While We’re Waiting… Damon Being Damon, Harden’s Struggles, and Sandusky, Ohio vs Sandusky, Jerry

“On a mid-May segment of the MLB Network chat showIntentional Talk, hosts Chris Rose and Kevin Millar attempted to stump outfielder Johnny Damon on past teammates. The duo asked the current Cleveland Indian and 18-year vet where, if at all, he had crossed paths with five other players. He batted 1.000, remembering not only the big-league clubs but also where they’d played together in the minors. “I pay attention to my teammates,” he said, laughing that big Johnny Damon laugh. “The tough thing would have been to ask me about my teammates I’m with now. This is the first time I’m actually with them.” Throughout the interview, he frequently glanced offscreen to smile and wave at Chicago White Sox players walking to batting practice. He knew every one of them as well. During the exchange, Damon and Millar only addressed each other as “pimp.” It was broish and stupid, but the subtext was clear: nothing had changed from when the pair were in the clubhouse together. For Damon, once someone’s a teammate, he’s always a teammate.” [Noah Davis/The Classical]

Cavaliers to bring in Sullinger, Melo for workouts

The Cavaliers are expected to bring in Ohio State big man Jared Sullinger on Friday for a workout. No doubt all eyes will be on his red-flagged back. When Sullinger scheduled the workout with the Cavs, he was probably hoping the team might consider him with the fourth pick. That dream has sailed. Now, I’m sure he is hoping that he doesn’t fall to the Cavaliers at number twenty-four.

He shouldn’t. It would surprise this writer if he made it past the Rockets at 16 (their second selection), and I’d be STUNNED if he made it past the Celtics who own picks number 21 and 22.

In his chat yesterday at Cleveland.com, Terry Pluto was adamant that if Sullinger falls to 24, the Cavs shouldn’t hesitate to take a chance on him-

“That’s where you take chances- at 24. Not at 4.”

The Cavaliers are also looking to bring in Syracuse big man Fab Melo, who could also be in town on Friday. Melo was a popular choice for the Cavaliers at 24 on many mock drafts until recently. His stock seems to be on the rise.

Literature and summer baseball. What could be bad? “To that end, I’ve been reading Dickens. A Tale of Two Cities, to be specific. It’s a gorgeous novel about love, both unrequited and not, about sacrifice and atonement. The plot of the book revolves around the French Revolution of 1848. It is not a baseball novel. Now you may ask what A Tale of Two Cities has to do with the Indians 12-5 loss to Cincinnati. As it turns out, there are a number of surprising parallels.” [Susan Petrone/It's Pronounced "Lajaway"]

While We’re Waiting… NBA Combine Measurements, Kyrie Irving Interview, And A Chat With John Mirabelli

While We’re Waiting serves as the early morning gathering of WFNY-esque information for your viewing pleasure. Have something you think we should see? Send it to our tips email at tips@waitingfornextyear.com.

The NBA Draft Combine measurements are always a big discussion items. Draft Express has analysis of the numbers. For example, Florida shooting guard Bradley Beal, “Bradley Beal(6’3.25 without shoes, 6’8 wingpsan, 202 pounds) is almost a mirror image of the average SG in our measurements database (6’3.5 without shoes, 6’7.8 wingspan, 201 pounds). He matches up well with past shooting guard prospects like O.J. Mayo(6’3.25 without shoes, 6’6 wingspan, 200 pounds) andMaurice Ager(6’3.25 without shoes, 6’7.75 wingspan, (203 pounds). Much has been made of Beal as a potentialRay Allen type shooter, and Allen measured in at 6’5 without shoes on in 1996 as a point of reference.” [DraftExpress]

Kyrie Irving was on “CBS This Morning” the other day. Brendan Bowers at Stepien Rules grabbed the video.

Tony Lastoria at Indians Prospect Insider did a Q&A with Indians VP of Scouting John Mirabelli, “Oh yes, they are much different drafts.  In my 22 years of scouting when you start stacking up all the drafts and what all the players have done, I think it is a pretty good guess that this year will have the fewest amount of Major League production. It was a weak draft all the way around. There will be some surprises and some guys that exceed expectations. I don’t think it has been a secret that the professional game has really done a terrific job of signing the high profile high school guys the last few years, and that was really evident in the pool of college position players. A lot of things came into the equation, but in a draft that was a weak draft overall with the picks we had, I really think we made the most of them.” [Indians Prospect Insider] [Read more...]

While We’re Waiting… Browns Minicamp, Second-Round Picks, Chun Chen, Detroit’s Woes

It’s Friday, you all like sports and so do we. Thus, to celebrate this momentous occasion and our shared passion for all things Cleveland, here are some lovely links we thought you might enjoy. You know the drill: Share your thoughts in the comment section. Email us your suggestions for tomorrow’s WWW at tips@waitingfornextyear.com.

This is a nice compilation of reports from recent activity over at Browns minicamp: “Based on the way things sounded, if you had walked up to minicamp and caught the beginning of practice, Brandon Weeden would not have looked like a very competent quarterback. Burge notes that he horribly underthrew a ball early on, and cornerback Dimitri Patterson baited him into another throw. Colt McCoy, on the other hand, was deemed as having a “solid practice” by Ulrich.” [Chris Pokorny/Dawgs By Nature] [Read more...]
