Box Score: Wizards 84 Cavaliers 94

It was less than a year ago when Kyrie Irving made his forgettable Cavalier debut. Tonight, we saw what a difference experience and confidence made for Kyrie as the Cavaliers survived a Wizards 4th quarter run to come away with a big opening night win.

Dion Waiters had a stellar debut, making Cavs fans forget about most of their preseason worries. Waiters finished with 17 points. Kyrie played like the blossoming young superstar that he is, leading all scorers with 29 points. But the story of this game was Anderson Varejao, playing his first Cavaliers game since his season ending injury. Andy more than made up for lost time finishing with 9 points, 23 rebounds (12 of them offensive), 9 assists, and 2 blocks.

Sure, this is a depleted Wizards team and without John Wall and Nene to counter Kyrie and Andy, a Cavalier win was to be expected. But never the less, the Cavaliers took care of their business, and they showcased a style of basketball that was just fun to watch (early parts of the 4th quarter not withstanding). The Cavaliers will host the Bulls on Friday before embarking on their first extended road trip of the season.

Box Score: Indians 6, Mariners 5

Reserve infielder Jose Lopez went from zero to hero in one afternoon, committing an error which would ultimately lead to a Seattle Mariners run in the fifth inning, only to hit a game-tying three-run home run in the eighth inning as well as scoring another game-tying run in the bottom of the 11th.  A Carlos Santana single would seal the deal as the Tribe came from behind twice in the same game.

Jimenez had a rough start, but so did the Tribe’s defense tallying 2 errors and a few other mistakes. Shelley Duncan ended the homer-less streak for the Indians. So we have that going for us. Which is nice.

Box Score: Cavaliers 101, Grizzlies 109

Tough loss tonight in Memphis, but the Cavaliers shouldn’t hang their heads. Playing one of the better teams in the West, the Cavaliers hung in there for pretty much the whole game, even holding the lead for much of the first half.

Kyrie Irving was simply terrific tonight for the wine and gold, scoring 25 points in 29 minutes of play. It was certainly curious to see Irving sitting for much of the 4th quarter despite being the hot hand in this game. Was Byron Scott tanking? I’m sure he’ll just say they’re limiting Kyrie’s minutes as he works his way back into game shape, but the Cavaliers might have won this game had he played more in the 4th quarter.

None of which is to say the Cavaliers did the wrong thing. They showed a lot of spirit in this game and had a chance to win, but in the end they maintained their position in the bottom of the standings. Sort of a best case scenario for the tanking mentality.

Kudos to both Donald Sloan and Manny Harris who both stepped up and did some of the things I was hoping to see from them in this game. Manny provided some offense off the bench, and Sloan looked steady in the backup PG role. The more I see from Sloan, the more I feel comfortable with the idea of bringing him back next season to try handling the backup PG role from day one.

From a defensive standpoint, 6 Grizzlies were in double digit points including all 5 starters. The Grizzlies did a nice job moving the ball around and getting scoring from every spot, but the Cavaliers defended pretty poorly in this game and allowed the Grizzlies to control the rebounds a little too easily.

It’s never fun to lose, but as far as losing goes, this is the kind of loss you can live with in a learning season such as this.

Box Score: Indians 1, Mariners 4

The Indians didn’t have many highlights in this one. A Carlos Santana throw from his knees to cut down a runner and a rare 8-3 double play were about it. Cunningham missed a home run by an inch or two. Shelley Duncan left the bases loaded in the sixth with just one out. That about sums it up. Derek Lowe battled, but did not have good stuff.

Box Score: 76ers 103, Cavaliers 87

That’s more like it. It may seem funny feeling ok about a 16 point loss, but in this game the Cavaliers came out and showed some fight, taking just a 4 point deficit into the locker room at the half. Jrue Holliday went off in the 3rd and the Sixers’ talent overtook the Cavaliers, but the Cavaliers at least played hard in this game and showed some pride and spirit in the way they played.

It was nice seeing Kyrie Irving back in uniform and starting for the Cavaliers, even if he was limited in minutes. He played a somewhat quiet but strong and efficient game. Tristan Thompson played nicely early in this game, Lester Hudson found his scoring groove again, and Samardo Samuels continues to play pretty well late into this season.

You hate to talk about “ifs”, but “if” the 76ers hadn’t gone on a 24-2 run in the 3rd quarter, this game might have been a lot different. I was hard on the Cavaliers today, and I still think they deserved it, but I’m happy with the way Byron Scott got the guys to play in this game and there were plenty of positives to take away from this game.

All while adding to the lottery odds. Not a bad evening for the Cavaliers.

If you can’t something nice, don’t say anything at all.

I should adhere to that advice right now. I haven’t been this frustrated with a Cavaliers game since Game 5 of that infamous Celtics series. But a shout out to Antawn Jamison for the 0-10 night from the field. Pretty impressive.

Cavaliers play again tomorrow. Can’t wait.

Box Score: Magic 100, Cavaliers 84

Maybe the Cavaliers should have kept Luke Harangody around for this game, too.

On paper, the Cavaliers should have had a chance in this game. With Dwight Howard already out for this game with an injury, his backup Big Baby Davis went down with injury early in this contest. That should have cracked the door open for the Cavaliers to play a tough game and sneak out a win.

Instead, the Cavaliers fell behind by 20 early. A couple times they tried to go on runs, closing the gap to 9 points here, 12 points there. But every time, the Magic answered with a run of their own to expand their lead again. It’s easy, and perhaps appropriate, to blame the Cavaliers sluggish offense on this being their 3rd game in 3 days. But the NBA is no place for excuses, and really this was just an all around disappointing effort from the wine and gold.

Too many turnovers (17, compared to 6 for Orlando), poor shooting (37% compared to Orlando’s 45%), and just poorly executed half court offense plagued the team all day. Antawn Jamison returned to score 21 points, and Donald Sloan had a career high 15 points, but it’s hard to really highlight any positives from this game.

There are now 2 weeks left in the season, and the Cavaliers will be back to the grind Tuesday in Detroit. The Cavaliers played tough Friday and Saturday, so the weekend wasn’t all bad. But this will be a game to forget for Cleveland.

Break up those Wahoos.  This win makes it three in a row, and puts the team back to the even-water mark for the year.

The Tribe finalized their weekend pounding of the Royals, a series in which they scored 32 runs.  It was three days ago when we worried about the offense, if you recall.  Holla.

Box Score: Pacers 104, Cavaliers 98 (OT)

Whether you believe the Indiana Pacers are for real or not, the fact is right now the Pacers are the 3 seed in the Eastern Conference. With the Cavaliers playing the 2nd night of a back to back, this was sure to be a tough challenge for the young Cavs team.

The Cavaliers came out and showed tremendous fight in this game. For most of the contest, this was a closely contested game. In the 4th quarter the Cavaliers went on an 18-1 run to break open a lead, only to go almost 4 minutes without scoring allowing the Pacers to take what seemed like the lead for good.

But the Pacers’ George Hill missed 3 of 4 free throws late to open the door, and Lester Hudson took full advantage, knocking down a floater with 1.2 seconds left to send the game to overtime. Unfortunately the Pacers were just too strong in overtime and the Cavaliers, at the end of the day, just weren’t good enough in this game to pull out the win.

Hudson wasn’t able to find his outside shot in this game, but still managed to score 19 points. Antawn Jamison lead the Cavaliers with 21 points and Samardo Samuels chipped in 13 off the bench, but the Cavaliers couldn’t find enough scoring outside those 3 players to steal a win from the Pacers. This is the kind of loss you can live with, though. Much better than the 25 point blowouts of last week.

Box Score: Bobcats 90, Cavaliers 103

Maybe there’s something to this whole Lesanity thing after all?

The Cavaliers took a lead into halftime, then came out cold in the 2nd half and saw the Bobcats come back and take the lead. From there, Lester Hudson took over. With Cavs owner Dan Gilbert sitting in with Fred and AC in the TV broadcast, Lester once again showed his boss why he belongs on the Cavaliers roster.

Hudson finished the game with 25 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 assists in this his 3rd straight game with 23+ points. Granted, those games were against all lottery teams in Toronto, New Jersey, and Charlotte, but still, you can’t take anything away from the way this guy is playing right now.

Overall the Cavaliers had 5 players in double digits, with the old guys Parker and Jamison chipping in 19 and 17 points respectively. All in all a nice win for the wine and gold.

Box Score: Blue Jays 7, Indians 4

Well, at least Ubaldo Jimenez pitched well.  The Tribe did their best to mirror their opening day debacle, complete with the strong starting performance, weak hitting and 9th inning mishap from the pen (with Vinnie Pestano doing the honors), the multiple extra innings and all the way down to the final score. Good times.

Derek Lowe goes for the Tribe tomorrow.

Box Score: Blue Jays 7, Indians 4

The longest home-opener in the history of Major League Baseball sends the Indians home as hard-luck losers. Following a masterful eight-inning performance by Justin Masterson — 8 IP, 10K, 1 BB, 1 ER — closer Chris Perez was all over the map, ultimately allowing three runs and the tie game. The bullpen would ultimately be depleted, leaving Jays catcher JP Arencibia to place a ball deep into the left field home run porch, plating three. This would all go down in front of the largest Opening Day crowd in Progressive Field history.

Box Score: Bucks 107, Cavs 98

Well, this one wasn’t as bad as the last few, but a loss is a loss. Once again, Anthony Parker (!) led the Cavaliers in scoring with Antawn Jamison still struggling from the field and the point guard rotation consisting of Donald Sloan and Lester Hudson. The two D-league call-ups actually combined for a solid night, totaling 21 points and 14 assists. Tristan Thompson (+13 on the night) came a rebound shy of another double-double. Milwuakee’s Monta Ellis dropped 30 points, with the bulk of his scoring coming in the final minutes of the game. The injury-riddled Cavs have now dropped nine games in a row and sit 13th in the Eastern Conference, fourth-worst winning percentage in the NBA.
