Here’s Your Chance To Tryout For the NBA D-League

When a team loses its star player, it can often be difficult to project how big of an impact the loss will be on the team as a whole. When said star player is LeBron James, you would certainly expect the impact to be catastrophic to the team who lost him.

While some who have closely followed the Cavaliers over the past several seasons  believe that the players who have been left behind can still form a competitive team and be fighting for a playoff spot come April, that optimism is not shared by the general public.

Several national pundits have been forecasting nothing but gloom for the Cavaliers this season. I’ve read more than one person write that the Cavaliers will be among the 2-3 worst teams in the East this season. Betting sites such as Sportsbook.com have the Cavaliers listed dead last with the Pacers, Wizards, Raptors, and Nets at +10,000 to win the Eastern Conference next season. [Read more...]

Cavalier Notes: D-Block and Danny Green Sent to Erie

jerseycavs-copyIt was little more than a blip on the news wire. The Cavs have assigned Darnell Jackson and Danny Green to the Erie BayHawks of the Developmental League. I’m pretty sure you won’t see anything about this on Sportscenter today. One day after Mike Brown shortened his bench figuratively, he went ahead and shortened it literally. Does this move mean anything more than a little extra space next to Daniel Gibson and Jawad Williams ?

We know this for certain- if Zydrunas Ilgauskas chooses to come back to Cleveland, the Cavs will have to release a player from the 15 man roster. While most of Cleveland would rather see Sebastian Telfair go (Remember him? He’s the other player in the Jamison trade.) his contract will not allow that to happen. (He has a guaranteed deal for next year.) He is still injured, but counts against the roster total. [Read more...]

Cavs’ Eyenga Signs Three-Year Deal… In Spain?

Christian EyengaThough unconfirmed at this point, reports are circulating that recent first-round selection Christian Eyenga has inked a three-year deal with the Spanish DKV Joventut – the team most notable for point guard Ricky Rubio.

When Eyenga was drafted, many fans claimed that the selection was for the future.  The plan seemed to be that if the Cavaliers drafted a raw, foreign player, he could stay overseas for the short-term and not be a burden in any way on the team’s salary cap.

Eyenga then suited up for the Cavaliers’ summer league team, and turned a few heads with his very athletic play.  The main argument against the native of Congo was that he had periods where he would look like the best player on the floor, and then follow them up with moments where he looked like he had never played organized basketball before in his life.  The team began to feel that if he could be put on an NBA training program, especially in the weight training area, that he could add muscle and become even more explosive.

Cavaliers Building a Farm System?

Sure, we all know that the Cavs have their very own (okay, shared) team within the D-League.   But typically, this has been a place for the Billy Thomas’ of the world to hang out and chuck up threes.  Now, it appears that Danny Ferry is using this teamto his advantage; placing players on the Bayhawks that will allow for development (so that’s what the “D” stands for).

Cleveland general manager Danny Ferry said when the Cavaliers work out players in preparing for the draft, they ask them how they’d handle numerous situations.

The Future of J.J. Hickson

Going into the most recent NBA Draft, it could be argued that Danny Ferry needed to draft a guy that would be considered more “NBA Ready,” as opposed to banking on pure upside.  When we left the night with J.J. Hickson in tow, many people were left scratching their heads which lead to many posts in a don’t-jump-off-of-the-ledge fashion.

After a superb summer league, that actually found him listed as the top power forward on SI, the fact that I now read this news has me admittedly perplexed. [Read more...]

Rock, Chalk, Cavs?

amd_jackson.jpgWhile other GM’s were burning the midnight oil making trades for OJ Mayo, Kevin Love, Brandon Rush (!), and Mario Chalmers…Danny Ferry was adding a couple of Jayhawks.

Let’s let the press release speak first-

The Cleveland Cavaliers have acquired the draft rights to forward Darnell Jackson from the Miami Heat in exchange for the lower of the Cavaliers two second round picks in the 2009 NBA Draft. In addition, Cleveland purchased the rights to center Sasha Kaun from the Seattle SuperSonics.

Jackson was selected with the 52nd overall pick by the Miami Heat while Kaun was selected with the 56th overall pick by the Seattle Sonics. Both Jackson and Kaun were four-year members of the Jayhawks and helped lead Kansas to the 2008 NCAA Championship and four straight Big 12 regular season titles.
