Browns Undrafted Free Agency Signings and Rumors

Now this is one of the places where Twitter is really useful. Last night the floodgates were opened so that NFL undrafted free agents were allowed to negotiate with teams. Or is it the other way around? Either way, as these guys, who had been in limbo since the draft ended, started to have their phones ring they and their friends were tweeting about where they were going.  Luckily for everyone, a New England Patriots draft blog – nepatriotsdraft.com – was reporting and consolidating information from basically everywhere into a list.  So, who did the Browns reportedly get?

Carl Gettis – Cornerback – Missouri – (@CG_AKA_P_CHULO) Gettis is a four-year player from Missouri.  He is 5’10″ at nearly 200 pounds.  He came into college as a running back before switching to corner.  Not that it means a whole lot, but his most famous highlight has him playing press coverage against Illinois before making a one-handed interception.

Reasons why Mike Brown’s stock is rising without ever coaching a game this year – So. Beach developments help: “But this isn’t a diatribe about LeBron or Coach Spo.  It’s simply a commentary on a ex-Cleveland Cavaliers Coach, and embraced memeber of the Cleveland community, that I think did a much better job all around than anybody ever gave him credit for.  Until now maybe, because I have a feeling that he will be the most coveted coach in the NBA carousel this off-season.” [Bowers/Stepien Rules] [Read more...]

Continued perspectives on the Bernie Kosar rumors with several other NFL teams, and what the Browns should do next: “Now, merely hiring Kosar as a greeter, even a well-paid one, or as some other figurehead position haphazardly created for fan service purposes is not going to do it (See Brown, Jim).” [Doug/Cleveland Sports Torture]

I know this was on my mind as soon as this news broke: “With Jeff Fisher parting ways with the Tennessee Titans earlier this week, there is no doubt that a number of Browns fans were playing the ‘what if’ game.” [Steve DiMatteo/Dawg Pound Daily] [Read more...]

Even more so with Andy shelved- “This is not a short term rebuild for this club. It is a fate that Gilbert and the club’s fans did not deserve but they have to deal with it. Even after they drafted James in 2003 the team did not make the NBA Playoffs until his third season. It’s just a matter of finding out what you currently have and what is the best way to supplement that core. That is the true mission for the rest of this campaign.” [Jeff Sack/Cavaliers Gab] [Read more...]

While We’re Waiting… Trade Exceptions, Vizquel’s Hall of Fame Odds, 2011 Big Ten

Forecasting what might happen with those fancy trade exceptions this season: “Most years the NBA trade season is defined by the term ‘expiring contracts.’ This season, however, there’s a different phrase that might be at the center of big-name transactions: trade exceptions.

Trade exceptions can be created several ways, but large ones typically are created when a team acquires salary-cap space in exchange for trading a player. The team that receives the cap space then gets a credit — of the amount of the departing player’s salary in the current year of his deal or the first year of a new deal — that it can use in future transactions for a calendar year.” [Brian Windhorst/ESPN.com]

Buckeyes 38, Hoosiers 10: The New No. 1

It was easy, it was harmless and it’s been quite the ride so far. And with yet another blowout victory, the Ohio State Buckeyes took control of their own destiny in 2010 by moving to the No. 1 spot in the nation.

Quarterback Terrelle Pryor had a career game passing the football after being partially limited with a quad injury, limiting his mobility. The junior responded with the best numbers of his career through the air, completing 24 of 30 passes for 334 yards and three touchdowns.

Utilizing this newfound big play offense, the Bucks easily rolled over the Indiana Hoosiers 38-10 at Ohio Stadium. Yes, this was the same Indiana team that threw for nearly 500 yards in a close loss to Michigan a week ago, but we all know much more about that Wolverines team now. Coupled with a loss by outgoing No. 1 Alabama at South Carolina last night, this now puts OSU in the driver’s seat for taking over the top ranking in the land.

Buckeye 12 Pack- Eastern Michigan Edition

Saturday the Buckeyes beat the Eastern Michigan Eagles 73-20. Here are the 12 talking points I took away from the game.

No. 1- The first takeaway is a solid win with no injuries. That is the most important thing every week, and this one is no different. The Big Ten season opens next week, and we’ll need all hands on deck.

No. 2- Big week for Dane Sanzenbacher. 9 catches for 108 yards and a career high 4 TDs. Loved his crossing routes. Also loved his blocking in this one. Take a look at Herron’s TD run. Sanzenbacher had his man blocked to the back of the end zone. Wideouts blocking defensive backs means the difference between 5 yard gains and long runs. [Read more...]

Is the “Wildcat” Heading to Columbus?

Terrelle Pryor - Ohio St Michigan St FootballNo pocket-passing quarterback.

No big, between-the-tackles running back.

No problem?

At least if you ask Jim Tressel, who appears to be eying up some new possibilities for his Buckeye offense come the start of the 2009 season.

Although Tressel didn’t come right out and say as much during his trip through Canton last week, it isn’t hard to picture Terrelle Pryor running some variation of a Wildcat offense or even more work with the pistol formation.

Tressel seemed smitten when talk of the Wildcat offense came up during a visit with Hoover High School head coach Don Hertler Jr.

But I thought Terrelle Pryor believes he’s a throw-first quarterback?  Hmm.

Cavaliers Rout Celtics, Win 19 Straight at Home

Cavaliers CelticsCavaliers 98, Celtics 83 (box)

There is not much that I can say that can not be derived from reading last night’s Live Blog.  A quick summary: Cavs came out blazing with an absolutely monstrous first quarter.  Typically if you allow your opponents to score 20-plus points out of the gate, you could be in some trouble – unless you put up over 30.  The lead carried into halftime, despite a rough patch of play when LeBron James was on the bench.  But the second half was all Cavaliers as Cleveland outscored Boston by three in each of the two frames, barraging the Celtics with layups, dunks, jumpers and the occasional three-pointer.

Oh yes, and we did this all without our would-be All-Star big man, Zydrunas Ilguaskas.

Looking For Weakness…

The Buckeyes are loaded. We know it. Michigan knows it. The media knows it. SEC fan knows it, but won’t admit it. There really isn’t much use for breaking out the traditional preview. You know about Beanie Wells. You’ve seen James Laurinaitis on First Take. You’ve heard Jim Tressel talk about phenom Terrelle Pryor. You know that the team retained 20 starters from last season. You know Malcom Jenkins and Alex Boone were honored with Laurinaitis and Wells on many preseason all-American teams. You know the Buckeyes are favored to win their third straight outright Big Ten title (which would be a first for any team in the conference.) What you may not know is what could be Ohio State’s undoing this year. What weaknesses could bring down the Scarlet and Gray?

Keep in mind that if the Buckeyes beat USC on September 13th, I firmly believe they should finish the season undefeated. But what could go wrong? Where might a team be able to find a soft spot in the Buckeye armor? Let’s take a look-

The Pass Rush-

Ohio State retained almost all of the class of ’08. Almost. [Read more...]
