While We’re Waiting…Santana Saves Cleveland, New Browns Duds and More Shurmur

If you don’t often join us for weekend coverage (and why not?) we’re happy to be back after a crazy Thursday and Friday in which the site was as blank as Tom Brady’s practice schedule this week. We still don’t know 100% what was to blame, some coding problems and we’re not ruling out our old server hosts as being incompetent. That may be harsh. They may know what they are doing, they just weren’t real interested in helping us get back online. Their loss. Others might blame LeBron, or karma, or even Tony Grossi. I’m just not so sure the conspiracy is real. Moving onward.

Do the hopes of Cleveland sports in 2011 rest on the shoulders of Carlos Santana?- “It is completely unfair to place a heavy burden of expectations on a guy who has just 150 big league at-bats to his name and who is coming off an injury. But Santana’s surgery wasn’t invasive enough to lead to major concern about him being ready for Opening Day, and his premier plate discipline is a skill that carries over considerably well.” [Castrovince/Castro-Turf] [Read more...]

Buckeyes Without WR Depth for Rose Bowl

rose-bowlDo you want the good news or the bad news?  Well, the good news is that the Ohio State Buckeyes will face the Ducks of Oregon with their top two wide receivers, DeVier Posey and Dane Sanzenbacher.  The bad news is that they will have to play the game without Duron Carter and Ray Small.  Carter and Small are both ineligible to play in the game.  Duron Carter apparently hasn’t qualified to play due to academic circumstances.  Ray Small, whose career demands a better metaphor than “dog house,” will miss the game for allegedly violating team rules.  As usual, the blanket phrase was used and we don’t really know what those team rules were that Small broke. Awkward Moments at Work: Cris Carter Style

chrisduroncarterSometimes things get a little strange at the workplace. A little awkward. An employee working out a two-week notice is usually good for some awkward moments. Waiting to hear which employees get laid off would be another. Somewhere sandwiched in there would be the day that Cris Carter had recently.

Try to put yourself in his position. You work as an analyst for ESPN, which of course has hours and hours of programming time to fill, and of course positions itself to try and break every major story. One such story, though certainly not major, made the rounds the other day and had to cause a few tense moments. Ohio State WR Duron Carter was ruled ineligible for the Rose Bowl. Oh, sorry dad. That might make things a bit strange for you huh?

Carter is the Buckeyes’ fourth wide out, and the freshman’s production shouldn’t be too hard to replace. I’m not saying that Carter won’t be a good receiver for the Buckeyes, just that he isn’t a vital part of the offense right now. For the season Carter has 13 receptions for 176 yards. That’s an average of 1 catch and 14 yards per game.

The Buckeyes could potentially lose Rob Rose from the defense, but that hasn’t been confirmed by the university as of yet. There is a chance that Rose is going through the appeals process. As for Carter, looks like he’ll have plenty of time for his favorite hobby- twitter.

While We’re Waiting… Shaq Vs. Big Ben, Promoting WEC, Duron Carter’s Expectations

ben-roethlisberger

When Cleveland’s own Shaquille O’Neal – The Big Field General – squares off against Pittsburgh QB Ben Roethlisberger Tuesday night, I don’t know – or care – what the competition is that will be used to determine the winner.  I have to think that since its Shaq’s show, he has designed a way for him to have a legitimate chance to win, but even if he hasn’t, he better find one.  We need it…real bad.  Because if Shaq doesn’t get this one, it could be a very, very long time before Cleveland has any kind of gridiron success against the Steel City.  And if Big Ben throws his arm out trying to win…that wouldn’t be too bad either.   [Stepien Rules]
