John Turner discusses his time covering Johnny Manziel in high school – WFNY Podcast – 2014-06-17

WFNY Podcast LogoJohn Turner of The Sporting News was kind enough to join me and talk about his time covering Johnny Manziel way back in high school. We talked about just how good and competitive Johnny Manziel is. We talked about his off-field antics.

We also spent some time talking about the existing sports media culture including “gotcha!” headlines and slideshows.

Even though he’s a Detroit fan, you should give him a follow on Twitter.

WFNY Podcast LogoAlways fun to talk to @sportsyelling about everything. This time I wanted to help everyone get to know her even that much more before we talked about sports.

So, I asked about movies, music, internet cliches and some other stuff before talking about…

Why Johnny Manziel should start…On the bench

Johnny Football Fan Art

Now that the Browns have drafted Johnny Manziel and are heading into rookie mini camp this weekend, the proclamations have begun. I’ll try not to create any straw men here, but I’m pretty confident most of us have heard variations on the following phrase. People say, “You don’t draft a guy in the first round to sit him on the bench.” Or more specifically to Johnny Manziel, “You don’t draft Johnny Football and then sit him behind Brian Hoyer.” There are these ideas that regardless of whether it’s Andrew Luck, Brady Quinn, Brandon Weeden, Aaron Rodgers, Ben Roethlisberger, Christian Ponder or Ryan Tannehill, you just have to live by a clichéd statement disguised as a pseudo-intellectual philosophy. I don’t buy that there are hard fast rules for this and my preference is for Manziel to sit at the beginning.

Browns look to avoid “Tebow situation” with Johnny Manziel at rookie mini-camp

The Cleveland Browns are going to do everything they can to control the narrative of their football team, it seems. They have decided to be ultra protective with their high profile rookie quarterback Johnny Manziel, apparently barring national media from rookie mini-camp.

So I’m not sure where this fits into the narratives that have been suggested. Did the Browns draft Johnny Manziel to move the needle and sell tickets? Apparently not, if they’re actively limiting media coverage early and often. Maybe, just maybe, the Browns want to do everything they can to maximize the potential of Johnny Manziel and allow him to concentrate on football as much as possible.

Here’s hoping that all these buttons the Browns are pushing are going to work and allow Manziel to become the franchise quarterback the team has needed for so long.

2014 NFL Draft: Johnny Manziel, Josh Gordon, Michael Sam and Don Jones – WFNY Podcast – 2014-05-12

It’s been quite a while since I talked to Jon on the podcast, but I asked him to keep tabs on the NFL draft as a passive Browns fan who is married to a real Browns fan.

We ended up talking a lot about draft value, trades, Johnny Football, Josh Gordon’s impending suspension and the cultural moment of Michael Sam being drafted.

In addition we talked about the Miami Dolphins’ punishment of Don Jones for his two tweets about the Michael Sam kiss on television.

2014 NFL Draft: Scott Raab talks Johnny Manziel, Josh Gordon and the Sin Tax – WFNY Podcast – 2014-05-10

WFNY Podcast LogoA lot of people asked for it, and I got the fateful text last week that said Scott was ready and had something to say!

In all seriousness, I loved talking to Scott Raab every week and I love talking to him whenever I get the chance to now. With the Johnny Manziel draft pick and the Josh Gordon rumors that cropped up, there was little doubt that he and I would get together on the phone and talk about the Cleveland sports news of the moment.

We also found time to talk about the Sin Tax and Chief Wahoo briefly.

Johnny Manziel draft reaction videos tell the tale

It’s 2014 and people are videotaping everything. That can sometimes be troubling, but on a night where the Browns drafted Johnny Manziel it’s pretty useful. Here are some of the more fun reaction videos I found today.

Here’s the ESPN Cleveland party with Aaron Goldhammer and Tony Rizzo. There are a couple naysayers in there, but what a fun scene overall.

I’m not sure where exactly this video comes from, but it’s a lot of fun too, despite the incessant chanting.

Here’s what appears to be a basement party pile on after Johnny Manziel was selected.

And here’s the reaction from the party at the Cleveland Convention Center including soccer slide celebration that looked kind of painful, actually.

And this is why the Internet is fun. The Browns get Johnny Manziel and people start video mashups on Youtube with celebration footage, including… Apollo 13. Gotta love the Ed Harris reaction shot.

2014 NFL Draft: Johnny Manziel and Justin Gilbert hold up their jerseys in Berea

The Browns welcomed the biggest name of the 2014 NFL draft into Berea today and this is what it looked like. Also, no surprise, all the initial questions were for the second man taken yesterday, Johnny Manziel. Poor Justin Gilbert.

Johnny Manziel to grace the cover of Sports Illustrated (along with a Mike Holmgren quote)

Johnny Football doesn’t know where he’s going in the draft, but he knows who at least one of his detractors is. His quote will join him on the cover of Sports Illustrated’s Draft Preview issue. Former Browns Prez, Mike Holmgren says of Manziel, “Too Playground, too freelancey”

When I think of Mike Holmgren’s reign as defacto owner or President of the Browns, I think “Too Seattle, too coachey”

Have you seen Johnny Football in Cleveland today?

Johnny Football Fan Art

The word is out that Johnny Manziel is having his visit in Cleveland today. Have you seen him?

As I said yesterday, I’m really not sure that draft boards are changing that drastically at this stage of the game. One thing I am sure of is that I don’t think I have anything else to say about Johnny that I haven’t said already.

Need proof? Here’s a bunch of things we’ve already said.

WFNY Podcast LogoThe fake Jim Kanicki or the real Mike Burgermeister joined me to talk through some Browns topics.

We talked about the 2014 NFL draft, specifically who the Browns should take at #4. Mike Evans vs. Sammy Watkins and talking about three studs on the offensive line.

Finally, we talked a bit about NFL draft cliches.

Talking Browns and NFL combine with @jimkanicki – WFNY Podcast – 2014-02-27

WFNY Podcast LogoJim Kanicki (Mike Burgermeister) joined me today to discuss all things Browns. We talked about the Browns decision to release D’Qwell Jackson, the shakeup of the front office, the free agencies of Alex Mack and T.J. Ward, Mike Pettine and lots about the combine. Is the combine meaningful? If so, how meaningful?

Pic: More Johnny Football Fan Art Puts Manziel in Browns Colors

We’ve spent a lot of time talking about Johnny Manziel already. He’s spent time talking about the Browns in the past week. It’s no wonder that talented graphic artists continue to use their talents to put Johnny in Cleveland colors well ahead of the NFL Draft. Here’s another really good rendition of Johnny wearing the Orange and Brown. Assuming it happens in the draft, that’d be a pretty great poster for kids to put on their walls, huh?

This may now require a trade

This may now require a trade

It’s a divisive topic. Every time anything hits the WFNY Facebook page regarding Johnny Manziel, there’s an immediate split among fans who love the idea of Johnny Manziel becoming a Cleveland Brown and those who are as opposed to it as if Johnny Manziel is a fierce combination of Ryan Leaf, Mark Sanchez, Michael Vick and Matt Leinart. The truth is that nobody knows for sure how Johnny Manziel will do as an NFL quarterback, but I’m ready to make the case that he can be a good one, worthy of Browns fans’ hopes and dreams for a franchise quarterback.

Video: Texas A&M thanks Johnny Manziel with highlight video

Like it or not, Johnny Manziel is news for Cleveland Browns fans until such time as he’s not officially an option for them in the upcoming NFL draft. So, as we move ever closer to that fateful weekend, I’m sure a lot of us will be watching various highlight compilations of many of the available quarterbacks. Texas A&M was so appreciative of Johnny Football’s time there, they went ahead and made one as a “Thank You!”

But wait, there’s more. Infographics too!

Braxton Miller finishes 5th in Heisman voting

Ohio State sophomore quarterback Braxton Miller finished 5th in the voting for this year’s Heisman Trophy. The star of Ohio State’s undefeated team received three first place votes.

Texas A&M redshirt freshman quartback Johnny Manzel won the award, collecting 456 first place votes. Manzel is the first “freshman” to win the award.
