Carlos Santana Headed To 7-Day Concussion DL

Cleveland Indians catcher Carlos Santana is headed to the MLB’s new 7-day concussion disabled list. Santana took a foul ball off his mask in Friday night’s loss to the White Sox and left the game in the 8th inning, complaining of dizziness. Manager Manny Acta said he was removed as a precaution and that he would be re-evaluated on Saturday.

When the club got to US Cellular Field on Saturday, triple-A catcher Luke Carlin had a locker set up and Santana’s name was not on the lineup sheet, according to Jordan Bastian. Matt Underwood said that Santana was headed to the 7-day DL and Acta, speaking with the press before the game, said that’s where he’ll end up.

Along with Santana, shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera also left Friday night’s game with a tight hamstring. At this point it does not appear Cabrera will need a trip to the DL and will continue to be day-to-day, almost certainly missing the rest of the White Sox series this weekend.

Asdrubal Cabrera, Carlos Santana Out For Game 2 Against White Sox

Well, Manny Acta said the Indians would have to see how both Asdrubal Cabrera and Carlos Santana were doing when the team got to the park on Saturday, and it looks like both will not be able to go in the second game of the series. Both young stars were removed from Friday’s game as a “precaution” and they’re going to be held out again as the Indians try to avoid further injury which could derail what appears to be a contending season.

So Acta will put out an significantly inferior lineup against the dominating Jake Peavy on Saturday. Both Cabrera and Santana are down, and Travis Hafner was already out, staying back in Cleveland to have his sore right knee treated. The little bit of good news is the return of Jack Hannahan, who the Tribe desperately needed on the left side of the infield. Jose Lopez will DH and hit cleanup in this murderers’ row, and he’ll be protected by Casey Kotchman and Johnny Damon. Juan Diaz, who was promoted yesterday from Akron, will play short in place of Asdrubal and bat 8th, while Laser Lou will fill in for Santana and bat 9th.

Carlos Santana, Asdrubal Cabrera Removed From White Sox Game As Precaution

Friday night at US Cellular field went from bad to worst in the late innings, as both Asdrubal Cabrera and Carlos Santana were taken out of the game with apparent injuries. Manny Acta removed Cabrera in the 7th inning with what was later called hamstring tightness. Santana left the game in the 8th inning after taking a foul ball off his facemask. With Tribe already playing without Jack Hannahan and Travis Hafner, who stayed back in Cleveland with a sore knee, Friday night could have been a catastrophic turning point in what seemed to be a season on the rise for the Tribe.

After the game, Acta said that both were removed as a precaution during the blowout loss to the Sox. The manager told MLB.com’s Jordan Bastian that both could have likely continued to play, but with the outcome not in doubt, discretion was the better part of valor. He did not say if both would be ready to go on Saturday, taking a wait-and-see approach. The recently promoted Juan Diaz, who was originally slated to stay with the big league club until Monday when Josh Tomlin returns, would spell Cabrera at shortstop if he cannot go. According to Acta, Santana complained of dizziness after taking the foul ball off the mask. He will be re-evaluated with Cabrera before Saturday’s game.

Indians 6 Red Sox 5: Santana Injury Overshadows Win

It should have been a night of celebration. The young Indians, flush with guys making the league minimum, went into Fenway Park and took down the Red Sox in a 6-5 thriller. It was their third straight win and moved them to 20-14 in their last 34 games. They did it again with a bottom four of Jordan Brown, Shelley Duncan, Jayson Nix, and Jason Donald. Chris Perez came in and notched his third consecutive save in as many days, but none of it seemed to matter.

All any of us could talk about or think of was the horrific collision at home plate involving Indians uber-prospect Carlos Santana. [Read more...]
