Indians 3, Angels 2: Win One with the Kipper

Guess what?  TD is out of town again.  Which means you’ll be subjected to another “live” recap.  I know what you’re thinking: “I don’t pay my hard-earned blog-related money for no stinking ‘live recap’!”  You’re right.  You don’t.

But if you’d like to, I accept personal checks and/or gift cards to the Home Depot.  I’ve got a pretty nice little Saturday planned, actually…

7:21: So I’m a bit late getting started here.  I ate dinner around 7:05, fully expecting the top of the first inning to be going on still, what with Fausto’s proclivity for being bad.  Instead, he sends down the Angels in the top of the first 1-2-3.  He looked fine, but we all know how that story goes.

An added bonus?  In the bottom of the first, Michael Brantley rips a double down the right field line with one out, followed by a single from Asdrubal to score him.  This means the Indians have already hit the over in hits (1.5) and runs (0.5) for the game.  Yes, those numbers are made up, but Dan Haren is good enough that it’s not outside the realm of possibility.  A nice start. So This Is What A Losing Streak Feels Like

LeBron JamesCleveland 95, Indiana 96 [box]

The Cleveland Cavaliers have had all sorts of “firsts” this season. Earlier in the year, it seemed like nothing but the good kind of firsts, but lately, they’ve been going through some of the bad firsts. On Sunday against the Lakers, coming off 3 days rest and playing a Lakers team without Andrew Bynum and with a sick Kobe Bryant and playing their 6th straight road game, the Cavaliers lost their first home game of the season. Tuesday night, the Cavaliers lost to the Indiana Pacers, securing their first streak of consecutive losses this season.

It wasn’t for a lack of effort on LeBron James’ part, though. LeBron was on fire from the field in this game, and seemingly was able to get to the basket at will, a lethal combination. LeBron ended up with 47 points (15-21 from the field, 4-7 from 3pt, and 13-14 on FTs), seven rebounds, four assists, one steal, and one block. But alas, the incredible effort by LeBron wasn’t enough.  [Read more...]

Cavaliers Top Bobcats: Scoreboard Watching…

Cavaliers 111, Bobcats 81 (Box)

The Cavaliers were disposing of the Bobcats, meanwhile Boston continued their slide, and Detroit finally had their win streak snapped. Could it be? Could the Cavs (28-6) be the Eastern Conference leader? Are they, at least for the moment, the best team in the league? Could this really be an ESPN reporter saying LeBron to NY makes no sense?

Oh yeah, about the game….

Home Perfection Remains Intact

LeBron James high fiving fansCavaliers 99  Rockets 90 [box]

In a game that often felt like a playoff game in both atmosphere and in physical and intense play, the Cavaliers were able to hang on to beat the Houston Rockets 99-90. The game was everything it was supposed to be. A tough, back and forth affair between two similar teams who both pride themselves on their defense. The Rockets defense did a great job of forcing the Cavaliers into a pretty uncharacteristically high 14 turnovers compared to only 16 assists. This game was far from the Cavaliers best offensive night, but much of the credit must go to Houston’s defense. In the end, though, the Cavaliers did just enough to get the big win.    [Read more...]

A Night For The Record Books

Zydrunas IlgauskasThe Cleveland Cavaliers experienced a night full of history, and in the meantime pushed their newest winning streak to 9 games by topping the Toronto Raptors.

Raptors 94 Cavaliers 114 [box]

Nine wins in a row. All nine by a margin of at least 12 points. No team…ever…in the history of the NBA…has ever pulled it off. Well, other than the Cleveland Cavaliers, that is. With this 20 point victory over the free falling Raptors, the Cavaliers made NBA history by becoming the first team in NBA history to have a 9 game win streak with such impressive margins of victory. Along the way, a couple franchise records fell as well.

In the first minute of the game, LeBron James knocked the ball away from Jose Calderon, notching the 735th steal of his career, to take over as the sole leader in steals in franchise history from team legend Mark Price. Mike Brown called a timeout shortly after to give the crowd a chance to acknowledge the feat of the young phenom. It’s amazing that in just his 6th NBA season and at a mere 23 years old, LeBron James is already all over the Cavaliers franchise record books. He’s already the all time leader in points and now steals, but he’s creeping up everywhere else as well. He’s 3rd in FGs, 3rd in attempts, 4th in 3-pt FGs, 2nd in 3-pt FG attempts, 2nd in FTs, 2nd in FT attempts, 8th in rebounds, 2nd in assists, and 8th in blocks. At 23, most people are just graduating college and looking for a job. LeBron? He’s already the king of an entire franchise.    [Read more...]

Blown Out In A New York Minute

LeBron James vs the New York KnicksLeBron James takes over New York again and leads the Cavaliers to an impressive thrashing of the overwhelmed Knicks.

Cleveland 119, New York 101 [box]

Sometimes a win can mean a little bit more than just +1 in the standings. Sometimes a moral victory can be found on top of the atonement of just a regular win.

It won’t mean anything more to the players themselves, but to a fanbase that has been mercilessly exposed to torturous rumor after rumor of LeBron James’ imminent departure for New York in 2010, this win was fun. More so than just the satisfaction of beating the Knicks in Madison Square Garden, this one was made all the more joyous by the systematic dismantling that took place.

For one night, the fans in Cleveland and the people in Ohio could find vicarious comfort in watching the Cavaliers display their utter dominance over the New York basketball team. The city of New York may have more going for it than the city of Cleveland, as everyone likes to remind us every single day now, but for at least the next two years, it’s Cleveland who has the championship caliber basketball team.     [Read more...]

Eight In A Row

LeBron JamesLeBron James becomes the youngest player in NBA history to reach the 11,000 point mark en route to leading the Cavaliers over the Nets for their eight straight win of the season.

Cleveland 106, New Jersey 82 [box]

Tuesday night was more of the same for the Cleveland Cavaliers, and for once in this franchise’s history, that’s actually a good thing. A great thing, if you will. The Cavaliers walked through the first half only occasionally playing tough defense or running the offense, and found themselves trailing the Nets 52-49 at halftime.

Following the script, the Cavaliers came out and played lights out defense in the 2nd half and took care of the ball themselves and relied on clutch shooting from the backcourt to dominate the 2nd stage 57-30. You read that right. New Jersey had 28 points in the first quarter, and then the Cavaliers held them to just 30 points in the entire 2nd half.    [Read more...]

Make It Five

LeBron JamesThe Cavaliers followed their M.O. for this season-start out well, play lackluster for the middle portion of the game, then turn it on and take over the game in the 4th quarter-to take down the Milwaukee Bucks and extend their winning streak to 5.

Milwaukee 93, Cleveland 99 [box]

Well, it’s starting to look like some trends are starting to become routine. This Cavaliers team knows hot to win, we can give them that. They know how to beat the the teams they should beat. The Cavaliers still don’t have a bad loss on the season, but other than their thrashing of the Mavericks in Dallas, they also don’t have any great wins. Sure, Indiana is much improved and the rally to beat the Bulls in Chicago was nice, but lets not get too excited about wins over Charlotte, Chicago twice, Indiana, and Milwaukee.

What we can get excited about, though, is that the Cavaliers are now 6-2 and they stand alone atop the Central Division. The Cavaliers already have a 5 game winning streak. Last season, their longest streak was five, and that only happened once, in the month of January. This team looks leaps and bounds ahead of last year’s team, but this year’s team also still has a lot to improve on.   [Read more...]

A Win Is A Win

Mo WilliamsFor the second straight night the Cavaliers use a dominant 4th quarter performance to overcome early sluggish and unengaged performance.

Cleveland 106, Chicago 97 [box]

It certainly wasn’t pretty, but the Cavaliers will take it gladly. Coming off a lackluster effort for 3 quarters Friday night, the Cavaliers looked doomed to fall victim to the dreaded road finale of back to back games, but instead LeBron James took over the game again and the Cavaliers used a 32-20 4th quarter domination to beat the short-handed Chicago Bulls 106-97.

The Cavaliers are certainly becoming habitual and predictable, but in a good way. Once again the Cavaliers offense was clicking to start the game as they jumped out to a 32-28 first quarter advantage. And once again they played poorly in the 2nd and 4rd quarters, before turning it on in the final quarter to put away the pesky Bulls. The Cavaliers are showing a certain swagger and determination to finish games that was too often lacking last season. It’s a promising sign as the Cavaliers move to 5-2 on the young season and they moved into a virtual tie with the idle Pistons for 1st place in the Central Division, trailing by one in the loss column.    [Read more...]

Browns Victory Breeds Smiles, Hides Flaws

They say a win is a win. How true. No matter how pathetic the Cleveland Browns looked against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday afternoon, all that will be noted when people look back on this one is that the Browns came away with the win by the final score of 20-12. Forget the atrocious play of QB Derek Anderson once more, forget the mere 43 yards rushing Jamal Lewis came up with after the game’s very first drive despite the Bengals having only the 28th ranked rush defense in the league, forget the 9 penalties (most of which were mental in nature), forget the fact that the Bengals were playing without their leader, captain, Pro Bowler, All-Pro QB Carson Palmer and instead had a QB making his first start since 2005 and who played his college ball at Harvard, forget the fact that the Browns were losing 6-3 to an 0-3 team with no QB heading into the 4th quarter. No, instead, people (the Browns) will say that all that matters is coming out unscathed with a win and that the Browns are now 1-3 instead of 0-4.

You’ll have to excuse me if I’m not beaming with enthusiasm after having to sit through yet another inexcusably poor performance for 3 quarters, and even into the 4th quarter. This was a game in which the Browns mustered only 134 net yards rushing and 127 net yards passing. Derek Anderson managed a QB Score of -9 for the game, a vast improvement from his QB Score of -121 the week before, but it was still his 3rd consecutive game with a negative QB Score.  [Read more...]

Lee, Long Ball Equal Nine Straight

Indians 10, Tigers 4 (box)

One of my bigger complaints earlier in the season was when Cliff Lee would wind up with a no decision after pitching masterfully through seven or eight innings, either thanks to a lack of run support or a bullpen implosion.  Neither was the case yesterday evening as the sticks came out in grand fashion – enough to weather a two-run ninth inning from none other than Eddie Mujica’s 7.50 ERA-tossing right arm.

After seven and two-thirds innings of six-hit ball, Lee is one win away from the Indians’ first 20-game winner in 34 years.  Thirtyfour.  And per Stats Inc (via MLB.com), Lee’s numbers will place him the history books that date back to 1920 after winning 19 of his first 21 decisions.

Bullpen Can’t Stop the Streaking

Indians 4, Rangers 3 (box)

You have to assume that Eric Wedge knew he would be in trouble during yesterday’s game, as he would be without Jensen Lewis and Rafael Perez.  If by chance we had the lead in the late innings, he would have to turn to (gulp) Rafael Betancourt and his five-plus ERA.

Well, even with Betancourt and Juan Rincon combining for two earned runs in two innings, Franklin Gutierrez went Karim Garcia (hat tip to DP) once again by coming through with a huge hit in the ninth inning to drive in the winning run.

Eric Wedge is Alive!!

Indians 8, Rangers 7 (box)

While checking out Mo Andrews’ last show before he heads off to windier pastures in the city of Chicago, I was able to catch one of the more intense moments over the last few weeks of Tribe baseball.  And yes, baseball is still going on, believe it or not!

But while Kelly Shoppach was easily the hero at the plate with his 2-for-4, three RBI night, I have to give last night’s MVP (and perhaps pie-in-the-face) honors to Eric Wedge.  After the six-run fifth inning tied things up, Wedge took full advantage of his opportunities in the eighth.

RISP Was Not Our Friend

Tigers 8, Indians 5 (box)

This game came down to one thing: Capitalization.  The Tigers did, and the Indians did not.  Seven of the eight Tiger runs came with two outs; the Indians were 3-for-17 with runners in scoring position.

More than one occasion found the Indians getting the lead-off man aboard.  When Grady Sizemore and David Dellucci went for back-to-back doubles to start the fourth, we then followed up with three straight outs.  The last four men in our lineup (Shoppach, Marte, Garko and Cabrera) combined to go 2-for-13.  The bottom four for Detroit?  Six for 15 with seven RBI.

Paul, Is That You?

Indians 5, Tigers 0 (box)

First, 1-and-5 Jeremy Sowers goes perfect through five and now 5-and-10 Paul Byrd shuts out the Tigers through seven and two-thirds?  Not to mention, it all comes after former Cy Young candidate Fausto Carmona gets lit up in only two plus frames.

The official site had an interesting stat; one that I was unaware of.  In his career against Detroit, Paul Byrd is 10-2 with a 3.33 ERA.  Considering that he has been borderline awful this season, these numbers are very surprising – but they speak volumes for how well the veteran has pitched for us prior to this year.  Plus, this was all perfect timing considering that the team is likely looking to move Byrd prior to the season’s end.  Hopefully, there were a few scouts in the crowd last night.
