While We’re Waiting…Indians Bullpen Improving, Assessing Tom Heckert’s Work, Slimmed Down Samardo Impressing

Bullpen rounding into form for the second half? “Now, it seems the pen is at least close to getting back to full strength and may not be something to worry about by July 31. That would be big for Cleveland to be able to focus on just the bat and/or starter in a trade.

It’s also big for Cleveland because the team is totally different with the bullpen going strong. The Tribe has the ability to pull out close games, late. If the middle reliever can keep a game close, the late-inning guys are a safe bet to do the same. Now, instead of seeing blowouts, you’ll have your Indians with a shot to win down the stretch of a lot of contests.

The bullpen is on the right track toward regaining its dominance of 2011. If it can get there, look out.” [Craig Gifford/DidTheTribeWinLastNight?]

While We’re Waiting…Trading Colt McCoy, Tribe AL Central Favorites, Trent Richardson’s Impact

While We’re Waiting serves as the early morning gathering of WFNY-esque information for your viewing pleasure. Have something you think we should see? Send it to our tips email at tips@waitingfornextyear.com.

New book, Trading Up Colt: “The Browns leapt into ‘win now mode’ by drafting the 28-year-old Weeden in the first round. The question is not whether McCoy wins the starting job, but whether he will even be on the Browns roster when the season starts. The Browns may have already tried to trade him, and in my opinion, the decision to give McCoy the first team reps at the only OTA session open to the media was a ploy to rebuild his trade value.

McCoy is a swell guy. I’d be happy if he was the Browns backup next year and I think he’d see the field. But relations between him and Berea appear stained and I’d be even happier for him if he got a fresh start someplace else. Here are five teams that I think would make a good fit…” [Jimmy Weinland/Dawg Pound Daily]

Cavs Offbeat: Manny Harris Gets the Call

Corperryale L’Adorable Harris (you can call him “Manny”) arrived to Quicken Loans Arena on Wednesday night unsure of what the future would have in store.  Typically, Harris would get to the arena well before tip-off, grab his designer suit and help support the 12 active members of the Cavaliers.

But on a night filled with question marks in terms of potential lineup changes, Harris not only found himself among the active participants, but he was the first man Byron Scott went to off of the bench to help compliment his smaller lineup.  The end result was 21 minutes of playing time, six points (both on three-pointers), two rebounds, two assists, two steals and a happy head coach.

“I thought Manny played extremely well,” said Byron Scott of his rookie guard. “He gave us exactly what we wanted.  He was real good on the defensive end and getting after people, he took shots when he had them and didn’t really force anything.”

Danny Green Officially Waived by the Cavaliers, Manny Harris To Take His Spot

Danny Green is now a former Cavalier. Scott wrote yesterday that this would happen, and now it’s official. After the preseason game last night against the Philadelphia 76ers, a game in which neither Green nor Manny Harris played, the Cavaliers waived Danny Green and thus ended the former 2nd round pick’s tenure in Cleveland.

Last season as a rookie, Danny Green was perhaps more well known in Cleveland for his dance moves than his play on the court, but never the less when given the occasional chance to play, Green tended to make the most of it and play fairly well for a 2nd round pick. He at least showed enough promise that the Cavaliers were believed to be excited about his development coming into this season. [Read more...]

Source: Manny Harris to Nab Cavs’ 15th Roster Spot

Chris Grant may not have had any draft selections at his disposal this past spring, but the 2010-11 Cleveland Cavaliers will likely head into the regular season with three rookies on their 15-man roster.

Joining the athletic Christian Eyenga and undrafted Samardo Samuels will reportedly be another undrafted rookie in Manny Harris who, as a league source tells WFNY, has all but locked up the 15th roster spot on the Cavs, edging out last season’s second-round draft pick Danny Green.

Harris, out of Michigan, has earned the praise of new head coach Byron Scott through much of the preseason due to his work ethic on the defensive end and his scorers mentality with the ball in his hands.  While he may not be the most talented member of the backcourt, Scott allegedly appreciates Harris’ willingness to drive to the rim – most notably seen in his crunch-time barrage of scoring against Dallas last week.

Woods out, Green and Harris battle for final roster spot

It’s a long held principle of successful basketball that the man required to protect the paint and intimidate opposing penetrators cannot be named Loren.  Thus, Loren Woods got the ax yesterday as the Cavaliers round out their roster as the season rapidly approaches.  Woods had been out of the league for the past few years and was not expected to make the final roster.  He made little impact in  preseason camp and saw limited action in only one game.  It was only a matter of time before the Cavaliers released him.

The roster is now down to 16 and only one more cut remains before the Cavs will have their roster set for the 2010-11 campaign.  It appears that this final spot will be filled by either Danny Green or Manny Harris.  Green has seen limited action this preseason while Harris has flourished under Byron Scott and his uptempo style.  Harris is averaging 10.5 points in about 20 minutes per game this season.  He has looked solid over the past week against both Dallas and San Antonio and provides enough range from outside that he would appear to be a legitimate option when the games actually start to matter during the regular season.

Cavs Pound “Spurs” in Pre-Season “Home” Game

Last night the Cavaliers went on the road to Pittsburgh for a home pre-season game against the San Antonio Spurs.  Only problem was that the Spurs didn’t really show up to play.  The Cavaliers ended up dominating the final score 106-80, but they did it against a Spurs team without Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili or Richard Jefferson.  None of the four was even traveling with the team.

JJ Hickson, Booby Gibson, Ramon Sessions and Manny Harris led the way in terms of scoring for the Cavaliers.  Hickson was especially impressive with 18 points and 9 rebounds in 27 minutes of action.

The further we get into this new Cavs team, the stranger it seems after watching Mike Brown’s teams.  Undersized players like Sessions and Gibson getting a chance to play?  Who would have thunk it.  And J.J. Hickson is finally becoming the player that we all feared Mike Brown would never allow him to become due to general inactivity. [Read more...]

Cavs Part Ways With Jackson, Mitchell; Roster Stands at 17

One of last year’s feel-good stories officially came to an end on Wednesday as the Cavaliers have waived former Cleveland State point guard Cedric Jackson along with forward Tasmin Mitchell.

The two players combined for six minutes during the preseason, signaling that the end was near as the team creeps towards their October 27th opener against the Boston Celtics.  The roster, however, currently stands at 17 players – a number that has to be reduced to 15 by 6 PM on October 25th.

Cavaliers Waiting on Jawad Williams as Training Camp Approaches

Don’t look now, basketball fans, but the Cleveland Cavaliers open training camp in just a couple weeks. In fact, for those of you who follow the Cavs players on Twitter, you may have noticed that several players are already in town and working out at Cleveland Clinic Courts. The air is beginning to cool, the leaves are turning, football is on TV, and basketball will finally be here before we know it. This is one of the most exciting times of the year.

For the Cavaliers, before they can head into camp, there is still one unanswered question that is lingering. Will Jawad Williams be a part of this team in 2010-11? The restricted free agent small forward has yet to accept the qualifying offer the Cavaliers on the table for him, and time is running out for him to make up his mind on what he wants to do. Cavaliers Saw What They Needed To See In Summer League

The Las Vegas Summer League has come and gone already, and now we head to the dog days of summer. There are still a few free agents left that need to be signed, and there will still probably be a few more trades completed, but for the most part, the offseason frenzy is over and we’re about to enter a relative quiet period until training camp.

For the most part, the Cavaliers had a pretty good Summer League experience. They got to take a look at some prospects as well as see the development of some of their own players, all while implementing Byron Scott’s new system and showing some of the ways the system can be successful in putting pressure on opposing teams defenses.

Last week, when I wrote a Summer League preview, I isolated three things I was looking for. Now that Summer League is over we can look back at what we learned. [Read more...]

Pooh Jeter Emerging As Potential Cavaliers Roster Signing

The Cleveland Cavaliers will not be a good team this season. Whether they rebuild immediately or not, the team will clearly not be a championship contender in 2010-2011 and will be a fringe playoff team at best. In the meanwhile however, interesting story lines are developing with the summer league team in Las Vegas.

One of the best is the surprise of point guard Pooh Jeter, who nailed an impressive three-pointer with only 6.9 seconds remaining to give undefeated Cleveland an 81-80 victory over the Chicago Bulls Friday night. Jeter finished with 20 points, seven assists and only two turnovers in the contest, continuing a solid stretch of play in three games played for the Cavs team.

It’s been a work in progress implementing Byron Scott’s fast-paced offense, but Jeter might be developing as the best non-roster prospect out there. The 26-year-old out of University of Portland could add some depth to the back court especially in the case of a trade.

Byron Scott Says Antawn Jamison’s Role is Undefined

Once thought to be the missing piece of a championship contender, forward Antawn Jamison could be looking at a role off of the bench with the 2010-11 Cleveland Cavaliers.  Newly hired head coach Byron Scott spoke with NBATV’s Rick Kamla during Tuesday’s opening game of the Cavaliers Las Vegas Summer League, and it sounds like the 33-year-old Jamison may be featured as a sixth man for the third time in his 13-year career.

Cavaliers’ Summer League Team Ready to Begin Action in Las Vegas

I’d like to tell you that all the LeBron stuff is behind us and that I’ll never write about him again, but realistically, that’s just not true. There’s bound to be more talk over what all happened this month in future weeks. For today, though, I offer a pleasant distraction from the madness: Cavalier Basketball!

Ok, so it’s not the regular Cavaliers team, but Summer League can be fun to watch as guys fight for spots on teams and for training camp invitations. The Cavaliers get under way tomorrow in Las Vegas, and they, too, have some interesting things to watch for.

First off, here’s a look at their official Summer League roster: [Read more...]

Cavaliers Face Tough Choice on March 22

Darnell Jackson report card.001On March 22, the Cavaliers and Zydrunas Ilgauskas’ agent Herb Rudoy will begin working on a contract to bring Z back home to Cleveland. As most of you are probably aware of right now, this means the Cavaliers will have to cut someone to make room for him. You see, the Cavaliers already had a full roster when they traded for Antawn Jamison and Sebastian Telfair and let Cedric Jackson’s 10 day contract expire. Now that Z is coming back, that means the Cavaliers got Jamison and Telfair for absolutely nothing. The only thing it costs the Cavs now are draft picks that mean nothing to them and one roster spot.

By all accounts, the player who will be cut will be either 2nd year PF Darnell Jackson or rookie SG Danny Green. Mostly, it comes down to the fact that they are the 2 players who play the least minutes and have unguaranteed contracts. I think most fans would like to see the Cavaliers reward Jackson and Green for their dutiful way of showing up every night, ready to play if called upon. In doing so, I’d imagine most would like to see Telfair be the one to get cut. However, Telfair has a $2.7 million player option for next season, and he wouldn’t be able to get a fraction of that as a free agent. So giving him a buyout just isn’t an option for Cleveland, unless they want to give him the full $2.7 million up front. Cutting Green or Jackson will cost them nothing, so it’s easy to see why they will likely cut one of them. [Read more...]

Cavalier Notes: D-Block and Danny Green Sent to Erie

jerseycavs-copyIt was little more than a blip on the news wire. The Cavs have assigned Darnell Jackson and Danny Green to the Erie BayHawks of the Developmental League. I’m pretty sure you won’t see anything about this on Sportscenter today. One day after Mike Brown shortened his bench figuratively, he went ahead and shortened it literally. Does this move mean anything more than a little extra space next to Daniel Gibson and Jawad Williams ?

We know this for certain- if Zydrunas Ilgauskas chooses to come back to Cleveland, the Cavs will have to release a player from the 15 man roster. While most of Cleveland would rather see Sebastian Telfair go (Remember him? He’s the other player in the Jamison trade.) his contract will not allow that to happen. (He has a guaranteed deal for next year.) He is still injured, but counts against the roster total. [Read more...]

Grading The Cavaliers: Danny Green

Jawad WilliamsWhile the Cavaliers use the All-Star break to rest up (well most of them anyways) we thought it would be a good time to reflect on the season so far, and issue some grades. In addition, we will detail what the Cavaliers will need from each player in order to hoist some team hardware this summer. Next up? Danny Green

Ok, full disclosure up front: I’m trying to remember more than two or three games that I’ve actually gotten to watch in which Danny Green has played. In fact, he’s only seen time in 13 games thus far this season, so when looking at his relevant stats that must be taken into account. And unlike Andrew’s professed UNC love from his Jawad Williams report card, I am an unabashed hater of UNC, so Green gets no favors in that regard. But, considering the little amount of playing time, none of that really matters in grading him out.

NBA Trade Rumors: Crazy Night Brings Amar’e Stoudemire Closer to Cleveland

Amare StoudemireMonday night February 15th was quite the evening for everyone to give their take on the NBA trade front. I honestly do not know how much more trade talk I can take. From the Corey Maggette conversation yesterday to the supposed deal with the Pacers for Troy Murphy and now back to Amar’e Stoudemire, the talks are as chaotic as ever right now.

For our loyal readers and everyone else out there, this post will serve as a recap of where we are right now and what we learned last night. We had well-regarded journalists directly contradicting their peers, fishy as well as phenomenal usage of the Twitter medium and finally, overall confusion for everyone. Without any more introductory prose, here is what happened specifically last night in chronological order: [Read more...]

LeBron has MVP showing in 100-99 win over OKC

Thunder CavsThe Cavs were missing their first and second string PG, missed 20 of 40 free throw attempts,  and had 17 turnovers yet they somehow managed to improve to 26-1 when scoring 100 points in a game with a victory over the OKC Thunder.  LeBron was magnificent and carried the depleted roster in a vintage LBJ MVP performance.  He absolutely dominated the last minute of each half which buoyed the Cavaliers to victory.  At the end of the first half, he hustled down with about 35 seconds to play and hit a three to force a 2-for-1 exchange giving the Cavaliers the final shot – where he promptly drilled another 3 pointer to end the half.  A 7 point lead was immediately extended to 13 on the perfectly executed 2-for-1.  It was a crucial exchange as the Cavaliers came out asleep in the 3rd, giving up an inexcusable 35 points in the quarter which  in turn gave the Thunder a 1 point lead heading into the 4th.

Kevin Durant matched James for much of the second half and finished with 34 and 10.  The final minute of the game, however, belonged to the reigning MVP who willed the undermanned Cavs to victory.  As the Cavs gagged on free throw attempt after attempt, they found themselves down 1 with 35 seconds to go.  Lebron grabbed a rebound off a Russell Westbrook miss and immediately raced down to the offensive end looking to score a quick bucket without calling timeout.  With all 5 Thunder defenders focused on James, LeBron found Boobie Gibson who was wide open in transition.  Boobie, who had a largely ineffective game as the new starting PG, stepped up and hit the clutch three to give the Cavs a two point lead. OKC isolated Durant on the other end to try and tie the game.  KD drove to his left and got to the block only to be denied on highlight rejection by LeBron.  James was fouled and sank the icing 2 FTs for the win.  While James, who was one rebound away from a triple-double, and Durant were incredible throughout the game, those closing minutes of the first half and the game are what sealed the W and boost his MVP credentials.

Cavs Scrimmage Notes: Delonte West Held Out

The Cavaliers held their annual Wine & Gold intra-squad scrimmage game today at the James A. Rhodes Arena in Akron. The event, which traditionally kick starts the preseason for the Cavs, was filled with news today yet again as Delonte West and Shaquille O’Neal both made the news headlines. Playing at the JAR, the home court of the Akron Zips as well as the former alternative home court for LBJ’s St. V-M Irish back in high school, it was sold out to a maximum crowd of 5,000 with many waiting at the line for tickets as early as 8:00 a.m. this morning.

On to the news information, West has held out of the scrimmage today despite showing up to team practices Thursday. The troubled guard, who may face legal trouble and/or suspension from the NBA, missed the first few practices at the start of training camp. He was supposedly held out due to the ever-cautious hand of GM Danny Ferry.
