Another Giants receiver could be out against Browns

Earlier in the week we talked about the likelihood of Hakeem Nicks suiting up for the Giants. Now his replacement, Ramses Barden, might be doubtful too with a concussion.

“He complained of a headache and asked if he could be evaluated,” Coughlin said, via the team. “They sent him for the evaluation yesterday. I think a lot of the symptoms were okay, but there was enough there to slow him down. He is on the (concussion) protocol.”

So the Browns secondary might get a much-needed break in having to watch Victor Cruz and a bunch of guys further down the depth chart. If Nicks and Barden can’t go, that removes the second and third most receiving yards on the team from the roster that will face the Browns. The next group of names on the depth chart are Domenik Hixon, Reuben Randle and Jerrel Jernigan.

Interesting, though, that the NFL and concussions have at least gotten to the point that a player was willing to ask to be evaluated and at least as far as we know, hasn’t been ostracized by teammates or team staff.

Giants receiver Nicks in doubt for Browns game

Is it the foot, or is it the knee? Well, both, I guess. Nicks had a foot problem originally that the Giants were waiting to heal. In the meantime, his knee has apparently started to swell. The Browns will face another team without Joe Haden this week as they face off against the New York Giants, but as the week goes it seems more and more likely that the Browns won’t have to face receiver Hakeem Nicks in that passing attack.

But it’s a knee problem that concerns them now, when the wide receiver experienced swelling after running for the first time in a week. It’s cost him two straight games, and his status for this week is uncertain.

In addition, Eli Manning didn’t have the best day against the Eagles in a loss this past weekend, but that’s all relative when talking about a two-time Super Bowl winner. Manning still had over 300 yards through the air and helped put Domenik Hixon and Victor Cruz over 100 yards each. So Nicks or not, the Browns should still have their hands full in the Haden-less secondary.

Violent Hits Are Pretty Much Banned by NFL Rules

Last night watching Monday Night Football there were a lot of questions after a violent hit by Isa Abdul-Quddus on Hakeem Nicks was flagged for a 15-yard penalty.  Some people think that it shouldn’t have been a penalty.  Most notable among those people is Jon Gruden who claimed pretty flatly that he didn’t think it was a penalty.  At home, many (including this dork) were rewinding and examining the hit with their DVRs to see exactly what happened with a Zapruder-like level of detail.  I could see a lot of people working hard to find ways that it wasn’t a penalty.  Problem being that this iteration of the NFL is intent on looking at plays that result in ultra-violence in an attempt to justify throwing a flag not the opposite.

The NFL fan desperately wants to see a shoulder make contact first in attempt to prove that the referee was wrong.  It is an effort in vain though because the NFL has written the rules in such a way that they want referees to use their discretion to justify flags on any play that even approximates the hit that Abdul-Quddus put on Hakeem Nicks.  We learned this last year with T.J. Ward vs. Jordan Shipley.  The game has changed.  Just get used to it.  If you don’t believe me, check out the rules. [Read more...]

Perhaps we haven’t given the Nard-Dawg enough credit: “According to a source familiar with the situation, the Giants no longer see any hope of acquiring … Cleveland receiver [Braylon Edwards] and are moving forward with their plans to take a receiver early in the NFL draft. The sticking point still appears to be GM Jerry Reese’s refusal to part with the Giants’ first-round pick and the Browns’ refusal to take anything less. It’s pretty much been that way since Reese and Browns GM George Kokinis first talked about Edwards in February, but until very recently there was at least some optimism inside the Giants’ organization that one of the two sides would blink. Reese has no plans to blink, the source said, and the Giants are now convinced that Kokinis won’t either.” [Ralph Vacchiano/NY Daily News]

If we don’t land Crabree with the fifth-overall, “”There are some good receivers who will go late first and in the second round,” he said. “I really like Hakeem Nicks [North Carolina]. He could slip into the second round because he runs only a 4.55, but I like his size, his hands and he’s the kind of guy who would fit with the Browns because I believe he’s close to NFL ready.” [Terry Pluto/Plain Dealer]
