College Hoops Open Thread: OSU vs. Michigan, MAC Title Game

It’s the time of year when college basketball takes over all our lives.  That’s the case today as No. 1 ranked Ohio State takes on rival Michigan.  The Wolverines are playing well and have sewn up a bid to the dance this past week.  It will be a raucous and heated atmosphere in Indy as they tip off at 1:40.  The second particularly notable contest for NE Ohioans is the MAC championship game at the Q.  Kent State has had a tremendous season and will face rival Akron for an automatic berth.  This has become a classic rivalry game in this tournament at the Q and draws a great crowd as well.  Tip is scheduled for  6 PM tonight and the game will be televised on ESPN2.  We’re one day away from the bracket being set so leave your thoughts here as this afternoon of hoops plays out.

Jersey Retirement: Even On a Bye Week, Cleveland’s Josh Cribbs is Still The Man

He may not have been forcing opposing kickers to boot kickoffs into the stands, and he may not have been busting off a Wildcat formation first-down run over Joe Thomas and Eric Steinbach.  But even with the Cleveland Browns on their bye week, Pro Bowl return man and emerging receiving threat Josh Cribbs was making Cleveland fans proud as he spent his Saturday afternoon at Kent State University.

Six years removed from his Golden Flashes jersey, now making plays about 45 minutes north with the Browns, Kent State University retired Cribbs’ No. 9 jersey this past Saturday in front of thousands of fans who likely root for both teams.

And in typical Cribbs fashion, while he was to be the one to be on the recieiving end of said honor, the former quarterback turned the tables by coming armed with a $100,000 check in the name of the Kent State University football program – the amount which Cribbs estimates the school provided him through his four years with the team.

Kent State Getting Pounded Early

Pounding
Just a quick little March Madness update for the readers.  It’s currently halftime between UNLV and Kent State, and the Golden Flashes are rolling into the second period with 10 points.  Ten.

The Running Rebels hung a 31-spot on Kent, sinking 13-of-30 shots (43 percent).  By no means is 43 percent something to write home about, but with KSU converting on only 5-of-23, it’s enough.

Things can’t get much worse for Kent as they’re 0-7 from three-point land and 0-1 from the free throw line.  Not many shooting fouls to go around in this one so far, as UNLV has only had two attempts as a team.  The bad news for Kent is that they converted both opportunities.

Demetric Shaw Blows Up

Demetric ShawFormer Kent State University guard goes for 75 points – garners NBA attention

A very well-written piece about a former Kent State guard can be found over in the Dallas-Fort Worth Telegram.  Demetric Shaw, a 6’3″ point guard and former Homecoming King at KSU has made some headlines thanks to a 74-point outing in a basketball game that took place in Mexico – establishing a FIBA record.

Thirteen threes and 13 twos. Seventy-four points in only 35 minutes. He had 50 at halftime and had missed just three shots.

By the next morning, the phone was ringing off the wall, mainly calls from friends around the world, but also from agents. Those agents were in contact with NBA teams.

03/15 Morning Minute: It’s NCAA Inundation!

Kent State UniversityEverywhere you look these days, it’s NCAA hoops.  You cannot help but to catch some of the MAC Tournament action, given that it’s in our back yard.  It’s looking like a Kent State University versus Akron University finals, which is more than sure to draw a solid crowd today.  Neither team had a cakewalk to get where they are at this point.  KSU needed a buzzer-beater by MAC standout Al Fisher, and a few Akron ballers have some bumps and bruises to deal with as well.  Personally, I’m a bit glad I’m not downtown today as parking would be a disaster for us working folk.  However, you can’t deny the atmosphere is going to be amazing.  Flannery’s Pub will likely be able to pay their rent for the month of March on today alone…

The sad truth to all of this is that us Clevelander’s will have to be pulling for the winner of this tournament game, possibly along with Xavier, as the “Ohio” plays given last night’s Ohio State loss to Michigan State.  It’s going to take quite a bit of luck and/or reputation for the Buckeyes to get in to the Big Dance this year – unless the committee opts for five Big Ten teams, yet again.  Losing to Minnesota, Michigan and Iowa are going to hurt.  Big time.  Wisconsin, Purdue, Indiana and Michigan State are pretty much locks to get in.  Matta and Company could definitely be on the outside looking in come tomorrow night.
