NBA News: Mavericks suspend guard Delonte West

Allegedly stemming from an “outburst in the locker room,” the Dallas Mavericks have reportedly suspended former Cavalier guard Delonte West for conduct detrimental to the team.

West, as Cavalier fans may recall, was given an excused absence from the team following a preseason locker room outburst back in 2009. He has had a long-running history of mental illness, and was arrested on weapons charges around the same timeframe, ultimately being suspended for 10 games.

West tweeted later on Monday: “Sorry moma…” and “I showed off on ur birthday again…”

The Mavericks have not said when the eight-year veteran will be back with the team.

Video: Delonte West Gives a “Wet Willie,” Gets a Technical Foul

Following a bizarre stretch of play that involved an unprovoked swing of the arm from Delonte West in the vicinity of Utah Jazz forward Gordon Hayward, the former Cavalier shooting guard was handed a technical foul for the only “wet willie” administered in recent in-game NBA history.

The referees missed the moist poke of the ear, but later conferred over video replay to hand West the technical foul. West, who later joked that he was merely attempting to get some lint out of the Butler product’s ear, said that the move was a “battlefield” moment.

“We’re two warriors, man, we’re out there battling on the battlefield,” said West. “I forgot, the NBA is a gentleman’s game so we’ve got to fight and scrap and do it nicely. Everything is left on the court, though. That’s what it is.

“I wasn’t frustrated. Like I said, you get caught up in the game, in the motion, it’s physical and you just get caught in the moment some times,” West said. “But like I say, you leave things where they’re at and you get on to the next play.”

When a reporter allegedly asked if the move could be dubbed a “West Willie,” the Mavericks guard reportedly couldn’t back from cracking a smile.

Delonte West Offers Delonte West-like Quotes at Dallas Zoo

Former Cleveland Cavaliers guard and fan favorite Delonte West was the recent subject of a trip to the Dallas zoo.  West, along with teammate Lamar Odom, sat with area students during a 30-minute program in which zoo specialists brought out various animals such as penguins, alligators and a boa constrictor.

The highlight, per usual, was the on-the-record discussion with the eccentric West.

West seemed to thoroughly enjoy his first visit to the Dallas Zoo. His right hand was free of a bandage. The ring finger he gruesomely fractured Feb. 15 and needed surgery on a few days later remains a bit swollen and stiff, but he was more than ready to interact with the students and, well, the animals for that matter.

“Well, I think they noticed as soon as I came into the zoo my natural animal instinct, you know what I mean?” Delonte said, speaking of the actual animals. “I got a chance to eat with the lions, you know? They had Lamar playing with the penguins, but they needed me for the more animalistic-type of things, carnivore-type of things. So, I also had a chance to give birth to a baby cheetah today and I’m just overwhelmed with the experience to be amongst my own and my peers.”

[...]

West, who grew up in Washington D.C., was asked if he spent much time at the zoo as a youngster.

“I just ran out in the woods, whatever I could find take it home as a pet,” West said, again stretching the boundaries of fact into pure fiction. “I had a pet raccoon once. No, I took my few field trips to the zoo, but like I said, I think we’re getting ready to go see some of the lions and gorillas, my own kind and hopefully we can have a nice bonding experience and they will accept me as the pack leader.”

Hot sauce is most certainly still in his bag. Literary gold, Delonte West. Literary gold.

Delonte West Expresses Appreciation For Cleveland

The Dallas Mavericks’ visit to the Q last night meant the return of Delonte West. Along with West, the Dallas visit also led to a re-hash of their NBA Finals win over public enemy number one in Cleveland. The former Cavalier guard is talking to the media these days, and expressed his gratitude and appreciation for the Cleveland fans and the Cavalier organization, along with owner Dan Gilbert.

Via Tom Reed of The Plain Dealer:

“I don’t consider them fans, I consider them my friends,” West said. “We had such a close bond. It’s good to see the same faces. And that speaks to what Cleveland sports is about. Even though the things that went on.”

Delonte also talked about his new team, and how it compares to his time in Cleveland.

“It’s just a great atmosphere. Like Cleveland, it’s just another one of those owners [in Mark Cuban] that just gets it.”

As for Dirk Nowitzki, Bill Livingston discussed the warm reception he and the Mavericks received after their NBA Finals win over LeBron James and the Miami Heat. Dirk:

“When you’re caught up in the Finals, you really don’t know about these things…I think this whole city and this whole region were hurt by the way LeBron left.”

More on Delonte West, this time some insight into his condition- “That’s why this most recent episode is so hard to swallow. The messages about West sleeping in the car or in the gym seem to indicate a relapse in his fight with depression. It’s frustrating and hurtful to see because his situation, while unfortunate, is treatable. The obvious rejoinder to West, a multi-million dollar athlete, is “why doesn’t he get a hotel room” or “why doesn’t he rent a house?” Those questions, while relevant, are too easy, and don’t come close to the source of the problem. The correct question is: “why hasn’t he asked for help?”Help. It’s a simple, small word. It’s not hard to say, but to anyone with bipolar, it is damned near impossible to ask for.” [White/HoopSpeak] ALSO CHECK OUT: A Teachable Moment [IGoHardNow] [Read more...]

Former Cavalier Delonte West is un-invited to the White House- “I’m banned from going to the White House, so I’m not going to make it,” West said after tonight’s 96-81 win over the New Orleans Hornets. “But I’m going home to D.C., I’m just not allowed to go to the White House. That’s what happens when you make bad decisions in your life. You can’t go to the White House. I’ve been there 100 times in my lifetime,” said West, who was born in D.C. “I live right around the corner. I live in D.C. It’s going to be ashamed the President isn’t going to get a chance to meet me. I’m the president of my house.” [Dwyer/Ball Don’t Lie] [Read more...]

Jared Sullinger to sit out today’s game: “After demolishing the Dookies on Tuesday night, 85-63, Thad Matta goes for his 300th career victory tonight, in the first ever meeting with UT Pan Am. This game is only available on-line, at btn.com and it will cost you $14.95.

Word came down late yesterday that Jared Sullinger is going to sit this one out due to some back spasms experienced in the Duke game. After the initial hyperventalation when the news broke, it looks like the injury isn’t serious and Sully will be ready in a week at Kansas.

There wasn’t going to be much need for Sully today anyhow. Most of OSU’s cupcakes this season have played at least one tough team to start the season, but UTPA’s toughest games have come against Northwestern, Toledo and DePaul. Their only wins have come against Texas St. and Victory University.” [Eleven Warriors / Corey Carpenter] [Read more...]

Shaquille O’Neal Says LeBron James Was Not Accountable to Mike Brown in Cleveland

When the Cleveland Cavaliers traded for Shaquille O’Neal before the start of the 2009-10 season, it was certainly met with mixed reviews. But whether it was ever really the smartest move or if it was instead a reactionary move meant only to deal with the Orlando Magic, the fact remains that Shaq represented a symbol of hope in Cleveland.

Fans here in Cleveland were smart enough to know that the Cavaliers were not getting THE Shaquille O’Neal. No, they were getting the watered down version. But still, the hope was that pairing Shaq and LeBron would be enough. That it would be just the push the team needed to get over the hump.

Of course that never happened. Instead, Shaq was injured for most of his tenure in Cleveland and the Cavaliers never got a shot at revenge with the Magic, instead flaming out spectacularly against the Boston Celtics in the 2nd round. That was the painful end of the great LeBron James era in Cleveland.

A lot will probably be written in the future about LeBron James. I expect a time will come when books will be written explaining more about The Decision, and LeBron’s meltdown against the Celtics, and other less than scrupulous rumors flying around town. Nothing that scandalous has been written now, but still, Shaquille O’Neal has written a book that gives us our first real look behind the curtain in Cleveland. [Read more...]

NBA Lockout: Stars Taking Over Negotiations?

As the NBA lockout continues and heads to mediation this week, there remains few signs of hope for a season. Chris Sheridan links to a profile of George Cohen, the man who will be mediating this mess. Cohen’s agency, the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service (FMCS) boasts an 86% success rate in mediation. So there is hope.

But as Henry Abbott points out in a revealing post on his TrueHoop site, there may be even less hope than anyone thought. When the NBA cancelled 2 weeks of the season after missing their last deadline, many felt that this would only drive a wedge deeper in the two sides. As it turns out, not only is that true, but it might not even be half the story of what is really going on. [Read more...]

NBA Lockout: Delonte West Finally Lands a Job

Though the alleged run with Home Depot didn’t go as planned, former Cavaliers guard Delonte West has found himself some gainful, stateside employment as a stock boy for Regency Furniture.

The DC-based furniture store will provide West with some time-killing, money-making opportunities – allowing the veteran shooting guard to “stay afloat durin the lockout” –  thanks to his willingnes to work full-time as well as on weekends.  The fact that he’s a local NBA player may have also played a part given the entire top half of his application was not completed.

However, the pièce de résistance of the entire application, which was tweeted out late Wednesday evening and can be seen to the right, were West’s reasoning for being convicted of a crime, a “Misunderstanding,” and his first day of availabilty, “Yesterday.”

NBA Trade Rumors: Celtics Join Bulls in Pursuit of Anthony Parker

Fresh off an 18-point, nine-assist performance, Cleveland Cavaliers guard Anthony Parker is all the buzz in the latest NBA trade rumors.

A crucial contributor in Cleveland’s upset over the Los Angeles Lakers Wednesday night, Parker already had been mentioned over the past few weeks, but potential talks are just starting to heat up now. The latest updates from ESPN.com’s Marc Stein say that the Boston Celtics now are inquiring about the 35-year-old veteran, joining the Chicago Bulls as the leading contender for his services.

The latest rumors speculate that the Cavaliers potentially are demanding a young big man or first round draft picks in any such trade. WFNY’s Andrew covered where Cleveland stands for the future just the other day in his All-Star Break feature, and Scott recently rated Parker as the team’s most likely player to be traded by the deadline on Thursday, Feb. 24. Delonte West Allegedly Fights Teammate During First Week of Season

Following what was described as an “intense game of three-on-three basketball,” two of the newest members of the Boston Celtics reportedly got into a fistfight.

Hoopsworld’s Alex Kennedy reports that following said practice, Von Wafer attempted to walk away from the apparent disagreement but former Cavalier Delonte West followed him into the locker room where he then allegedly threw punches forcing teammates to seperate the two players.  Head coach Doc Rivers (along with veteran players) is reportedly very unhappy with the altercation which could lead to a potential release of West who is on a non-guaranteed contract with the Celtics.

Unfortunately, this news comes shortly after another former member of the Cavaliers, Shaquille O’Neal, stated that he would be able to keep West in control after a season of relative turmoil.

West is currently serving a suspension stemming from a weapons-based arrest in the fall of 2009.

The LeBron Aftermath is Surprisingly Quiet

When LeBron got on TV and took a sledgehammer to the city of Cleveland, wheels started spinning all over the NBA.

First and foremost, Dan Gilbert got busy with the Comic Sans and wrote the fans a letter.  Beat reporter Brian Windhorst scrambled to a broken record theory about the seven stages of grieving after a loss.  Guys like Skip Bayless and Adrian Wojnarowski were basking in a glow of “I told you so” and newfound respect around the city of Cleveland.

One of the more memorable things that was written was Andy Baskin’s blog about how he and the rest of the local media missed the boat on LeBron so badly.  It was a refreshing take from Baskin, and it rang most true out of everything else that had been written up to that point.

A few weeks later, the reporting on LeBron finally started to ramp up.  Wojnarowski unleashed an unbelievable story of LeBron almost getting kicked off of Team USA.  He told us about how Jason Kidd was basically assigned to be LeBron’s babysitter and mentor.  Brian Windhorst followed up with some additional revelations of how the recruitment meetings went with LeBron and his posse leading up to his bolting for Miami.  These two articles alone were exciting.  We might have been burned by LeBron, but at least we might get the closure of finding out exactly what happened in that Boston series, right?  Wrong. Testing out the Ewing Theory with this year’s Cavaliers: “So how will the team actually perform with this huge season on the horizon? Well, as I already mentioned, many experts in the national media have them picked to only win 20 or so games. Brian Windhorst recently added his two cents, claiming that he expects the Cavaliers as is to win between 38-42 games. The Numbers Don’t predictions ranged from 25-38 wins thanks to four different opinions and Smooth’s data analysis projects 35 wins based on WP (wins produced) with this current roster. Needless to say, as is usually the case, local fans and media are noticeably more optimistic than those outside of Cleveland regarding the Cavaliers’ upcoming challenges.” [Numbers Don't]

Eric Mangini ranks among the top five in this ranking from NBC Sports about the the hottest seats in the NFL coaching scene: “Throughout much of the 2009 season, the question regarding Mangini wasn’t if he’d be fired or when he’d be fired, but whether the Browns would try to do it with “cause” and thus cut off his ongoing payments.

His first year in Cleveland had been a disaster, damaged by a string of reports that he was too hard on the players and destroyed by a horrendous win-loss record. But then the Browns caught fire late in the season, and new team president Mike Holmgren apparently decided that giving Mangini at least one more year represented a no-lose proposition.” [Mike Florio]

Delhomme and DA both make the list of worst offseason signings: “The Browns will pay Jake Delhomme $7 million in 2010, a stunning reward for one of the most dramatic falls from grace any quarterback has experienced. Making the move even more puzzling is that, with the exercise of patience and the application of a poker face, the Browns eventually could have gotten Donovan McNabb for the same deal that the Redskins cobbled together in early April — a second-round pick now, and either a third-round or a fourth-round selection next year.  Some Browns fan may defend the move by explaining McNabb is 33, and he could soon enter a decline. Meanwhile, Delhomme is 35, and he’s already skydiving without a parachute.” [Sporting News/Mike Florio]

On Sabathia’s latest quotes of only “knowing three guys” on the current Tribe roster: “To get back on track: there are 12 players still in Cleveland that CC Sabathia played with in 2007, including the men who played directly behind Sabathia in the 2007 playoffs at 2B, SS and CF. Also remaining are the starting DH, the obvious number two and three playoff starters and a reliever that CC watched become, briefly, the best in the world. So when Sabathia looks back and thinks there are only three players left from his era and one of the three he remembers fondly is a player that wasn’t even on the playoff roster in 2007, that CC played with for, at absolute most, a couple months in his career, it pisses me off. At least acknowledge your middle infielders.” [Lets Go Tribe]

Ramon Sessions Signals The Official Start of Rebuilding in Cleveland

So Chris Grant has finally made a move. A real move. Don’t get me wrong, I take no issue with the signings of Samardo Samuels and Christian Eyenga. We’re in a new era of Cavalier basketball and signing developmental players is the new reality in Cleveland. But most of us were still waiting for Chris Grant to go out and make a real proactive move. He tried by signing Kyle Lowry to an offer sheet, but there was no way the Houston Rockets were not going to match it.

Monday night, though, Chris Grant made his first real move as GM of the Cavaliers. He shipped out Delonte West’s partially guaranteed contract and Sebastian Telfair for Ramon Sessions, Ryan Hollins, and a 2013 second round pick.

It’s a nice trade for Cleveland. It feels good to continue stockpiling draft picks after what feels like a decade of wasting picks and throwing them away in bad trades. While Delonte West is still a very good basketball player and a guy who will be missed by most in Cleveland, his being traded was inevitable. So to get a couple useful players in return in Sessions and Hollins was a nice move by Grant. [Read more...]

Breaking News: Cavaliers Trade Delonte West and Sebastian Telfair to Minnesota

Though talks have been rumored for quite some time, the Cavaliers have officially acquired guard Ramon Sessions from the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Joining Sessions on his trip to Cleveland will be center Ryan Hollins and a second-round draft choice in 2013.  Heading to Minnesota in exchange for the pair of players are guards Delonte West and Sebastian Telfair.

West has long been rumored to be on the move after an up-and-down season that featured several missed games and a slight regression in his statistics from the previous year, averaging 8.8 points, 2.8 rebounds and 3.3 assists in 25 minutes per game.  West’s name had been on the trading block since the end of the 2010 playoffs due to his team-friendly contract that only guarantees him $500,000 in the event of a release.  He will also likely serve a suspension stemming from a late-2009 incident resulting in the players arrest on weapons possession.
