus to continue his development.” [Bastian/MLB.com] [Read more...]

Five prospects with the most to prove this year- “Unfortunately for Phelps and Tribe fans, his brief, 35 game major league stint was a disaster. Phelps had terrible offensive stats (.155/.241/.254 slash line, .494 OPS (39 OPS+), .231 wOBA (39 wRC+), -0.9 fWAR in 80 PA) and struggled defensively (five errors in only 75 chances). Phelps ended up back in AAA while Kipnis solidified his hold on the second base job later in the season.

While Phelps won’t be able to prove himself at the major league level this year, he will need to impress as the everyday second baseman in Columbus in order to rebuild his stock. If he keeps producing at a high level in AAA, he’ll get another shot in the majors. With the lack of middle-infield talent the Indians have in the higher levels of the minors, one injury will give Phelps his chance to prove himself again. He’ll need to work hard this year to be prepared for that moment, whenever it comes.” [Paiscik/Indians Prospect Insider] [Read more...]

This-> “There is reason for excitement in Cleveland. It’s been eleven games, sure, but Kyrie Irving is coming into his own right before our eyes. Every night he plays with more and more confidence. He’s scored 20+ points in his last 4 games. It’s likely that he’ll hit some rough patches but as it stands now, he has the 5th highest rookie PER of all time. Ahead of him? Oscar Robertson, Michael Jordan, Walter Davis, and Chris Paul. (h/t to @docrostov for that stat) Try to fathom this: he’s the best player for an NBA team at nineteen years old. Very good piece on the future of football and concussions. Highly recommend reading the whole piece- “In recent years, it’s become clear that the severity of a concussion is only indirectly related to the physical force of the impact. Sometimes, players walk away from savage hits. And sometimes they are felled by incidental contact. While data compiled from the Head Impact Telemetry System, or HITS, captures the extreme physical forces at work during a football game — it’s not uncommon for a player to sustain hits equivalent to the impact of a 25 mph car crash — there is no clear threshold for injury. The mind remains a black box; nobody really understands why it breaks.

But we do know what happens once it’s broken. In the milliseconds after a concussion, there is a sudden release of neurotransmitters as billions of brain cells turn themselves on at the exact same time. This frenzy of activity leads to a surge of electricity, an unleashing of the charged ions contained within neurons. It’s as if the brain is pouring out its power.” [Lehrer/Grantland] [Read more...]

More on Delonte West, this time some insight into his condition- “That’s why this most recent episode is so hard to swallow. The messages about West sleeping in the car or in the gym seem to indicate a relapse in his fight with depression. It’s frustrating and hurtful to see because his situation, while unfortunate, is treatable. The obvious rejoinder to West, a multi-million dollar athlete, is “why doesn’t he get a hotel room” or “why doesn’t he rent a house?” Those questions, while relevant, are too easy, and don’t come close to the source of the problem. The correct question is: “why hasn’t he asked for help?”Help. It’s a simple, small word. It’s not hard to say, but to anyone with bipolar, it is damned near impossible to ask for.” [White/HoopSpeak] ALSO CHECK OUT: A Teachable Moment [IGoHardNow] [Read more...]

While We’re Waiting: Cutler doesn’t <3 Mangini, LeBron photos, and OSU’s new look offense

Jay Cutler apparently isn’t a fan of Eric Mangini.  Eric Mangini apparently isn’t a fan of anything exciting.  ”The paper, citing a source, said that Cutler’s agent, Bus Cook, made it clear when talks began that Cutler refused to play for Mangini and that he feared Cutler wouldn’t report to the Browns. Cutler was ultimately traded to Chicago for quarterback Kyle Orton, Chicago’s first-rounder this year and next year, and a 2009 third-round pick. Chicago got Denver’s fifth-round pick this year.”  [Mary Kay Cabot, Cleveland.com]

So…around here the big stories have been, hmmmm. Let me think back for a minute…oh yeah, the Cavs pulled off a little trade. Rock and Scott both offered their opinions/analysis. Scott got us thinking about the Browns and what moves they might make in free agency. One of those moves will have to be a decision on QB Derek Anderson, which Rock wrote about. The Browns did lock up Jamal Lewis this week, and that same link has an interesting article about Cavs’ coach Mike Brown.

Who knows what fate awaits Kelvin Sampson, but Rock wants him to stay away from Ohio State’s recruits.
