Browns Officially Sign Center Alex Mack

The Akron Beacon Journal is reporting that the Browns have officially signed first-round draft choice Alex Mack to a five-year contract.  The guaranteed figure is in the $12 million range – less than half of what the Jets were forced to pay Mark Sanchez.

Mack will join fellow signed rookies James Davis, Don Carey, Kaluka Maiava and Coye Francies in minicamp as they await the veterans to arrive at the end of the month.  In the credit where credit is due department, we would be remiss if we didn’t count this as a minor victory for the Kokinis/Mangini staff during their first year.  Now, let’s get those second-rounders signed, as the wide receiver situation is definitely one that needs to be decided come the start of the season.

(Update:  Earlier reported numbers have been now updated to reflect a guaranteed sum of approximately $9 million)

More Cribbs on Sunday?

This team never stops amazing me.  Just not too much in the good way.  Why is it that it takes a huge play from someone that should have been on the field more to begin with for the coaches to finally say, “Hey, this guy may actually be pretty good!”

In the case of Jerome Harrison, I have a feeling that even his 11-plus yards per touch will still find him on the bench in key situations.  But in the case of Josh Cribbs, it only took 12 weeks for some play-callers to wake up and smell the coffee.

Boobie Gibson, Scoring Points

Apparently, there has been some back office uproar amongst the agents of NBA players.  There is no denying that this past off season has been near stellar for Danny Ferry.  Stellar would have been if Chris Paul was a Cavalier.  What can I say, I’m a tough customer.  But one signing that made it near stellar was the contract that was agreed to by Daniel Gibson.  While we think it is a solid deal for Danny Ferry and the Cavaliers, said agents are on the other side of the fence.

Agents thought the Cavs took advantage of the father-and-son duo at the negotiating table. Many thought Gibson could have gotten more money had he been represented by a savvy, veteran agent. Gibson was a restricted free agent and there was little — if any — talking done with other teams.

Grady Sizemore: 100/100

Grady Sizemore - 100 HR, 100 SB

If you can bring yourself to ignoring the fact that the Tribe has dropped nine straight, it should be mentioned that Grady Sizemore stole his 100th base of the season his career in last night’s loss.  Coupling this with his home run on July 5, Sizemore is now officially the second player in the history of the team to eclipse the 100/100 mark.

And as laid out here, Grady is under wraps until 2012.  It can get excruciating to watch an entire team for only one or two guys, but it may have to be the case this season.  Oh, and if you had not heard, Sizemore will be partaking in this year’s Home Run Derby.  Let’s just hope he doesn’t go all Abreu
