Update Your Wish Lists…

The A’s are closing in on a deal with the Rockies that would send star outfielder Matt Holliday to Oakland from Colorado, SI.com has learned. The players Colorado would receive are not yet known.

Holliday is due to become a free agent after the 2009 season.

All in all, it would have been pretty costly to bring Holliday to Cleveland.  This also likely takes Huston Street out of the mix as well, assuming he’s one of the pieces moved to Colorado.

If there’s a silver lining here, I think it’s that Holliday will do a lot less damage in the bay area than he would have had he fell on to the roster of the St. Louis Cardinals or Philadelphia Phillies – both rumored to be interested in his services.  It will be interesting to see what Holliday can do at McAfee Coliseum as it is one of the biggest pitchers park in baseball.  Have fun with all of that foul territory, Matt.

Holliday Rumors Not Going Away

Matt HollidayBuster Olney Unsure Deal Is Possible

We might as well get used to hearing the Indians and Rockies trade rumors, at least until Matt Holliday and/or Garrett Atkins are dealt elsewhere or the Indians make a different deal. Otherwise, these rumors are going to keep swirling. And why shouldn’t they? A deal between the Indians and Rockies just makes too much sense for both teams to not happen, or to not at least talk about.

One person, though, who isn’t so sure a deal makes sense for the Rockies is ESPN’s Buster Olney. In his blog today, Buster writes about some potential complications involving trading a franchise player like Matt Holliday,   [Read more...]

More Matt Holliday Talks

While the Indians dropped two-of-three in Kansas City, the talks regarding now-injured Matt Holliday are being thrown back into the mix.  This time, from Denver’s own Woody Paige:

Holliday would be a significant addition for Cleveland, and the Rockies also could send best friend Garrett Atkins or Brad Hawpe.

In exchange, the Rockies could seek starting pitcher Cliff Lee (8-1, 1.88 ERA and four superb pitches), a middle reliever and an outfield prospect. The Rox, depending on the second player in the deal, play Ian Stewart at third or in left, and Ryan Spilborghs becomes a full-time starting outfielder who could be the next Holliday.

Or, consider: The Rockies acquire Cleveland pitcher C.C. Sabathia, who got off to a terrible start before settling. It would be 2007 Cy Young winner for MVP runner-up.

Left Fielders, Where Art Thou?

With whispers of Tribe boycotts brewing, I thought it would be topical to discuss one of the latest posts over at MLBTradeRumors.  Almost answering my unspoken prayers, they broke out a list of the latest left fielders that could have some trade potential over the next few weeks.

It’s very nice of them to list the Indians as about one of three or four teams that are desparately in the market for some hitting from the seven-slot.  Of course, you have some of the ”regulars” in Jason Bay and Matt Holliday.  A name that intrigues me is Pat Burrell.  The guy is just a masher, as long as we don’t need him to help us out much in the batting average department.

Check out the list and put your thoughts below.  Is there anyone on there that you think we should make a play for?  Good news is, if everything else falls through, Kenny Lofton is still unsigned.*

*can you smell the sarcasm?

Someone Has to Win the Central…Part 4

I came up with this idea for a series of guest blogger spots over a week ago. When it first came to me the Indians were in second place behind the Twins. Then they swept the A’s to take over first. Now, it’s the White Sox turn at the top. With all these teams bunched together the A.L. Central is wide open, with no team out of it. We asked bloggers from each team to tell us why their team WILL WIN the A.L. Central. Most of them replied reluctantly, because the baseball in the Central just hasn’t been that good this year. Part 1- Tigers, Part 2- Royals, Part 3- White Sox. Up next is the home team…

Wow. I envisioned this being easier to write. Coming off consecutive sweeps, the Tribe limps home for a series with the Rangers, and the hottest hitter in baseball- Josh Hamilton. The Indians are 4.5 games behind the White Sox, and currently only a game ahead of Kansas City, two ahead of the Tigers. Chicago actually has the largest division lead in the Majors at the moment, but certainly not an insurmountable one.

So, why will the Indians win it? Let’s start with the obvious- the best starting staff in the majors. That’s right- all of baseball. [Read more...]

Matt Holliday? An Indian?

Matt HolidayThough Benny Francisco has done extremely well since his call up to the bigs, there is no denying the fact that the Indians need to make a move on the offensive side of things.  We’re in the midst of some of the best pitching in recent years, and to not capitalize would be a huge blown opportunity.  To expect zero earned runs over the rest of the season is just silly, so why not move while we have the upper hand?

We’ve seen the names Xavier Nady, Jason Bay and Ken Griffey Jr. tossed about these parts as possible acquisitions.  But how about adding a new one into the mix: Colorado Rockies outfielder Matt Holliday.  Yes, the runner-up NL MVP, currently sporting a .925 OPS Matt Holliday.  You have to be a pretty big fan of the game to know of this guy’s history as a player, but he has quietly been one of the best in the bigs for the last several years.  Oh, and his name would look excellent in an Indians jersey – even if he couldn’t wear his #5 (Lou Boudreau).

But why would one of the best players in the league be up for grabs?  Well, after losing the World Series to the Red Sox last season, the Rockies have struggled out of the gate and could be one of the first teams to enter the market with some talent for sale.  And talent this is.  Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal has the goods.
