NBA News: Greg Oden unlikely to sign until summer

It’s been out there for at least a week, but we haven’t explicitly stated it yet on WFNY: Greg Oden, former No. 1 pick and possible free agent to a number of NBA teams, is unlikely to sign until the summer.

Initially, the report might have been first listed in Yahoo! Sports’ Marc Spears’ power rankings on Feb. 19. It had seemed earlier last month that Oden was leaning toward the Cavaliers, but now such a decision is likely to be delayed until at least early July.

Mark Schmitt Boyer of the Plain Dealer also answered a question about Oden in her Sunday mailbag today:

“Hey, Mary: If the Cavs end up signing Greg Oden, I know they need to open a spot on the roster. I had been assuming that they would waive Kevin Jones, but recently I have been hearing talk about the team buying out Omri Casspi’s contract. How do you think they would do it? – Chris Stevens, Concord

Hey, Chris: Oden’s agent has told reporters that his client won’t sign until the summer, and the Cavs could have multiple openings, since they have several players with expiring contracts, including Casspi, Daniel Gibson and Luke Walton. Mo Speights could opt out as well. Should they try to sign Oden before that, waiving Jones would seem to be the most likely option.”

Oden’s last NBA game occurred on Dec. 5, 2009. He only played 82 games in his Portland career. But, he only turned 25 in January and reports from his agent, Mike Conley Sr., appear to say that he is at 100 percent. So it would seem that the Cavaliers could be one of many suitors for his services this upcoming summer.

Pro and Cons of Greg Oden

Singing Oden will be worth it for the old man and porn jokes alone.

Signing Oden will be worth it for the old man and porn jokes alone.

I love the  idea of the Cavs signing Greg Oden.

I love the idea of kicking the tires on a former number one pick and seeing if he can revive his career in the wine and gold.

I love that the Cavs are mentioned alongside perennial contenders  like the Miami Heat and Boston Celtics as Oden suitors.

And while it’s usually the Indians (with guys like Kevin Millwood), I love when Cleveland teams take low-risk, high-reward deals.

Sure, there are some problems. Since being drafted in 2007, Greg Oden has appeared in less NBA games (82) than Kyrie Irving (90).  He’s had a multiple microfracture surgeries. He’s battled alcohol, leaked private photos and the dealt with pressure of being the face of a franchise. He hasn’t played in a NBA basketball game since December of 2009. Greg Oden is far from a sure thing.

So why do I want the Cavs to sign an oft-injured center to a multi-year contract?

Because he went to Ohio State, duh.

NBA News: Cavaliers prepared to offer Greg Oden a two-year deal

Recently pegged as one of the few teams to be potential suitors for former Ohio State center Greg Oden, the Cleveland Cavaliers are reportedly set to offer the 25-year old a two-year contract with a team option for a third year. Jason Lloyd of the Akron Beacon-Journal reports that this deal will be offered after the February 21 NBA trade deadline.

Oden, who underwent microfracture knee surgery one year ago, averaged 9.4 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.4 blocks in 82 career NBA games since being drafted in 2007 — he posted a PER of 23.1 as recent as 2009-10 before his season was ended prematurely after just 21 games.  Rehabilitating his knee, the seven-footer is presently living in Columbus, Ohio. The Miami Heat and Boston Celtics are allegedly also in the running for Oden, but the Cavaliers can offer the injury-plagued big man more money and additional years on a contract.

Presently one of the most financially flexible teams in the league, the Cavaliers have roughly $4 million in salary cap space.

NBA Rumors: Cavs and Heat leaders to sign Greg Oden

The Cleveland Cavaliers and the Miami Heat have reportedly emerged as the leaders to land former first-overall pick Greg Oden.

Jeff Goodman of CBS Sports says that the seven-foot product out of Ohio State, who has suffered multiple knee injuries since being drafted in 2007, is leaning toward either playing in Miami for the minimum or in Cleveland where he would be able to net considerably more money. Oden is hoping visit down to Miami to meet with Pat Riley and the Heat in the next week, a source told CBS Sports. He is currently working out in Columbus, Ohio, rehabilitating from his third microfracture knee surgery back in February of 2012.

Oden, 25, has averaged 9.4 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.4 blocks in 82 career NBA games.  His signing would undoubtedly be a risk, but one that comes with immense reward if Oden could live up to the potential he had when he was selected before Kevin Durant six seasons ago.

Leading off, Chris Pokorny at Dawgs By Nature gives his take on Mike Lombardi joining the Browns, “Banner clearly liked working with Lombardi during their short time together in Philadelphia. I think Tom Heckert could have stayed with the team if he had been able to retain the general manager position in the same capacity, but I don’t think he was interested in a reduced, collaborative role that he would have had to play with Banner and others. Without question, I would have preferred Heckert over Lombardi. Heck, given the negativity surrounding Lombardi, I would have preferred a lot of other candidates over Lombardi. Given the fact that we knew this would be a reduced role, though, I just don’t think this is, “the end of the world.”" [Dawgs By Nature]

Former beloved Tribe centerfielder Kenny Lofton used to play hoops pretty well, you know. The Classical has a really great profile about it, “The Wildcats celebrated their coming out party with a good old-fashioned snowball fight, and Lofton played a starring role in that battle, too. “Basically, it was Kenny versus the rest of us because he had such a ridiculous arm. He was throwing snowballs like 100 miles per hour, just knocking guys off their feet,” Mason Jr. remembers. “Afterwards, we said to him, ‘Man, you should play baseball.’” Eventually, Lofton would take the suggestion seriously. But the East Chicago, Ind. native had some work left to do on the hardwood before he’d trade in his sneakers for spikes.” [The Classical] [Read more...]

While We’re Waiting… Chris Perez Loves Video Games, Josh Gordon Thoughts, Greg Oden to Cavs?

Chris Perez talks about his love of video games and beards. What could possibly be more manly? Except for that whole Ravens bit: “‘I’m actually a huge gamer,’ Perez says, adding that he brings his PlayStation 3 on road trips throughout the season to keep up with his ‘Madden’ franchise. ‘I always play as the Ravens. Ray Rice is a beast in that game. Then you have the Hit Stick with Ray Lewis, Ed Reed and Terrell Suggs. That’s a team that’s tough to beat.’ But the PS3 isn’t Perez’s first foray into gaming; he’s been busting his thumbs since the early days of Nintendo.” [Jon Robinson/ESPN.com Playbook] [Read more...]

Report: Former Buckeye Greg Oden Undergoes Additional Microfracture Surgery

Undergoing what was supposed to be a procedure to clear debris resulted in yet another microfracture surgery in the left knee of former Ohio State center Greg Oden.

Reported by the Associated Press, the procedure performed in Vail, Colorado established that there had been additional damage sustained by the 7-footer’s left knee. The first-overall selection in the 2007 NBA Draft, Oden has now had three microfracture surgeries, this latest being the second on this specific knee. The selection, and subsequent misfortune, of Oden will likely go down along side the Blazers selecting Kentucky center Sam Bowie ahead of North Carolina’s Michael Jordan in 1984.

Agreeing to a one-year deal prior to the 2011-12 season, it was hoped that Oden could see the floor for the Portland Trailblazers, but two separate set-backs have derailed his return. Oden, who has not played in an NBA game since Dec. 5, 2009, has appeared in 82 career games for the Blazers, averaging 9.4 points and 7.3 rebounds.

While We’re Waiting…Buckeyes Head To Phog Allen, Oden Suffers Setback

Previewing #2 OSU / #13 Kansas later today down at Phog Allen Fieldhouse:  ”After an early loss to #1 Kentucky in New York, Kansas rebounded to make it to the Maui Invitational final. But sloppy defense late and an improbable 3-pointer led to another loss against #6 Duke. Since then, the Jayhawks have won 3 straight against inferior competition in preparation for OSU. It usually takes a couple of weeks to recover from the Maui trip, and in addition to that the team battled “the crud” for a bit before shaking it off.

Helping to make up for the loss of so much fire-power, and especially the loss of the Morris twins, is junior forward Thomas Robinson. Robinson has been a beast on the front-court, at one point recording six straight double-doubles. Robinson racked up a career high 26 points in KU’s victory against Long Beach State on Tuesday and also grabbed 11 boards. He is not as large as Sullinger, but he cleans the glass pretty well, averaging 12 rebounds per game.

Another key player for Kansas is senior point guard Tyshawn Taylor. Taylor is a distributor, but he’s also a serious scoring threat from the one. He’s shooting nearly 46% from the field this season, including a sizzling 57% from downtown. Reserve guard Conner Teahan is another dead-eye shooter from distance, hitting 45% of his threes. He helped the Jayhawks break the game open against Long Beach, hitting 4 triples and scoring a career high 14 points.”  [Joe Beale  / Eleven Warriors] [Read more...]

David Lighty Steals the Show Against Illini

David Lighty is a cagey NCAA veteran at 22-years of age. He has seemingly been in Columbus forever.

We’re talking about a guy who played with Mike Conley and Greg Oden in a losing effort against Joakim Noah and the Florida Gators.  That age and experience is certainly paying off for the Buckeyes right now.  Behind the efforts and leadership of the Cleveland VASJ alum, the Buckeyes knocked off Illinois 89-70 last night in Columbus.

In a tough stretch including losses to Wisconsin and Purdue after becoming the #1 team in the nation, Lighty has provided the steady hand.  The Buckeyes appeared again to be especially susceptible to the long ball on Tuesday night in Columbus.  The Buckeyes had a fifteen point lead at halftime 47-32, but the Illini bombed in eight three-pointers, four of which were knocked down by Mike Tisdale*.   [Read more...]

Who would you rather have as a college freshman: Oden or Sullinger?

The first time I saw Jared Sullinger play in person was at the McDonald’s All American game this past year.

Maybe because it was an All Star game, maybe because I was sitting in the press box six thousand feet above the court, or maybe because he hadn’t yet fell under the tutelage of Thad Matta, I walked away not really as impressed as I thought I’d be for some reason.

Harrison Barnes, I was convinced, was far and away the best player on the court that day.  I thought Sullinger was good obviously, but he didn’t strike me then as being great.

I was wrong initially regarding Sullinger though (time will tell on Barnes) but at this point it’s clear to not only me but anybody who watches five minutes of a Buckeyes hoops game that Jared Sullinger is a flat-out beast.

The second time I saw him play in person was last week, when I traveled down to Columbus to watch the Buckeyes beat Penn State and grab the number one spot vacated by Duke’s loss earlier in that week.

My eyes were on Sullinger for just about every minute he was on the court, and I was blown away. [Read more...]

Cavaliers Preview #39: Cavs at Blazers

LeBron BlazersCleveland Cavaliers (28-10)
at Portland Trail Blazers (23-15)
Rose Garden, Portland, OR
Sunday, January 10, 2010
9:00 PM ET
WTAM 1100 AM, ESPN/HD

The Cavaliers will look to get back to even ground on this Western Conference road trip this evening with yet another appearance on ESPN. Playing in Portland where the Trail Blazers defeated the NBA-leading Los Angeles Lakers on Friday night, it will certainly be a fun one to watch. In terms of style of play, these two teams are relatively similar with their efficient offenses and slow-paced games relying upon good mid-range shooting. In terms of health however, these are the exact polar opposites as the Trail Blazers will be missing five rotation players and three more are listed as probable for tonight.

Fortunately, the Cavs have avoided the major injury bug with only a few missed games here are there for Shaq, Andy and now Jamario Moon. Portland gave Cleveland a test at home earlier this season when Juwan Howard appeared 15 years younger, but who knows who could step up for either team tonight. Huge opportunity here for the Cavaliers to get their feet back on the ground with a solid nationally televised performance.

Braylon Jets Catch“[Braylon] Edwards looked like exactly what rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez needs to carry the Jets to a playoff berth. A 6′3″, 215-pound, athletic receiver with a Pro Bowl background will instill a lot of confidence in a young quarterback. Sanchez looked for Edwards early and often Monday night and the pair looked to have some sort of chemistry. Which is amazing since this was Braylon’s first week with the Jets. It makes you wonder why Edwards went into hiding all those months ago?” [Rumors and Rants]

B.J. Mullens Declares Eligibility for NBADL

NCAA Siena Ohio St BasketballLast season, the front court of the ultimately NIT-bound Ohio State Buckeyes featured a seven-foot big man by the name of Kosta Koufos.  A native of Canton, Ohio, Koufos had a reasonably successful season, averaging 14 points and seven rebounds per game and was actually named the NIT MVP (yes, that exists) after leading the Buckeyes to the “title.”

Koufos, a freshman at the time, then decided that his stay in Columbus was going to come to an end and declared eligibility for the NBA draft.  You know that things aren’t all they are cracked up to be when Clevelanders are adamant against drafting players from Ohio State in any sport, but such was the case with Koufos and the Cavaliers having a late pick in the first round.  Danny Ferry chose J.J. Hickson and Koufos wound up in the hands of the Utah Jazz.  And after 48 games this season, the Jazz have opted to send Koufos to the Utah Flash – the team’s Developmental League franchise.

And after a season of nine points and five rebounds per game, this year’s freshman big man, B.J. Mullens, believes that he too is ready follow his predecessors footsteps and take the leap to the next level.  The Columbus Dispatch reports that Mullens will be the latest one-and-done of the Ohio State Buckeyes as he declared his eligibility for the NBA.

“While I’m on the topic of timeout promotions, I feel like I should address the epidemic that seems to have spread to every school in the Big Ten. I’m talking of course of the incessant and unwavering desire of fans to get a t-shirt during the t-shirt toss. I’m not sure if it’s the fact that you are getting something for free or if it provides you a perfect opportunity to show your date how much of a man you are because you can catch a wrapped up t-shirt thrown by a mascot with an oversized nut for a head, but something about the t-shirt toss gets you going. And I respect that, even if I don’t fully understand it. It’s just strange to me to see people who are otherwise quiet and reserved suddenly want a t-shirt so badly that they don’t care if they push over that seven year old kid who’s got those Pokemon shoes that light up when he walks.” [Mark Titus/ClubTrillion]

From the Katzenmoyer School Of Common Sense

Greg Oden: Mental GiantWhile the Ohio State Buckeyes are entering the final four of the National Invitation Tournament, former Buckeye big man Greg Oden is apparently playing in his own game.  ESPN is reporting that the most recent first overall draft selection – who has missed the entire season after microfracture surgery, mind you – suited up for a pick-up game at a local fitness facility.  And for some reason, the Blazers aren’t too thrilled.

“I know he is excited to be moving again, but as I talked to him about it he said ‘Coach, I promise I wasn’t running hard …’. And I was like — ‘I really don’t care’,”‘ McMillan said. “The thing is, we were surprised. So we let him know that he doesn’t need to be there. We have plenty of workout equipment and gym space at our facility.” [Read more...]

OSU Hoops: The Team To Watch?

Ohio StateYesterday, ESPN’s Pat Forde broke down the major conferences, discussing things like “The Team to Beat,” or which team could be possibly “losing it.”  While it comes as no surprise that the team “losing it” is one Indiana University, following the loss of Kelvin Sampson, the “Team to watch” definitely caught my eye:

Team to watch: Ohio State (24). The Buckeyes shot themselves back into NCAA tournament contention with a big home sweep of Purdue and Michigan State to end the regular season. They get another shot at the Spartans on a neutral court Friday with plenty of bubble-related motivation.
