Tigers or Indians: Stronger Roster Going Forward?

I would be lying if I said that I saw what transpired in New York this weekend coming.  It’s hard to predict something that awful and impotent.  Unless of course you’re talking about this man.

But I did think there was a good chance that we’d enter our game this evening in a virtual lock with the Detroit Tigers.  We were going up against the best offense in baseball while the Tigers got to beat up on the Seattle Mariners.  It seemed that we’d likely lose our slight lead over Detroit that we had going into the Yankees series, shifting a new sort of focus on the competition between the Indians and Tigers—competition that seemed silly to discuss just four weeks ago.

Which, in some ways, is really exciting.  This series is hopefully going to be the beginning of a season-long back-and-forth between two good (yet flawed) teams. [Read more...]

Armando Galarraga, Jim Joyce, and The Tribe – Oh What a Night

I’ve been thinking about the various ways I wanted to write this recap. I saw every pitch of last night’s Tigers 3-0 win over the Indians. Like all of you, I was absolutely stunned by the finish. In case you were living on another planet last night, the Tigers Armando Galarraga was mowing down the Indians with complete ease and was one out away from immortality.

There have only been 20 perfect games in the history of the national pastime. In other words, you have the same chance of getting stuck by lightning than throwing one. Galarraga was there. We all thought the Baseball Gods were on his side after Austin Jackson made a spectacular catch with his back to home plate on a dead sprint to start the inning, robbing Mark Grudzielanek of a double. It was eerily similar to the catch Dewayne Wise made to save Mark Buerhrle’s perfecto in Chicago last summer. After dispatching Mike Redmond on a weak ground out, the only man that stood between Galarraga and history was Jason Donald. [Read more...]

Another Lost Weekend For the Tribe

LaportaHow can we lose thee? Let me count the ways.

Ladies and Gentlemen, our baseball team is an abject disaster at this point. It was yet another weekend of missed opportunities and poor pitching performances by the Wahoo Warriors that saw them lose two of three to an average at best Detroit Tigers team at Comerica Park. Friday’s 6-5 lead may have been a win and something to build on, but even that game came with a caveat; the bullpen was handed a 6-0 lead and nearly gave it all back. The good news in that one was Carl Pavano’s seven-plus brilliant innings and Kerry Wood’s spectacular 1-2-3 ninth. In between those two, you needed to hide your eyes from the horror show. Rookies Matt Laporta and Luis Valbuena were brought up from Columbus to give this team a shot in the arm. One would figure this could maybe be something to build on and the Indians could take that momentum into Saturday.

Not so much.
