The Boots: Cavs Future, 2011 NBA Draft, Basketball Parity, Carmelo’s Knicks

The Boots are my method of applauding or criticizing various newsworthy events in the world of sports. The word “Boot” refers to a torturous childhood nickname, and thus, now serves as my own personal sports writing payback. More of these features can be found with the University of Dayton’s Flyer News, and topics for future articles can be sent to tips@waitingfornextyear.com.

Boot Up: Building Blocks – There’s no question in my mind that last week’s trade with the Los Angeles Clippers assured the Cleveland Cavaliers of a more straight-forward rebuild process. Yes, you can go ahead and read Kelly Dwyer’s drivel all you want, but you really can’t afford to contradict yourself so many times.

Dwyer makes the point that Mo Williams should have been traded months ago, but then he’s overweight anyway. He says Baron Davis is a team cancer, but that he will actually be a major aspect of the Cavs’ future. That’s my criticism for Dwyer because it’s simply obvious that Davis is not a long-term solution to anything here in Cleveland. [Read more...]

Developing News: Clippers Trade Not Yet Official… More Picks Coming?

(The LA Times later reported this morning that Baron Davis did indeed pass his physical. He is expected to play for Cleveland tonight.)

The recent trade between the Los Angeles Clippers and Cleveland Cavaliers still has not been declared official as of Sunday at 9 a.m., according to multiple news sources.

Reports, including those from ESPNLA.com, indicate that the MRI knee results from new Cavs point guard Baron Davis are potentially taking a little longer to process than normal. While the Clippers are currently not worried about the trade passing completely by today’s 5 p.m. deadline, rumors are circulating that Cleveland could be in position to request more pieces in the deal.

Ben Maller was one of many outlets to cite from sources saying that the Cavs still might ask for additional draft picks in the final workings of this deal. Stay tuned for any more updates as the day continues here at WFNY. Mo Williams and Jamario Moon supposedly passed their physicals Friday, but had not played in the past two L.A. games because of this final complication with the trade.

Chris Grant Talks About Cavs/Clippers Trade

Is it possible for one of these press conferences to start on time?

Chris Grant stepped to the podium at about 20 minutes after 12:00 PM when his press conference was supposed to start.  He joked with someone just arriving, asking them, “Should we wait to get started?”  After the laughter subsided Grant got to the business of the Cavs’ recent move trading Mo Williams and Jamario Moon to the Los Angeles Clippers for Baron Davis and the Clippers’ unprotected 2011 first round draft pick.  Make no mistake.  That pick is unprotected.

There was a lot of talk this morning that maybe the pick was protected somehow.  It had to be, right?  What team would be willing to give up a first round pick in order to get Mo Williams, Jamario Moon and free themselves of Baron Davis’ contract that pays him around $14 million and a bit more per season until the end of 2013.  Ultimately, it seems the Cavaliers’ willingness to take that contract was the key to getting it done.  It will be a very expensive draft pick for Dan Gilbert when it’s all said and done. Cavaliers Take Major Step In Rebuilding Process With Mo Williams Trade

Not many teams have had much sympathy for the Cleveland Cavaliers this season. After a couple seasons of racking up the NBA’s best record and players dancing on the bench as the team executed blow out after blow out, teams were licking their chops this year to exact some revenge on the LeBron-less Cavaliers.

When it comes to the Los Angeles Clippers, though, they seemed to be feeling quite charitable towards our beloved Cavaliers. First, they were kind enough to give the Cavaliers the win to snap the infamous losing streak. Now, it appears they have decided to give the Cavaliers a 2011 top-10 draft pick.

The move comes as somewhat of a surprise, as many of us were bracing ourselves for the Cavaliers to stand pat and not make any moves. As is often the case with the Cavaliers, though, moves come out of nowhere when you least expect them. [Read more...]

Cavaliers Send Video of Dirk Nowitzki “Punch” to NBA Officials

With 2:35 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, Cavaliers point guard Ramon Sessions was the recipient of a questionable foul at the hands of Dallas Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki.

Though two free throws were awarded to the point guard of the Wine and Gold, Cavaliers head coach Byron Scott – and the rest of his coaching staff – feel like the punishment did not suit the crime as Nowitzki appeared to throw a punch at the point guard.

During the play in question, the seven-foot power forward was guarding Sessions on the right side of the floor.  Sessions cut back towards the center of the court, initiating a bit of contact.  Nowitzki apparently took offense to the first bit of contact and swung his left fist in the guard’s direction – perhaps in frustration – ultimately drawing whistles from several officials.

Cavs Set Single Season Consecutive Loss Record

The Cavaliers lost to the Portland Trail Blazers last night to set a new single season NBA consecutive loss record.  It was the 24th consecutive loss for a team that has not won a game since December 18th.  They have lost an absurd 34 out of 35 games.  They did not blow a lead in the fourth quarter as they did in Memphis on Friday but the Cavs were once again competitive throughout this contest.  The Cavaliers defense simply cannot get stops at the end of games when they need to (this happens at the beginning and middle of games as well).  There 3 point defense has plagued them all season and it was the driving reason why they lost again last night and broke the record.

Byron Scott Says Certain Players Still Lost on Offense

The Cavaliers are 41 games into the regular season and there are still players who do not understand the team’s offensive schemes.

As amazing as that sounds, Byron Scott says that there are members of his team that still do not grasp what needs to be done on the offensive end.  With Wednesday night’s game within reach, Scott says that the inability to execute in crunch time led to the eight-point defeat.

“We still have guys who don’t understand what we’re doing offensively,” said Scott. “Like I told them today, there’s no reason why that should be because most of these guys have been here all year long, so they should understand what we’re doing at all times.”

Improved Cavs Defense Offers a Sign of Hope in Loss to Suns

Seeking to ramp up the defensive pressure, Byron Scott’s Cavaliers caught a glimpse of what hard-nosed defense can do for a team, regardless of talent level or injuries.

After allowing the Suns to run a verifiable lay-up line in the first half, converting on 52.2 percent of their shots, the young and hobbled Wine and Gold managed to trim a 17-point deficit down to three with just three minutes to go in the game.  Though the final outcome was a 106-98 loss, the Cavaliers managed to trim such a sizable point differential via defense, holding the Suns to just 41.1 percent shooting and forcing 10 turnovers.

“I thought in the first half our guys still looked a little confused on some of the things we wanted to change and some of the things we wanted to do but in the second half, after coming in at halftime and seeing (what we were doing on film), I thought they did a much better job,” said Byron Scott postgame. “Again, that’s the part we have to build on and that is exactly what I told them; not taking a couple of steps back or a step back, we have to take a couple of steps forward come Friday night.”

Cavs Offbeat: On Byron Scott’s Plans to “Tinker”

Six in one, a half dozen in the other.

Recent changes within the Cavaliers starting lineup have taken two of the team’s leading scorers (Daniel Gibson and Antawn Jamison) off of the bench and placed them in the starting lineup.  Akin to rearranging the deck chairs on a sinking Titanic, the struggling JJ Hickson and Joey Graham were relegated to the bench while teammate and opening day starter Jamario Moon hit the inactive list.

But following the Cavaliers 106-77 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder, head coach Byron Scott called out his recently depleted reserve unit (“slaughtered” was his exact term) for a 19-1 third-quarter run that would be the proverbial dagger in the evening for the Wine and Gold.  After the starting unit brought the game back to within 10, the second unit could provide little in terms of a roadblock as the Thunder never looked back.

Following the contest, Scott said that more changes could be on the way with the reserve unit, only he used some possibly Freudian words to describe them.

Cavs Offbeat: Rookie Doughnut Duty is Alive and Well

A ritual made public by former Cavs guard (and then embedded correspondent) Delonte West on The Jim Rome Show continues through the season of New Expression.

Despite all of the change that has occurred in the hallowed halls of Quicken Loans Arena, the rookie players of the Wine and Gold will continue to supply Krispy Kreme doughnuts to the entire 15-man roster after game-day shootaround.

That’s right – three boxes of a dozen, warm Krispy Kreme doughnuts.  Thirty-six doughnuts for 15 men plus a few coaches and staff members.  The new breakfast of champions?

While We’re Waiting…ESPN Cheap Shots, Colt Optimism, Cavs Rotations

‘Dudes’?: “As if ‘The Decision’ weren’t brutal enough for Cavs fans, ESPN is throwing another gut punch…Scene two, labeled “Unamazing Cavaliers” and “King James no more!,” carries an image of LeBron James in a Miami Heat uniform walking away from his crumpled number 23 Cavs jersey in the garbage can.  The Cavs are the only team in the preview issue not illustrated by an image of a current player or owner.  Gary Belsky, ESPN the Magazine’s editor in chief, said his staff was sympathetic to Cavs fans, but when ESPN writers and editors presented story lines for the season to Marvel artists, they decided this was the way to tell it.  ‘Honestly,’ he said, ‘we talked a lot about that and we didn’t see it as kicking the city and Cavs fans while they’re down.’  In fact, Belsky promised a special-edition image if the Cavs surpass ESPN’s expectations.  ‘Nothing would make us happier if that would be the case,” he said. “If they get past 40 wins, I will go back to Marvel and say, ‘Dudes, we were wrong.’” [Bill Lubinger/Cleveland.com]

Cavs Offbeat: Embracing LeBron’s Old Lockers

Though likely unintentional, the metaphor is surreal.  The two lockers that were once occupied by LeBron James in the Cavaliers locker room – two, four-foot wide abodes huddled in the corner near the trainer’s room – are now filled by three individuals.

The spot that was once filled by dozens of Nike hightops, a few different pairs of Beats by Dre headphones and usually surrounded by at least 20 media members is now the home of Jamario Moon, who has the spot against the wall, with rookies Tasmin Mitchell and Manny Harris taking the next stall over.  [Read more...]

While We’re Waiting… Browns’ Struggles, Moon vs Jawad, and Thome’s Future

Deja vu, all over again: “This season, I hate to say it, might as well be over already. I have shown myself to be a less-than-sterling guesser of the winners of games during the first two weeks, but one thing that takes no guessing is that the Browns are in serious, serious trouble.

What was expected to be — perhaps — a 2-0 start to the season, or possibly 1-1, has dissolved into a nightmarish case of deja vu wherein the Browns led both of their games at halftime, 14-10, and then both weeks managed to get shut out in the second half and to have lost two games by a total of five points.

So near yet so far.” [Richard Bauer/SB Nation]

Jawad Williams Signs Cavs Tender, Eyenga to D-League?

Just last week, we pondered the future of Jawad Williams with the Cleveland Cavaliers.  Not even five days later, Williams’ agent tells the Plain Dealer that his client will be suiting up for the Wine and Gold during the 2010-11 season.

A restricted free agent, Williams had reportedly been hoping to land a multi-year contract with the Cavaliers.  Even going as far as working out with other NBA teams and being recruited by former teammate LeBron James in Miami, Williams put his demands aside for the time being and accepted the team’s qualifying offer of $1.02 million.

Though the contract is not fully guaranteed, Williams will immediately enter the starting small forward talks, likely sharing time with Jamario Moon and the newly acquired Joey Graham.  However, one swing player who this contract may negatively impact in terms of his minutes with the Cavaliers is last season’s first-round draft selection Christian Eyenga.  [Read more...]

NBA Free Agency: Cavs Ink Joey Graham to a Two-Year Deal

After working out a handful of different players, the Cavaliers have agreed to terms with veteran forward Joey Graham. The two sides agreed to a two-year contract that is speculated to be near the veteran minimum.

The twin brother of former Cavalier Stephen Graham, Joey has spent five years in the league, averaging approximately 16 minutes per contest. After four years with the Toronto Raptors, who selected him with the 16th overall draft pick in 2005, Graham was a member of the Denver Nuggets where he would finish his stint in a playoff loss where he produced 21 points and 10 rebounds. For his career, the 28-year-old Graham has averaged 6.0 points and 2.9 rebounds with excellent percentages.

Byron Scott Says Antawn Jamison’s Role is Undefined

Once thought to be the missing piece of a championship contender, forward Antawn Jamison could be looking at a role off of the bench with the 2010-11 Cleveland Cavaliers.  Newly hired head coach Byron Scott spoke with NBATV’s Rick Kamla during Tuesday’s opening game of the Cavaliers Las Vegas Summer League, and it sounds like the 33-year-old Jamison may be featured as a sixth man for the third time in his 13-year career.

NBA Trade Rumors: Delonte West and Jamario Moon to Phoenix?

Few things are certain in life, but one occurrence that continues to gain more and more steam into this echelon is an annual trade rumor featuring the Phoenix Suns.  Paul Coro of the Arizona Republic reports that the Suns have been in talks with the Cleveland Cavaliers surrounding a deal that would send Delonte West (and his very favorable contract) along with athletic forward Jamario Moon to the Suns for combo guard Leandro Barbosa.

With Amar’e Stoudemire agreeing to terms with the New York Knicks, the Suns have seemingly turned into a cost-cutting mode.  With West’s contract only guaranteeing $500,000 this season and Jamario Moon’s contract expiring at season’s end, the Suns would rid themseleves of a contract that is set to pay Barbosa nearly $15 million over the next two seasons.  [Read more...]

Breakin’ Down Mike Brown

Breaking down the Cavs/Celtics Game Four a little deeper, Craig and I began a conversation centering around Mike Brown and whether he is or isn’t to blame for the troubles the Cavaliers are having from game to game.

TD: Craig, go ahead and defend your boy Mike Brown. I have been a defender when he has been bashed this series, but yesterday, his substitution patterns were completely irrationals

Craig: I started out bashing Mike Brown in this series. The Zydrunas experiment was understandable, and then Brown responded by not playing him any more. Jamario Moon gets minutes. My biggest problems are no longer his subs but the play of the players. Delonte, Mo, and others didn’t play well enough yesterday. There was no magic bullet for Mike Brown to fire yesterday. Did Jamario Moon earn a playoff spot? “Cavaliers forward Jamario Moon is a former member of the Harlem Globetrotters, recently won the team’s “Good Guy” award and would easily be named Class Clown if the NBA gave out superlatives like a graduating senior class.  And while his playing time has been a bit of a roller coaster throughout the 2009-10 season, the last two weeks have provided Moon with an excellent opportunity to showcase his talents. [...] Given that the small forward position in Cleveland is not exactly up for grabs, [he and Jawad Williams] appear to be in battle for a rotation spot come postseason.” [Me/Fox Sports Ohio]
