For the Cavaliers, #1 Pick is All About Options and Opportunities

draft-lottery-2013Yesterday, as WFNY’s Scott Sargent was announcing his trial separation with the NBA Draft Lottery, I found myself nodding along in agreement as I consumed every word of it. Scott is exactly right. The Draft Lottery is the worst. It was kind of fun the first couple years, dreaming of top picks and thinking about potential. In previous years I’ve spent countless hours playing the lottery machine, reading about the top 2 or 3 prospects, and dreaming of what winning the top spot would mean for the team.

But the more time you spend wallowing in the murkiness of luck, lethargy, and the tantalizing siren song of the NBA Draft Lottery, the more you realize it’s not a scene you really want to be a part of. As much as I love seeing Nick Gilbert proudly represent the city of Cleveland and the Cavaliers franchise, I’d be perfectly content if I don’t see him on TV again until it’s on a podium holding a trophy.

And thus, shortly after Nick Gilbert told the national audience that he, too, was tired of being there, the Cavaliers won the #1 pick in the draft. And in doing so, the Cavaliers opened the door to a world of options and opportunities. The team may or may not be in the lottery again next year, but you have to believe that at worst Nick Gilbert will be sitting in the top row instead of his usual front-left spot on the stage. Draft Lottery Deals Harsh Reality to Cavaliers’ Dreams of Top 3 Pick

Nick Gilbert Reacts to the lottery disappointment

Holding onto optimism as a Cleveland sports fan is a dangerous proposition. After winning the lottery last season, seeing the Cavaliers pick Kyrie Irving, and watching him blossom into the runaway Rookie of the Year, cementing his status as a franchise PG worth building around, things were feeling good in wine and gold country.

So heading into last night’s lottery, a certain quiet, reserved confidence set in. Nick Gilbert was representing us with pride again while Joe Haden, Josh Cribbs, Bernie Kosar, and Kyrie Irving were all coming back to try to replicate both the luck and results of last year’s lottery. Cavaliers To Win Tonight’s Lottery According to Scientific Donut Eating Study

Before you think this is too silly, just keep in mind that last year, the genius basketball minds behind The Basketball Jones successfully predicted the Cavaliers would win the lottery.

They’re at it again this year, and this time around, they decided to use delicious breakfast pastries as their means of infallible prediction. In fact, using the word prediction might be an insult to the exactness of this study. Perhaps ‘future reporting’ is more accurate. Anyway, you can be the judge of what this means, but the results will make Cavalier fans happy as once again, the Basketball Jones is telling us that the Cavaliers will win the draft lottery tonight.

You can watch the video here.

Michael Kidd-Gilchrist on the Cavaliers Is the Stuff of Dreams

MKG and Kyrie have been teammates before

Next Wednesday, in New York City, 14 ping pong balls are going to be placed into a lottery style hopper. A series of 4 number combinations are going to be drawn, and those numbers will determine the selection order of the 2012 NBA Draft. With nothing else of substance going on with the Cavaliers right now, most fans are left with just their dreams of how the lottery might play out for our beloved wine and gold.

The lottery isn’t quite as important this year for the Cavaliers as it was last year. Last year, with 2 lottery picks and a complete lack of talent on the roster, the lottery felt like a do or die scenario. Now, the Cavaliers already have their franchise player, which alleviates much pressure.

Never the less, the lottery will be important in determining how quickly Cleveland can get this thing turned around. [Read more...]

NBA Lottery Odds Serve As Cruel Reminder of How Unlucky Cavaliers Could End Up

I mentioned this last season, but I want to reiterate this point again this season…

I hate the ESPN NBA Draft Lottery Machine. All it does is reinforce just how cruel the NBA lottery can be. You have a terrible team coming off a tough and frustrating season, and the only thing that can lift your spirits is the ability to draft a phenomenal young talent who can help reshape your franchise.

That’s not how it always works, though. Instead, you might see a borderline playoff team like Milwaukee or Houston jump into the top 3, bolstering their already modestly talented rosters while leaving the hurting franchises to lick their wounds while picking up only slightly better than moderately talented players. Hey, there’s always next year, right? [Read more...]

Cavs Win Coin Toss Tiebreakers for NBA Draft

Some good non-football news hit Cleveland today: The Cavaliers won a pair of tiebreakers to decide positioning in the NBA Draft. First, the team won a coin toss to break a tie with the Sacramento Kings New Orleans Hornets for the third spot, then via the Los Angeles Lakers pick, the team won another coin toss tiebreaker for the No. 24 spot. (Sorry folks, got confused with Kings recent win and Hornets in the tie. You all are the best.)

What this means for the early pick is that if neither team moves up to the top three in the lottery format, the Cavs are guaranteed to pick above the Kings Hornets. This assures Cleveland of picking no lower than sixth in the draft. Cleveland also won a bit of positioning with the Lakers selection, boosting the team’s offseason assets just a little bit more.

By the looks of it so far, last year’s luck might be riding the Cavs way again. Even Nick Gilbert was on hand for today, as Dan Gilbert pointed out on Twitter:

Fans will have to wait a while for the next possible bit of draft luck, however, as the lottery is not for another five weeks until May 30. Cavs will have 138 combinations out of 1,000 (13.8 percent) while the New Orleans Hornets will have 137.

Cavaliers vs Pistons: Let the Tanking Begin!

TANKING!!!

Welcome to Tank Fest 2012!

Ok, so no, I don’t think the Cleveland Cavaliers (17-30, 10th in the East) are actually tanking. Or, shall I say, losing on purpose. I believe Byron Scott is trying to get his team to play well, and I believe the players are (mostly) trying their hardest to win.

But with the news of Daniel Gibson’s torn tendon threatening his season, and with Anderson Varejao still some time away from returning, the fact is the Cavaliers right now aren’t deep enough and, quite frankly, not good enough, to win very many games.

Tonight’s game against the Detroit Pistons (17-32, 11th in the East), then, is a battle for draft position. If the Cavaliers lose tonight, which would be their 5th in a row, they would be tied with Detroit and looking to move up another slot in the lottery. [Read more...]

Open Thread: 2011 NBA Draft Lottery

Eighty-two games, 19 wins and a sizable trade later, here we are: watching the NBA lottery with something at stake, together, for the first time in this very site’s existence.

Two selections, combining for a 22.7 percent chance at landing the first-overall selection in the 2011 NBA Draft.  Feel free to run your mocks here; for an ultra-scientific version of said lottery, The Basketball Jones has you covered.

The comment field is yours for the having. Just remember the rules. Here’s to Nick Gilbert (and Joe Haden and Josh Cribbs and Bernie Kosar) bringing the city of Cleveland some much-needed luck as the combinations filter up in New Jersey.

SI: “Not Wise to Bet Against Dan Gilbert”

Sports Illustrated’s Michael Rosenberg’s latest piece chronicles the last 10 months of Cavaliers’ owner Dan Gilbert’s life.  Naturally, the piece starts with the comic sans-laced tirade that Gilbert-haters still bring up to this day.  However, as stated many times around these parts, the New Expression Cavaliers are focusing on the future and what has to be done to regain the title of perennial contender.

From watching his team crumble to trading Mo Williams for Baron Davis and the attempted trade with the Detroit Pistons that would have added at least another $15 million in salary, Rosenberg calls Gilbert “manic about winning,” even if it has led to some mistakes and insinuates that the win-at-all-costs desire is a good thing if you’re a fan of the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Catching Up With: Luke Jackson

Luke Jackson, Lottery Selection

Hey! Remember this guy!?  Apparently, he’s been hanging out in Memphis.

First off Randolph Morris and Luke Jacksonwere both at the workouts today. They are not going to be part of the Las Vegas team barring injury. Both players wanted to show the coaching staff how they are playing. I didn’t get to talk to Morris (he was still shooting when I had to leave) but Jackson told me he hopes to be back tomorrow because he feels he is a good fit on the team and would like to be invited back to training camp. As a former top 10 lottery pick, Jackson has struggled in his career but he showed today he can still hit the long ball when open. I don’t know if he will be invited to training camp however.
