Final Mock Draft from Mel Kiper says CB Dee Milliner to Cleveland

ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. released his final mock draft today, and with the sixth pick he gives the Browns CB Dee Milliner-

“The Browns are really desperate for another corner to play opposite Joe Haden. If they get Milliner, that’s a solid No. 2 option, also allowing them to move Buster Skrine inside to cover the slot, a position where he’s far better. The need for a pass-rusher could certainly have them engaging in some debate here, but Milliner provides assurances. There’s been talk that the Browns could move in either direction on the board, so plenty to wait for on that front as well. And yes, I do believe a QB such as Geno Smith could be in play here.”

Kiper has mocked Milliner, Bjoern Werner, Chance Warmack and Geno Smith all to the Browns in various versions of his mock draft. The top spots on both Kiper and Todd McShay’s board changed today from Luke Joeckel to Eric Fisher.

With rumors flying that the Raiders, Jaguars and Eagles could all be interested in trading out of the top 4 picks, this draft is wide open.

ESPN Cleveland: John Hughes was in demand

The John Hughes pick has been slammed pretty universally ever since it occurred during the Browns’ 2012 draft. Hughes was even the subject of some pretty negative and difficult questioning by Kevin Kiley during his late (he overslept) appearance on their show this morning. Now the other sports talk station, ESPN Cleveland, has dug up some info that could shed some light on why they Browns made their pick and felt lucky to get Hughes. Will Burge has the report.

A league source tells ESPN Cleveland that Hughes would have been selected before the end of the 3rdround if the Browns had not selected him. The source said that Hughes had been fielding calls from multiple teams indicating they would select him with their third round pick. The Browns just pulled the trigger first…

It seems as though Heckert had a right to be concerned. The source also said the New Orleans Saints, who owned the #89 pick in the draft, were going to take Hughes if he was there. The Saints ended up selecting Regina defensive lineman Akiem Hicks, who is almost the exact same size as Hughes.

Maybe this explains why Tom Heckert was so dismissive of questions surrounding the pick and how much of a “reach” it might have been. It is certainly a compelling report, and if accurate just goes to show how much difference there can be between draft experts in the media and the front offices of NFL clubs who must make the picks.

When They Miss the Playoffs, the Browns Really Miss the Playoffs

We all know that the Browns and their 4-12 record missed the playoffs, but it had me thinking.  Are there even any influential players left in the playoffs that are former Browns?  Obviously guys playing special teams for San Francisco are important like Blake Costanzo are important, but I’m excluding guys like that.  I mean like real, bona fide starters and difference-makers.  I think the list says an awful lot about how the Browns have drafted since 1999.

One of the best names on the list that my Twitter followers helped me come up with is New York Giants guard Shaun O’Hara.  He debuted with the Browns in 2000 after being undrafted out of Rutgers.  He ended up in New York via free agency and even at 34 years of age he would have been a welcome addition to the Cleveland Browns roster.  Another Shaun… Rogers that is is active down in New Orleans for the Saints.  The Browns are fine with big dudes on the defensive line and they willingly waved goodbye to “Big Baby” because of the financial situation involved.  Other than those two, maybe Vickers?  Lawrence Vickers is playing in Houston and has probably been massively overrated by Browns fans.  Still, to think they couldn’t still use him on this roster is most certainly false.  So that’s three players. Anyone else? [Read more...]

2011 NFL Draft: WFNY Roundtable, Part V

Hey, look! A new Browns player. And today, we get at least two more…

Scott: Now that the dust has settled in the first round and the Browns have two second-round picks, where do they go from here?

Let us assume that offensive line, pass-rushing, defensive backfield and a wide receiving option or two is still deemed a “need.”  Despite our wildest desires to satisfy all of these holes with one or two picks, some of these positions will be pushed back until at least Saturday.  Something has to give… [Read more...]

Browns Enjoy Flexibility at the Six Spot

In contrast with the NBA, the prevailing notion over the past decade in the NFL draft is that the number one pick is a burden.  It saddles what is already a terrible team with an unproven player, often a quarterback, that uses up a disproportionate amount of the team’s cap space.  Browns fans know this as well as anyone – watching their team consistently miss at the very top of the draft has left the team languishing for a decade.

The past two drafts, however, the Browns found themselves at the 5 and 7 spot with the overwhelming front office and fan favorite targets – Aaron Curry and Eric Berry – off the board and just out of reach (missing out may have worked out for the best, but there was certainly an unsatisfactory feeling on draft day when they came off the board).  This April, the Browns once again find themselves in that exact range, with the 6th overall pick.  While we’re right in the heart of the evaluation process, with the mix of needs and prospects for teams choosing around them, the Browns should have a ton of flexibility on draft day to either fill a position(s) of need or move picks.

The NFL Draft: Best Athlete Available or Position of Need?

With the 5th pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, the Arizona Cardinals select OLB Von Miller.

And just like that the Browns are on the clock. But what should they do?

Using Mel Kiper’s latest mock draft strictly for the purpose of establishing an order, we see that Fairley, Bowers, Newton, Green and Miller are off the board. Mel has the Browns selecting J.J. Watt, DE from Wisconsin. That would certainly fill a need, but is Watt the best player available? Is he even the best player available that fills a need?

The Browns will certainly be taking a hard look at Watt, as well as other defensive linemen such as Marcell Dareus and Robert Quinn. Wide receiver is also a need however, and many say that Julio Jones’ excellent performance at the combine may have vaulted him up draft boards.

It has been inferred that the Browns might not be opposed to taking one of a few top tier defensive backs as well, even though that isn’t perceived as a big area of need. Guys like Patrick Peterson and Prince Amukamara could potentially give the Browns the best young CBs in the league paired with Joe Haden.

So who would I like to see the Browns select? [Read more...]

NFL Trade Rumors: Kevin Kolb to Browns Back Again

Kevin Kolb and the Browns have been linked in trade rumors now for almost a year.  These rumors first kicked up at the beginning of last offseason when it was still unclear if the Eagles would continue on with Donovan McNabb or make the move to the younger Kolb.

Once the Eagles decided to move McNabb, the Browns became linked in those potential trade rumors but McNabb landed in Washington.  The Eagles had made their move and the storm had passed.  When Kolb suffered a concussion to start the season, however, and Michael Vick subsequently lit it up, the Browns were allegedly on the phone within 24 hours inquiring about Kolb and these rumors once again hit the press.

They’re back again and the impetus for the rumors this time around is Kolb’s statement last week that he wants to start in the NFL, and if that is not going to be the case in Philadelphia, he wants out.   [Read more...]

NFL Draft: Browns Defensive Backs

The most glaring weakness the Browns have has to be in the defensive backfield. Last year the secondary was 29th out of 32 in passing yards allowed. They surrendered 22 TDs through the air- and that includes the 4 game winning streak at the end of the season. As Scott pointed out in our Holmgren Report on the DBs, this group is in severe need of an upgrade.

NFL Draft: Beanie Wells Disputes Injury Rumors

Beanie WellsIn what could possibly be the quickest way to ever mention a potential injury, Peter King buried a sentence on former Ohio State running back Chris “Beanie” Wells in his latest MMQB that claimed teams are “scared off” by a potential foot injury.  Given Wells’ injury history and the fact that many consider this to be his biggest risk, a forefoot injury would not be something to boost the draft stock of the Akron, Ohio native.

Thankfully for Wells’ wallet, it appears that these rumors are completely unfounded and that old No. 28 is ready to go.

“Beanie was examined by [orthopedic surgeon] Dr. James Andrews in January and was given a clean bill of health,” said agent Adam Heller. “There are no issues with the toe and he’s 100 percent. He rushed for 1,200 yards and has since posted the best broad jump at the combine and a 4.38 in the 40 at his pro day.”

NFL Trade Rumors: Braylon Wants Fitzgerald Money?

braylonedwardsAll of the rumors that have circulated regarding Braylon Edwards and the New York Giants (first reported by The OBR, weeks ago) continue to find new winds as the NFL Draft nears.

The basis behind the trade is that if Braylon Edwards does not agree to a contract extension – as the team does want him to be a part of the future – that they will look to ship him off to a team that could use his services.  In return, the Browns are looking for at least a first- and third-round draft choice; using the Roy Williams/Dallas Cowboys deal from last season as a benchmark.  (Detroit received a first-, third-, and sixth-rounder for Williams)

With that said, it appears that both parts of this formula appear to be at a crossroads of sorts.
