Mo Williams LakersSometime Thursday morning or early afternoon, the All-Star reserves will be getting a phone call or e-mail letting them know they’re invited to Dallas next month.
Mo Williams is hopeful, but after what happened last year, he’s not going to wait by his BlackBerry. His numbers are roughly the same as a year ago, his scoring slightly down but his assists slightly up as he facilitates more when Shaquille O’Neal on the team.

But after last season, when the Cavs also had the best record in the league at this point and he was passed over, Williams can’t help but expect a snub.

“To be honest, I’m expecting not to make it,” Williams said. “I’ve learned to expect the worst. I’ve been in this situation before. My hopes are not high, I’ll tell you that.”  [Brian Windhorst]

stephon-marbury-interview

Maybe this Marbury guy isn’t so bad after all: “Stephon Marbury, who becomes a free agent again today, believes star players should be cautious about signing with the Knicks because of Mike D’Antoni’s offensive scheme and the way the organization treats people.  I wouldn’t want to play in that system,” Marbury told The Post. “That system can’t win championships. You can’t win championships if you don’t talk about defense.” [Marc Berman/NY Post]

Eric Wedge: Persona Non Grata

wedgeDo we here at Waiting For Next Year tend to focus much nihilism towards our professional play-calling directors?  Perhaps.  And often times, it may be laced with a dab of frustration that can lead to unwarrented blame.  It is a secret to no one that the Cavaliers’ Mike Brown was a frequent target of much angst and solicitude thanks to an almost-stubborn lack of offensive execution.  Frequently leaving a fan base in such a state of disbelief will oftentimes result in comparable response.

Alas, I engross this piece regarding a man in a similar position, haplessly for a similar reason: a severe lack of offense.  But unlike Brown, who sticks to his virtues and says that his team focuses on – and wins basketball games thanks to - the defensive side of the ball, Eric Wedge seems uncomfortably complacent with said scarce run production.
