Game Recap: Jackets’ Train Keeps Rolling with Fourth Straight Win

We’re in uncharted waters. This is the best start ever for Columbus. I can’t find a better way to say it than that. After a three-games-in-four-days road trip through California in which Columbus went 3-0, it would have almost been OK (or at least understandable) if Columbus had come out Monday night—after just one day off including traveling 2,500 miles—a little flat. But, all credit to coach Scott Arniel and the guys as they were not only ready to play, but ready to dominate. “I think we had the same mentality as the road games,” said Captain Rick Nash. “We forget about our last game. We were just worrying about tonight against Nashville and that’s why I think we played so well.”

And Nash has been one of the main reasons, earning the NHL’s First Star of the Week last week. Nash carried the offense on the road trip, and was a big reason for the win last night. He’s earned points in nine straight games, and kept his goal-scoring streak going as well. Steve Mason did the rest, stopping all 27 shots that he faced to earn his first shutout of the season and the second straight shutout for the Jackets.

The Week That Was

This Week: 1-1-0, 2 points
Overall: 1-1-0, 2 points (t4th division; t8th conference)

It’s not really fair to post standings at this point, as in the division all teams have played either one, two, or three games. So, tied for fourth in the division is basically two points out of first. Likewise, two points is tied for 8th, but also tied for 13th, and also two points out of first. But, 5-Holes is 5-Holes, and the format has always worked for me. At any rate, the season has begun! The Jackets are back in the States after their trip to Sweden. They split two games with the San Jose Sharks—one of the best teams in the league—so the early returns are decent.

The Summer That Was

Regular Season: 32-35-15, 79 points (5th division; 14th conference)
Playoff Result: did not qualify

This is a pivotal season for the Jackets. Expectations were high (in this space as well) heading into last season. Coming off of their first playoffs appearance in 2009 and having seemingly addressed their biggest needs in the off-season, the Jackets looked primed to improve in ‘09-‘10. As we know now, the wheels fell off the wagon entirely, and we enter the ‘10-‘11 season with a new coach and system, and a whole new set of expectations. Training camp started on Friday, September 17th, and the Jackets are now four games into their exhibition season under the guidance of new coach Scott Arniel, whose new up-tempo system has looked good at times, and also has shown some areas for improvement.

A New Beginning?

In the spirit of the Browns’ new beginning tonight, I thought I’d take this opportunity to highlight what might be a similar new beginning. I would take the same results, anyway. The Blue Jackets called up #1 goaltending prospect Steve Mason, and instead of him backing up struggling Fredrik Norrena he was thrust onto the NHL stage Wednesday night as Norrena “tweaked a groin” in morning skate [Read more...]

Last week, I led this paragraph with “Ugh.” This week, we’ll lead with a much louder and longer UGGGHHHHH! FYI, “T14th conference” is the same as saying DEAD LAST. The Jackets played and won a very nice game last Tuesday night against Vancouver, and promptly went directly into the tank and lost three straight, two of which were home games. [Read more...]

Ugh. The Jackets finished their first road trip last Tuesday, and then opened their home schedule last Friday. They looked flat and listless in San Jose, but did come home with some fire for the home opener. [Read more...]

Before we look back at last week, it is important that we look forward as we’ve finally (FINALLY!) gotten to the point in the season where actual news happens, and actual action is taking place. Tonight is the first exhibition game of the 2008-2009 season for the Blue Jackets. They will be in Chicago playing the Blackhawks tonight at 8:30 EDT, followed by another game tomorrow night in Minnesota. This is the first look at the new-look Jackets. Check the “Up Next” section below to see their full pre-season schedule.
