Your 2010 Playoffs NBA All-Animal Team

The NBA Playoffs are a lot of fun. We get all sorts of great play, some chance at upsets (though not much), and we get more exposure to some funny inanities that I appreciate.

One such thing: player nicknames. A couple of weeks ago, Sebastian Telfair made his debut for the Cavs, and I photoshopped the head of a Bass on him because of his nickname “Bassy”. I thought this was the end of my photoshop fun. For those of you who know me even remotely, you would have told me that it was not.

With the playoffs going on, Twitter has been buzzing about the NBA. A mistake in announcing of Spurs rookie Dejuan Blair’s name resulted in the awesome Tweetmeme DejuanBear. Inspired by this, here’s the 2010 NBA Playoffs All-Animal Team (Spoiler: Bassy is not on the team).

Orlando 101, Cleveland 95: Cavs Drop Third Straight

90043664FM028_CAVS_MAGICSolid quarters of basketball are what any fan likes to see.  The down side to these solid quarters comes during the rare occassion when they are sandwiched between two subpar periods of play.  The Cavaliers were outscored 52-38 within the first and fourth quarters on Sunday afternoon.  The result was a six-point loss on the road at the hands of the Orlando Magic, the team’s third in a row.

Entering the fourth quarter with a one-point lead, the Cavaliers saw their chances evaporate as foul trouble finally caught up to them inside, LeBron James was held to one point and the Magic simply did not let up.  Five Orlando players finished with double digit point while the bulk of the production came from three Cavaliers in James and his teammates Shaquille O’Neal and Antawn Jamison.

Similar to the beginning of this season with O’Neal, the team is going through an integration period with the newly acquired Jamison.

Cavaliers Preview Game #54: Magic at Cavs

Well, it was certainly fun while it lasted. This extended home stand will be ending shortly, but what is already over is the stretch of playing mediocre teams. Tonight begins a stretch of games against Orlando, Denver, at Charlotte, at Orlando, New Orleans, at Boston, and at Toronto to close out the month of February. The Magic struggled for a while earlier this year after their blazing hot start, but they’re beginning to get the heat back as they have begun to play some really great basketball. Delonte West will be a gametime decision, although Brian Windhorst seems to think there are some indications he will play, which makes me think he will. It would be nice if he could, because Orlando is a team that will flat out punish you if you’re not tough on your perimeter defense against them. This is going to be a great test tonight to see where this Cavaliers team really stands.   [Read more...]

Dan Gilbert Sounds Off on Mo’s All-Star Snub

When Allen Iverson was named a starter for the All-Star team along side fellow shooting guard Dwyane Wade, many people knew that it would be very difficult for all of the deserving point guards to make the Eastern Conference team.  The coaches had their say, and New Jersey’s Devin Harris made it along side Orlando’s Jameer Nelson.  But once Nelson went down with a season-ending injury, many felt that this opened a door for David Stern to name Mo Williams – a point guard – to team.

After yesterday’s news that Boston got their third player in Ray Allen – not a point guard – you can understand the frustration around Cleveland.

When Ben Wallace called the original snub a “shamockery,” (a clever blend of sham and mockery), many had a good laugh.  When LeBron James dropped the “disrespect” card, many got out their collective violins and used this as yet another reason why LeBron could bolt in 2010.  But after the second snub, team owner Dan Gilbert jumped all over it with an email to the Plain Dealer. Magic 99, Cavaliers 88 [box]

NBA.com calls last night’s Magic win over the Cavaliers a “statement game.”  I will respectfully disagree.  Take out Orlando’s starting big man and shooting guard and then come tell me that Orlando made a “statement” by beating the Cavaliers at home.

But was it an ugly, dreadful second half of basketball played by the Cavs?  Absolutely.

In my opinion, we can peg last night’s loss to three things:

1) Lazy second half offense
2) Letting the officials get under their skin
3) An absurd run of accurate shooting by the Magic, ultimately resulting in a lead that was simply insurmountable.

We’ll break these down one-by-one:

Whether or not the Browns improve much this off-season, it has to help us that Baltimore is losing a few of their key pieces.  Right?  “Baltimore has already lost its defensive coordinator Rex Ryan and linebacker coach Mike Pettine to the New York Jets. The Ravens also lost George Kokinis, who is the new general manager of the Cleveland Browns. And with so many pending free agents, the Ravens expect to lose a few key players as well. This is one of the few downsides to success in the NFL, and the Ravens will have to work their way through it.” [James Walker/ESPN]
