Angry Agents Proving the Point for Hardline Owners

As it appears we might be nearing a labor deal in the NBA, the rhetoric hasn’t done anything but ramp up.  The players seem like they are possibly on the verge of agreeing to a 50/50 split of basketball related income, but they might have a few pushes left on system issues.  It also seems that as they get closer and closer to signing off, the players (maybe unwittingly?) feel the need to scream louder to make it seem like they are putting up a big enough fight.  Here’s the rub though.  The players are now fighting system issues while not fighting the BRI split anymore?

I’ve been saying all along that calling Dan Gilbert greedy and claiming he wanted to go after every cent of income was missing the point with regard to his goals.  I always thought that he was content having the Cavaliers be a loss leader of sorts as he competed for championships and opened casinos.  When his ability to compete for championships was in jeopardy, that’s when he really started to get after it.  Now that the money is apparently no longer an issue and the system issues are front and center and the rhetoric is ramping to a fever pitch an agent has gone out and made Dan Gilbert’s point for him. Sports, Politics and Kevin Garnett

Yesterday the news exploded because of what Kevin Garnett purportedly said to Charlie Villanueva during a basketball game in which the Celtics destroyed the Pistons 109-86.  Villanueva tweeted after the game that KG’s trash talk went too far when KG lobbed the words “cancer patient” in Charlie Villanueva’s general direction.  Kevin Garnett is a notorious trash talker.  Charlie Villanueva has a disease, alopecia that causes him to look different.  KG (according to CV31) used that as fodder for personal trash talk.  KG is now on record saying that he told Villanueva that he was “cancerous to his team and the league.”  There are so many sides to this thing that need exploring, so where should we begin?

Let’s start with the irony of this name-calling incident coming to the forefront on election day.  During a month where, especially for Ohioans, there have been near constant advertisements lobbing various accusations and names in all different directions, yesterday was supposed to be the end of the name-calling for a while.  The votes were being counted and the results were being reported and our reprieve was supposed to be from the phone calls, pieces of mail and TV ads.  Then, Charlie Villanueva takes a page almost directly out of the political playbook in exposing his opponent, not on the court of play where it matters, but in the lights of the public.  You’ll have to excuse me as I wretch for even having to consider that our sports worlds and political worlds are colliding in hideous fashion. While We’re Waiting… Ferry’s Master Plan, Browns Backfield, and the Aeros Bullpen

Step away from the ledge, fans: “It hurts to think about it as a Cavs fan, because Cavs fans are running out of patience right now (at least if your objective for this team is to add young athletic pieces around LeBron James). But although a guy like Tyson Chandler is only 26-years old, the Cavs took Shaq because of his expiring contract for 2010. In the end, that — not even Chandler’s health issues — was the ultimate trump card. So you tell me what that means.  We will get further proof of Danny Ferry’s 2010 intentions based not only on how he eventually ends up using the midlevel exception (or even using it at all), but how he deals with his own free agent, Anderson Varejao.” [Amar Panchmatia/Cavalier Attitude]

While We’re Waiting… Hedo Turkoglu, Detroit Signs Two, and Hector Rondon

smugly-hedo-turkogluWell I guess Turk isn’t going to Portland after all… “Free agent Hedo Turkoglu has backed out of his commitment to the Portland Trail Blazers and plans to sign with the Toronto Raptors, multiple league sources told Yahoo! Sports on Friday night. Turkoglu had agreed on a five-year, $50 million deal with the Blazers, but changed his mind and is headed for a five-year, $56 million deal with the Raptors. Toronto would have to renounce three free agents – Shawn Marion, Carlos Delfino and Anthony Parker – to create the cap space for Turkoglu.” [Adrian Wojnarowski/Yahoo Sports]

A statistically minded Pistons fan concedes that the two big signings won’t be enough for anything in the end: “Of course, if all we focus upon is scoring, then Gordon and Villanueva are above average players. But once we move past scoring we see that Gordon was below average last season with respect to rebounds, steals, turnovers, blocked shots, and assists. And Villanueva was below average with respect to steals, turnovers, and personal fouls (and not really far above average with respect to anything else). In sum, it looks like the Pistons have traded away valuable cap space for two players who are not going to take this team to a championship.” [Dave Berri/Wages of Wins]

Needs More Free Agency Talk!!!

charlie-villanuevaWith all of the NBA Free Agency talk that is surrounding us, there are so many scenarios out there involving the Cleveland Cavaliers. The one most talked about over the past couple of days involves “stretch” PF Charlie Villanueva. I won’t rehash what he can do for the Cavs if he were to come to Cleveland (if you so please, read Rock’s novel on the subject from yesterday), but I can spin it differently.

Today’s latest report has Villanueva and Ben Gordon in Detroit visiting with GM Joe Dumars. First of all, Cavs fans, do not freak out. So many of you already are, but just take a deep breath. Just because CV31 is visiting Detroit doesn’t mean he is 100% signing there. Jason Kidd is in New York today as well, you think he is a lock to sign with the Knicks? Of course he isn’t. Kidd is playing the game, as are Villanueva and Gordon. [Read more...]

NBA Free Agency Update: Villanueva to DET?

While we anxiously await the addition of a “stretch” power forward, a defensive stopper on the wing or anything of that ilk, I thought it would be best to update you all on the most recent grumblings around the league regarding the top-billed free agents.

smugly-hedo-turkogluHedo Turkoglu

Listening to WKNR last night, “J-Fed” kept mentioning the 12:01 call, and who it would be if said listener was in charge.  Well, it turns out that Hedo Turkoglu did receive a call at 12:01, and it was from the Portland Trailblazers.  Shortly thereafter, he was contacted by the names you will likely see a lot of given their ability to spend: Detroit, Memphis, Sacramento, and Toronto.  Noticeably missing is Orlando, but many of us saw this coming with the addition of Vince Carter coupled with the fact that the forward is looking for about $10 million per season.  There were talks of a sign-and-trade with the Raptors, which may not be out of the question, but for now, it looks like Turk will be out west next season.  Not necessarily a bad thing given that we’ll see a lot less of his smirk thanks to 10PM starts.  [Read more...]

Charlie Villanueva = Unrestricted Free Agent

Charlie VillanuevaAfter being discarded in the Eastern Conference Finals by the Orlando Magic last season, the Cleveland Cavaliers knew that changes had to come. Big changes. As in, more big players who could help the Cavaliers match up against teams like the Magic who were able to use their size advantages to control the paint both offensively and defensively against the Cavs. The Cavaliers wasted little time in addressing this concern by trading for Shaquille O’Neal, but by all accounts, Danny Ferry isn’t done.

One of the names that has grabbed the most traction among Cavs fans is Charlie Villanueva. However, the prospects of the Cavaliers being able to sign “CV31” always seemed slim at best. Being a restricted free agent (or so we thought), the Bucks would be able to match any offer made to the young PF, and with only the MLE at their disposal, many people always figured that $5-6 million was an amount the Bucks would be willing to match.

Which is why the news coming out of Milwaukee Monday night was so surprising. Throughout all of my following of the upcoming free agency season, I had yet to hear anyone seriously suggest there was a good chance the Bucks wouldn’t make Villanueva a qualifying offer. Some people, such as the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s Charles Gardner had subtly hinted that there was a chance the Bucks wouldn’t be able to make the qualifying offer, but after the moves the Bucks made last week, clearing Richard Jefferson’s salary, the popular opinion was that now the Bucks would be in a position now to at least make the qualifying offer and thus make sure CV31 was at least a restricted free agent.

According to Gardner, though, that’s not the case.    [Read more...]

Andy Varejao, Free Agent?

Bob Finnan of the News Herald is reporting that Varejao’s agent Dan Fegan has confirmed that his client will indeed opt out of the final year of his contract and become an unrestricted free agent on Wednesday. This isn’t unexpected. The Cavaliers were certainly prepared for this. It also doesn’t mean that Varejao won’t be back with the Cavs next season.

The Cavs can still negotiate with Andy, and do retain his ‘Bird Rights’ meaning they can go over the salary cap in order to retain his services. He is not a restricted free agent however, so the Cavs would not have the right to just match any offer that he receives.

Will Andy sign with the Cavs? Too many variables to tell at this point. It isn’t certain what the market will be for the big Brazilian. Most teams aren’t looking to make big offers this summer for free agents. Andy has proven to be quite versatile however, and that certainly will work in his advantage. It is also uncertain how the latest round of Charlie Villanueva rumors will affect Andy’s desire to resign with the Cavs.

Check back later for Rock’s analysis on Charlie V and the Cavs.

wedge-shapiroWait, you mean we’re not still in the hunt? “Cleveland fans are not as stupid as the current Indians regime might wish to believe. They can feed us heaping bowls of bullsh*t, and lord knows they try, about staying the course and sticking with what you’ve got, but we all know the truth: The Indians aren’t going anywhere. They have a couple of stars, a handful of above-average players, a few talented prospects, and a bunch of crap. Yet, in spite of this painfully obvious reality, we can’t ever seem to get an honest assessment from Wedge, Shapiro, or Dolan, about what’s really happening to this team.” [CMCR]

WFNY Email Conversations: The One Where We Talk About Anderson Varejao and Charlie Villanueva

By now you know the idea. We start talking through Gmail (just waiting for google wave!) and eventually we share it with you.

varejao-villanueva

Rick: Question- the Bucks trade is being reported as a salary saving move, allowing them to go after their own free agents. Then they pick up Amir Johnson. Does that mean anything for Charlie Villanueva? Could the Bucks pass on Charlie and focus on signing Sessions?

Jacob: Eh they just swapped Oberto for Amir Johnson. I would do that in a rush any day of the week, and I wouldn’t truly read too much into at. At 22 years old, Johnson is a decent player but couldn’t immediately jump in to start ahead of aging veterans Francisco Elson and Kurt Thomas at the power forward position for Milwaukee. They desperately need to extend Charlie V if they have any desire to compete this season. Johnson would be a good bench player in replace of Villanueva and starting center Andrew Bogut, but nothing more as of yet. [Read more...]

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

Cleveland fans probably have more questions than there are answers following the team’s disappointing playoff exit. Brian Windhorst has already answered one of those questions- namely will LeBron sign an extension this summer. (The answer is not likely, in case you missed it.)

sheedben-copy

More questions include decisions from Anderson Varejao (more than likely will opt out), Zydrunas Ilgauskas (more than likely will pick up his player option) and Ben Wallace (hinting at retirement). There are also decisions to be made about free agents Wally Szczerbiak and Joe Smith.

Everyone is sure to offer an opinion on what the Cavs will need to do in order to win a title/keep LeBron happy. One rumor floating around now is that the Cavs will sign former Piston cry-baby Rasheed Wallace- [Read more...]

david-stern-smug-as-ever

We can all thank David Stern for keeping this story in the news a week later: “Upon further review, LeBron James’ decision not to shake hands with the Orlando Magic or speak to the media after Game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals is going to cost him. And more than just on the sports talk shows. NBA Commissioner David Stern announced before Game 1 of the NBA finals on Thursday that he had decided to fine James $25,000 for his actions. This was after Stern initially said on Monday that James would not be fined. Stern informed James, who is recovering from surgery to remove a growth from his right jaw, in a phone call on Wednesday” [Brian Windhorst/Plain Dealer]

Cavaliers 111, Bucks 103 (box)

If you’re Richard Jefferson, there really is not much more you can do than shake your head.  After a mediocre first two quarters of shoddy defense and a lack of execution on the offensive end, LeBron James beat the halftime buzzer with a fall-away three point shot.  Typically, these types of conversions are the highlight of any contest – but not this one.

James picked up right where he left off before the half and came out gunning.  In less than three minutes of third quarter play, James tallied 16 points on a barrage of jump shots that would have left any other coach in a tantrum on the sidelines.  But with Mike Brown admittedly a bit uneasy, James sank shots from all over the court, including a three ball from the Bradley Center logo that is placed about 10 feet behind the three-point line.

Trade Machine Fun

A few deals that have been discussed are just not possible on the old Trade Machine. For instance, I figured that the best possible solution for the Cavaliers and Bulls would be for the Cavs to trade Eric Snow to Chicago where he would be a player coach. He’d be on IR all season, and then his contract would expire giving the Bulls cap flexibility the following year. In return the Cavaliers would get Kirk Hinrich, helping with the PG situation here, and paving the way for the Bulls to select hometown favorite Derrick Rose as the PG of the future. The Cavs then use the money they have available to keep Daniel Gibson and dangle Damon Jones’ contract out there and see what bites. Sounds like a great plan right? Well you try working that one out in the trade machine…it can’t be done.

The other move that was discussed around here lately was acquiring Toronto’s Jose Calderon. The trade machine is still set up for this current season, and the ‘sign and trade’ type of deal isn’t available. That also cancelled out any fun ideas I had about trading for Allen Iverson. Here then are the deals that I could get to work. Do I think they are plausible? Eh…maybe.

Trade #1- Trying to get Michael Redd

In this scenario the Cavs get Redd and Charlie Villanueva.
