Football is King in Ohio, but is Ohio King of Football?

Friend of the site Mark Leonard is back with another guest piece, but this time he seems to have had a little too much time on his hands and a visit to Pro Football Reference. You can see Mark’s other guest pieces here.

Have you ever wondered which state has produced the all-time most or fewest NFL players? Or which foreign countries have generated the most football pros, active players or hall-of-famers?

Have you ever wondered what pros share your birthday or birthplace? Did you know only one American state is without an active NFL player?

Were one to visit the aforementioned web address and click onto the sub-category “Fun,” one could discover an itemization of all players born on that date. Or search for those whose births fall on a differently identified day. Or learn the identities of all those born in a given state, city or country.

For example, an examination of a link to “birth places” reveals that Vermont is not only the sole state without an active player, but also the location generating the fewest all-time NFL athletes (9) participating in the fewest total of league games (376). Only Alaskans (14) have scored fewer career touchdowns than Vermont’s 16, totals commonly exceeded by a single player most any season. [Read more...]

NFL Players Association Asking Too Much of Undrafted Players

Labor disputes are never pretty. We knew that when the NFL Players Association decertified in an attempt to preempt any potential lockout that this process was going to become long and ugly. The problem with these kind of disputes is that often times there are a lot of innocent bystanders who get hurt in the process.

I’m not just talking about the fans, although they certainly are being unfairly asked to watch these two entities whine in public about how to split billions of dollars. I’m not talking about the run of the mill people who are employed by the teams, whether it be ushers, ticket salespeople, secretaries, etc, who potentially face job insecurity if there’s no football this fall. Ohio State Once Again Playing For More Than Just a Simple Bowl Win

As we approach tonight’s Sugar Bowl battle between the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Arkansas Razorbacks, we find the Buckeyes in familiar territory. Once again Ohio State is fighting more than just their opponent on the field. They’re fighting against fans who feel that the players involved in sold merchandise scandal shouldn’t be allowed to play. They’re fighting for respect for the Big Ten after the humiliation the conference suffered on New Years Day. They’re fighting to get the SEC monkey off their back. Above all else, they’re fighting to make a statement.

Whether it’s fair or not, the majority of all of this scrutiny and pressure falls pretty squarely on the coaching mind of Jim Tressel and on the legs and arm of quarterback Terrelle Pryor. For Pryor, someone who already has to carry far too much of the offensive load for this team, his share of the work load could be increased if whispers and radio rumors are true. [Read more...]

Rumor: Mangini Done According to WKNR Sources

I have been saying for a while that any talk of Mangini and the proverbial “hot seat” is silly. I still feel that way, but it is complex.

Sabrina Parr from WKNR reported this morning that regardless of what Mangini does in his last three games, he is out as head coach. Co-host Chris Fedor then added that the Browns are having difficulty finding a new offensive coordinator because there is a lack of willingness in candidates to work with Mangini.

Now, we have no idea whether this is true or not; I have no idea what confidence level to place on this rumor. But let’s just pretend that it is true for the sake of discussion. It is important to finally get this out there because I haven’t talked a lot about the raging “Mangini debate.” The reason is that the debate has been mostly flawed up to this point. Nobody can seem to figure out what they are really talking about and stay focused. Here are the various camps in the debate. [Read more...]

Ohio State Notes: Captains and Depth Charts Released

The kick off to the 2010 Ohio State Buckeyes season is just a week away. That’s right, Ohio State takes on Marshall next Thursday, September 2nd, at the Shoe. With the first game so close at hand, there are a few housekeeping issues that needed to be taken care of. [Read more...]

Ohio State vs Michigan: A Lesson in Greed and Foolishness

How do you feel about tradition? Some feel tradition is a tool of the intellectually lazy. They would argue that there should be no such thing as tradition, that instead there should just be what is and what is not. If upon close rational examination, a new path or idea is deemed to be the preferred way, then that is the path that should be followed.

Still others would argue that tradition is necessary and vital to culture because it upholds certain ideals and allows them to maintain from generation to generation. In other words, without tradition, the links to our past would be gone and it would be hard for anything to organically hold any extra value or level of importance to us.

Which brings us to the greatest rivalry in American sports. [Read more...]

Ohio State Lands Terrelle Pryor’s Heir Apparent in Braxton Miller

It’s impossible to discuss the QB position at Ohio State without looking at it through the context of Terrelle Pryor. While the jury may still be out of Pryor’s ability to live up to the hype surrounding his recruitment, there’s no escaping or mistaking the weight of that publicity. So while Wayne High School (Huber Heights, OH) quarterback Braxton Miller may not have been the most hyped player Jim Tressel ever landed, he just might be the best QB Coach Tressel has ever pulled in.

At a press conference at his high school this afternoon, Braxton Miller, the #2 QB in the nation according to both ESPNU and Rivals (Miller was the #1 QB according to Scout.com), announced his intentions to join the 2011 class at The Ohio State University. Miller had offers from over 40 schools, and prior to making his announcements, his finalists were Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Notre Dame, and Ohio State, with Florida and OSU the supposed final 2 schools.  [Read more...]

Mike Holmgren Vows To Do A Better Job

While we may not yet know exactly how successful the new Browns regime is going to be, you can’t blame anyone for being skeptical. Lets face it, we’ve seen this dog and pony show before, and we’ve been burned by it before. Cleveland Browns fans have time and time again put their faith in new management, new coaches, new players, etc, etc, etc. The results have always been the same, though…..bitter disappointment.

So if anyone is hesitant to jump on board with Mike Holmgren and Tom Heckert, I’m not going to blame them. Personally, however, I am 1000% on board. I’m closing my eyes and I’m making the leap of faith.

I’m not saying that I think Holmgren and crew are definitely going to turn this franchise around. It’s way too early to judge that either way. Instead, what I’m encouraged by is the change in culture that Holmgren has brought to town. No more secrecy, no more power struggles, no more chaos. Holmgren is open and wants to be accountable for everything. Furthermore, he seems to genuinely care about the fans and wants an open line of communication between management and fans.   [Read more...]

NFL Draft News: Mock Roundup Sees Eric Berry’s Name Pop Up In Cleveland

Eric BerryJust as it is with NBA Trade Rumor season, so to is NFL Draft Rumor season one of those things you either like or loathe. I personally love everything about the NFL draft because to me it represents unlimited possibilities. There’s nothing but hope and ambition in the air when I read about prospects, mock drafts, etc.

In the latest mock draft by Pat Kirwan for NFL.com, he has our beloved Cleveland Browns taking Tennessee safety Eric Berry with the #7 pick. Seeing as how that’s the guy I have wanted since day one, this is obviously pleasantly exciting to see. But how does it compare to some other notable mock drafts? Let’s take a look around the web and see, shall we? [Read more...]

NFL Trade Rumors: Browns Shopping Quinn?

quinnThis has already been such a whirlwind and tumultuous offseason for the Cleveland Browns organization, and no position has faced more uncertainty than the QB. As the Browns were shopping for the man to take over the Czar role in Berea, questions arose about how each of the candidates would handle the QBs on the roster.

Once Holmgren was hired, the common initial perception was that Holmgren would remove head coach Eric Mangini and bring in a West Coast Offense guy. Well, that didn’t happen, and so Mangini was given the chance to prove himself this season. Again, there were initial thoughts then that Mangini would now let Brady Quinn finally be the announced starting QB in the off season, giving him a full year to prove himself. However, the trade for Seneca Wallace at least raised some doubts about who the starter would be. Throw in all the pageantry surrounding Derek Anderson’s release, and you have yourself a real life soap opera unfolding right before your eyes. [Read more...]

Can We Have a UFL Team?

UFL LogoObviously, I am not looking to replace the Browns.  At the same time, a little Northeast Ohio professional football supplement like we had with the Gladiators arena team for a season would be nice, right?  We learned this morning that the Browns were working out a great many UFL players whose season ended already including RB DeDe Dorsey, DB Michael Grant, and T Jeremy Parquet.  I won’t pretend to know who all these guys are, except I remember DeDe Dorsey playing for my wife’s Colts for a minute.  That doesn’t mean that I wouldn’t be willing to learn who they are if the UFL found a way to expand to some region of Northeast Ohio.

I know a lot of you probably are thinking that you don’t really want to line up to watch JP Losman take on Brooks Bollinger in any kind of shootout on a football field.  I can understand that, I guess.  Then again, if they had never failed to become NFL players, would it matter?  I got geeked up about watching Raymond Philyaw play for the Cleveland Gladiators and he was a never-was in the NFL. Browns May Want To Show Patience With Brady Quinn After All

quinnSo here’s the scenario the Browns find themselves in with Brady Quinn. The team is 1-9 with six games to go coming off perhaps the most humiliating loss of the last five years. We’re entering that funny part of the season, where the Browns annually tend to play their worst football. This is when the team is tired of losing and tired of putting in the effort and not seeing any results for their hard work. It’s frustrating for the players and frustrating for the fans. And it’s in this climate that the Browns are now forced to decipher what can be salvaged of Brady Quinn’s career.

On the season Quinn’s numbers look as such: six games, five starts. 80-141 (56.7%) for 812 yards (5.76 yards per attempt). Five TD, five interceptions. That’s a QB rating of 70.4. Not the most inspiring numbers, but also not the black hole of QB play that Derek Anderson has been. But the question is, has Brady Quinn done enough for the Browns to make a decision either way on his future in Cleveland? As of three days ago, I was convinced the Browns should just wipe the slate clean and be done with him. I was probably wrong, though.   [Read more...]

Navy No Pushover For Buckeyes In Week 1

Terrelle Pryor

While we still have to wait another whole week before the Browns season officially kicks off, those of us who follow college football can celebrate the beginning of a new season this weekend. Unlike recent years, when Ohio State opened up the season with Youngstown State or Miami (OH), this year the Buckeyes will face a team that can potentially be a nuisance to OSU.

While Navy isn’t exactly a modern powerhouse of a football program, they are a team that has had a lot of modest success lately. They have had 6 straight winning seasons and 6 straight bowl appearances. Over those 6 years, they have gone 51-25. And while they only went 2-4 in those 6 bowl games, they certainly hung around with far superior teams, losing by 1 to Boston College in 2006, losing by 3 to Utah in 2007, and losing by 10 to Wake Forest last year.

There’s no question Ohio State has more talent than those previously mentioned teams, but OSU faces a lot of turnover in their starting lineup, and their first game will ensure that they can’t afford to not get it put together quickly. For their part, Navy has lost a lot of players at the skilled positions, and so they too will be learning on the fly as a team, but Navy plays a style of football that can harass almost anyone.    [Read more...]

QB Questions Just Status Quo For Browns

Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson

As summer drags on, with baseball winding down and basketball still a couple months away, all eyes in Cleveland are focused on the Browns. We follow training camp, and try to decipher how the team looks when scrimmaging and performing drills against themselves. We watch meaningless preseason games with much anticipation and scrutiny. As football fans, it’s what we do.

For fans of the Cleveland Browns, though, preseason usually means a little more to us than most fans of other teams. The reason for this is that almost every season since the Browns returned to the NFL in 1999 they have been indecisive in terms of naming a starter at QB and as a result they have brought out the banality in QB competitions.

While most teams have named their starter by now, and are giving that guy significant reps with the first team offense to make sure everyone is on the same page and a sense of chemistry is being found, the Browns continuously toil in indecision and insecurity when it comes to the most important position in the NFL. By the time the Browns name their starter in most seasons, that player is already behind most teams and when the season opens, while other QBs are already comfortable and know their place in the offense, the Browns QBs are routinely just trying to get settled in.   [Read more...]

Tyler Moeller Attacker Now Facing Felony

Ralph Gray DeckerHeading into this college football preseason, most people would have figured the biggest story surrounding the Ohio State Buckeyes would be about Terrelle Pryor’s development in his first camp as the unquestioned starter and leader of the team. Or perhaps it would be about the Buckeyes going for their 5th consecutive Big Ten title, and how they would overcome having just 11 returning starters in order to do so.

Unfortunately, that hasn’t really been the case, as the sad story of Tyler Moeller’s attack in Florida has been the biggest story surrounding the team thus far. On July 26th, as Tyler Moeller and his family were in Florida celebrating his grandparents’ anniversary, Moeller and several family members were at a bar when Moeller was punched (allegedly sucker punched), and hit his head on the ground, leading to him eventually having to have surgery to relieve the pressure. The extent of his injuries long term isn’t totally clear, but while it is now believed that he will be able to play again at some point, but unfortunately that point in time will not be this season.    [Read more...]

OSU Football – A Season On The Brink Of…

Ohio State Buckeyes

As the OSU alumni here, Rock and Denny thought it might be good to take a look at this upcoming football season placed in the context of the program itself.  There’s no denying the fact that right now the Buckeyes are doing quite well.  The fact remains, however, that things have seemingly gone south (from playing against the SEC, LOL!) for them in the past few years.  We do our best to address the upcoming season as we see it.

Going in to the National Championship game in 2005, OSU Football was on top of the world. OSU fans were sure they were going to win that game, Jim Tressel was perceived to be an unbeatable big game coach, etc. Now, the Buckeyes are seen as a national embarrassment, they’re the butt of jokes on national talk shows and message boards everywhere….and yet they’ve won at least 10 games in 4 straight years, have won a share of 4 straight Big Ten titles, played in 2 National Championship games in that time, and only twice in his 8 years has Tressel failed to win 10 games. Not to mention the staggering 7-1 record vs Michigan. This should be the golden era of Ohio State Football, but in many ways, it’s not.

So where are the Buckeyes as a program right now? The swagger is gone, but the potential is still there. With all of this in mind, Denny and myself decided to take a look at some of the pressing questions that are lying under the surface as Ohio State prepares for this season.    [Read more...]

While We’re Waiting… Cavs Season Tickets, Keeping Victor Martinez, and an OSU NCAA10

Five Bucks Ain't Gonna Cut It

Briefly mentioned it here late last night, and Brian Windhorst follows up with some pretty sick numbers: “In perhaps the toughest economy in the NBA’s history, the Cavs are showing a surge in season-ticket sales and experiencing a jump in ticket revenue.  The Cavs have sold out 36 consecutive games and the trends indicate they will likely threaten to sell out the entire upcoming season. [...] As of July 6, the Cavs had gotten renewals from 94.5 percent of their season-ticket holders from last season. That’s first among all NBA teams, edging out the Boston Celtics and Portland Trail Blazers. A year ago, the Cavs got renewals on about 77 percent of their season tickets through last December.” [Brian Windhorst/Plain Dealer]

U.S. Executes Improbable Comeback to Tie El Salvador

We don’t really talk soccer or futbol here much, but I happened to catch last night’s qualifier between the U.S. and El Salvador in an away match last night.  Like all games that the U.S. plays on the road, the environment is terrifying.  Think if you taught Oakland Raiders fans and the Dawg Pound how to coordinate cheers and had them both filling a stadium to root for the same team.  Now put them all in blue and have them screaming, chanting, throwing things, blowing whistles and sounding off police sirens.  That is what the U.S. faced last night in El Salvador.  Combine that with the historically well-known stories of blaring music, firecrackers, and pulled fire alarms at hotels where the U.S. team stays on road trips and you have yourself the daunting task of winning a soccer game.

To be fair, I don’t know if the U.S. had any of those excuses last night in their game against El Salvador.  I should hope that they do though, as the U.S. sleepwalked through the first three fourths of the game.  They seemed lethargic as their counterattacks fell flat and seemed toothless.  Meanwhile, El Salvador seemed to be playing at a different pace.  They were flying to the ball and clogging the midfield and counterattacking at every opportunity.  And it paid off.  They scored their first goal early in the game, and then in the 72nd minute they scored what seemed to be the icing on the cake for El Salvador.  They made the U.S. defense look silly as the left back gave up a run to the end line after getting juked out of his shorts.  A cross and a header later and the U.S. was down by two with about 17 minutes remaining plus or minus injury time.

But the U.S. caught a burst of energy. [Read more...]

Maurice Clarett is Blogging

Maurice Clarett will always be known around these parts for helping deliver one of the happiest moments in my sports life.  His performance at Ohio State in driving them to a win in the National Championship game over Miami will always be the thing about him that I remember most.  I know that isn’t the case for most other people in the world.  Most people will remember the man who was armed to the teeth, and had to be subdued with mace, and tasers while wearing kevlar.

You say tomato…

Anyway, now Mo is serving 7 years in prison and apparently started up a blog.  I don’t know if it is real or not. [Read more...]
