Box Score: Bulls 95, Cavaliers 85

Well, this was pretty much a standard Cavs vs Bulls game. That makes 10 straight losses to the Bulls and the Cavaliers were never truly in this game.

Cleveland fell behind by 15 early in this one. They did make things interesting a bit midway through the 4th quarter, but the Bulls never really let this one get in doubt and as we’ve seen happen lately, the Cavaliers’ comeback bid was pushed aside down the stretch.

Another double-double from Varejao was nice and Donald Sloan was the surprising points leader with 14 off the bench. But the Cavaliers defense had no answer for Marco Belinelli and Luol Deng.

The Cavaliers Continue to Grind Through Injuries

Is it better to play poorly and win or to play well and lose? The Cleveland Cavaliers (4-14, 13th in the East) have lost quite a few games I’m not sure they deserved to lose this season. The Cavaliers are going through something of an identity crisis at the moment. Or they are a pretty good bad team, or a pretty bad good team?

One of the games they most certainly deserved to lose was the 2nd game of the season against the Chicago Bulls. Tonight the Cavaliers will try to avenge that loss when they host the Bulls (8-8, 4th in the East) at The Q.

The Cavaliers will once again be sans-starting backcourt. PG Kyrie Irving is still out with the finger injury and Dion Waiters is expected to miss this game with an ankle injury. The Bulls know the feeling. They too are missing their starting backcourt as PG Derrick Rose and SG Richard Hamilton are both out as well. [Read more...]

Cleveland Cavaliers Look to Move to 2-0 on the Season

On opening night, the Cleveland Cavaliers gave us all a glimpse of some of the highlights, and just a few of the lowlights, that we can expect to see this season. Friday night, as the Cavaliers host the Chicago Bulls, the question will be about consistency.

Against the Wizards on Tuesday, we what the Cavaliers can be. A persistent team capable of outworking their opponents in the paint with a strong backcourt duo to keep opponents honest. We saw some crisp passing, some good cuts off the ball, and just a fun style of team oriented basketball. [Read more...]

Morosi: Cleveland Indians Scouting Matt Garza

There’s still time before the Major League Baseball trade deadline comes, but that’s not stopping teams from trying to make impact moves prior to the All-Star Break. While there’s no doubt the Cleveland Indians could really use a right handed bat, they’ve already seen potential targets such as Kevin Youkilis and Carlose Lee traded to contenders. Does this mean the Indians might turn their focus instead to bolstering the pitching staff?

Perhaps. According to Fox Sports’ Jon Morosi, the Indians were among a handful of teams scouting the Chicago Cubs’ Matt Garza during his last start.

Morosi would go on to tweet that the Tigers have also had discussions with the Cubs and that the Cubs have been seen scouting the Tigers’ AA team for prospects.

For the season, Garza is 4-7 with a 4.32 ERA with an 86/29 K/BB ratio.

Indians Weekend Wrapup: Injuries, More Injuries, The Chiz, and What To Do About U

Ubaldo'h Jimenez

We have now passed the Memorial Day checkpoint, and your Cleveland Indians (27-21) are still in first place by the narrowest of margins. The red hot Chicago White Sox pounded the Tribe into submission over the weekend and moved themselves just a half game back at 27-22. The onslaught was stunning to say the least, considering the fact that the Indians are built to win with their pitching. But that’s what makes baseball such a great game. You just never know how things are got to take shape.

Luckily for our boys in Wahoo red, white, and blue, they won’t see the White Sox again until late September, and they were fortunate enough to return home for a visit from the Kansas City Royals, one of their favorite punching bags.

The long weekend had lots of interesting action both on and off the field. Despite the sweep on the south side of Chicago, the Indians will be just fine. So let us jump right into the weekend that was in Wahooland.

The pitching was lit up during a series for the first time all season, but of course there is only one guy I am concerned about; Ubaldo Jimenez. [Read more...]

Tonight We Say Farewell to the 2011-12 Cleveland Cavaliers

Media Day seems like just last week

The last time the Cleveland Cavaliers played on a Thursday was January 12th, the 3rd week of the season. You see, Thursday nights are typically the big matchup nights. It’s the night TNT has TV rights and other than their premiere games, there’s usually only one or two overflow games.

So it’s fitting, then, that the Cavaliers finish the season on a Thursday night in Chicago, buried underneath the hype and excitement of the NFL Draft. While Browns fans are anxiously greeting the newest members of their team, Cavaliers fans are saying goodbye to their players.

In a season in which the Cavaliers were mostly ignored outside of Cleveland, save for a handful of people who occasionally flipped over on League Pass to see what that Kyrie Irving guy was doing, the season comes to an end much in the same way it started…quiet, unassuming, and with more questions than answers.

Cavaliers Host Bulls as Kyrie Irving Prepares for Derrick Rose

Cavaliers hope to avoid another thrashing from the Bulls

Once again, a point guard matchup will be the focus of all eyes.

Kyrie Irving, #1 pick, Rookie of the Year candidate, and hope of a rebuilding franchise squares off with Derrick Rose, former #1 pick, former Rookie of the Year, and former hope of a rebuilding franchise.

The Cleveland Cavaliers (13-20, 10th in the East) return home to the Q where they will host the Chicago Bulls (29-8, 2nd in the East). The last time these teams played, the Bulls (without Rose) dismantled the Cavaliers. It might take a miracle to avoid that fate once more.

The Cavaliers are slipping. The loss of Anderson Varejao really seems to be catching up to them now, teams seem to be adjusting to Kyrie Irving, the momentum Antawn Jamison seemed to be developing before the All-Star break has gone, and there simply aren’t enough players stepping up right now. Cavaliers’ Schedule Gets Tougher With Chicago Bulls In Town

Joakim Noah, Cleveland-hater

The Cleveland Cavaliers (6-7) officially kick off the most brutal part of their schedule Friday night when they host the Eastern Conference leading Chicago Bulls (13-3) to the Q.

This game is naturally being billed as the first showdown between Derrick Rose and Kyrie Irving, a pair of young PGs who will be playing a lot of games against each other in the next few years. Of course Rose, the reigning MVP and one of the absolute best players in the game today has a pretty healthy head start on Irving. But it would still be fun to see how Irving matches up with Rose at this early stage in his career.

Unfortunately, we may not get to see that matchup. Rose has been battling a toe injury and will be a game time decision. He did not participate in shootaround this morning, though, and in my opinion it might be a long shot to see him play tonight. [Read more...]

92.3 FM Switching to Sports in Cleveland?

With the failed Digital Sports Network (DSN) so recently in our memories, there is a rumor floating around that 92.3 FM in Cleveland could have its format flipped by CBS radio into a sports talk channel.  There was one thing that DSN taught us for sure and that is that there is demand for choices in Cleveland sports talk.  It seems that there might be one on the horizon according to RadioInsight.com.  According to their site, a web domain has been registered anonymously since march at 923TheFan.com.  Additionally, Radio Insight is sniffing around CBSCleveland.com and Cleveland.CBSLocal.com where there is a locked down WordPress software installation.  But is there any truth to it all?

We did some digging on this just to see what CBS has done in the past.  CBS has started up FM sports stations in markets like Boston, Dallas, Detroit, Washington D.C., Chicago and Pittsburgh.  In Boston CBS is the flagship station for the New England Patriots.  In Dallas CBS is the flagship station for the Dallas Cowboys.  In Detroit they have the Lions.  In Chicago they have the White Sox and in Pittsburgh and D.C. it appears they don’t have any affiliations.  According to sources we talked to, team affiliations are one of the keys to the business plan, particularly with NFL teams.  So, when, exactly are the Browns up for radio contract renewal?

On the Bright Side for the Cleveland Cavaliers, Things Could Always Be Worse

Chin up, Cavs fans. As the Cavaliers head into tonight’s game with the Denver Nuggets, the team is hoping to avoid their 19th straight loss and 29th of their last 30 games, I know many are feeling fatigued with the epic failures of the team this year.

But today is Friday, the weekend is upon us, and it’s time for us to take stock, have a little fun at other teams’ expense, and realize that things could always be worse. You know the stats for this year. You’re surely aware that the Cavaliers are attempting to become the lowest rated team in the NBA in both offensive and defensive efficiency; you know that their average margin of victory is twice as bad as anyone else’s; you know that this offense is 27th in points per game despite being 11th in the NBA in pace, meaning it takes them an inordinate number of possessions to score their pathetic 93.4 ppg. You know this hasn’t always been fun. [Read more...]

………….Um, ok, then. Yesterday I tried to throw some power of positive thinking into the mix, and got rewarded with yet another 20 point beat down. Folks, I don’t know what tell you, but the Cavaliers are the worst team in the NBA right now. This is a team that has had at least an 18 point deficit in 5 straight games (thank you, Milwaukee). This is getting bleak, and I don’t have any answers to offer. I’m at a complete loss over how this has happened. I don’t know where the winners mentality and band of brothers focus went. Did this team quit? Man, I hate using that Q word on those who don’t deserve it, but to my eyes, it really does look like at this moment in time these players have given up on running Byron Scott’s offense and had stopped giving any effort whatsoever on the defensive end. And so my ultimate nightmare is happening. Fan support is already waning, as fans feel justified to give up on the team that appears to have given up on them. It’s a brutal cycle. All I can do is continue to ask fans to take the high road and keep supporting this franchise. Dan Gilbert, Chris Grant, and Byron Scott didn’t do this to the franchise and in my opinion they still deserve the fans’ support. But it’s going to be interesting for sure to see how the fans react to the team tonight in the first home game since the Miami debacle. [Read more...]

Can The Cavaliers Exceed Expected Results in 2010-11?

By now we all know the Cavaliers are going to be a worse basketball team this year. That much is obvious, but what many of us are wondering is, just how much worse will they really be. The common guess I’ve heard repeatedly has been somewhere in the 35 win vicinity. But is there any historical precedent for unexpectedly losing your franchise superstar in the middle of his prime?

Neil Paine points out an interesting case on the Basketball-Reference.com Blog in the form of the 1994 Chicago Bulls. If you recall, in the 1992-93 season, the Bulls won 57 games and took home their 3rd consecutive NBA Championship, and then Michael Jordan walked away from the sport. Everyone expected the Bulls to have a major setback, but in the 1993-94 season, the Bulls still won 55 games, although they fell short of winning a 4th straight Championship.

Is there any chance of the Cleveland Cavaliers repeating this kind of resilient bounce back in 2010-11? [Read more...]

Cavaliers vs Bulls: Round One, Game Four Numbers and Words

For a quarter and a half, watching the Cavaliers take on the Bulls was once again like pulling teeth. Finally, at long last, with 4:52 left in the first half and the Cavaliers trailing 43-40, the team flipped the switch. The defensive intensity rose, the rebounding effort peaked, and even free throws started going in. The Bulls would only make 3 more FGs that half, and the Cavaliers would ride the momentum to a 121-98 statement over the Bulls. What follows is my analysis in numbers and words.

-  Today’s quote comes from former German president Richard von Weizsäcker who once said “Seeking to forget makes exile all the longer; the secret of redemption lies in remembrance.” This pretty much sums up what happened in this game. The prospect of exile from the NBA Playoffs was becoming more real the longer the Cavaliers tried to ignore their problems. In this game, they finally seemed to accept what was happening, and they proactively did something about it. It was refreshing to see as a fan, and I can only imagine the relief Mike Brown must feel as his team finally played a full game and exerted their will on a game. I was extremely critical of the team after Game 3, so I must give them equal credit for the way they played in Game 4.   [Read more...]

Cavaliers vs Bulls: Round One, Game Three Numbers and Words

Albert Einstein defined insanity as doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Right now the Cavaliers are absolutely insane. A lack of urgency and being ok with letting their opponent dictate the style of play caught up to the Cavaliers in this game as the Bulls won 108-106 to get themselves back into the series. What follows is my analysis in numbers and words.

- This game reminded me of the Steven Wright quote “Right now I’m having amnesia and deja vu at the same time.” At this point I’m pretty sure the Cavaliers are incapable of learning lessons and lack the desire needed to win the NBA Championship. And before you think this is a reaction to just one game, I remind you to look back at some of the things we’ve been saying about this team for the last few weeks. The habits they picked up while sleepwalking through March have ingrained themselves into the team’s DNA. The Cavaliers have forgotten who they are and how to give full effort, and they just keep playing this sloppy, lethargic style of basketball game in and game out. We thought it was just effort and a lack of interest in the regular season. I don’t know how to explain this series away. With the exception of the 1st quarter of game one, the Cavs look like an average basketball team at best.  [Read more...]

Cavaliers vs Bulls Round One Game Two Numbers and Words

It certainly wasn’t the kind of game you would draw up when you tried to envision a winning playoff game, but the Cavaliers overcame some lackluster hustle and some quality play from Chicago to escape with a 112-102 victory. What follows is my analysis in Numbers and Words.

-  This is a strange game to break down. If you’re the Bulls, are you encouraged with the way you played in front of a hostile crowd against the #1 seed and almost stole a win, or are you feeling down because you played a pretty solid game and still lost? That’s a question only the Bulls can answer, and we’ll probably find out in Game 3.

-  The first number that stands out in this one is the Bulls’ Assist to Turnover Ratio. The Cavaliers were an average (for them) 24/12, but the Bulls were an astounding 25/4. I think it’s safe to say that’s about as good of a performance as you can get if you’re Vinny Del Negro. The Bulls also manufactured 16 points off the Cavaliers’ 12 turnovers while the only giving up 5 points on their own 4 turnovers.

A tale of two teams. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. Wait a minute, strike that. Reverse it. Whatever the case may be, the Cavaliers have endured their growing pains and early struggles and are starting to put things together. The offense has been moving the ball well again and the defense has started to pick up some intensity as well. Shaq is still somewhat of a work in progress, but we’re beginning to see Delonte West start to look like the player he was last year. 2 games is too small of a sample to be a proper microcosm of a season, but the feeling about this team right now is better, DNP-Gate not withstanding. Tonight, the Cavaliers seek revenge on the Bulls and look to keep the momentum going.   [Read more...]

You have to be proud of the game the Cavaliers played against the Wizards on Tuesday. Admit it, when the Cavs found themselves down 18 points in the first half, none of you really believed they would fight their way back. But that’s exactly what happened. In the end, the Cavaliers walked away with a fairly easy win over the team that loves to hate us so much. People are so quick to criticize Mike Brown when things aren’t going well, but credit belongs to the coach for recognizing the massive size mismatch the Cavs had inside and sticking to it. Credit goes to realizing Boobie Gibson had the hot hand in the 2nd half and he gave him the proper minutes to have a strong affect on the game. Granted, these things should be obvious, but hey, baby steps. So it is that the Cavaliers welcome division rivals Chicago into the Q where the Cavs will try to extend their 3 game win streak. The Bulls come in limping a bit in terms of confidence and performance, and being shorthanded won’t help them much at all either.   [Read more...]

Michael Jordan and the Cleveland Cavaliers – A Labor of Hatred and Love

The Shot

This upcoming weekend, the game of basketball will celebrate the enshrinement of its 50th Hall of Fame class. It’s hard to think of a better way to celebrate turning 50 than by inducting Vivian Stringer, David Robinson, John Stockton, Jerry Sloan, and Michael Jordan into its halls. The Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony is often times a chance for reflection, as these great heroes we grew up watching and either loving or hating look back at their careers and try to put words to what it all meant. It is in that spirit that we look back at what Michael Jordan meant to basketball in the city of Cleveland and try to put words to his influence on the passion many of us feel for the Cavs.

In Cleveland, basketball is hardly the sport of choice. Throughout the state of Ohio, kids are brought up and raised to be football players. For most people throughout our fair state, their hearts are interwoven with the spirit of either The Ohio State Buckeyes or the Cleveland Browns (or, in many cases, both). Sure, the Indians have been around since the creation of the American League over 100 years ago, and there’s a history and legacy there, but the heart of Cleveland has always belonged to the Browns, and it likely will always be that way.    [Read more...]

Despite Rick’s urgent pleas earlier this week, Ben Wallace is still suffering with the flu and will be out for tonight’s game against the Bulls. So once again the shorthanded Cavaliers will have to try to find a way to win on the road without some key players. The Cavaliers and Bulls have split their last 10 matchups right down the middle at 5 a piece. However, the Cavs have had the recent momentum on their side, as they’ve won 3 straight against them. We’ll see if the Cavaliers can make it 4 in a row against their division rivals tonight.  [Read more...]
