Losing streak hits seven, Cavs fall to Sixers 97-87

201303291948713355012-p2The Cavs had a pretty good first half. They lead 24-19 after the first quarter and held onto that lead for much of the first half. Tristan Thompson had seven points and Shaun Livingston had eight. But the Cavs failed to score over the final two minutes of the second quarter and  Sixers closed the half on a 9-0 run, tying the game heading into halftime.

That run carried right over into the third.

The Sixers opened the second half on a 13-2 run and the Cavs were playing catch-up for the rest of the evening. Playing catch-up is pretty tough when your team is missing its three best players. It’s extremely tough if you don’t guard Evan Turner.

Turner torched the Cavs for thirteen points in the third period from a variety of spots. Gee, Boobie, CJ Miles, it didn’t matter who checked Turner, no Cavalier could slow him down (his mid-range game was on full display). The former Buckeye finished with a game-high 23 points to go along with his 13 boards. The Villain’s strong third had the Sixers up 77-66 heading into the fourth and the Cavs never got within four points.

CJ Miles scored 19 points off the bench to pace the Cavaliers and Tyler Zeller had a solid, if unspectacular, 14 point and ten rebound evening. Four of the five Cleveland starters scored in double figures (Thompson, Livingston and Ellington each notched ten points) and Luke Walton pitched in a six point, seven board, seven assist evening.

All-Star Jrue Holiday finished with 20-6-5 and Spencer Hawes had 16 points, 11 boards and five assists to lead the Sixers, who improved to 29-43. The Cavs lost season high seventh in a row and fell to 22-49.

“Believe it or not, this has nothing to do with Anderson Varejao, Mo Williams, or Zydrunas Ilgauskas. Without the Global Icon, the Cavaliers will suffer a staggering drop in income. The franchise will immediately lose a quarter or more of its value; projected revenue for the casino that Cavs owner Dan Gilbert plans to build near the arena will sink with it; and any hope of snagging a high-profile free agents or a big-name coach will completely vanish.

That’s the good news. The bad news is, Gilbert’s next-door neighbors, the Cleveland Indians, are in even worse shape at this point, dead last in drawing fans, although they trail the Marlins by only thirty-three fans per home game. The folks that own and run the Tribe have managed to destroy a fan base that not so long ago was every bit as fervent and free-spending as the Cavs’, and the future of the franchise, on and off the field, is dim.” [Scott Raab/Deadspin]

A Cavs-Celtics roundtable which includes our own Jacob: “In the battle of the role players, look for the two-on-two production match between Glen Davis and Marquis Daniels against Anderson Varejao and Delonte West. Big Baby replaced KG well during the playoffs last season. Daniels is expected to get more playing time on LeBron directly, and if he is able to have any success off the bench, it is a huge plus for the Celtics. Andy and Delonte were starters in the past but they represent something Boston can’t match; quickness and hustle. The Cavaliers will need to keep fighting through screens and trying to efficiently push the pace and these two are the key.”  [NumbersDont.com Rountable Chat]

Nothing to fear but… “Basically, my biggest fear about the Playoffs, Free Agency 2010, and LeBron. It’s not losing. We of Cleveland fandom have done it before, in the most heartbreaking ways possible. Nor is it LeBron leaving, win or lose. I’m at peace with that. If it happens, it’s because he wants to live somewhere else, and nothing can stop that. The Cavs organization is first class in every way and the best basketball situation, as well. This fear is not even the Cavs winning the title, and the unsettling loss of identity that will accompany it…” [Brian 23]

Tribe in AL East: “Circling back around to the Tribe… Imagine if the 1994 realignment landed the Wahoos alongside New York and Boston. Imagine how the last 16 years would have turned out. Imagine that same empathetic gaze you cast towards the Orioles, except living inside that desperate and forlorn viewpoint every game of every season as you watched the Indians.  Apparently, that’s exactly what former Indians owner Dick Jacobs wanted. I didn’t know that. Maybe it’s common knowledge, but I can’t find reference to it anywhere.  How close did it come to happening? I’m not sure. Peter Barzilai blogged this morning for USA Today about Jacobs’ hopes of landing in the AL East, and the team of Dan O’Dowd, Mark Shapiro and John Hart that, thank heavens, laid down some common sense.”  [Vince Grzegorek/ '64 & Counting]

Evan Turner Wins AP Player of the Year

In the first of what could be many national awards, Evan Turner was named Player of the Year Friday by the Associated Press. He drove down to Indianapolis, the site of this weekend’s Final Four, with a couple of teammates and the entire OSU coaching staff to accept the fancy trophy.

Out of the 65 votes casted for POY, Turner received 54 while Kentucky’s John Wall came in second place with nine. Luke Harangody of Kentucky and De’Sean Butler of West Virginia each received one vote to close out the rankings. But it was pretty clear in the final weeks of the season that Turner was going to be close to the consensus national player of the year as he led Ohio State to a Big Ten title and a 2-seed in the NCAA Tournament.

The next big story will be whether Turner decides to declare for the NBA Draft soon. The Plain Dealer’s Doug Lesmerises reports that he is set to announce his decision this weekend with his family at his side.

More on LeBron’s scoring title: “I don’t like what I’m hearing. Not from LeBron, who has boldly asserted that he could win the scoring title every year, but from the rest of us. No, it’s not the case that any other player could top LeBron if both gunned all-out, Gervin/Thompson-style, each day of the night. You know why? Because unlike Durant or Melo, James has way more at his disposal. He could work the post, or just run up the court and through all defenders on every possession. Yes, it was a matter-of-fact statement, calm and hardly with the lurch of a braggart. At the same time, LeBron is differentiating himself from his peers. Hey, everybody, he has untapped potential still. He knows it, and if he totally broke out of a team system to go for numbers—which, incidentally, he is less likely to do than anyone on this short-list—amazing thing would happen. We used to know it, and now he’s slipping it in himself. Going after him for it seems a waste of time, but at the same time, there is something chilling about this off-hand press release. Forget at your own peril.” [Bethlehem Shoals/Free Darko]

Buckeyes Fall From Tourney to Wayne Chism’s Headband

Ohio State took their six-man rotation to St. Louis last night to take on the Fightin’ Bruce Pearls in the Sweet Sixteen. From the onset of the game it was apparent that the referees were keeping a tight ship – the kind of thing that does not benefit teams with a short bench. The Buckeyes ended the first half up three points after a back-and-forth period, full of good basketball from both teams.

While the offense was clicking in the first half, the second half saw extremely sloppy offense from the Buckeyes. While some of the bad play can be attributed to the Tennessee press, the real problem for the Bucks on offense was the lack of crisp passing. On a number of occasions (especially down the stretch) the Buckeyes tried lackadaisical drop-off passes while rounding picks. Tennessee’s defenders were effective in taking advantage of the sloppy play by OSU.

“As a collection of assistant coaches and some players ran up and down the floor during a pickup game following Cavaliers practice at Trinity University Thursday, Delonte West relaxed under a basket.

He was charging his cell phone and texting, bouncing his head to music in his headphones while yelling and joking with players in the mildly intense game with heavy trash talking. There was a smile on West’s face as he watched the play.

Back in October, it was hard to predict such a scene. Back in October, it was hard to predict the production that West is now giving the team. It was hard to predict just where he’d be at this point. [...]

The team has constantly protected West, who has declined all interviews since media day in September. There is little or no talk of his ongoing battle with a mood disorder, which West has said is bi-polar disorder. There is no mention of West’s pending court case in Maryland on gun charges. Just a quiet but diligent following of a process that West’s teammates, West’s doctors and West himself follow on a daily basis.” [Brian Windhorst]

OSU Advances to the 2nd Round

It ended around midnight EST but Ohio State officially advanced to the 2nd round with a comfortable win over 15 seed and Big West representative UC-Santa Barbara last night in Milwaukee.  The catalysts for the victory last night were the shooting of Jon Diebler on the offensive end and the activity of Dallas Lauderdale on the defensive end.  National player of the year Evan Turner put his imprint on the game controlling the ball and hitting the glass but he suffered through a 2-13 shooting night.  He finished with 9 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 assists.  The Buckeyes had the luxury of moving forward with a subpar performance from Turner because of the overmatched Gaucho squad.  They advance to face stiffer competition in Georgia Tech on Sunday afternoon.

Could Ohio State Be a #1 Seed?

Evan Turner

In six short weeks, the Ohio State men’s basketball team has gone from an unranked team (uncertain on when its best player would return) to the number 6 team in the country and Big Ten regular season champions.  The Buckeyes are 21-4 with probable national player of the year Evan Turner healthy and in the lineup.  OSU finished its season on Tuesday with a win over Illinois and already clinched the #1 seed in the Big Ten conference tournament which starts a week from today.  But can the Buckeyes clinch a #1 seed in the NCAA tournament?

March Madness: Ohio State Wins Share of Big Ten Title

Ohio State Club Trillion

It was a celebration last night in Columbus and the Trillion Man March was on hand to celebrate.  The Buckeyes pulled away from Illinois in the second half and built up a 16 point lead with just under a minute left.  That was just enough time for the Buckeyes to call a time out to sub out Evan Turner so he could be showered with the about half as much applause as he has earned as a Buckeye this season.  Make no mistake, the home crowd gave him a giant ovation, but it just goes to show how special a year Evan Turner has had as a Buckeye, potentially even being the best player of the year nationally. OSU Beats Michigan & Continues Impressive Play as March Approaches

Evan TurnerOhio State finished off an impressive month of February with a home win over rival Michigan on Saturday afternoon. The Buckeyes are playing their best basketball of the season as the most important month in college basketball approaches. With a number of top 15 teams having lost already or squaring off against each other later today, the Buckeyes can continue a push for a 2 seed and potential placement at the Buffalo 1st-2nd Round site (the only site reasonably close to Cbus). With only one game remaining (home Tuesday vs. Illinois), the Buckeyes needed to take care of business against a below average Michigan team as they head into the Big Ten tournament as the potential favorite after this week’s season ending injury to Purdue’s Robbie Hummel.

On LeBron’s pre-game rituals: “I’m not a doctor, though I occasionally play one on FOX’s television medical drama “House,” but from what I know obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a type of anxiety disorder. If you have OCD, you have repeated, upsetting thoughts called obsessions, which in turn can lead to an urgent need to perform certain rituals or routines called compulsions over and over again to alleviate your anxiety.” [Hoop Doctors via JE Skeets/BDL]

Cavs vs Magic Open Thread: Game #57

It is a great Sunday afternoon of basketball around the country including two of the most popular teams in the Northeast Ohio area. The #11 Ohio State Buckeyes look to avenge an earlier loss this week to Purdue with a road contest at 12:00 pm on CBS against Big Ten-leading #9 Michigan State 12:00 pm. Meanwhile, starting at 1:00 pm on ABC, the Cleveland Cavaliers continue their tough schedule post-All-Star Break with a road date against the #2 team in the Eastern Conference, the Orlando Magic.

Go ahead and take a look at my article about Evan Turner from yesterday as well as the recap from the Charlotte game on Friday. If that doesn’t get you fired up to see both teams playing better today, I’m not sure what will. The Cavaliers will be looking to see how well Antawn Jamison can perform against Rashard Lewis and the Magic. Head-to-head in their careers, Jamison has the clear upper-hand and the battle continues in what should be a playoff atmosphere at the Amway Arena.

Evan Turner’s Stats Translate into a Productive NBA Career

Evan-TurnerNo player has affected the fortunes of a college basketball team much like Evan Turner of the Ohio State Buckeyes this season. We linked to an article yesterday about the validity of Turner’s Player of the Year candidacy this season courtesy of The Sporting Blog. Now, we are back to look at what makes the junior out of Chicago so successful on the court and how that will determine his future NBA playing style.

First of all, one thing that has truly impressed me as well as the Ohio State faithful has been the resiliency of Turner this. The 6’7″ guard/forward fractured his spine in a horrible fall to the court back on December 5th, where it was proclaimed he would miss up to eight weeks. Lo and behold then, Turner returned to the court on January 6th and two games after that, played all 40 minutes while scoring a season-high 32 points to lead the Buckeyes to a huge road upset victory over the #6 ranked Purdue Boilermakers.

Josh Cribbs Madden_med

Josh Cribbs of the Cleveland Browns might be one of the most exciting players in the NFL. As for his “Madden” character … well, that’s another story.  In a game built on flash, you’d think the man who holds the NFL record for kickoff return touchdowns would be one of the most electric players to take the polygonal field.

Think again.

While Cribbs is rated a 99 overall as a kick returner, his 89 speed makes him slower than current-day LaDainian Tomlinson in the game, and it’s a number that bitter Browns fans have taken to the EA Sports message boards to complain about.  And rightfully so. [Joe Robinson/ESPN]

Buckeyes Show No Love for Illinois on Valentine’s Day

ohiostate_logo1When Jon Diebler is shooting well, the Buckeyes are pretty close to unbeatable.  With Evan Turner, William Buford and David Lighty playing an athletic style of ball diving to the hole the Buckeyes are good.  Combine that with an outside shooter that can bomb and the Buckeyes are great.  And we saw that Buckeyes team on Sunday.  Diebler was 6-11 from the field, and guess what he was from three point land?  That’s right.  6-11.  With 16:55 to go in the first half, the Buckeyes took a lead that they would never relinquish.  To think that they did it on Illinois’ home court too is pretty impressive.

Of course the Buckeyes’ offense wasn’t the whole story.  A look at the box score might lead you to think Illinois just had a really bad game, offensively.  While that may be partially true, the Buckeyes defense was playing at a different speed.  They were playing the 1-3-1 zone and bouncing all over the court.  They were trapping guards, closing out on shooters, collapsing into the lane, and jumping pass lanes.  The result was that they held Illinois to 34.3% shooting from the field including 16.7% from three.  The Illini shot 4 for 24 from three.  A college team doesn’t do that without an impressive defense getting in their faces and making life difficult from the field.
