Who Should the Cavs Target in Free Agency?

Not this guy

The Decision. Larry Hughes, Donyell Marshall and Damon Jones. Gerald Wilkins, “Jordan stopper“. Sasha Pavlovic and Anderson Varejao holding out. Anthony Parker, Leon Powe and Jamario Moon. Michael Cage. Ira Newble and Kevin Ollie. Carlos Boozer lying to Gordon Gund.

Are we excited for free agency, Cavs fans?!

As of 12:01 AM this morning, only three days after the Cavs drafted future pieces in Dion Waiters and Tyler Zeller, which was just one week after LeBron hoisted the Larry O’Brien trophy, NBA teams can begin talking to free agents. Players can’t officially sign contracts until Wednesday, July 11th.

While the Cavs won’t be pursuing the Deron Williams’s of the world, they do have some options.

Cleveland Cavaliers not on Flynn’s list of preferred destinations

It has been reported that the Cavaliers have an interest in signing free agent PG Jonny Flynn. The feeling it seems is not exactly mutual.

According to ESPN LA, Flynn has a list of six teams that he would like to play for next season-

“After a rocky start to his career that has been challenged by hip surgery and two trades since being selected No. 6 out of Syracuse in the 2009 NBA draft, Jonny Flynn is seeking a fresh start this offseason and just might find it with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Flynn has identified six teams — the Lakers, Portland, Phoenix, Toronto, Chicago, and Brooklyn — as potential destinations and should find mutual interest from the potential suitors, according to a source close to the unrestricted free agent point guard.”

Sounds like the Cavaliers might have to outbid for his services if they really want him.

NBA Free Agency Rumor: Cavs Eyeing PG Jonny Flynn

This sounds familiar. Both in 2010 and then again in March, the Cavs reportedly targeted PG Jonny Flynn, the former Syracuse star who has fizzled thus far in the NBA.

Now, today, we’re seeing from the Akron Beacon Journal’s Jason Lloyd that Cleveland again is rumored to target Flynn when free agency begins soon.

Everyone rightfully focused on draft, but free agency begins Sunday. Expect #Cavs to pursue unrestricted free agent Jonny Flynn to be the backup point guard. Interest there on both sides.

Several reports over the past few weeks have had Flynn in the Cleveland area for workouts, occasionally alongside Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, Cleveland’s possible selection in the first round tomorrow.

Flynn was the No. 6 pick in the 2009 draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves, the year they took three point guards in the first round. He has struggled in limited playing time, just averaging 9.2 points and 3.9 assists on 40% shooting in 163 career games, averaging 22.9 minutes per contest. Most recently, the 23-year-old finished last season with the Portland Trailblazers.

Behind Kyrie Irving, the Cavs have a non-guaranteed contract for Donald Sloan and a team option for Daniel Gibson. Sloan impressed late last year, but doesn’t have quite the same high-profile pedigree. Gibson occasionally plays both guard positions, but lacks ideal size.
