Sullinger sits out as Buckeyes fall to Jayhawks: “Even with Jared Sullinger it was going to be a tall order to walk into Allen Fieldhouse and end a 46 non-conference game winning streak.

Without him, the Buckeyes simply couldn’t create enough good looks at the offensive end and gave up far too many at the other end as Kansas took down the Buckeyes 78-67 this afternoon in Lawrence.

Ohio State never led in the game but trailed by just four at 62-58 with 5:39 to play following a 10-3 run sparked by William Buford. WB couldn’t throw it in the ocean in the opening 20 minutes (1/7 FG, 4 pts) but caught fire early in the second half scoring 14 of 19 Ohio State points during one stretch as the Buckeyes inched toward a possible upset.

It wasn’t meant to be however as Kansas closed out the game with a 16-9 run behind 10 points from Thomas Robinson as he abused Amir Williams and to a lesser extend Evan Ravenel at a time when the Buckeyes had to have defensive stops. Robinson led the Jayhawks with 21 points and seven boards behind the huge 2nd half that saw him pour in 14 points along with all seven of his boards.

Buford’s 21 points (8/23, 17 pts in 2H) paced the Buckeye attack with DeShaun Thomas adding 19 points (7/14 FG, 3/7 3FG) and five boards.”  [Eleven Warriors / Chris Lauderback] [Read more...]

While We’re Waiting…Buckeyes Head To Phog Allen, Oden Suffers Setback

Previewing #2 OSU / #13 Kansas later today down at Phog Allen Fieldhouse:  ”After an early loss to #1 Kentucky in New York, Kansas rebounded to make it to the Maui Invitational final. But sloppy defense late and an improbable 3-pointer led to another loss against #6 Duke. Since then, the Jayhawks have won 3 straight against inferior competition in preparation for OSU. It usually takes a couple of weeks to recover from the Maui trip, and in addition to that the team battled “the crud” for a bit before shaking it off.

Helping to make up for the loss of so much fire-power, and especially the loss of the Morris twins, is junior forward Thomas Robinson. Robinson has been a beast on the front-court, at one point recording six straight double-doubles. Robinson racked up a career high 26 points in KU’s victory against Long Beach State on Tuesday and also grabbed 11 boards. He is not as large as Sullinger, but he cleans the glass pretty well, averaging 12 rebounds per game.

Another key player for Kansas is senior point guard Tyshawn Taylor. Taylor is a distributor, but he’s also a serious scoring threat from the one. He’s shooting nearly 46% from the field this season, including a sizzling 57% from downtown. Reserve guard Conner Teahan is another dead-eye shooter from distance, hitting 45% of his threes. He helped the Jayhawks break the game open against Long Beach, hitting 4 triples and scoring a career high 14 points.”  [Joe Beale  / Eleven Warriors] [Read more...]

Buckeyes beat a bad team and Cleveland State gets conference win over Detroit

Ohio State played the University of Texas Pan-American today.  The Broncs, as opposed to the Broncos, are not a good basketball team.

After beating Victory University in late November by 19 points, the school first founded in 1927 as Edinburgh College has now fallen all the way to 2-7 on this 2011-12 season.  But enough about the tenth largest university in Texas who came up short against the Sullinger-less Ohio State Buckeyes 64-35 earlier today in the Columbus.

What’s important is that OSU moves to 8-0 with the win today, and now readies the ship for a collision with TD’s Kansas Jayhawks.

Evan Ravenal got his first start of his career today, and finished with 11 points and 7 rebounds in 20 minutes of work.   Deshaun Thomas also scored eleven, and that many guys got into the game for Thad Matta’s group on the day.

Sullinger is expected back for the trip down to Kansas on December 10th, and as of today the Jayhawks are ranked 14th in the nation. [Read more...]

WFNY Bracket Challenge – Ohio State Out

Well, I am sure a lot of WFNYers are significantly less interested in the tourney now that the Buckeyes have been Calipari’d out of the game.  Still, the contest goes on for the Tribe tickets and Carlos Santana jersey.  As we await opening day on Friday, that should be enough to keep your eyes glued to the competition.

Disappointing Losses and Perspective

How much more of this am I supposed to endure?

I am a proud graduate of the University of Kansas who was born and raised in Cleveland. I attended my first Indians game before I could walk. The only reason I couldn’t attend the infamous “Red, Right, 88″ game in January of 1981 was because my mother said -25 wind chill was too cold for a four year old. I witness “The Drive” and “The Shot” live in person. So by the time I first stepped foot in Lawrence, Kansas in the fall of 1994, I had already been hardened.

The majority of my college buddies were from Chicago, and I was in college during the Bulls second three-peat. That was painful for the lone Clevelander in the group. Also while I was at KU, the Cavs were irrelevant, the Browns were taken away from us, and the Indians were in the midst of their “Era of Champions” (SIDE NOTE – only in our city would the “Era of Champions” not have a single world title attached to it).
