Red Sox 6 Indians 3: Stumbling Offense, Bumbling Defense Lead To Sox Sweep

Ryan RaburnIt doesn’t get much worse than yesterday in the wacked out world that is Cleveland Sports. Late morning brought us the news that the Cavaliers had relieved Byron Scott of his duties leaving Terry Francona, on the job all of 13 games and all of six and a half months as the longest tenured manager/coach of our three major sports franchises. Then we all learned that the man who was as popular as The Beatles in this town, Browns owner Jimmy Haslam, had his company and “first love” Pilot/Flying J under FBI investigation for the past two years on charges of alleged rebate fraud. According to a 120-page affidavit, Haslam had direct knowledge of the wrongdoings. Meanwhile, the Indians were trying to avoid a sweep at the hands of the Boston Red Sox, who have done just about everything right in the first two games of the series.

Well this is Cleveland, and sometimes when it rains, it doesn’t just pour, it monsoons on us.

This is supposed to be a time of excitement and hope. The NFL Draft is a week away. The NBA Playoffs are starting this weekend. The baseball season is just getting off the ground. The Indians are fresh with new players and a manager that is about as respected as they come. But yesterday the sports world was the dog, and our three teams were the tree.  [Read more...]

Red Sox 6. Indians 3: Sox Plan Baffles Masterson

Asdrubal CabreraThere was rain in the forecast the last two nights in Cleveland. It is too bad it never arrived.

I sound like a broken record and we are only two weeks plus into the season, but the Tribe’s starting pitching is obviously a big concern. The thought was that with their best on the mound, Justin Masterson, the bleeding could be stopped. Actually the Indians starters pitched well in the Chicago series over the weekend, but what’s most fresh in our minds was Tuesday night’s comedy show starring Ubaldo Jimenez. The over-taxed Indians bullpen figured to get some relief with the Tribe’s ace on the mound. Just in case, Corey Kluber was called up as a long man, taking the place of CF Michael Bourn who was placed on the 15-day DL earlier in the day.

Masterson entered the game with a 19-inning scoreless streak in tow. The Red Sox came to the plate in the first inning with the perfect approach. They were patient with Masterson and took almost everything the other way right from the jump.  Four of the first five Red Sox singled the other way. The one who didn’t, Shane Victorino, was hit by a pitch. It was 3-0 before you could open your bag of peanuts. Justin managed to get through the rest of the inning unscathed, but the Red Sox knew they were on to something. [Read more...]

The Diff: Baseball attendance in April, sellout streaks

Last week’s version of The Diff was tremendous fun as we journeyed through the land of quality starts in baseball. With the Indians’ back-and-forth 5-7 start to the season, that post likely remains incredibly relevant. Now, we stick with the same sport but head to something more external: April attendance.

The Diff

Attendance is always a topical theme in the world of baseball at the beginning of the season. Once the facade of a boisterous Opening Day sellout is lifted, columnists and fans peel back the harsh reality of battling the frigid cold for half-decent attendance figures at the ballpark. Heck, in a sense, that’s exactly why I dedicated The Diff back on Feb. 27 to the topic of Indians attendance (and market saturation). I saw this complaint coming early in 2013. But yet, there’s still a need for much more context in this debate. And that’s why I’m back for more attendance talk today. [Read more...]

Booooo-baldo – It is time to cut the cord

Ubaldo JimenezThe Indians series with the Boston Red Sox certainly didn’t lack for storylines. First and foremost, you had the Boston Marathon bombings, which took place just after the Red Sox Patriots day game with the Tampa Bay Rays. The Sox came to Cleveland with heavy hearts to face their old manager Terry Francona. Tito did put it out there right away – this series isn’t about him. But he has to want this one just a little bit more than the others. Then there is Ubaldo….

All spring long, the Indians brass would tell you how well Ubaldo Jimenez was throwing. Few believed it. Then in his first start of the season Jimenez bobbed and weaved his way through six innings for a win. He got the ball from Francona on Opening Day in Cleveland and reverted back into the Ubaldo we all know and…well I won’t say love. He couldn’t make it out of the fifth inning, giving up seven earned runs in front of 40,000 plus at Progressive Field. With the back to back rainouts last week, the Indians smartly moved Ubaldo back in the rotation, giving him a couple of extra days to work out the kinks with pitching coach Mickey Callaway. Again, we were told by the Indians that Jimenez had a “great side session” and would be ready for his next start. [Read more...]

MLB News: Victorino signs with Boston Red Sox over Indians

The Indians were one of at least two teams bidding for the services of outfielder Shane Victorino. The Red Sox have inked the 32 year old to a three-year, $39 million dollar contract.

“The Boston Red Sox reached a three-year, $39 million agreement with free-agent outfielder Shane Victorino on Tuesday, according to a source with direct knowledge of the negotiations.

The deal is pending a physical.

The terms of the agreement are exactly the same as the deal Boston reached with free-agent first baseman/catcher Mike Napoli on Monday.”

According to the Plain Dealer’s Paul Hoynes, the Indians offered Victorino a four year deal worth $44 million.

Box Score: Indians 1, Red Sox 14

Well then, that got out of control quickly. Corey Kluber struggled in his third start for Cleveland and Josh Tomlin was no help in relief. At least the Indians managed to split the series with the Red Sox, who also have struggled in the second half.

Notable: Carlos Santana got switched from first base to left field late in the game. Notable: He didn’t look that awful. And no, there was no injury related to the strange move, as Manny Acta just said he wanted to give Shin-Soo Choo a little breather and a full day of rest for Michael Brantley.

Brent Lillibridge. Zach McAllister. Ezequiel Carrera. Those are your three stars of the night.

Lillibridge finished 3-for-4 with his first home run in nearly 12 months while McAllister went eight strong innings as the Indians (53-61) won their second in three days against Boston (56-59) at Progressive Field. Carrera entered the game late as a defensive replacement, but also had an RBI single and an impressive final catch to end the game.

After the game, STO’s Katie Witham asked Lillibridge about the home run, and he said, “hopefully it’s a good sign for the next couple months.” He talked about finishing the season strong and how he’s just trying to help out the team. Witham also asked about Lou Marson’s RBI squeeze bunt that scored Lillibridge in the seventh.

And yes, Jon tweeted this during the game. That’s how we know the world has finally gone mad.

The Indians and Sox are back at it at 1:05 p.m. tomorrow. Corey Kluber (0-0, 6.10 ERA) could be making his final start in Cleveland before heading back to Columbus as he faces off against Boston lefty Jon Lester (5-10, 5.36 ERA).

Tribe Wins Second Straight Behind Ubaldo

With so much harsh Tribe baseball for our viewing displeasure recently, last night was a refreshingly positive game. The Indians got good pitching and hit enough to take the series opener against the Red Sox 5-3. Ubaldo Jimenez stacked up the strikeouts against the BoSox to collect his ninth win of the season, Chris Perez got back on the right track, and the offense put a crooked number up on the board as the Indians won their second straight after dropping the previous eleven.

There was enough negative news prior to the game with Travis Hafner heading back to the DL and pitching coach Scott Radinsky being relieved of his duties. Jason Donald was called up to take Hafner’s spot on the 25-man, and he made his impact felt immediately. With Jason Kipnis being a late scratch from the lineup due to a stiff neck, it was Donald who started at second and batted first. Donald took a Felix Doubront fastball and sliced it just inside the right field foul pole to give the Indians an early 1-0 lead. [Read more...]

Kevin Youkilis Traded To White Sox

Well, that didn’t take long. One day after another public spat with manager Bobby Valentine, albeit fairly benign, the Boston Red Sox have traded Kevin Youkilis to the Chicago White Sox. Youkilis has been hampered by injury the past two seasons and his numbers had declined significantly. There was little room for him in the Red Sox plans with the emergence Will Middlebrooks at third, David Ortiz entrenched in the DH spot, and Adrian Gonzalez locked in at first base.

The Indians were once thought to be potential suitors for Youkilis if he were to go on the market, but those rumors faded and this weekend Ken Rosenthal was told that the Tribe was a “longshot” to land him. It was a rough weekend for the Tribe bats, scoring just two runs against two Houston left-handed starters. Youkilis was a potential target to fill the need for a right-handed bat, but certainly not an ideal option.

The White Sox seemed to have the inside track and they completed the deal before the weekend was out, sending right-hander Zach Stewart and utility man Brent Lillibridge to Boston.

Box Score: Red Sox 12, Indians 1

Hopefully you got your mother something nice for this Mother’s Day, because the Indians sure came empty handed. Justin Masterson got blistered with two outs in the first inning, and Dan Wheeler poured gasoline on the fire in the middle innings as the Red Sox left the Tribe feeling the need to go anywhere but Fenway after today’s 12-1 demolition, taking the last three in the series after the Tribe grabbed the opener. Daniel Bard went six innings and allowed just one run on a bases loaded walk to Asdrubal Cabrera in the third. Justin Masterson went six innings, but allowed six runs and seven hits, including four runs in the first, all of which came after there were two outs in the inning. The Tribe is now 18-16 but remain in first place thanks to the recent stumbles of Detroit and Chicago. They head to Minnesota for a two-game series starting tomorrow night.

Tribe Bats Go Silent in Fenway

The Cleveland Indians have not been shut out yet this season, but last night was about as lifeless as we’ve seen the offense, as they collected just three hits and one run against a rookie lefthander and a shaky bullpen. The Red Sox took game three of the series 4-1, and the Tribe now needs to win this afternoon to salvage a split of the series.

Felix Doubront, a rookie left-hander, shut down the Tribe for six innings, allowing just five baserunners while striking out five. Doubront had a fastball in the 95 mph range that he painted on the outside corner on a couple of occasions early, and the Tribe hitters were upset at the width of the strike zone from home plate umpire Alan Porter. The one hit that Doubront gave up in the first five innings was a single by Hafner where he was thrown out at second trying to stretch it into a double.

But, overall, the Tribe stayed in the game thanks to Zach McAllister, who made a surprise start replacing the injured Josh Tomlin. Zach got hit by back-to-back RBI doubles from the heart of the Red Sox order in Pedroia and Ortiz in the third inning, allowed a sac fly in the fourth, and surrendered a sixth inning homer to Cody Ross. Other than that, however, he pitched effectively and kept the Indians in the game. [Read more...]

Box Score: Red Sox 4, Indians 1

The Indians fell victim to a rookie left-handed pitcher in Felix Doubront that kept them guessing most of the night. Felix lasted six innings, allowing the lone run on three hits, walking two and striking out five as the Red Sox took the third game of the series 4-1. Zach McAllister, who was called upon to start on short notice for the injured Josh Tomlin, pitched well enough to keep his team in the game, striking out eight and walking none in seven innings while allowing four runs. The Sox added a pair in the third on RBI doubles from Dustin Pedroia and David Ortiz, and Cody Ross added a sixth inning homer. Jason Kipnis accounted for the only Tribe run with a RBI single in the sixth. The Indians look for a split in the four-game series tomorrow afternoon at 1:35 PM as Justin Masterson takes on Daniel Bard.

Ubaldo Jimenez and Anger Management

Ubaldo Jimenez, I argue, is the most frustrating starting pitcher in Major League Baseball to have on your team. Notice I didn’t say he’s the worst starter or the most ineffective. Jimenez has a lot of pitches with good movement and at one time, he was undoubtedly an ace. That, however, is not the case anymore. Instead, he’s effectively the Indians’ fifth starter, and he’s failing to keep his team in the game and taxing the bullpen. That was exactly the case in last night’s 7-5 defeat as the Red Sox repeatedly put him up against the ropes in tiny Fenway and eventually sent him to the canvas.

There are certain things that you just can’t do if you want to be an effective starter at the major league level. You can’t fall behind in the count, walk more people than you strike out, give up crooked numbers in more than one inning, and run up your pitch count to 100 before the fifth inning. Ubaldo does all of these things, repeatedly. He did them all last night too (except the pitches – 99 in less than five innings). Falling behind in counts and his walks make the hits he does relinquish lethal. Whereas guys like Derek Lowe can gut themselves through a performance where they aren’t sharp, Jimenez is utterly unable to do such a thing. Minimizing damage is not in his vocabulary.

Ubaldo started off with a strikeout of Sweeney where he stayed ahead in the count, and then he was ahead 0-2 on Pedroia. From there, it was a single to Pedroia, an Ortiz walk, a Gonzalez hit by pitch, and a two-run double to Middlebrooks, followed by a Ross walk. In between that, he did manage to strike out the side with Sweeney, Nava, and Saltalamacchia. It was two runs given up and 30 pitches thrown. If that’s the one bad inning and he settles on from there, that’s fine and the Indians stay in the game. But, there were additional big Red Sox innings to come. [Read more...]

Box Score: Red Sox 7, Indians 5

Tribe starter Ublado Jimenez was unable to dial up a repeat performance from his last outing, instead falling into his predominant underachieving 2012 form. Ubaldo yielded 7 runs and 9 hits while walking 5 and striking out 4 as the Tribe dropped the second game of the four-game series with Boston 7-5 in Fenway. The Indians stranded 14 runners in all, including 7 in the final three innings as Carlos Santana and Michael Brantley contributed two RBI each. Despite having the tying run on second base in the ninth inning, the Indians were unable to make Boston closer Alfredo Aceves pay. Cleveland falls to 18-14 and currently sits 1.5 games ahead of Detroit in the AL Central pending the outcome of tonight’s Tigers-A’s game. Cleveland and Boston meet again for game three tomorrow night with Josh Tomlin facing Felix Doubront.

The Red Sox, The Tribe, And The $200 Million Question

I was reading an excellent piece by Jeff Passan about the Boston Red Sox and the controversy surrounding Josh Beckett this morning. Beckett, who has a $17 million figure attached to his name is knee deep in it again. And no, I’m not referring to money. A year after the Red Sox imploded and got their manager fired amidst clubhouse dalliances with beer and fried chicken, the face of the dysfunction isn’t much better. Beckett got shelled by our beloved Tribe last night, but I missed it. I was putting my son to bed and it was a pleasant surprise when I finally got to turn the TV on to see that the Indians were pounding the Red Sox 7-1. Beckett most recently missed a start and then played golf on his off day, which he was forced to address after lasting fewer than three innings. This morning after reading about the dysfunctional backdrop that the Indians exploited last night it left me thankful.

The Indians aren’t without their own problems. The Indians have been suffering through the contractual dollars committed to players like Travis Hafner and Grady Sizemore for years as the duo has struggled to stay on the field. The Indians had an entire off-season with the mission to get a right-handed bat. They re-signed Grady Sizemore and added Casey Kotchman who are both lefties. In addition they picked up the option on Roberto Hernandez and found out that he wasn’t allowed to work here under the fake name Fausto Carmona. Even those problems in a constrained situation like the Cleveland Indians business environs seems mild by comparison to what is happening in Boston. [Read more...]

Thank You, Atlanta: Derek Lowe Serves as Veteran Anchor on a Young Staff

Derek Lowe returned to familiar grounds with familiar fan fare. As Bostonians welcomed Lowe back with open arms and signs thanking him for his time spent with their team, the veteran right-hander approached the historic Fenway Park as a former inhabitant whose keys still made the locks turn.

The headlines will belong to Washington’s Steven Strasburg who fanned 13 Pittsburgh Pirate batters in just six innings of work. The tabloids and Twitterverse will focus on Boston’s Josh Beckett who the Red Sox traded for after Lowe moved on to more western pastures; after all, it’s Becket who is making $17 million this season and continues to grow larger by the day, the antagonist in the 2011 fried-chicken-and-beer scandal which tipped Red Sox Nation off its axis like a wayward flip-cup. But it was Lowe, on this night, who seemingly flew under the radar to mow through the perennially vaunted Red Sox lineup to record his fifth win of the season, each of which has followed an Indians loss.

The first-place Indians, recent losers of two straight contests to the White Sox, will head into their second game of their series against the Redder version, having lost no more than two-straight games thus far in the 2012 season. Last season, the role of the stopper belonged to Justin Masterson. With Bat taking the role of the ace, the 38-year-old Lowe has stepped right in without skipping a beat. [Read more...]

Indians 8, Red Sox 3: Hannahan, Brantley Batter Beckett as Tribe Fans Grin

Let me just get this right out of the way off the top; I do not like Josh Beckett. Never have. Never will.

Not only did he used to own the Indians, particularly during the 2007 ALCS where he wont both of his starts, but he also won a World Series title with the Florida Marlins in 2003 where he was the MVP. The Marlins having two rings in a seven-year span makes me ill on so many levels. The attitude he exudes, the slow pace in which he works, the way he disdains the media – all of it makes the guy extremely unlikeable in my opinion.

But I digress.

Beckett took the hill last night for the last place Boston Red Sox with a fresh new controversy on his hands (the off-day Golf incident). The Fenway Faithful have already seemed to be a little standoffish towards him since last season’s “Chicken and Beer” collapse in September. He entered this one with a 2-4 record and in dire need of a good performance to build back up some good will in his own city and clubhouse. [Read more...]

Box Score: Indians 8, Red Sox 3

The Indians jumped all over Josh Beckett, chasing him in the third inning after plating seven. Derek Lowe earned his fifth win, which must be killing the faithful in Bawston. Kipnis hit his sixth home run, and Jack Hannahan hit one of his own. Pestano made things interesting by loading the bases, but got out of the eighth without surrendering a run.

Indians’ Derek Lowe Surprises with Hot April Start

Entering today’s game against the Los Angeles Angels, the Cleveland Indians remain in first place in the AL Central with a 10-9 record. That’s quite an odd feat alone, but then one must discern which individual has been the most impressive thus far for the Tribe. After looking around a little bit, I’ve got a top four candidate, and it’s someone no one expected to be in this position.

Derek Lowe, a 38-year-old starter, made his way to Cleveland in a small late October 2011 trade with the Atlanta Braves. After notably collapsing down the stretch last year while the Braves faltered to miss the playoffs, Lowe was pretty much given away to Cleveland. Atlanta ate up $10 million of his $15 million salary, and hardly got anything in return (just Single-A LHP Chris Jones). [Read more...]

Report: Derek Lowe’s World Series ring and trophy stolen

Cleveland Indians pitcher Derek Lowe was a member of the 2004 Boston Red Sox team that won a World Series. Asking him to show you the ring might be a touchy subject today-

“The Lee County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the theft of a 2004 Boston Red Sox World Series ring and a gold World Series trophy from Major League Baseball pitcher Derek Lowe’s Fort Myers residence. A housekeeper told investigators on Friday someone had broken into the residence on Terabella Way and stole the ring, trophy, necklaces, and women’s shoes and purses. The total value of the items taken was about $90,000.”
