While We’re Waiting…Tribe Rallies In 8th and Buckeyes Forefeit Some Cash

Tribe rolls in 8th to beat Twins:  “The Tribe’s lineup went dark during Masterson’s time on the hill, but an eighth-inning rally helped the Indians pull off a 3-2 victory over the Twins in the opener of this three-game set. That had Masterson smiling in the wake of what marked the 14th win this year for Cleveland in its last at-bat at home.

“They’ve shown that they’ll score runs at some point in time,” Masterson said. “Hey, I’ll take it whenever they come. A ‘W’ is a ‘W’ for the team.”

And, right now, the Indians need as many as possible.  The win over the rival Twins allowed the Indians (59-57) to hold their position within the American League Central standings. The first-place Tigers defeated the Orioles on Friday, leaving Cleveland’s deficit fixed at three games for the time being.

“We have to control our own destiny,” Indians manager Manny Acta said. “That way we don’t have to be worrying about what the other clubs are doing. We have to take care of what’s in front of us.”

After being handcuffed for seven innings by Twins right-hander Carl Pavano, the Indians broke through for two critical runs in the eighth. Travis Hafner singled off of Pavano, ending the pitcher’s evening with one out in the frame. Carlos Santana and Matt LaPorta followed with run-scoring doubles off of lefty Glen Perkins to put the Tribe up for good, 3-2.”  [Jordan Bastian / MLB.com] [Read more...]

Cavs Offbeat: On Byron Scott’s Plans to “Tinker”

Six in one, a half dozen in the other.

Recent changes within the Cavaliers starting lineup have taken two of the team’s leading scorers (Daniel Gibson and Antawn Jamison) off of the bench and placed them in the starting lineup.  Akin to rearranging the deck chairs on a sinking Titanic, the struggling JJ Hickson and Joey Graham were relegated to the bench while teammate and opening day starter Jamario Moon hit the inactive list.

But following the Cavaliers 106-77 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder, head coach Byron Scott called out his recently depleted reserve unit (“slaughtered” was his exact term) for a 19-1 third-quarter run that would be the proverbial dagger in the evening for the Wine and Gold.  After the starting unit brought the game back to within 10, the second unit could provide little in terms of a roadblock as the Thunder never looked back.

Following the contest, Scott said that more changes could be on the way with the reserve unit, only he used some possibly Freudian words to describe them.

Raptors Deliver Harsh Dose of Reality to Cavaliers, Cleveland Fans

It’s an entirely new feeling for Cleveland basketball fans. Overjoyed by the team’s surprise victory Wednesday night over the Boston Celtics, the Cavalier faithful fell right back down following a 101-81 loss to the Toronto Raptors Friday night.

In the start of what could be many painful games on the road, Toronto conquered the helpless Cavs in nearly every single facet of the game. Most notably, the absence of both Mo Williams and Anderson Varejao left Cleveland without two of their top starters and most consistent performers. Filling in Mo’s spot, new point guard Ramon Sessions struggled to consistently set up the offense, and although the Raptors are also projected to be one of the worst team’s in the Eastern Conference, they easily took advantage in front of the home court advantage.

While We’re Waiting…ESPN Cheap Shots, Colt Optimism, Cavs Rotations

‘Dudes’?: “As if ‘The Decision’ weren’t brutal enough for Cavs fans, ESPN is throwing another gut punch…Scene two, labeled “Unamazing Cavaliers” and “King James no more!,” carries an image of LeBron James in a Miami Heat uniform walking away from his crumpled number 23 Cavs jersey in the garbage can.  The Cavs are the only team in the preview issue not illustrated by an image of a current player or owner.  Gary Belsky, ESPN the Magazine’s editor in chief, said his staff was sympathetic to Cavs fans, but when ESPN writers and editors presented story lines for the season to Marvel artists, they decided this was the way to tell it.  ‘Honestly,’ he said, ‘we talked a lot about that and we didn’t see it as kicking the city and Cavs fans while they’re down.’  In fact, Belsky promised a special-edition image if the Cavs surpass ESPN’s expectations.  ‘Nothing would make us happier if that would be the case,” he said. “If they get past 40 wins, I will go back to Marvel and say, ‘Dudes, we were wrong.’” [Bill Lubinger/Cleveland.com]

While We’re Waiting… Browns’ Struggles, Moon vs Jawad, and Thome’s Future

Deja vu, all over again: “This season, I hate to say it, might as well be over already. I have shown myself to be a less-than-sterling guesser of the winners of games during the first two weeks, but one thing that takes no guessing is that the Browns are in serious, serious trouble.

What was expected to be — perhaps — a 2-0 start to the season, or possibly 1-1, has dissolved into a nightmarish case of deja vu wherein the Browns led both of their games at halftime, 14-10, and then both weeks managed to get shut out in the second half and to have lost two games by a total of five points.

So near yet so far.” [Richard Bauer/SB Nation]

Jawad Williams Signs Cavs Tender, Eyenga to D-League?

Just last week, we pondered the future of Jawad Williams with the Cleveland Cavaliers.  Not even five days later, Williams’ agent tells the Plain Dealer that his client will be suiting up for the Wine and Gold during the 2010-11 season.

A restricted free agent, Williams had reportedly been hoping to land a multi-year contract with the Cavaliers.  Even going as far as working out with other NBA teams and being recruited by former teammate LeBron James in Miami, Williams put his demands aside for the time being and accepted the team’s qualifying offer of $1.02 million.

Though the contract is not fully guaranteed, Williams will immediately enter the starting small forward talks, likely sharing time with Jamario Moon and the newly acquired Joey Graham.  However, one swing player who this contract may negatively impact in terms of his minutes with the Cavaliers is last season’s first-round draft selection Christian Eyenga.  [Read more...]

Cavaliers Waiting on Jawad Williams as Training Camp Approaches

Don’t look now, basketball fans, but the Cleveland Cavaliers open training camp in just a couple weeks. In fact, for those of you who follow the Cavs players on Twitter, you may have noticed that several players are already in town and working out at Cleveland Clinic Courts. The air is beginning to cool, the leaves are turning, football is on TV, and basketball will finally be here before we know it. This is one of the most exciting times of the year.

For the Cavaliers, before they can head into camp, there is still one unanswered question that is lingering. Will Jawad Williams be a part of this team in 2010-11? The restricted free agent small forward has yet to accept the qualifying offer the Cavaliers on the table for him, and time is running out for him to make up his mind on what he wants to do. LeBron James the Recruiter Targets Jawad Williams

Over the last two weeks, LeBron James has turned into an epic Voltron of Urban Myer, John Calipari and Korn Ferry International when it comes to recruiting players to join him in Miami.  Not long after locking up veterans Mike Miller and Zyrdunas Ilgauskas, James has reportedly set his sights on a younger player in Cleveland’s Jawad Williams.

Mike Brown sits ‘em down; Van Gundy, Howard disagree

The Cavaliers lost to the Indiana Pacers last night in what was, in all reality, a meaningless regular season NBA game. The Cavaliers top four scorers were held out of the game due to injury or rest. Shaquille O’ Neal continues to rehab and had last night’s game been a must win or an important playoff game, the big fella would have, in all likelihood, suited up. Antawn Jamison was held out after Luol Deng landed on his ankle in Chicago Thursday night. LeBron James and Mo Williams were inactive as well. The Cavaliers have two more regular season games left and we may see lineups comparable to what we saw last night. There is really no downside to holding your most important players out in what are meaningless games.

Please Step Away From the Ledge

Cavaliers Magic BasketballOK Cavs fans. I’m only going to say this once. Listen carefully.

This three game losing streak is not a big deal. Step away from the ledge, take a deep breath, and calm down.

After yesterday’s 101-95 loss in Orlando, many of you are ready to jump. Who can blame you? After all, you are a Cleveland fan and it is in our DNA to assume the worst and attempt to prepare for it. But please consider the following:

The three game losing streak came on the heels of a 13 game winning streak. If the Cavs had a 16-game run where they went 13-3, would any of you be worried? Nope. But since the three games came in a row, all of a sudden the sky is falling. Also, you cannot forget that the winning streak featured the longest home-stand the Cavs had had in five years. Grading The Cavaliers: Jawad Williams

Jawad WilliamsWhile the Cavaliers use the All-Star break to rest up (well most of them anyways) we thought it would be a good time to reflect on the season so far, and issue some grades. In addition, we will detail what the Cavaliers will need from each player in order to hoist some team hardware this summer. Next up?  Jawad Williams

Ok, full disclosure up front: As a UNC fan who has followed Jawad Williams from a local kid at St Ed going to my 2nd favorite university, to starting on an NCAA Championship team, to trying to essentially “walk on” to the Cavaliers, I have rooted unconditionally for Jawad to succeed. I try to limit my biases in writing, but I will fully admit that Jawad is one of my absolute favorite players in the NBA. So, fair warning. [Read more...]

Jawad WilliamsSpotlight on Jawad Williams: “Sometimes you’re misunderstood as arrogant when you’re really just quiet. Sometimes you’re seen as an undersized power forward when you’re just really a small forward trapped in a 6-foot-9 body. And sometimes you have to travel all the way around the world over the course of four years before you can come back to your hometown, play for the team you dreamt of starring for, alongside the good friend called the best anywhere, and then go home to your family and the gym where you first learned to love the game.

LeBron has MVP showing in 100-99 win over OKC

Thunder CavsThe Cavs were missing their first and second string PG, missed 20 of 40 free throw attempts,  and had 17 turnovers yet they somehow managed to improve to 26-1 when scoring 100 points in a game with a victory over the OKC Thunder.  LeBron was magnificent and carried the depleted roster in a vintage LBJ MVP performance.  He absolutely dominated the last minute of each half which buoyed the Cavaliers to victory.  At the end of the first half, he hustled down with about 35 seconds to play and hit a three to force a 2-for-1 exchange giving the Cavaliers the final shot – where he promptly drilled another 3 pointer to end the half.  A 7 point lead was immediately extended to 13 on the perfectly executed 2-for-1.  It was a crucial exchange as the Cavaliers came out asleep in the 3rd, giving up an inexcusable 35 points in the quarter which  in turn gave the Thunder a 1 point lead heading into the 4th.

Kevin Durant matched James for much of the second half and finished with 34 and 10.  The final minute of the game, however, belonged to the reigning MVP who willed the undermanned Cavs to victory.  As the Cavs gagged on free throw attempt after attempt, they found themselves down 1 with 35 seconds to go.  Lebron grabbed a rebound off a Russell Westbrook miss and immediately raced down to the offensive end looking to score a quick bucket without calling timeout.  With all 5 Thunder defenders focused on James, LeBron found Boobie Gibson who was wide open in transition.  Boobie, who had a largely ineffective game as the new starting PG, stepped up and hit the clutch three to give the Cavs a two point lead. OKC isolated Durant on the other end to try and tie the game.  KD drove to his left and got to the block only to be denied on highlight rejection by LeBron.  James was fouled and sank the icing 2 FTs for the win.  While James, who was one rebound away from a triple-double, and Durant were incredible throughout the game, those closing minutes of the first half and the game are what sealed the W and boost his MVP credentials.

What Happened to Boobie Gibson?

Boobie Gibson seemed to be coming around as a player early on this NBA season.  He was shooting incredibly well.  He was playing solid defense, which we all know is the only real way to guarantee yourself minutes on a Mike Brown-coached basketball team.  Then, all of a sudden, Boobie Gibson seemed to just disappear from the Cavs’ rotation.  And even stranger, he appears to have disappeared at a time when we all thought the Cavs would need him most, after Jamario Moon got hurt.

On January 5th when talking about the Moon injury to the ABJ’s George M. Thomas, Mike Brown even indicated that Boobie Gibson would be in the gameplan for minutes after Moon got injured with the abdominal strain.  Since that time, Gibson has played a total of 18 minutes over the course of six games, including 3 Did Not Play Coach’s Decisions in the box scores. Development at the Back End of the Roster

Jawad Williams

Last night’s 106-94 win in Portland was impressive enough on its own merit. Lebron James scored 31 of his 41 points in the first half. Anderson Varejao was all over the floor with his usual frenetic energy. Even Shaquille O’Neal enjoyed a flashback night, scoring 11 points and grabbing 11 boards with a plus/minus of +16. However, the unsung hero of the night came from an unexpected source.

Local product Jawad Williams. [Read more...]

Cavs 106, Blazers 94: Where LeBron vs Roy Happened

Lebron Different Colored Shoes Sam Forencich Getty ImagesIf you didn’t stay up to watch this one, you missed a pretty entertaining game. The game was much more in doubt than the final score indicates. LeBron finished the game with 41 points to best Brandon Roy’s 34. Those that went to bed at halftime might be wondering how LeBron scored only 10 points in the second half after 31 on perfect shooting in the first half. Chalk that up to some great defensive adjustments by the Blazers.

LeBron was deadly in that first half and Portland had seen enough. They trapped LeBron nearly every possession in the fourth quarter. LeBron did a good job of passing out of it, but the whole team was on the opposite side of him and so the defense could recover quickly. When passing out of a double team it isn’t always the first man that is the scorer, it’s the second or third swinging the ball around the court. Cleveland never found a way to get the second or third pass around the arc, and so they put the game on the shooting shoulders of Mo Williams, Delonte West and Jawad Williams. Guess which one had the most production in the waning minutes of this one? [Read more...]

Antawn Jamison and Leon Powe: Will They Ever Play Together for the Cavs?

29sCavs12.jpgThe calendar has recently turned to 2010 and the city of Cleveland is less than six months away from a possible doomsday occasion with the beginning of NBA free agency in July. This is arguably the last season of productivity for Zydrunas Ilgauskas and Shaquille O’Neal, meaning that even more changes will be coming next summer as well if those two players come off the books. This is the season however, where the Cavs need to step up and prove to their franchise savior that they are his best option towards winning an NBA title immediately.

Looking towards the rest of this season, the biggest thing that could affect this team for the playoffs and their ability to keep LeBron James for the future will be what they do on the trade market. There is slightly over a month left until the NBA trading deadline, and the Cavs have several assets that they will offer up for a difference maker alongside LBJ. The biggest rumor of late is sending Zydrunas Ilgauskas to Washington for veteran power forward Antawn Jamison. At 33 years old and with a hefty contract for the next two seasons, such a trade would limit the off-season possibilities for Cleveland in 2010 but would bring a third legitimate 20-point scoring threat to the roster.

Cavaliers Wizards BasketballBased on his record on the court, in the locker room and in the community, it is hard to find many better human beings in the NBA than Antawn Jamison. This is the era of athletes falling from grace; but for now, Jamison belongs up there. [...] All of that is why the Wizards now owe it Jamison to trade him and give him a chance with another team. They have been grasping on to this group for years hoping for health, luck and the right playoff seed. But for various reasons, much of it plain bad luck and a rising superstar in Cleveland, they haven’t gotten there. Now with the Arenas suspension and the Pollin death and the impending doom (DeShawn Stevenson called it a “black cloud” over the team), there are no more illusions. The dam has broken, it is over in Washington. [Brian Windhorst]

Cavaliers Camp Basketball“[Jawad] Williams is an exception to this list having already played in NBA games as both a Clipper and Cav, but both were short-lived scenarios and he has yet to play a full, or anything close to a full, NBA season. Part of the famous 2005 North Carolina team, Williams watched five teammates (Marvin Williams, Raymond Felton, Sean May, Rashad McCants, David Noel) get drafted while his name went uncalled. Since then, Williams has been invited to preseason camps and D-League rosters, hoping to stick in the NBA once and for all. He currently is averaging 7.2 points in 19 minutes, and at 6’9” has the length to potentially make an impact on a roster this season.” [Brett Callahan/SLAMOnline]

Open Thread: Philadelphia 76ers at Cavaliers

cavs-logo

Your starting five on this lovely fan appreciation night:

Delonte West
Wally Szczerbiak
Sasha Pavlovic
Darnell Jackson
Anderson Varejao

With LeBron, Mo, Z, Ben and Joe Smith all resting before the playoffs, this leaves us with Lorenzen Wright, Jawad Williams, Danny Gibson and Tarence Kinsey off of the bench. A Cavs win means two things: they tie the all-time record for home wins, and it would likely force Philly to play Boston in the first round of the playoffs. If the Sixers win, they have a shot at the sixth seed and could face Orlando.

It may not be the prettiest of games, but you’re all more than welcome to enjoy it with us in the comments.

Go Cavs!
