Rumors of Cavaliers Involvement in Dwight Howard Trade Heat Up Again

According to NBA sources, the Cleveland Cavaliers are once again thought to be involved in a potential Dwight Howard trade. This time, the Cavaliers would theoretically be landing Lakers big man Andrew Bynum.

According to ESPN.com’s Ric Bucher:

The Cavaliers would land Lakers center Andrew Bynum for a package of draft picks and veteran power forward Anderson Varejao, according to one league source. The Lakers would receive Howard for Bynum. Orlando would get Varejao and draft picks. The source said this was merely the framework of a deal being discussed.

Obviously we’ve heard rumors like this before, so this isn’t exactly new territory being covered. But for what it’s worth, it sounds like there’s some smoke to this fire. Which, of course, means nothing is probably going to happen.

For the Cavaliers, though, it’s a chance to pair a top 5 PG in Kyrie with a top 2 center in Bynum. It’s a core that you have to believe you can build around and, frankly, gives you 2/3s of your own Big 3. It’s a risky trade for Cleveland and it throws a wrench in the rebuilding plan, but it’s probably a risk that makes too much sense to pass on for Cleveland.

Again, assuming these rumors are true.

Wojnarowski: Cavaliers Out of the Dwight Howard Trade Situation

Much of the past couple days have been spent focusing on the potential 3-4 team trade to get Dwight Howard from Orlando to Brooklyn. The Cleveland Cavaliers were expected to be the 3rd team involved in the trade, looking to acquire Kris Humphries and a first round pick for their troubles.

According to Yahoo!’s Adrian Wojnarowski, though, the Cavaliers are no longer involved in the trade discussions:

Not only is Cleveland out, but it sounds as if the trade itself seems to be falling apart, with the Magic and Nets now trying to focus on a deal just between the two teams:

As always, the Cavaliers have not and will not comment on this trade. Despite some ridiculous speculation that the Cavaliers were looking to facilitate this trade to “stick it” to LeBron by creating another Eastern Conference power, the reality of the situation is the Cavaliers were merely looking to add assets for nothing. When it became clear, though, that Kris Humphries wanted a longer deal than the Cavaliers were comfortable giving him, the Cavaliers walked away from the table.

Maybe the Cavaliers should have kept Luke Harangody around for this game, too.

On paper, the Cavaliers should have had a chance in this game. With Dwight Howard already out for this game with an injury, his backup Big Baby Davis went down with injury early in this contest. That should have cracked the door open for the Cavaliers to play a tough game and sneak out a win.

Instead, the Cavaliers fell behind by 20 early. A couple times they tried to go on runs, closing the gap to 9 points here, 12 points there. But every time, the Magic answered with a run of their own to expand their lead again. It’s easy, and perhaps appropriate, to blame the Cavaliers sluggish offense on this being their 3rd game in 3 days. But the NBA is no place for excuses, and really this was just an all around disappointing effort from the wine and gold.

Too many turnovers (17, compared to 6 for Orlando), poor shooting (37% compared to Orlando’s 45%), and just poorly executed half court offense plagued the team all day. Antawn Jamison returned to score 21 points, and Donald Sloan had a career high 15 points, but it’s hard to really highlight any positives from this game.

There are now 2 weeks left in the season, and the Cavaliers will be back to the grind Tuesday in Detroit. The Cavaliers played tough Friday and Saturday, so the weekend wasn’t all bad. But this will be a game to forget for Cleveland.

2010-11 NBA Blogger Previews – Southeast Division

Yep, it’s that time of year again already. Once again, CelticsBlog are hosting the annual Blogger Previews for every team in the NBA. How this works is simple, every day a certain NBA team is up and bloggers who write about said team will offer their previews for that team in the upcoming season. Then, once a division is completed, all the bloggers throughout the NBA who are participating will post links for all the previews for that division.

Next up is the Southeast Division. All the previews are linked below, and I encourage everyone to take a few minutes, click on the links, and check out what writers from across the nation are saying about their own teams. As a reminder, our preview of the Cavaliers’ upcoming season can be found here.

LeBron Rests His Body, While FanHouse Writer Rests His Mind

This is probably never going to stop. I’ve written this before, and I’ll say it once more, LeBron James never had a chance with the media. He had so much hype coming out of high school, that most people thought he could never live up to it. Instead, not only has LeBron lived up to it, he has so far exceeded it that he’s left little doubt to most as to who the best player in the game is. And all along the way he’s more or less done the right things and said the right things. He’s so conscious of his image that he’s almost overly cautious to say something that could be interpreted the wrong way. Because of all this, people have to invent drama and feign indignance in order to be critical of him to better serve their agenda.

If you don’t know who Tim Povtak is, he’s an NBA writer for FanHouse. Prior to joining FanHouse, he spent almost 30 years at the Orlando Sentinel. Evidently during that time he and Mike Bianchi spent some time rubbing off on each other. After writing an article last week titled “[Dwight] Howard Won’t Sit Like Kobe and LeBron”, he decided to follow that up with a completely irrational argument today. Povtak is saying that LeBron owes fans a “refund” for not playing against the Magic yesterday. [Read more...]

Cavaliers Preview Game #54: Magic at Cavs

Cavaliers vs MagicOrlando Magic (36-17) vs
Cleveland Cavaliers (42-11)

TNT/WTAM

Well, it was certainly fun while it lasted. This extended home stand will be ending shortly, but what is already over is the stretch of playing mediocre teams. Tonight begins a stretch of games against Orlando, Denver, at Charlotte, at Orlando, New Orleans, at Boston, and at Toronto to close out the month of February. The Magic struggled for a while earlier this year after their blazing hot start, but they’re beginning to get the heat back as they have begun to play some really great basketball. Delonte West will be a gametime decision, although Brian Windhorst seems to think there are some indications he will play, which makes me think he will. It would be nice if he could, because Orlando is a team that will flat out punish you if you’re not tough on your perimeter defense against them. This is going to be a great test tonight to see where this Cavaliers team really stands.   [Read more...]

Cavaliers vs Magic

Cleveland Cavaliers (4-3) vs

Get ready to continue the tour of misery portion of the 2009-10 schedule tonight. After a nice and much needed 4 day break, Cavaliers fans will pick up right where they left off. After being subjected to ESPN’s heavy handed approach to the proliferation of LeBron to New York innuendo last Friday, tonight we get to relive one of the most painful sports series we have ever been subjected to in Cleveland. Speaking as a lifelong Cleveland sports fan, I’m not sure any series loss has hurt more than the Magic series last year. I have never felt more sure that a Cleveland team was destined to win a Championship than last years’ Cavs team. So yeah, that one hurt. A lot. Now, tonight, I fully expect ESPN to pounce on the opportunity to show highlights and bring it up as frequently as they can because, well, it’s ESPN and beating storylines and talking points into the ground is what they do best. So brace yourself. Beyond that, the struggling Cavaliers only have to play a team that, despite not having Rashard Lewis, Vince, Carter, and Ryan Anderson for parts of this season still has been able to score points at will and is off to great 6-2 start. It could be a long night for the Cavaliers in Orlando.   [Read more...]

Cleveland Versus the World

lebron_hidingOn top of losing last night, I made a big mistake, I think.  I decided to spend the night with the sports bloggers of the world talking through the game on Twitter.  Basically every team was represented on there and the conclusion I came to is that everybody, and I mean everybody hates LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers.  Well, maybe not everybody, but really close.  It is strange though, because I was expecting a lot of analysis and interesting perspectives, and almost all there was was vitriol, hate and anger toward LeBron James.

The only team that didn’t seem hateful and angry toward the Cavaliers last night was actually all the bloggers from the Orlando Magic.  They were following the action, pointing out statistics.  Cheering when their guys made loads of threes and scolding their guys when they gave up runs to the Cavs.  Funny that I had to look to the opponent for even-handed treatment. ECF Game 4 Numbers and Words

Mo Williams Heartbreak. Despair. Disillusion. It’s all there. That game hurt. A lot. The Cleveland Cavaliers fell to the Orlando Magic 116-114 in an Overtime thriller in Game 4, and now trail the Magic 3-1 in the series. The situation is dire, for sure, but no matter how slim hope may be, the Cavaliers still have a chance to win this series. It’s up to Mo Williams to do it.

- I’m going to be more brief than usual today. There’s not much you can say about a game like this. I know it would be easy to be down on the Cavaliers, and I haven’t even read the Open Thread from the game last night yet out of fear of what I might read there. But know this. The Magic made 17 three pointers in a game twice this year, and they won those games by 32 points and 23 points. They shot over 40% from three 30 times in the regular season. They went 27-3 in those games, with an average margin of 13.93 points. They’ve shot over 40% from three in this series 3 times. In those 3 games, the Cavaliers have lost by one point, won a game, and took them to overtime before losing by 2 in the third. The Cavaliers are not playing awful. The Magic are just a great team, built for just this. They knew with this team that they could get on fire like this, and when they’re on, look out. 27-3 speaks for itself. So for the Cavaliers to have had a chance to beat them every time they’ve shot like this in this series speaks volumes for the way LeBron James has carried this team.

cavs-magic-game-4

“It is an ode to LeBron James’ greatness that the Cavs have been within two points in three games in this series. Seriously, the fact that the Cavs could have won all four of these games is just as high of a line on James’ resume as his last conference finals series. He’s having one of the best series in the history of the NBA and the Cavs are trying to avoid a five-game sweep. If you can appreciate it but you probably can’t. Do you realize how tough of a shot he made on the 3-pointer inside 10 seconds in overtime. That’s almost as hard of shot than he made in Game 2. Folks, he’s averaging 43 points a game in this series. Did you read that? He’s averaging that on 50 percent shooting.” [Brian Windhorst/Plain Dealer]

Cavaliers Season On The Line Tonight

Cleveland Cavaliers

As the Cleveland Cavaliers get set to take on the Orlando Magic tonight in Orlando, the team finds itself yet again in an unfamiliar position with their backs against the wall. To call this game a “must win” might be a little strong, but it’s in the ballpark. The Cavaliers’ scenario for winning this series is simple. Win both remaining games at home in the Q, and find a way to win one of the two remaining games in Orlando. So even if the Cavaliers lose tonight, in theory they still just have to win Game 6 in Orlando and protect home court. This shouldn’t be too hard for a team which only lost at home twice in the regular season and which tied for the 2nd best road record in the league. You wouldn’t think it would be, anyway. But to this point in this series, it has been.      [Read more...]

ECF Game 2 Numbers and Words

LeBron JamesIf you think that shot was huge last night, just imagine how history will view that shot if the Cavaliers are able to achieve their goal this season. It happened in a flash. It was a moment that has a chance to alter destiny. It was a singular shot that changed the mindset of an entire city. It was the difference between despair and hope. Between desperation and redemption. It was simply everything that is great about sports, and even if for one night only, LeBron James gave us all a sense of optimism and belief that the Cavaliers can somehow fix their defensive issues and overcome the Magic in this series. The 96-95 victory was a moment that none of us will ever forget. You can read Craig’s recap of the game here, but what follows is my analysis in numbers and words.

- I can honestly say that I have never been so unsure how to feel about a series. This series could easily be 2-0 Cavs, 2-0 Orlando, or the 1-1 tie that it is. Any of those scenarios are not only plausible, but likely. The Magic are a contested 3 from Rashard Lewis/missed wide open 3 from Delonte West/missed touch jumper off a tipped jump ball from Mo Williams away from being down 0-2. On the same note, the Cavaliers are a miracle shot from LeBron away from being down 0-2. Two games, two one point victories for teams decided on last second shots. Both games it was the Cavs who had to take the last shot trailing by 1 with just 1.0 seconds left. Wednesday it was Mo Williams who took the shot after LeBron won the jump ball tip back to him, but that shot just missed going in. Last night, it was LeBron who took the shot off the inbound pass from Mo, and it was LeBron who once again saved Cleveland from itself. Just a remarkable series so far.   [Read more...]

LeBron James Redefines “The Shot”

lebron-james

(Magic – Cavs box)

Friday night, the Cavs and Magic continued the Eastern Conference finals in very different positions than they started.  Prior to the series start, the Cavs were the presumptive Eastern Conference champs, if not NBA champs in many people’s mind.  Even the pre-series interviews between John Thompson and LeBron James included questions about the potential matchup of LBJ and Kobe.  Of course LeBron didn’t bite on the question, but still, the fact that it was asked at all is very telling.  So quite obviously the national press and Cavs fans were just blown away when the Magic “stole” game one in Cleveland.  After much flagellation and analysis, game two finally arrived and ended in magical fashion.  This time the magic was on the side of LeBron James and the Cavs instead of the team from Orlando. Cavs Game 2 – Open Thread / Chat

Just wanted to get this open thread set up for everyone.  Like last time, I think I will be available to set up the live chat.  Will the Cavs make giant adjustments? Will they just play better? Will the Magic be able to keep up that hot streak of shooting from the second half of game 1? Which bench players will we see from the Cavs this game that didn’t play in game 1?

If you can’t get to the game, be sure to spend it with us here at WFNY.

If you can’t spend it here, check out our various twitter accounts down the right hand sidebar of the site. Well, except Denny’s. He is a dirty dirty boy with his tweets. :-)

Talk to you guys later!

Calm Down Cavs Fans

lebron-sadThis isn’t a guarantee of anything at all.  The Cavs might continue to play as badly as they did on Wednesday, drop the next three games and get swept out of the playoffs.  It might happen.  I don’t know.  But there is something that I do know.  It has only been a single news day since the Cavaliers dropped game one to the Magic, but I can’t believe all the crazy things being written right now.  And believe me when I tell you they are crazy.  Everyone has a theory and a way to make wholesale changes to the Cavaliers and their strategy in order to somehow help them find away to compete with the Orlando Magic.  Calm down people.  You are all panicking.

The Cavs do need to make some adjustments.  They need to adjust a few matchups.  They need to potentially play a more even paced game so they don’t burn themselves out as they seemed to have done in game one.  These are the little things that an NBA team changes from game to game during the season too.  But they are just little things. If you’re like me, you find it hard to even remember the last game the Cavaliers played. In this postseason so far, the Cavaliers have practically been sitting around doing nothing just as long as they have been playing actual games. In other words, the Cavaliers really haven’t felt any pressure, or weariness from the playoff grind, or intensity of tight playoff finishes. None of that. For the Cleveland Cavaliers, the 2009 NBA Playoffs begin tonight. We’ve all heard the rest vs rust arguments, and tonight we’ll see just how sharp (or not) the Cavaliers managed to keep themselves over the 9 days they’ve gone since last playing. If you take out the throw-away final game of the regular season in which the Cavs gave most of the starters the night off, the last team to beat the Cavaliers was the Orlando Magic all the way back on April 3rd. That game was a 29 point loss for the Cavaliers that wasn’t even that close. The Magic are 2-1 against Cleveland this year, have won 4 playoff games on the road, and rose above most peoples’ doubts and expectations to knock off the defending champs on the road in Game 7 last series. The Magic aren’t scared of the Cavaliers one bit, and they don’t even feel like they should be the underdogs. Their confidence is at an all-time high right now. So buckle up, Cavs fans….for the first time this postseason, the Cavaliers are about to enter a dogfight.   [Read more...]

The Cleveland Cavaliers can feel it. Home court advantage throughout the Eastern Conference Playoffs is right at the tip of their fingers, there for the taking. With only 5 games left on the road, the vast majority of the rest of the season will be spent in the soothing comfort of The Q, where the Cavaliers are 29-1 on the season. Overall, the Cavs are experience a winning season unlike anything we’ve ever seen in the history of this franchise. The Cavs have won 22 of their last 27 games. Since the All-Star Break the Cavs are 8-2 on the road and 13-2 overall. Most of that has been done through various injuries to starters (Z, Wallace, West) and reserves (Szczerbiak, Kinsey, Pavlovic) alike. Whereas past versions of the Cavaliers would have sulked and let their play on the court suffer while nursing injuries, this year’s team has shown an uncanny ability to stay focused and pick up their game where they are lacking due to injury. It hasn’t always been pretty, it hasn’t always been easy, but home court is theirs to have if they would just reach out and take it. The Cavs are 3.5 games clear of Boston (4 in the loss column), and all they really have to do is win out at home. If the Cavs can do that, they will be the top seed in the East. It begins tonight with Orlando in town.  [Read more...]

GAMBLOG Picks Of The Week

GAMBLOG LogoPicks Of The Week – February 11, 2008

Well, Matt didn’t believe me that he was nuts last week, and now he doesn’t believe me again that this game has disaster written all over it for the Cavaliers. Obviously it’s a large spread, but when you look at the history of teams on the road at the back end of back-to-games against the spread, combined with the injury situation of the Cavaliers and the recent success of the Magic against the Cavaliers, and it looks like a sucker’s bet. But the first rule of gambling is that when everyone and their mother is going one way, the smart bet is to go the other way….and that’s exactly what Matt has done. This is truly an unfortunate time for the Cavaliers to be injured. It’s hard enough playing back-to-back games when the first game is at home and the second is on the road, but when you factor in the lack of depth that is plaguing the Cavaliers it’s tough to see how this one could have a positive outcome. The Cavaliers are taking on one of the rising powers in the East and it would be nice to show the Magic that they still have work to do if they want to top the Cavaliers, but as it is, I’m just hoping the Cavs can find a way to produce a decent showing in this one.
