Waiver wire gems: “One of the best acquisitions of the Eric Mangini era was when he claimed Matt Roth off of waivers from Miami last season on Nov. 25 and played four days later. Roth literally stepped in after a couple of days of practice and was productive with seven tackles and a sack in his first game against the Bengals.

The 6-foot-4 275-pound outside linebacker played the final six games with the Browns and had 28 tackles and four sacks.

Can he pick up where he left off last season?” [Fred Greetham/The OBR]

Are the Cavs getting no respect or were the Lakers hoping to spend Christmas Day somewhere else? “Based on the mood of the Lakers Thursday as they got ready to play the Cavs, you could tell they were not approaching this game like their opponents. Kobe Bryant openly said it wasn’t like playing the Celtics on Christmas last year. He downplayed any rivalry he had with LeBron James.” [Brian Windhorst/Cleveland Plain Dealer]

Grady Sizemore, Hall of Fame Material?

Indians Tigers BaseballWith 2009 MLB award voting now in the rear view mirror, Joe Posnanski has deemed  St. Louis Cardinal Albert Pujols a Hall of Fame lock at age 29.  Winning his third MVP award in five years, and looking at his numbers, it would be hard to argue with such a statement.  Thankfully, the non-debate then lead to a list of 10 players whom Posnanski feels are on a path to be Hall of Famers by the time their career is over.  And even more thankful (for Tribe fans, anyway) is that the list included Indians center fielder Grady Sizemore.

When discussing Sizemore, Posnanski feels that Grady has many positives in his corner.  For one, Grady is only 27-years old.  Labling Sizemore as “above average at every part of the game except throwing” only makes a stronger case.  But is the Hall of Fame for players who are just “above average?”

Open field tackling?  Quite the concept: “We start every day with an open field tackling drill. It gets you going early in practice, there’s no sluggin’ around, it’s uptempo, guys are talking trash. It’s definitely a good thing. [...] I can already tell that all those sprints, all the hard lifting I did in the off-season is coming in handy now. I feel like I’m getting there, getting better each and every day. I’m working hard to try to push myself.” [Abe Elam/AbeElam.com]

eric-wedge-barry-chin-globe2Free Cliff Lee! “If [Cliff] Lee’s not tired and could have pitched the ninth, Wedge was being a sheep.  General manager Mark Shapiro bought him an expensive toy, a closer, in the wake of the demoralizing ninth innings of 2008. The Indians might have won the AL Central if the back of their bullpen had been in order. These factors probably went into Wedge’s thinking. When it came to push the ninth-inning button, he did it. He’s no fool. Except, that, he was.” [David Brown/Big Leauge Stew]

It’s a shame that for every one Joe Posnanski, there are 10 Stephen A. Smiths.  However, everytime Joe steps up to the plate, he hits a home run.  Some of his posts are a little long for most casual blog readers, but he continues to be one of the best out there – and yes, his Cleveland ties give him a few extra points in my book.

His latest is up at SI.com, and is a must read for all Cleveland fans.  Please do yourself a favor while you wait for the clock to tick closer to 12:00 AM and check it out.

New year, same hope: a title for my hometown (finally) [Joe Posnanski]

Do the Browns Suffer From Diloneism?

A few days ago, Joe Posnanski wrote an excellent piece on the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.  He touted their ability to win despite the fact that they do not change their ways when facing certain pitchers.  The case in point was that Angels hitting coach Mickey Hatcher said that the team does not plan on taking pitches against Dice-K Matsuzaka, despite the fact that he walked a TON of players this season.  Stubborn, yes.  But it got them this far.  But were they winning in spite of themselves?

Joe called this inner battle “Diloneism.”  I found this quite interesting, that not only was Miguel Dilone a one-time .341-hitting member of the Cleveland Indians, but he was also one of the weakest arms to ever grace Municipal Stadium while playing for one of the worst teams in the history of the franchise.  In my interview with Terry Pluto, he dropped a quick jab at David Dellucci when comparing his outfield prowess to that of Dilone.  But while you can read Joe’s piece that focuses on the baseball frame of thought, I couldn’t help but compare what he was saying to the Cleveland Browns of the last 12 months.
