I don’t feel like it, but let’s talk Browns

Brandon Weeden huddle 2People are always talking about the Browns, it seems. Usually I’m one of the ones talking the most, but I don’t really feel like it right now. So to prove it to you, I’ll talk Browns just enough to tell you why it’s kind of boring to me right now.

Brandon Weeden’s name has been in the news because nobody can predict the future. Really, that’s what it comes down to, right? Brandon Weeden is under contract for the upcoming season. He didn’t play well enough for the Browns to not consider alternatives at the quarterback position. The Browns don’t know how all the pieces will land between the draft and free agency, so they’re not in a position to make guarantees. Frankly, unless they have one of the top seven to ten quarterbacks in the league on their roster, they shouldn’t be making anyone any guarantees anyway. So, it is natural to not have much to talk about regarding Brandon Weeden. He might earn the job. He might not. Depends on how he plays and who he ends up competing against. So what is there to talk about? [Read more...]

NFL News: Browns’ Richardson says Weeden struggled reading defenses

NFL Network’s Steve Wyche, via The Plain Dealer’s Mary Kay Cabot, claims he was told that the Cleveland Browns were forced to dial down their offense due to the inadequacies of quarterback Brandon Weeden.

Wyche claims that, in an off-camera conversation with running back Trent Richardson, the Browns quarterback struggled reading opposing defenses.

“He said as a rookie, [Weeden] really had trouble reading defenses from time to time and they had to skew their offense a little bit, sometimes somewhat predictable,” said Wyche. “He thinks things are going to open up a little bit, but he really does like Brandon Weeden.”

Richardson, who gave himself a C-plus grade for his rookie season, ultimately spoke on camera and stood behind his fellow teammate.

“I think he’ll be my quarterback,” Richardson said. “We can’t put too much on Brandon, especially as a rookie.

“We want to make sure he believes, he knows he’s going to be our quarterback. When it comes to stuff like that, we’ve just all got to be behind him.”

In 2012, the strong-armed Weeden threw for nearly 3,400 yards, but did so with a passer rating of 72.6 with an average of 6.55 yards per attempt. He is expected to face competition for the starting job this coming season, but is also said to be one of the biggest benefactors of new head coach Rob Chudzinski as well as Norv Turner’s down-field, shotgun-friendly offense coming to Cleveland.

While We’re Waiting… Tanking’s future in baseball?

Discussing how #tanking might be making its way into the MLB lexicon: “OK, that’s a loaded term, a dirty word in the world of sports. As we saw this offseason, however, there is a big difference between being the 10th-worst team in baseball and the 11th-worst. The New York Mets needed an outfielder. Actually, they needed three outfielders. As Michael Bourn’s free agency dragged into late January and then into February, it became clear the Mets were very interested in the speedy center fielder.” [David Schoenfield/ESPN's SweetSpot Blog] [Read more...]

Rams could have had RG3 and Richardson if they traded Bradford

The St. Louis Rams had their quarterback, that was there stance and they were sticking to it leading up to the 2012 draft. With Andrew Luck slated to go number one overall to the Colts, the Rams had options at number 2. Having drafted Sam Bradford first overall in 2010 draft, new Rams’ coach Jeff Fisher and general manager Les Snead wasted no time letting everyone know Sam Bradford would not be traded.

But what if they had put Bradford on the trading block and considered taking Robert Griffin III with the second overall pick? Well, SI.com’s Peter King told Erik Kuselias of NBC Sports that he believes they could have landed a high first round pick for the former number one overall in Bradford.

What team was interested enough to give up such a high pick for Bradford? You guessed it, the Cleveland Browns. NFL.com’s Chris Wesselling explains further.

The implication is that the Browns, holding the No. 4 pick and Bradford’s former play-caller in Pat Shurmur, were the team hot on his trail. Had the Rams been more open-minded on Griffin, they may have changed the course of the franchises in Cleveland and Washington as well as their own. As it is now, Fisher’s future is tied to Bradford’s performance after passing up a chance to draft the 2012 Rookie of the Year.

If the Rams had been willing to deal Bradford and the Browns had pulled the trigger on giving up the 4th pick for him, the Browns could have left the draft last April with Sam Bradford and an Alfred Morris or Doug Martin with their second first round pick.

It’s a lot of “ifs”, but one can help but wonder how different things would have been for Cleveland, if different at all.

NFL Rumor: Brandon Weeden could be traded

You never want to be a guy drafted by the previous regime when your future is in doubt. Brandon Weeden had a pretty typical up and down rookie year for a relatively bad team last season. He also played for a pretty questionable (at best) coaching staff and was surrounded by fellow rookies in key skill positions. Still, it seems that the new Cleveland Browns brass might have already seen enough. There are apparently some league rumblings that Weeden could be traded this off-season.

The tidbit from the National Football Post indicates that Joe Banner and Mike Lombardi “don’t think much” of Brandon Weeden. While, they haven’t said much about Weeden recently, we certainly know that Lombardi wasn’t a fan of the selection at the time Tom Heckert 1 made the selection. So that’s not at all unreasonable to assume that they “don’t think much” of him.

The Post also says that they could trade him “when they can get something for him.” Not if, mind you, but when. This indicates that either the sources of the rumor, or the writer himself still thinks that Weeden, coming off a very rookie-like season, might still be able to give them something back of value. Then again, “something” isn’t exactly indicative of anything substantial.

One thing’s for sure. Quarterbacks are always in demand in the NFL and someone will always give more than they are worth in trade. Still, it is highly doubtful that the Browns can get anything close to an approximation of the value of the 22nd pick they used a year ago to draft him.

NFL Draft: Browns should avoid selecting a quarterback early per Mel Kiper

While the Cleveland Browns front office looks to address the quarterback position this offseason, ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr feels that, if the team were to desire to do so via the draft, they could be in for a bit of a gamble as current quarterback Brandon Weeden could have been the top passer taken had he been able to wait until 2013 to declare for the NFL.

“Obviously you look at where the quarterbacks are this season,” Kiper said via conference call on Wednesday. “There’s not one that there’s consensus on. So it’s possible he could’ve been the first quarterback taken this year.”

The Browns, selecting sixth-overall in the upcoming draft, are widely considered to be addressing the pass rush to accommodate Ray Horton’s change to the 3-4 defense. Kiper added that if the Browns were considering using their first-round selection on a quarterback, it would be a substantial risk given the current player pool.

“You look at [West Virginia's] Geno Smith and [USC's] Matt Barkley and Brandon Weeden, it would’ve been a tough call,” Kiper said. “It would’ve been a tough, tough call. Nobody right now is in this draft saying, ‘if I’m Cleveland, I’ve got to take this quarterback even though I have Brandon Weeden.’ There’s no quarterback that screams out, saying, ‘take me, even though you have Weeden because I’m that much better.’ There’s nobody. So I don’t think Cleveland’s going to be able to find that guy.”

Weeden, who was out out eligibility as the quarterback of Oklahoma State, went 22nd overall to the Browns in 2012. They have been rumored to be in the mix for Baltimore’s Joe Flacco in the event he is able to test the free agent market. Kiper has the Browns taking Florida State defensive Bjoern Werner at No. 6 in his most recent mock draft.

NFL Rumor: Browns do not consider Colt McCoy a ‘viable starting option’

In his latest column, long-time Cleveland Plain Dealer columnist Terry Pluto says that the Cleveland Browns do not consider former starter Colt McCoy a “viable starting option” for the vertical offense employed by newly hired head coach Rob Chudzinski.

Wherein both McCoy and last year’s starter Brandon Weeden were shoe-horned into the West Coast under-center offense, Pluto writes that Chudzinski and offensive coordinator Norv Turner are considerably more open to shotgun-based formations..

Of the 39 QBs examined by the popular stat-based website Profootballfocus, only Houston’s Matt Schaub (34 percent) threw a lower percentage of his passes from the shotgun than Cleveland’s Weeden. The rookie was more effective from the shotgun — where he played in college — with a QB rating of 79.1 with eight touchdown passes and seven interceptions. Under center, it was 67.7 with six TDs and 10 picks. Pluto adds that Weeden’s league-leading 25 passes batted down is partly due to being so often under center, where he’s closer to the defensive linemen as he releases the ball in timing patterns.

The Browns are expected to bring in competition for Brandon Weeden, so it would make sense for McCoy to be dangled as trade bait — whether or not he was “dangled” a season ago is unknown. Thanks to escalators in his contract, McCoy is owed $2.325 million in 2013.

NFL News: Browns will have a quarterback competition heading in 2013

Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam said today that his team will not only bring in a new quarterback this offseason, but whomever they sign will compete with Brandon Weeden for the starting job.

“I think [Norv Turner] and [Rob Chudzinski] have been very open that they like a lot of what Brandon [Weeden] does,” said Haslam, ”but we’re going to have competition at that position, and I think competition makes us all better and we’ll see where that competition comes from.”

The Browns have been rumored to be in the mix for the potential services of current San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith. Smith is likely to be released or traded this offseason and he has a history with Turner, the team’s recently signed Browns offensive coordinator. Mary Kay Cabot of The Cleveland Plain Dealer has also linked the team to Michael Vick due to his history with former Eagles front office wizard Joe Banner.

With the NFL’s free agency period set to kick of on March 12, the Browns will once again take part, but will not look to make any large moves.

“[The front office] is going to look at free agency and we’re going to look at the draft, and I think we’ll be selective in what we do in free agency,” said Haslam. “I don’t think you’ll see us making any big splashy, high-priced moves because I think we’ve said all along we’re going to build through the draft.”

NFL Rumor: Alex Smith the “front-runner” of Browns quarterback pursuit

The Cleveland Browns have officially had their names thrown in the hat as a potential future employer of current San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith.

While NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that the Bills, Cardinals, Chiefs and “maybe” Eagles have shown interest in the veteran, ESPN Cleveland beat reporter Tony Grossi reports that “you’d have to say that Smith is the front-runner to be the quarterback Joe Banner and Mike Lombardi pursue.”

Smith, 28, is due to make $7.5 million in 2013, with $1 million guaranteed. If he is on the 49ers’ roster on April 1, the remaining $6.5 million is guaranteed. Smith also is due $7.5 million in 2014. the No. 1 overall pick in 2005, Smith was completing a league-high 70.2 percent of passes. He had 13 touchdown passes and five interceptions. His passer rating was 104.1 – 25 points higher than his career mark. Smith, who was 6-2 with the 49ers before being usurped by Colin Kaepernick folllowing a concussion, reportedly told the team that he wishes to be released so that he can continue his career playing as opposed to watching. Rapoport believes that the 49ers will instead attempt to trade the quarterback, garnering a potential mid-round pick.

Grossi adds that if the Browns do in fact acquire Smith, it will mean the end of Brandon Weeden, joining the likes of Tim Couch, Charlie Frye, Brady Quinn and Colt McCoy on the list of quarterbacks who either fell victim to changing regimes or failed development.

What do the Browns know about Brandon Weeden?

Weeden ScreamThe Cleveland Browns have been committal about being non-committal about their quarterback situation. From Rob Chudzinski to Michael Lombardi and yesterday Norv Turner the Browns have been steadfast in putting barely a single word on the record that leads anyone to believe that Weeden is first on the depth chart right this very second. Even if you’ve somehow found a way to infer that, it is only by default because that’s the way the season ended and there hasn’t been a roster move that easily leads everyone to speculation otherwise. The Browns claim to need to see more tape study, but it seems to me that a need for more tape study is all the sign of a lack of confidence that I need to see.

I am not saying anything about Brandon Weeden, personally. I think he had a pretty typical rookie year, statistically speaking. He definitely trailed many of his rookie brethren in terms of rookie performance too. I’m just characterizing the vibes I’m reading from the public comments thus far. And maybe it’s true that they need to see more tape. Maybe they will unleash those hours of footage of Shurmur-led practices and decide that Weeden is a guy they can mold and that under their new tutelage he’ll become a front line NFL starter. It just seems to me that the guy who plays the most important position on the team who also put 15 games of real NFL video into the universe this season is likely to have made enough of an impression on the team that they might be willing to say something that tips their hand that they like him. Of course that’s only true if they were given a positive impression.

To be fair, Norv Turner was somewhat complimentary of Weeden because he helped the Browns beat Turner’s Chargers this season. Then again, Weeden had a QB rating of 55.9 against the Chargers completing 11 of 27 passes for 129 yards in a 7-6 win. [Read more...]

Browns questions abound

Michael_LombardiNow that the Super Bowl is set and the Browns hires are pretty much all set, there’s nothing left but to wonder about a lot of things. No, not silly already decided things about keeping a certain owner out of the Hall of Fame. That’s been decided a long time ago and as far as I can tell nothing at all (at all) has changed despite death and patches. Other than the obvious though, I don’t have a lot of answers. I have a bunch of questions that I’ll be keeping in mind as the off-season progresses.

  1. Every leak that came out over the last six months about the Browns (especially the Lombardi one) has pretty much come true. How about the one from January 5th reported by Will Burge that Colt McCoy was told he was in the next coach’s plans? Was that information based on the presumption that Chip Kelly was going to be the next Browns’ head coach? Was that more of a statement about what Joe Banner and Michael Lombardi think about Brandon Weeden? When asked about Josh Gordon’s tweet last week, Lombardi joked that the receiver had nothing to worry about, yet he needed to see more tape on Weeden before commenting. [Read more...]

Is Derek Anderson joining the Browns to teach or start?

Derek Anderson Pro Bowl“Are you kidding me?” my wife said to me as we were driving to my parents’ house on Saturday afternoon when I informed her of the Derek Anderson back to Cleveland rumors.

My wife (as many of you already know) isn’t a Browns fan. Sometimes I run Browns things by her just to take the pulse of a non-Cleveland sports fan to see if I’m nuts. Yes, my wife is biased in a way where she wishes the Browns were a better team because it would make her life easier without so many miserable Sundays per year, but that’s where it begins and ends. She has no affinity for any of the players, really, even if she did fall in love with Ben Watson and his adorable family as they were featured on “Road Tested.” Trust me, even that was a tough sell because there’s so much harbored sports hatred for current and former Patriots even as Indianapolis’ rivalry with them kinda left town when they released Peyton Manning. Even all that said, my wife’s response to the Derek Anderson rumors just about sums it all up.

What a huge, shocking win for the Bucks: “The jury has been out on the Ohio State Buckeyes. But after weeks of deliberations in Central Ohio a verdict has been reached. The Buckeyes are for real. Jumping out to a 29-8 first-half lead, Ohio State withstood a furious second-half rally by No. 2 Michigan to hand the Wolverines their first loss of the season, 56-53. Michigan, the lone remaining unbeaten, was attempting to become the No. 1-ranked team in the country for the first time in 20 years.” [Kyle Rowland/Eleven Warriors] [Read more...]

NFL Report: Colt McCoy might be in Browns’ future plans

Again, amid all of the coaching rumors, the Browns have been abuzz on Twitter for other topics too in the last 48 hours. This one was big last night, as ESPN Cleveland reporter Will Burge shared some insight on Colt McCoy’s potential future with the organization:

This also would tie into Brandon Weeden’s comments from last week about his apparent dislike for operating potential coach Chip Kelly’s spread offense. (Notably, Weeden tweeted last night he was kidding about that earlier statement.) So while McCoy might not necessarily be the immediate starter, it’s likely his mobility doesn’t hurt his candidacy.

Mike Florio from Pro Football Talk later responded to Burge’s report with some additional intel on McCoy and Kelly, who are both represented by the same agent. Florio said this is “possibly no coincidence” and likely just “a harmless effort to create interest in a quarterback.”

Heckert on difference between Browns and Colts

Tom Heckert had a statement released by the Browns today, but he also spoke to WKNR’s Tony Grossi and gave this little nugget.

“The difference between us and the Colts is the Colts won the close games and we didn’t,” Heckert said. “We’ve proved we can play with anybody. I think the outlook is awesome.”

In many ways Heckert’s right, but if you look a little bit deeper and ask why the Browns didn’t win their close games you arrive at two things almost every time, in all likelihood.

1. Quarterback

2. Coaching

How much of those two things Tom Heckert had control over is anyone’s guess. Certainly Pat Shurmur was always mostly tied to Mike Holmgren who worked with Pat’s uncle Fritz. Additionally, it has always been speculated that Mike Holmgren was the driving force behind drafting Brandon Weeden. Even if Tom Heckert would have drafted Brandon Weeden, it is usually assumed that Holmgren drove the decision to do it with the second pick in the first round rather than waiting until the second round.

Maybe it’s one of those baseless assumptions and rumors, but it sure seemed that way with the press conferences after the draft.

WFNY Top 10 Cleveland Sports Stories of 2012: #3 Trent Richardson Headlines Browns’ Youth Movement

2012 was one crazy year in the wild wacky world of Cleveland Sports. Some would tell you 2012 was as bad as it has ever been here. As the year comes to a close, like we have done the last four years, WFNY will take a look at what we view to be the 10 biggest sports stories affecting our local sports scene. Each day through the rest of the year, we will be counting down from ten to one. We started the Buckeyes Final Four trip. Number nine is something that happened just a short two weeks ago. The Ohio State perfect 12-0 season was number eight while Chris Perez’ harsh and honest words clocked in at number seven. Our sixth-biggest story saw our first of two straight from the Cavaliers, the drafting of Dion Waiters and Tyler Zeller. Up next was Kyrie Irving receiving the NBA Rookie of the Year award. Coming in at number four was Manny Acta’s fall from managerial grace.

#3 Trent Richardson Headlines Browns’ Youth Movement

This season the Browns were led by rookies in passing, rushing and receiving. (Still mad I didn’t get so much as a cap tip from the Browns stat department. You’re welcome.)

Trent Richardson’s 950 yards didn’t just lead the team this year, they were the most by a Browns rookie RB ever. Yes, he played in more games and had more attempts than Jim Brown in his rookie season. Stop for a moment though and think about the comparison. You want to split hairs about Richardson’s season compared to Jim Brown? Ok. I fully submit Richardson’s rookie year was only the second best in franchise history. And that’s good enough. He also set a club rookie marks for rushing touchdowns. [Read more...]

NFL News: Weeden, Richardson and Brown listed as “out” for Sunday

Cleveland Browns cornerback Sheldon Brown’s streak of consecutive games played will end at 175 and he will miss the team’s Week 17 barn-burner against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Brown suffered a concussion midway through the Browns’ Week 16 loss to the Denver Broncos when wide receiver Brandon Stokley lowered a shoulder into him on a pick play to free up Demaryius Thomas on a crossing pattern. The veteran leader will hit the free agent market this offseason as a 34-year-old coming off of a solid season with 57 tackles, two interceptions and a touchdown.

Brown will be accompanied on the sidelines by rookies Brandon Weeden (shoulder) and Trent Richardson (ankle) , and tight end Jordan Cameron (concussion). Thaddeus Lewis, Montario Hardesty, and Brad Smelley will all likely see an increased role during the team’s final game of the 2012 season.

WFNY Podcast – 2012-12-29 – Craig talks to Dave Bryan from SteelersDepot.com about the Steelers matchup on Sunday

I didn’t quite know what to expect when I set about to talk to a Steelers blogger about the matchup this weekend between Thad Lewis’ Browns and the Pittsburgh Steelers. I ended up getting some really nice insight from a real pro who has vast knowledge of the league in general and the Steelers and AFC North in particular. He was quite objective as I think most at WFNY try to be with regard to the Browns. Although, I’m not sure that he and I will ever agree on James Harrison.

You can find Dave Bryan at SteelersDepot.com and on Twitter.

And I’m not sure if you want to listen to it due to topic, but Dave produces one of the best sounding and most professional podcasts I’ve heard. The Terrible Podcast.

Here’s what else we touched on:

  • Mike Tomlin and how reactionary some Steelers fans can be
  • Should the Browns put an asterisk next to the first victory over the Steelers?
  • Some Steelers fans think the team should lose this game for draft status.
  • Dave and Craig both hate the thought of losing games on purpose and think it’s stupid
  • Is James Harrison a head hunter? Craig thinks yes. Dave thinks no. Both try to make rational points about their opinions.
  • Who could be let go from the vaunted Steelers defense before next season?
  • Mike Tomlin’s questionable in-game decisions and how similar some of them sound to Pat Shurmur
  • The difference between winning and losing in the NFL
  • Trap games and whether they truly exist ina league with parity
  • Keys to the game and ultimately Dave’s prediction that the Steelers blow out Thad Lewis and the Browns
  • Craig not being able to disagree with that assessment, unfortunately.
  • Have the Browns packed it in with a lame duck head coach?
  • Should Pat Shumur have another year?

Browns vs. Steelers Reader’s Survey

It’s going to be the toughest game to predict all year in all likelihood. The Browns and Steelers don’t have anything to play for but pride and paychecks. The teams are a mystery right now at least on the Browns’ side of the equation as Brandon Weeden, Trent Richardson and even Colt McCoy are questionable at best and out in all probability. It could be the last game as a member of the Browns for Phil Dawson, Josh Cribbs and head coach Pat Shurmur.

Given that, let’s make with the predictions! [Read more...]
