NFL Free Agency: Chiefs sign Peyton Hillis

NFL Network is reporting that Peyton Hillis’ visit to Kansas City was productive for him and the team. Hillis has reportedly reunited with Brian Daboll for the 2012 season.

The Chiefs then made it official, but no contract terms have been reported yet. Adam Schefter reports that the Chiefs got it done for one year and $3 million, obviously guaranteed.

Back in Cleveland, expect the Ben Tate trade rumors and Trent Richardson draft talk to heat up immensely. Between the Hillis signing and the Eric Steinbach release, the Browns’ running game took an immense hit, crushing dreams that it could ever return to 2010 form.

NFL Free Agency: Peyton Hillis to visit Chiefs

Finally some Browns free agency news. Oh wait.

Peyton Hillis might be looking to re-unite with the only guy not named Shanahan who made him successful as he’s reportedly set to meet with Brian Daboll’s Kansas City Chiefs.

The Peyton Hillis saga has been a roller coaster for a long time. The Browns have most recently been on record saying they’d be interested in bringing him back despite not getting a deal done before he became an unrestricted free agent.

Hillis is also on record saying he wants to be back in Cleveland. Whether he decides to give the Browns another look after Kansas City remains to be seen.

Hillis might be a nice counter-balance to Jamaal Charles for the Chiefs.

NFL Wild Card Sunday, Browns Coaching News Open Thread

The NFL season is over for the Cleveland Browns, but fans can still enjoy wild card Sunday’s slate of games. The Baltimore Ravens face Kansas City at 1 p.m. in the AFC, and in the NFC, the Philadelphia Eagles host the Green Bay Packers at 4:30 p.m.

With yesterday’s results, it is already guaranteed that the New York Jets or New England will be in the AFC Championship game. A victory by Baltimore today would set up a pair of epic rivalries facing off in the Divisional Round next week.

Meanwhile, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen (h/t @MaryKayCabot on Twitter) reported earlier that St. Louis Rams offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur is emerging as the favorite for the Browns head coaching position. Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinwheg is another leading candidate according to rumors, while Atlanta Falcons OC Mike Mularkey interviewed yesterday. Stay tuned for any developing news.

Mangini: We Need to Get Josh Cribbs More Touches

Though the Browns lost their second week contest to the Kansas City Chiefs, wide receiver Joshua Cribbs hauled in three passes for 74 yards and a touchdown – arguably his most successful game as a receiver in the NFL.  Sure, he caught more passes in Week 2 of the 2009 season, but prior to Sunday’s game, Cribbs’ highest yardage total in the passing game was 39.

Unfortunately for Josh and the Browns, his activity slowed considerably in the second half.  And as one of the biggest play makers on the team, head coach Eric Mangini wants to get Cribbs more involved within the Browns offensive scheme.

Game 2 Open Thread: Kansas City at Cleveland

It’s mid-September Sunday afternoon clash between Kansas City and Cleveland – the Royals and Indians are locked in a close race to finish fourth.  Nevermind, I suppose most, all, of you will be watching the Kansas City and Cleveland afternoon matchup that features the Chiefs and Browns.  The Browns are 1-10 in home openers in the Cleveland Browns Stadium era.  Coming off a discouraging loss in Tampa where they most certainly snatched defeat from the jaws of victory, the Browns will take the field, in all likelihood, with Seneca Wallace leading the offense.  Jake Delhomme was held out of practice all week and while the Browns have been secretive and mysterious about who will actually start, it’s likely Wallace at this point.  As with every game this season, kick off is set for 1 PM and join us in the comments as the Browns take on the Chiefs in a crucial early season game for this team.

The Browns Will Win If…

Welp, the excitement from last week’s installment—at least from this reporter—is somewhat lessened following the Browns down-own-leg-urination in the second half on Sunday against Tampa Bay. But, it’s still the home opener. That’s gotta count for something, right? RIGHT?

brownschiefs

Back in the pre-season, I had circled this game as a winnable one. After the meltdown against the Bucs combined with KC’s big win over the Chargers, that’s looking much less the case now. It’s important to remember that the Chiefs put up 34 points on the Browns back in December, and put up 491 total yards in the process. So, can the Browns tighten up? Can they keep from killing themselves with turnovers just once? Without further ado…

Welcoming the challenges: “Coach Todd Haley said in the conference call with the Cleveland media on Wednesday that the Kansas City Chiefs’ scout team will “definitely have a guy wearing a number 35 jersey this week.” That happens when you rush for 286 yards against a team in the previous season, as Jerome Harrison did.

“That’s a real compliment,” Harrison said. Harrison was asked if he thought he would be a marked man this week.

“Hopefully, I’m a (marked man) every Sunday.” [Fred Greetham/The OBR]

Willie McGinest Could Return…

Cleveland+Browns+v+Pittsburgh+Steelers+9ZzfsirUESyl…Just not to the Cleveland Browns.

He didn’t play last season and rookie center Alex Mack took his jersey number, but former Browns outside linebacker Willie McGinest – now 39-years old -  is entertaining the idea of coming back to the NFL if given the right situation.  McGinest, in a report from the Boston Herald, has yet to turn in his retirement papers despite taking a year off of the field.

“I took the time this year to heal and train and get stronger and get better,” said McGinest.  “You never know – I definitely want to do some commentating.  I’m going to weigh my options and see what happens.”

91022348CC006_CAVALIERSMEDIADAYMost valuable role players: “LeBron will always get his 28-30 points with eight or nine rebounds and assists but opponents have become accustomed to weathering the storm if you will and allowing James to get his and forcing his teammates to come through.  In the playoffs, his teammates didn’t come through. Mo Williams completely disappeared in the post-season last year.

This season? In games that Williams has scored 20+ points, the Cavs are 12-3 and in those games Mo is shooting a ridiculous 61% from three (43-71).  Simply put, when LeBron drives and kicks to Mo and that shot falls, the Cavs are very close to being the best team in basketball.” [But the Game is On]

Josh Cribbs Nabs Special Teams Honors Once Again

Cribbs ArmwarmersFor the third time in his career, and the second time this season, return man extraordinaire Josh Cribbs has been named the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week.

After returning two kickoffs for touchdowns against the Kansas City Cheifs, Cribbs became the second player in the history of the game to record at least two touchdowns of at least 100 yards in a single contest.  The two kickoff returns were his seventh and eighth of his career – an NFL record – and is now 14th on the all-time return yards list.  Following his 200 all-purpose-yard effort last week, Cribbs has become the first member of the Browns to win the award on back-to-back occasions.

Unfortunately, teammate Jerome Harrison (286 yards rushing, three touchdowns) did not receive Offensive Player of the Week honors as those were given to Pittsburgh’s Ben Roethlisberger (503 yards passing, three touchdowns).  Then again, Harrison doesn’t wear socks as arm warmers.

Week 15 Open Thread: Browns at Chiefs

brownschiefsThere has been a lot of Browns talk this week but most of it revolved around matters off the field such as the pursuit of Mike Holmgren and the contract situation of Joshua Cribbs.  But the Browns return to the field today after a long week and some extended time off granted by Coach Mangini after last Thursday’s win.  They are at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City against an equally lowly Chiefs squad under first year head coach Todd Haley.  The Browns have not won back-to-back games in over a year when they beat the Bengals and Giants early last fall.  Eric Mangini has to be worried about his job status with the potential of a new boss, err, czar coming in to try and clean things up.  Perhaps another win against a fellow cellar dweller would help his cause.  Join us this afternoon in the comments as we watch the Browns try and go for two in a row.  Inactives are below…

While We’re Waiting…Pavlik Returns, Shaq wins NBA _____ of the Month, Chiefs-Browns Worst Matchup Ever?

 Pavlik

Looking at Kelly Pavlik as he returns to the ring tonight in Youngstown after a long layoff: “In a weird twist of reality Pavlik went to Las Vegas to train for this fight, because it provided a much calmer and private atmosphere to train as opposed to Youngstown. Weird, huh? But by all accounts the left hand, specifically the knuckle of the index finger is back to 100%.  What also appears to be back to 100%, by Kelly’s own account, is his hunger and passion for boxing. Something many in his hometown were starting to question. I personally never looked at it like that. It appeared to be more of a year to put the boat in neutral and recharge the batteries. Kelly had a lot of irons in fire outside the ring this year, including opening a restaurant back in August. The crazy thing is the break and hand problems just may have come at the best time, in a business sense.  Boxing has a lot of momentum heading into 2010 with the headlining super bout of Pac-Man vs. Money Mayweather.  So their is money to be made across all weight divisions. As an American World Champ in a highlight division, it should be a big healthy and productive year in the spotlight for the man know as The Ghost.” [DiNunzio/Thunder Treats]

The Browns Will Win If…

Perhaps it’s akin to the hallucinations mountain climbers experience at high altitudes due to lack of oxygen, but the uber-defensive win over Pittsburgh last Thursday has me thinking positively about this weekend’s game. I had this one circled back in October as one of the Browns’ last/best chances for a victory.

brownschiefs

This game will be like that scene in “Face/Off” where John Travolta and Nicholas Cage turn to shoot their guns at each other through a mirror and end up pointing their guns at images of themselves. Deep, I know. These teams have very similar identities, dating all the way back to the days of Martyball. They also both now find themselves struggling to find a footing in a rebuilding program. Offensive yards per game ranks: KC 30th, CLE 32nd; Points per game ranks: KC 28th, CLE 30th. Defensive yards per game ranks: KC 30th, CLE 31st; Points allowed per game ranks: KC 29th, CLE 25th. In other words, it’s going to be a barn burner! Without further ado…

Coaches not being nice make professional athletes sad pandas: “Chiefs Pro Bowl guard Brian Waters asked the organization Thursday to release or trade him this offseason, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. [...] Waters, according to the source, was offended and shocked by what he perceived to be the arrogance of Todd Haley and Scott Pioli.” [Jason Whitlock/Kansas City Star]

Scratch Pioli Off The List

Chiefs GM Scott PioliFrom the moment the Browns hired Eric Mangini to be the new head coach without first hiring a GM, we knew it virtually meant that still getting Scott Pioli to come to Cleveland was a long shot at best. But still, none the less, some of us held out hope that Pioli would swallow his pride and still come to Cleveland and be the savior of the franchise.

Well, that dream is over. Scott Pioli has been hired as the next GM of the Kansas City Chiefs. Needless to say, Chiefs fans are rejoicing and reveling in the praise others are heaping on this move. Meanwhile, Browns fans continue to sit in stunned silence as we try to comprehend what exactly is going on in Berea with our beloved Browns.

Remember, Pioli was initially considered to be the hands-on favorite to land the Browns job. In fact, some thought the hiring process would be mere formality and that within a week of firing Phil Savage, the Browns would have Pioli in place to guide the future of the Browns organization. So how did we get where we are today?   [Read more...]

Kansas City Chiefs Also Eyeing Pioli

ESPN has been all over the merry-go-round of NFL head coaches and general managers over the past 48 hours.  Not long after the Browns were given the “nah, I’m good” by Bill Cowher, Lerner Inc. turned in the direction of Scott Pioli.  Fans of the Browns have mixed feelings about another New England guy, but he’s obviously not a secret by any means – especially with the Kansas City Chiefs looking his way as well.

“They Can’t Do That To Our Pledges! Only WE Can Do That To Our Pledges!”

Oh, Chiefs fan. You’ve got some nerve. One of my favorite sports traditions is always the game of “Homer Fan Posts Trades Of Their Team’s Trash For Other Team’s Good Players”. You don’t honestly think we’ll just give you one of our QBs, do you?

Apparently, you do. Exhibit A: Get Brady Now

Here, we think it would be great if the Chiefs grabbed Brady Quinn from the Browns. Maybe a third round pick and Brodie, maybe a second or first round pick, who knows? We just know the Chiefs have the cash and the need.

Sure. Sounds good. But, I don’t think their trade ideas are the most beneficial or realistic. I would take their first round pick in 2009, since it looks like they’re going to be really, really lousy. I can’t imagine they’d give it to us. Likewise, as I told the guys this morning, if we traded Quinn for a third-round pick and Brodie Croyle, you might as well just shoot me in the head. [Read more...]
