10-0 start adds fuel to Buckeyes’ recruiting fire

Doug Lesmerises of The Cleveland Plain Dealer chimes in this Sunday morning on the latest from Urban Meyer and the Buckeye recruiting trail.

“At 10-0 — now one of just four unbeaten teams in the nation after losses Saturday by Alabama and Louisville — with 17 oral commitments and a 2013 class currently ranked No. 6 in the nation by ESPN and No. 7 by Rivals,” writes Lesmerises, “it’s not a bad time to be selling the Buckeyes. Or as Meyer said on his radio show last week, ‘Ohio State is kind of hot right now.’”

The Buckeyes, per Lesmerises, presently have 76 active scholarship players, with 13 seniors leaving after the season. With an 82-scholarship limit thanks to Jim Tressel-based NCAA sanctions, this means 19 slots will be open.

“And while Ohio State is spreading its message around the country after a year of transition,” Lesmerises continues, “the Buckeyes are still playing to the interested parties at home as well. Of the 17 oral commitments, seven are from Ohio.”

Ohio State Recruiting: Urban Meyer Responds To Allegations Of Improper Tactics, Vows To Be ‘Relentless’

On Friday, Ohio State Athletic Director Gene Smith responded to comments made by Bret Bielema and the Michigan State staff this week about Urban Meyer’s recruiting. Later, Meyer himself issued a statement on the little dust-up provoked by the Wisconsin coach. In that statement, he vowed that he and his staff will be “relentless” on the recruiting trail.

“We had an opportunity to discuss a number of issues with each other and conference staff, including those that have arisen this week. It should be noted that my coaching staff is in full compliance with our recruiting efforts, and no one on this staff did anything illegal or unethical. We will continue to comply with NCAA rules and recruit with relentless effort, especially the great state of Ohio. I want to thank (Big Ten commissioner Jim) Delany for his insight and leadership, and at this point we all look forward to moving past this week and getting ready for the start of spring football.

You’ve got a responsibility to your home state. Absolutely. There is not a coach in America who’s not going to do that, not going to check on his own state.”

SportsLine Spreading Innuendo Again

Gregg DoyelNational Media Continues To Create Stories From Lies

Perhaps you’re familiar with Gregg Doyel, perhaps you’re not. Either way, I am playing right into his hand. He’s little more than SportsLine’s version of Howard Stern…a shock jock with a laptop. He falls into this continuing trend that I find disturbing. What trend? The trend of the national sports media outlets making up fabricated stories, spreading lies, breaking news without valid sources, and on and on and on. And why do they do it? Because they can. Because who’s going to stop them? Because bloggers like myself write about them and give them the attention they desire. Because readers flock to them and take their word as gospel truth.

So what exactly am I talking about here? I’m talking about Gregg Doyel’s latest bargain bin joke of an “article” for SportsLine. In it, he starts by taking hollow shots at coaches for their “slimy” recruiting practices….even though he doesn’t feel the need to elaborate on exactly what practices he is speaking out against, [Read more...]

Pryor Trusts Brewster

Stumbled upon this video this morning. Again, he doesn’t talk about Oregon at all and he doesn’t have much to say about Michigan. At this point, I’m still comfortable proclaiming this a 2 team race between OSU and PSU.
