Connecting the dots between a possible Kansas City-Miami trade that might affect the Browns’ plans with the No. 6 pick in the NFL Draft: “The connections between the Chiefs and the Dolphins, with regard to [Branden] Albert, have been present for awhile. Now, they possibility could be coming closer to being a reality. On Thursday, Arrowhead Pride passed along the information that the Chiefs had given permission to the Dolphins to speak to, but not meet with, Albert.” [Chris Pokorny/Dawgs By Nature]

Hadn’t heard this one before. Are fans excited enough by this? “Mark Price is the best available head coaching candidate for the Cleveland Cavaliers. This is not a question of nostalgia, but rather a matter of practicality and reality. Price, while by far the most popular Cavalier in the history of the franchise, has the playing experience and success to demand respect, the technical expertise to help mold a young team’s skills, and the background of having worked for and with some of the most accomplished head coaches in the history of the NBA.” [Cleveland Jackson/Stepien Rules] [Read more...]

Houston’s Daryl Morey digs up Cleveland roots in Twitter Q&A

Houston Rockets number-devouring wunderkind Daryl Morey, doing what social media-friendly executives do, entertained some friendly question-and-answer on Tuesday afternoon. Those who are not well aware of Morey’s roots, graduating from Medina’s Highland High School in 1990, may have been surprised by his responses to a few childhood inquiries.

Morey went from Highland High to Northwestern to MIT to STATS Inc. to general manager of the Houston Rockets in the matter of 16 years. While his career path may not relate to many of us, his childhood heroes sure do.

Cleveland Sports Life Boat – Cavaliers Point Guards

Sometimes I make bad graphics using PowerPoint. @dgriff13 and @cre8ive_juice eat your hearts out.

Sometimes I make bad graphics using PowerPoint. @dgriff13 and @cre8ive_juice eat your hearts out.

I am a huge fan of the Ron and Fez show on Sirius XM Satellite radio. They do a bit on the radio called life boat, and I’m borrowing it for Cleveland sports. Here’s how it works. There are four people and only three seats remaining on the life boat. You must work your way through the list of candidates and, unfortunately, someone is designated to try their hand at long-distance swimming.

A couple rules.

1. You MUST pick three people to ride in the boat. “Let them all drown!” isn’t an interesting answer and frankly, you’re not funny. It’s been done, so skip it.

2. Don’t use an overly silly premise for your answer. Life boat is a silly enough premise where you aren’t going to “wow” anyone with your take that you should “keep the fatter guy because at least when we turn to cannibalism, we’ll have someone tasty to eat!”

So, the first Cleveland sports life boat is Cavaliers point guards. The candidates are:

Mark Price, Terrell Brandon, Andre Miller and Kyrie Irving

Kyrie Irving wins 2013 3-Point Contest

The Kyrie Irving All-Star extravaganza continued on Satruday night as the Cavs’ point guard was crowned the 2013 3-point contest champion.

Irving scored 18 in the first round and 23 in the finals to defeat the Spurs’ Matt Bonner who finished with 20. In the last year and a half Irving has been crowned MVP of the Rising Stars Challenge, Rookie of the Year, and is now the 2013 3-Point Champion.

The last Cavalier to win the 3-Point contest was Mark Price, who won back to back titles in 1993 and 1994.

Unearthing a Cavaliers Time Capsule

Back at the beginning of May, I came across an interesting piece from Paul Lukas of Uni-Watch and ESPN fame. The article was about a sports fan named Andy who had lost his job and decided to sell some of his childhood sports memories to help with bills. Read the back-story here.

The condensed version of the story is this: when he was a kid (late 80′s, early 90′s), Andy wrote to a ton of major league sports franchises asking for autographs, stickers, or anything they were willing to send. He got answers back from 16 teams. He saved whatever they sent in the original envelope and stored them away.

And now he was selling them on eBay. [Read more...]

Kyrie Irving: Where do we go from here?

Los Angeles Lakers center.  Green Bay Packers quarterback.  New York Yankees center fielder.  Cleveland Cavaliers point guard.

These are all positions that carry with them the weight of decades of legendary figures.  Kyrie Irving was taken with the first pick overall this week by the Cleveland Cavaliers.  He was instantly compared to recent first pick point guards John Wall and Derrick Rose.  He’s apparently not as quick or athletic as those two but a better shooter.  Many don’t expect him to as good as those two – Rose is, after all, the MVP.

But let’s slow down for a minute.  How will Kyrie stack up against the point guards of Cavalier past?

Without Joe Tait, I May Not Be a Cavs Fan Today

I was 4 years old during the ‘Miracle of Richfield’ season. My fan-dom certainly did not begin there. In fact, it wasn’t until I was in high school did myself, or my dad for that matter, really begin to follow the NBA at all.

I do remember listening to the radio down in the basement when I was a kid. We had a fabulous basement for a little boy. It was big and open, and had a cement floor. I was allowed to ride my bike down there, bounce the basketball or just play around with the exercise equipment. Often I would just watch my dad work at his workshop. (For the life of me I have no recollection of him actually finishing a project, but that’s another story.)

As I rode my bike or played whatever imaginary game my mind conceived of I would sometimes listen to Tait call the Cavs games. I remember hearing the names of World B. Free, Roy Hinson, Mel Turpin and John Bagley. It wasn’t until Price, Daugherty, Nance and Hot Rod though that I became a fan of the Cavs.

At age 14 I got my first job. We’ll be nice and leave out the names of the guilty so as not to cause any child labor inquiries. I worked evenings and couldn’t watch the Cavs from the kitchen of the restaurant. I was allowed to bring in a radio however, and listen to the Cavs while I did the dishes or prepped food for the following day.

And that is where my affection for the Cavaliers, and Joe Tait began. [Read more...]

Looking Back: The 1986 NBA Draft

Its dark days as a Cavaliers fan. The team has lost Anderson Varejao for the year and have been in a two month free-fall. Losers of 19 of 20, the Wine and Gold have gone extra-young, giving big minutes to like likes of Manny Harris and Christian Eyenga. Samardo Samuels, an undrafted rookie from Louisville, has seen himself go from after-thought to rotation member as well. All of this points to mucho ping pong balls in next year’s NBA Draft Lottery.

This harkins me back to 1986, undoubtedly the greatest draft day in Cavs history. On draft day, the Cavaliers scored a coup, trading with the Philadelphia 76ers for the rights to the Number One pick. They sent over starting PF Roy Hinson, a nice player, but no All-Star. With the pick, they had the opportunity to draft College Basketball’s most electrifying player, Len Bias, but instead, went the safe route, taking Brad Daugherty, a Center from North Carolina. Mark Price and Brad Daugherty Headline Cavs NBA Jam Roster

With the legendary arcade game NBA Jam being updated and released for the Nintendo Wii, a lot has been made about what players will make the respective rosters.  And while LeBron James and Shaquille O’Neal are no longer options in Cleveland – rendering the image to the right useless; sad, but useless – we become privy to the news that Cavalier fans will be able to add a little history to their gameplay.

Cavs History Book – Mark Price Trade

Mark PriceYesterday on Twitter, I got into a conversation with some bloggers for the Washington Wizards.  (TruthAboutIt and BulletsForever) As anyone who has ever surfed YouTube knows, one thing leads to another and you eventually end up in a completely foreign place from where you started.  Somehow talking about the Cavs eventually led to talking about how the Cavs inadvertently ruined the Bullets by trading an old, injury-prone Mark Price to them. I say that in jest of course, because someone in the Bullets obviously decided it was a good enough deal to pull the trigger.

That led me to wonder what, exactly, did the Bullets send to the Cavaliers for Mark Price?  After failing miserably finding the answer on Wikipedia and other places, I found it exactly where I should have looked in the first place.  It was in a post on BulletsForever that was exploring their own history books remembering Robert Pack.  Then I was linked to another post on TruthAboutIt that also goes into detail on it.  I found my answer . Cavs Channel Their Inner Mark Price

Brad Daugherty ThrowbackThe Cleveland Cavaliers are no strangers to rolling out merchandise for the masses.  While Nike produces countless colorways of the LeBron James shoe line, the Cavs provide fans with a slew of apparel to don on any given night; the biggest item of which comes via the jersey.

Last season, the Cavs not only wore their standard versions of wine, blue or white, but they also wore “Hardwood Classics” wine/gold as well as a “Cav Fanatic” royal blue version that still confuses most fans.  This year’s Fanatic jersey was mentioned a few weeks ago.  But thanks to Paul Lukas (via V to the G) we see that this year’s Hardwood Classic may be one of the best jerseys to ever feature the Cavs name on the front.

While We’re Waiting… Avoiding the Browns, Tribe Training Staff, and the USC Non-TD

tim-couch-jersey-quinn-shaqNo love for both of our buildings? “Though the Cleveland Browns were able to lure to town today a couple of players with connections to coach Eric Mangini (safety Ray Ventrone and guard Billy Yates), multiple sources have told us that some agents plan to steer their clients away from the Browns.  Right or wrong, there’s a sense of discontent regarding the new regime in Cleveland, where coach Eric Mangini and G.M. George Kokinis are running the show, with Mangini serving essentially as the man in charge.

As one source explained it, the Browns likely will be required to overpay free agents in the offseason.  If the money that Cleveland is offering matches the money on the table from another team, the thinking is that the players will be far more inclined to sign with the team not named the Browns.” [Pro Football Talk]

The Price Will Be Right For Some Team

priceTrue story- I was working at a sports themed restaurant near the Richfield Coliseum during the Cavs run in the ’90s. We had nearly the entire team come in at various points each year, but a few players came in quite often. Larry Nance was a near regular. Jay Guidinger was a frequent guest (and by the way one of the nicest basketball players ever). Mark Price was my favorite Cavalier (probably still is) and he came in one day along with GM Wayne Embry and their wives. The waitress serving them had no idea who any of them were, but was told that “the guy over there is Mark Price, one of the Cavaliers.” She proceeded to call Wayne Embry Mr. Price all afternoon. The group thought it was hilarious and let her believe that Embry was in fact Mark Price. That was the day I shook Mark’s hand and looked him right in the eye. Yes, I discovered I was in fact the exact same height as Mark Price.

That story has really nothing to do with the next, but it is my Mark Price story, so I thought I’d share it. With that said, it seems that Price has gotten the itch to coach. We know that he has been a shooting coach with both the Grizzlies and the Hawks, but apparently the NBA’s best free throw shooter would like to do more. Like head coach.  [Read more...]

The enigma of Christian Eyenga  as illustrated by the illustrious Brian Windhorst: “The team’s decision to select him in the first round last month was a complete surprise that created a number of questions that turned out to have complex answers. Then over the last week at the Vegas Summer League, Eyenga showed off some tantalizing skills that raised eyebrows everywhere from the Cavs’ staff to European teams who may have their own designs for his immediate future.” [Cleveland Plain Dealer]

10 Most Beloved Cleveland Sports Athletes

Shaq is coming to town. He’s a pretty popular guy. I was inspired by the trade and our friends at the Ghosts of Wayne Fontes. The idea here is the most beloved Cleveland sports athletes of my time. Figure a starting point of 1980. (I was 8, and really that is about the earliest I remember following the scene closely.) These are not my favorites, just the ones that I think the city embraced the most. Hence the most beloved.  So here we go-

1. Bernie Kosar- If LeBron James signed a 6 year contract extension tomorrow he could leap-frog Bernie I believe. But Bernie was the real deal. He wanted to play quarterback for the Cleveland Browns. It was his dream. He wasn’t a very graceful player, and he had terrible mechanics, but he was one of us. Much of that has come to light in the last few weeks with the attention he has gotten over his finances. Make no mistake- during the mid to late ’80s Cleveland was Bernie’s town. Songs were written. Boys were named for him. When he was unceremoniously dumped mid-season it cemented his place in our hearts. He never wanted to leave. He was run out of town by his coach.

2. LeBron James- Simply put the most talented athlete ever to wear Cleveland across his chest. [Read more...]

What Being a Cleveland Sports Fan is All About

APTOPIX Yankees Indians BaseballThere were a lot of things that made me sick this weekend:

  • The Cavaliers lackluster performance in Game Six.
  • The fact that at the end of the game, TNT decided to show another montage of the history of Cleveland Sports heartbreaks, starting with Red Right 88 and heading all the way to the ’07 3-1 ALCS collapse of the Indians against eventual World Series Champion Boston Red Sox.
  • Knowing that Tomo Ohka is on the Indians roster.
  • The stomach ache I suffered after picking up Chinese  food from Ho Wah.

But in reality, the worst thing was the makeup of the crowds at both Friday and Saturday night’s Tribe/Yankees games. I was lucky enough to be in a box for Saturday’s tilt where CC Sabathia made his return to the mound at Progressive Field. (SIDE NOTE – I refuse to call it a “loge.” Nobody outside of Cleveland uses that word, therefore it is minor league.) Two things struck me.

I expected to see some sort of reaction when CC took the hill in the bottom of the first inning. Boos or cheers, I wanted to see something from the Tribe fans. Outside of myself and four others, nobody made a sound either way. It was very odd. (FYI – If you boo CC, then you should have your ticket revoked. The big man gave us everything he had and did noting but throw bouquets at our city and fans.) Then I realized why – the Jake (I also refuse to call it “Progressive Field”) was packed to the gills with Yankees fans. I’m telling you, it was nauseating. Walking in, I saw more Jeter and Joba shirts than I saw Sizemore and Martinez. I saw more pinstripes than Chief Wahoo’s or script I’s. More Navy than Red, White, and Blue. [Read more...]

While We’re Waiting… Daugherty’s Debate, Gilbert Among the Best, Wedge…Not so Much

brad-daughertyWhile We’re Waiting aims to be the round-up of the recent WFNY-esque information for your morning viewing. Have something you think we should see? Send it to our tips email in the sidebar.

Brad Daugherty prefers the 1991-92 t-shirt: “And as LeBron James leads today’s Cavs toward what could be the franchise’s first NBA title, Daugherty is often asked how his team would fare against James’ team. “There’s no doubt about it,” Daugherty said with a hearty laugh. “We’d win by 20 or 30.”

Does he really believe that?

“No, but it’d be a heck of a game,” said Daugherty.” [ESPN Regional Media]

Notorious Cavs Video: “More James Than Worthy”

It takes a special kind of fan to use a lyric-packed hip-hop song from roughly 10 years ago as a way to pay homage to today. However, when you use a track featuring a group that actually hails from Cleveland, perhaps you come up with some extra points.

Fan videos are a dangerous thing. Sometimes, they’re very creative and humorous. Other times, they can be downright awful and then stuck on the Internet forever for all to dig up when needed. I’ll let you all decide where this one falls along said scale.

Your “Notorious Cavs” video is after the jump: [Read more...]
