Box Score: Orioles 4, Indians 3

The Tribe’s miserable weekend continued on Sunday afternoon at Progressive Field as they dropped the third game of their four-game series against the Orioles. Zach Britton allowed just four hits in six shutout innings and it appeared the O’s would cruise to a 4-0 win. The offense was nowhere to be found for eight innings and it looked like they would be shutout for the third time since the start of the second half just over a week ago.

But Indians made plenty of noise in their last at-bat. Carlos Santana took a Luis Ayala offering just over the right field wall to end the shutout with a two-run homer. That forced Buck Showalter to make the call for MLB saves leader Jim Johnson, who promptly gave up a double to Shelley Duncan high off the left field wall. Duncan started watching it, trotting around first as it looked like he expected it to go out. After stumbling around first, he just got in under the tag at second and was knocked in on Travis Hafner single down the left field line. The rally would die, however, with pinch-runner Jack Hannahan on second.

The Tribe will try to stave off a sweep on Monday afternoon.

The Indians returned to Cleveland for their first home series of the second half. But it was an ugly night at Progressive Field on Friday, as starter Derek Lowe’s struggles continued. The O’s hammered the sinkerballer for nine earned runs in just three innings work. Old friend Jim Thome blasted on of his patented homers to right off Lower — his first since joining Baltimore. It was never close after Lowe’s implosion.

Box Score: Astros 7, Indians 1

The Indians dropped their second straight to the Astros to lose their interleague series in Houston. As was the case on Saturday, the Tribe got on the board first with a run in the second. But it would be all Houston from there on, as they poured in on in the late innings to cruise to another easy win. Derek Lowe kept it close, giving up three runs but both Nick Hagadone and Esmil Rogers gave up two-run homers in the eighth that blew it open to 7-1.

Box Score: Indians 2, Astros 0

The Cleveland Indians began their three-city road trip on Friday night with a series-opening win in Houston. Despite four walks, Ubaldo Jimenez had another solid start. He struck out eight ‘Stros in 6.2 innings of scoreless work, and the bullpen took if from there against the lowly Houston lineup. Vinnie Pestano came on to clean up in the eighth and Chris Perez converted his 23rd save of the year, striking out the side in the bottom of the ninth.

The Indians dropped their first game without the troika of Asdrubal Cabrera, Carlos Santana, and Travis Hafner, who are all on the shelf for a variety of reasons. But it wasn’t an unimpressive lineup that led to the loss, as the Tribe’s pitchers were shelled by the White Sox. Derek Lowe’s regression came in a swift and thunderous swoop, as the sinkerballer gave up 8 earned runs in just 2.1 innings. The bat of Jason Kipnis made it a game as the Tribe offense battled back into it, but another blow-up inning by Joe Smith and two defensive miscues in the 7th put the game out of reach.

Box Score: White Sox 9, Indians 3

Riding the high of a three-game sweep of the Tigers, the Cleveland Indians came down to earth quickly on Friday night. The White Sox shelled the Tribe in a 9-3 disaster of a game. More important than the loss were the injuries to both Asdrubal Cabrera and Carlos Santana. Cabrera left the game  with tightness in his hamstring and Santana left the game shortly after that when he took a foul ball off his facemask. It was an ugly night.

Box Score: Marlins 5, Indians 3

After all the drama of the past 12 hours, the Indians and Marlins actually played a game, wrapping up their interleague series on Sunday afternoon. The Marlins took the finale by a 5-3 margin. A three-run 8th inning rally turned out to be crucial for the Fish, as Nick Hagadone and Jeremy Accardo were roughed up. The Tribe would add two runs in the 9th, but the Miami insurance runs made it too little, too late.

Box Score: Indians 2, Marlins 0

The Indians came back to get Game 2 of their interleague series against the Miami Marlins on Saturday afternoon, winning 2-0. Jeanmar Gomez was spectacular for the Tribe, pitching 6.1 innings of shutout ball before handing it over to a bullpen that kept the Fish off the board. Asdrubal Cabrera’s bomb to right proved to be the difference in the 4th inning, but Jason Kipnis added some insurance when he brought home Shelley Duncan on a sac fly one inning later.

Box Score: Marlins 3, Indians 2

The Indians four-game winning streak was snapped on Friday night in an interleague opening loss to the Miami Marlins. The Fish took the one-run lead in the 8th without getting a hit. Bryan Petersen drew a lead-off walk against Tony Sipp and was sacrificed over to second by Jose Reyes. He advanced to third on a throwing error by Joe Smith, and was then knocked in on a Hanley Ramirez sacrifice fly. That was enough for the Marlins, who clinched the series opening 3-2 win.
