Is this our Armageddon?

One of you guys said yesterday that Kelvin Sampson as coach of the Cavs is our Armageddon scenario. This is the mental image I got. Don’t blame me. Blame the fine folks at Pabst.

<BRIGHT FLASHES>

<A phone rings>

Kelvin Sampson answers his phone. It is Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert, calling him back. “No”, Gilbert says. He hasn’t heard from LeBron. Quite frankly, nobody has. Even the great Tom Izzo could not get a hold of LeBron, Gilbert tells Sampson.

Furiously pacing, Sampson tries to think of a way to reach out to LeBron. Even a one-way dialogue is better than no dialogue, he thinks. He thinks “what would Bruce Willis do?” and it hits him. Pen comes to paper. Things finally come together.

Kelvin Sampson On Cavs’ List – But Where?

Yesterday, Brian Windhorst reported that coach Kelvin Sampson is on a list of potential candidates in the NBA assistant coaching ranks.  Many people know Kelvin Sampson because of his infamous tenure with the Indiana Hoosiers basketball program, specifically the recruitment of Eric Gordon.  That short tenure in Indiana ended up costing Sampson his job at the school, a $500,000 bonus, and a team scholarship.  The real question is whether or not this guy can coach or not.  Regardless of the controversy surrounding Sampson over the years at Oklahoma and Indiana as fans, we really don’t know the answer to that question. We can look at his records in college, but if he was underhandedly recruiting stars all the time, it stands to reason he might have just had better players.

The other question is where does Sampson fit on the Cavaliers’ list of priorities? Danny Ferry is probably still working on this project, but wouldn’t it be strange if Danny Ferry left his GM post shortly after working through the list of candidates?  The idea of the organizational structure is to have the GM working with the coach and vice versa.  At this stage of the game, we still don’t have any word that Danny Ferry will definitely be back at his GM post next season. 02/26 Morning Minute: Crickets…

Slow DayYou know it is a slow day in Cleveland sports when two of the top stories regard “reunions.”  Apparently, Tribe players Ryan Garko and Ben Francisco attended the same high school, while Delonte West is rejoined with a former college teammate in Dwayne Jones.  Apparently, West and Jones were quite the pranksters…

One of their most notorious pranks involved filling a large trash can with water. They would lean the can against a dorm-room door, knock, then scatter as the unsuspected student would open the door and flood his or her room.

“It got to the point were no one wanted to open their door,” Jones said. “People had a suspicion that it was me and Delonte, but they could never prove that we did it. For some reason our room would always stay dry.”

While there’s another good story about the two hoopsters and a towed car, stuff like this is decent feel-good fodder to help fans realize that the new players meshing together may not be as difficult as others think – even if Jones may see an even further reduction in time with the new big men.  One of LeBron’s best friends on the team is Damon Jones, and look at his role.

Kelvin SampsonKelvin Sampson “Tampering” With OSU Recruits?

The world of recruiting is a lot like the Wild West from the movies. It’s a world dominated by renegades and outlaws. I mentioned the way OSU football recruit Willie Mobley’s mother received a letter from a Jim Tressel imposter urging Mobley not to go to OSU. Well, evidently, football may not be the only sport in which OSU recruits are receiving unwanted communications from representatives of other schools.

I found this little blurb buried in a recent installment of the Columbus Dispatch’s Buckeye Xtra column. In it, Bob Baptist writes, [Read more...]

02/14 Morning Minute: DNPs, K2 and the Rich Get Richer

Manu GinobiliManu Ginobili sees your 40, and raises you six more.  With a quick shot back to yesterday’s blurb regarding Branson Wright’s comparison to the San Antonio Spurs, let’s compare injured players.

  • San Antonio DNP: Brent Barry, Francisco Elson, Matt Bonner, Tony Parker, Ian Mahinmi
  • Cleveland DNP: Eric Snow, Cedric Simmons, Daniel Gibson, Sasha Pavlovic, Anderson Varejao, Shannon Brown

Two quick things jump out at me.  1) Who the heck is Ian Mahinmi?  and 2) Had at least a few of the Cleveland DNP’s played, we likely would have had more than two players in double-figures.  If there’s any consolation, how often will Tim Duncan drain 7-of-9 free throws?  I mean, that was the difference-maker.  Cleveland’s free throw attempts: 16.  San Antonio: 30.  Done deal, pal.

Is it just me, or did this news regarding Kellen Winslow get a bit of a gloss-over yesterday?  If it wasn’t for my hellacious week, I would have mentioned it, but it obiously isn’t good – even if it may be a rumor.
