While We’re Waiting…Browns Running Backs, Browns Optimism, Behind the Scenes With Kirk Herbstreit

A midseason report on the Browns RBs (not good): “To say that the running backs unit has fallen short of expectations would be an understatement. It’s not a talent issue, it is an injury issue. Hillis has basically only played in three games, and two of those games involves questionable usage of his abilities. Hardesty stepped in fairly well for two games before suffering an injury. Jackson never made it past the preseason with a turf toe.

If the Browns end up re-signing Hillis, all three backs will be back next year. I still have confidence in Hillis and Jackson, but it’s tougher to say with Hardesty given his injury history.” [Chris Pokorny/Dawgs by Nature]

Kirk Herbstreit Moves Out of Ohio Due to “Relentless” Criticism from OSU Fans

While some associated with Ohio State want to drive Jim Tressel out of Columbus, the pitchforkers will have to settle for ESPN analyst and OSU alum Kirk Herbstreit for now.  In this instance, however, it’s an entirely different bent of the pitchfork crowd acting out – those blind loyalists who feel there is no place in this world for criticism of Ohio State and its football team.

Herbie is moving away from his beloved home state to Nashville, Tennessee.  He said he has been considering the move for a few years now, the primary reason being the incessant criticism he receives from a loud minority of OSU fans in Columbus.

Needing more reps on the right side: “Last Saturday, the latest lineup on the Browns right side was rookie Shawn Lauavo at guard and offseason acquisition Tony Pashos at tackle. Both players missed the Aug. 21 game against the Rams. Lauavo played in the preseason opener against Green Bay with John St. Clair at right tackle. Meanwhile, it was the first game action for Pashos who has battled food poising and a shoulder injury during training camp. [...]

On Monday, Browns coach Eric Mangini was asked if Pashos and Lauvao would see more time in Thursday’s preseason finale because of the amount time already missed. Typically, first-team players like Pashos and Lauavo only play one series in the final preseason, but coach Eric Mangini said it is possible those two will play more against Chicago.” [Don Delco/The OBR]

WFNY Takes on the Greater Cleveland Sports Awards

Picture 018_medIt is not very often that a select number of Cleveland’s greatest athletes across amateur and professional levels get together on a night to celebrate sports as well as the city.  In fact, it only happens annually and the entire night is put on by the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission.  And as luck would have it, two members of WFNY were in attendance to take in the entire evening.

Attendance was said to be approximately 1,200 strong.  Given the amount of chairs that were placed at each table within the Grand Ballroom at the Renaissance Hotel, the estimates were not far off.  TD and I had great seats, seated with Jhonny Peralta and Campy Russell, respectively.  As one can see, Mr. Peralta was thrilled to be a part of WFNY’s big night out.  Campy shared many laughs with Austin Carr as both were looking forward to tonight’s contest with the Miami Heat.

“Any time those two get together, you know it’s going to be a good one,” said Carr. [Read more...]

Kirk Herbstreit Defends “The Photo”

A lot of anti-OSU (and anti-ESPN) folks love to point at the photo above.  If you haven’t seen it prior to today, the foreground is an interception at the 2003 Fiesta Bowl that featured The Ohio State University and the Miami Hurricanes.  The background, however, features ESPN analyst (and former OSU quarterback) Kirk Herbstreit celebrating the huge play on the back of former running back Eddie George.

While many will use this photo in attempt to show Herbie’s potential bias for the Big Ten or Ohio State in general, a recent interview with The Big Lead counters with the following: [Read more...]

The Bridge To Primetime

Those of us living in the Cleveland area will have a lot of time to kill this weekend prior to our duo of night games that will be the focus of millions.  You can use the sun light and spare time to do silly things like yard work, or you can get yourself a beverage of choice and watch a few other teams duke it out before ours grace the screen.

With that said, I thought it would be in all of our best interest to know what to expect this weekend as we wait for the eight o’clock hour to roll around not once, but twice.  Assuming you do not have television packages that allow you to view whatever you’d like, the following is for your viewing pleasure: [Read more...]
