WFNY Exclusive: Cleveland State’s Gary Waters Discusses Brown’s Status, Cole’s Future and the NCAA Tourney

There is a lot of losing going on around Cleveland lately, and we – as sports fans in this town - could all do ourselves a collective favor by turning some attention towards Gary Waters and his CSU Vikings Hoop Squad.

To say they’re on a tear would be putting it lightly.  Through sixteen games, the Vikings’ record reads 15-1 (4-0 within the Horizon League), and they are heading to Hinkle Field House for a game against the team who lost to Duke in the NCAA finals last season.

Whether they win that one at Butler or not, the national attention on the Vikings has been generated across the college basketball landscape.  Recent (January 2nd) RPI rankings had the Vikings at No. 27 overall, and they have been ranked No. 1 in the Mid-Major Polls for several weeks. Both the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today Polls have noticed as well, placing the Vikes at Nos. 37 and 38, respectively.

A win on Friday could vault Cleveland State into the Top 25, but the winning hasn’t been an accident, per head coach Gary Waters, who was kind enough to take some time with WFNY this week. Per Waters, it is a result of a commitment to be better, made by his team this past summer. [Read more...]

Cavs Part Ways With Jackson, Mitchell; Roster Stands at 17

One of last year’s feel-good stories officially came to an end on Wednesday as the Cavaliers have waived former Cleveland State point guard Cedric Jackson along with forward Tasmin Mitchell.

The two players combined for six minutes during the preseason, signaling that the end was near as the team creeps towards their October 27th opener against the Boston Celtics.  The roster, however, currently stands at 17 players – a number that has to be reduced to 15 by 6 PM on October 25th.

Cedric Jackson Stays for 10 More Days

Cedric JacksonYour Eastern Conference leading Cleveland Cavaliers announced this morning that PG Cedric Jackson has signed a second, 10-day contract. As much as I like Cedric and his story of getting to the the Cavaliers, the second 10-day is not a great sign in regards to the progress of Delonte West and his broken ring finger on his shooting hand. Coach Brown, Meet Cedric Jackson

cedric-jacksonI had the chance to talk to the newest Cavalier and former CSU Viking Cedric Jackson. When Delonte West went down with his finger injury, many commenters here were hopeful that Cedric might get the call. Known as a defensive specialist (DPOY in the Horizon League his senior year) Cedric seemed to be a logical choice for the Cavs, although Coby Karl wouldn’t have been a surprise either. Cedric was in Erie when he got the call that the Cavs wanted him on a ten day contract and Cedric jumped at the chance.

Cedric said he was excited to be back in the area and specifically to be close to his college coaches and friends. He called his call up a blessing, and a great feeling. I asked if he had any goals for the season-

“Yeah, I just want to do my job to the best of my ability when I get the opportunity.”

He mentioned his time playing against the Bobcats and Russell Westbrook and was proud of his defense in limited action. Jackson knows that his role when he comes in isn’t going to be to really run the offense, but to be a defensive stopper for whatever minutes he gets.

His first order of business might be to introduce himself to coach Mike Brown.

I asked coach Brown if he had any confidence in Cedric’s ability to run the offense despite Jackson’s short time with the team, and this was his reaction- [Read more...]

It’s Cedric: Former Viking to Fill PG Void

cedric-jacksonYesterday, Rick wrote a piece examining the options at PG to fill the void created by injuries to Mo Williams and Delonte West.  The seriousness of Delonte’s finger injury is still unknown.  In the interim, the Cavs, due to the broken finger, have ruled him out of tonight’s challenging match-up against the Thunder and categorized him day-to-day going forward.  That specific injury status is particularly nebulous and cause for anxiety in some instances as David Halberstam articulated in Breaks of the Game where Bill Walton’s distaste for the possibly misleading day-to-day status was evident.  Delonte is obviously a different case in a different time.  He is one of the toughest players on the team and in the league when it comes to playing with pain.  Cavs fans, however, should not expect to see him on the floor for at least the next two games with the potential for an extended hiatus.

Rick wrote that immediate help would most likely be sought in the form of a 10 day contract for a worthy D-leaguer.  He linked to D-League authority Scott Schroeder at Ridiculous Upside.  In his piece examining the Cavs’ options for a D league PG, Schroeder nailed his analysis and prediction and called former CSU Viking Cedric Jackson a darkhorse among the group of potential call ups.  Many Cavs fans should be familiar with Jackson’s work on the collegiate level at CSU.  He was the sparkplug leader of the Viking team last year that upset Butler in the Horizon Conference tournament and dominated fourth seeded Wake Forest in the NCAA tournament.  Jackson was tremendous all season but his play in that Wake game garnered national attention.  How has he been doing so far at the pro level?

The Top 10 Moments/Stories in Cleveland Sports in 2009

This is part two in our ten-part series chronicling the top 10 moments/stories in Cleveland sports during the 2009 Calendar year. We started yesterday with The Indians 10 run comeback win over Tampa Bay, and we will continue with today’s selection.

clevelandstatebasketball2009Champs!#9 Cleveland State’s run to the NCAA Tournament and their upset over fourth seeded Wake Forest

1986 was a long, long time ago for followers of the Cleveland State basketball program. The success of Kevin Mackey’s “Run and Stun” teams produced a new building in the Convocation Center, now known as the Wolstein Center. The thought was that the program would take off after the run of great teams that always competed for the AMCU-8 title. However, that success never sustained.

Cleveland State had become an after-thought under Mike Boyd, Rollie Massimino, and Mike Garland. When former Kent State and Rutgers head coach Gary Waters took over, he vowed to have the Vikings back at the top of the Horizon League. He followed through on his promise in 2009. [Read more...]

Cleveland State Recap: The Dream Ends In a Hail of Bricks

During Friday night’s upset blowout over fourth-seeded Wake Forest, the Cleveland State Vikings came out a house of fire, jumping to a 9-0 lead and knocking down the three ball from all angles. The same recipe would have to be used if the Vikings were going to pull off back to back stunners and advance to the Sweet 16.

Unfortunately, the best laid plans crashed in a hail of misfires and bricks. Arizona’s full court pressure and suffocating zone never allowed the Viking shooters to get into any sort of rhythm in the 71-57 Wildcat win. Shooting has been the bugaboo for this tough, physical group all year long. It is one thing to shoot 3-23 from deep against Youngstown State. It’s quite another to do it against an extremely athletic and talented Arizona club, that boasts three potential NBA first round picks (Jordan Hill, Chase Budinger, Nic Wise). [Read more...]

Lucky Number 13: Cleveland State Vikings Blow Out Wake Forest 84-69

csu-wake-forestThe last time that the Cleveland State Vikings were in the NCAA tournament is now a well-known 23 years ago.  That year, one of the biggest upsets was when the Kevin Mackey-led Vikings toppled the Bobby Knight-led Hoosiers of Indiana.

The last time that the Vikings current coach, Gary Waters, won a tournament game, he was the head coach of Kent State.  In 2001, Waters took a then 13-seed Golden Flash team and once again upset the Indiana Hoosiers.

The next time that Waters was given a 13-seed bid in the tournament was last night, as the stage was set to take on the once top-ranked Demon Decons of Wake Forest.  And this time, a combination of the above-mentioned wins gets combined into a second-round birth in the NCAAs, as the Waters-led Vikings not only won last night’s game, but came out firing and never looked back.

NCAA Tournament Preview: Cleveland State vs. Wake Forest

waters-trophyWhen Sunday’s CBS Selection show hit the airways, the Cleveland State Vikings gathered at the Wolstein Center to see where they would be sent. This was a moment 23 years in the making. Luckily, the waiting game didn’t last that long. In fact, CSU’s first round matchup with Wake Forest (Friday approximately 9:40 PM) was one of the first four pairings shown. The Vikings are a 13-seed in the Midwest, which hands-down is the toughest region of the four. [Read more...]

Dancin…Dancin…DANCIN! Cleveland State is Headed to the NCAA Tournament

Two times this season the Cleveland State Vikings had the lead with less than a minute to go against the conference leader and rival Butler. Two times, they lost. CSU head coach Gary Waters was determined to not let this happen again. As he told his team before the game (caught by the ESPN cameras) “two times we had these guys, and we let them get away.”

This time they didn’t. [Read more...]

Horizon League Finals: Can the Vikings Overcome Their Bugaboo?

CSU ButlerDecember 4th, 2008 – The Wolstein Center in Cleveland. Cleveland State leads by seven points at the half over the undefeated Butler Bulldogs. Despite shooting just 1-11 from three point land and 26% from the field, a J’Nathan Bullock layup gave the Vikings a 48-47 lead with just a five seconds left.

Then, little used Butler guard Zach Hahn received a pass at the three-point lined, turned a jacked up a shot as the clock hit all zeroes. It bottomed. Butler wins 50-48 in a game that changed hands three teams in the last 19 seconds. [Read more...]

A Cleveland State Scare: Vikings Survive Detroit

I was happy to be down as the Wolstein Center for Horizon League Tournament first round action last night, expecting to see an easy walk-over by the 22-10, third-seeded Cleveland State Vikings. After all, Detroit came to town at 2-14 in the conference, losers of six straight, and had been swept this season by the Vikes with relative ease. Everyone in the building was thinking the exact same thing just before tip-off; everyone except the Titans and their coach Ray McCallum.

Late in the first half, the UDM’s Thomas Kennedy hit back to back jumpers off of back to back Cleveland State turnovers, and the Titans were within one at 22-21. At the half, CSU was up just one. Adjustments had to be made, especially on Kennedy, who hit five of his first seven shots and was heating up. Coach Gary Waters went to a box and one on Kennedy, locking him down with a combination of Trey Harmon and Horizon League Defensive Player of the year Cedric Jackson. [Read more...]
