Cavaliers Try to Snap Losing Streak at Five

The Cleveland Cavaliers (17-31, 11th in the East), losers of 5 straight and 8 of their last 9 since their impressive mini win streak against Denver, Oklahoma City, and Houston have now officially fallen behind Detroit in the standings and have Sacramento square in their sights.

The Cavaliers’ next opponent, the Milwaukee Bucks (23-27, 9th in the East) and in the middle of a chase of their own, trying to track down the New York Knicks for the 8th spot in the East. The last time these teams played each other was right after the Monta Ellis trade. Ellis didn’t play in that game, but the Bucks have gone 4-3 with Ellis in the starting lineup. However, they have lost 3 of their last 5 overall coming off a season high 6 game win streak. So it’s been an up and down fight for the Bucks as well.

Ellis was supposed to be the extra piece to push the Bucks into the playoffs, but Ellis has struggled adjusting to a new team and a very different system. With the Warriors, he was averaging 21.9 points, 6.0 assists, and 3.4 rebounds, but so far in Milwaukee he’s averaging just 15.1 points, 5.7 assists, and 2.7 rebounds. His 3pt% has dropped from .321 to .143 and his overall FG% is down from .433 to .410. [Read more...]

Cavaliers Take On Short-Handed Bucks

Cavs hope to fare better vs Milwaukee this time

One of my absolute favorite Cavaliers games of all time happened February 22, 2008.

One day earlier, Danny Ferry made one of the biggest and most important trades in team history. He had traded away Larry Hughes, Donyell Marshall, Drew Gooden, Shannon Browns, Ira Newble, and Cedric Simmons for Ben Wallace, Wally Szczerbiak, Delonte West, and Joe Smith.

The trade was stunning, and ultimately lead to the most successful run of basketball in team history (in the regular season, anyway). But because Ferry traded away so many rotation guys, it left the Cavaliers a little short handed. You see, Wallace, Szczerbiak, West, and Smith didn’t arrive in Cleveland until literally moments before tipoff[Read more...]

Kyrie-less Cavaliers Play Milwaukee In Battle of Could-be 8-seeds

Jackson and Jennings, the Odd Couple?

The Cleveland Cavaliers (10-14, 10th in the East) will once again try to win without the services of Kyrie Irving. The rookie PG and growing team leader and developing impact player will miss all of this weekend’s games as he tries to recover from his concussion.

Friday night, it will be the Milwaukee Bucks (11-14, 8th in the East) who will visit The Q to try to do what the LA Clippers could not. The Cavaliers will once again be without Irving and starting SG Anthony Parker, but they will certainly be relieved to welcome Tristan Thompson back into the lineup. [Read more...]

Killer Loss Puts CSU Vikings Behind Eight-Ball

If Gary Waters was told that Norris Cole and Tre Harmon would combine for 49 points, he’d ask, “where do I sign up?” If Gary Waters was told that he would get 13 unexpected points off the bench from SG Josh McCoy, he’d be beyond thrilled.

Waters would assume that with those contributions, his team would end up on the winning side of the coin. Instead, his front court was completely worked over and the team once again was killed on the glass, causing a devastating 87-83 home loss to Milwaukee. Its just the second time the Vikings have lost at the Wolstein Center this season.

And they couldn’t have had worse timing.

The loss sends CSU into a tailspin, which could ultimately result in the Vikings going from hosting and grabbing the top seed in the Horizon League tournament to third place. I [Read more...]

……..God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference. I don’t mean to make light of a useful tool in the recovery of addiction, but the Cavaliers need guidance in their recovery from a post-LeBron hangover. There are some things that can be changed, and the Cavaliers need to make them. If you take the 35 points the Cavs scored in the 2nd half of the Spurs game and combine it with the 37 points the Cavs scored in the first half of the Indiana game, and you have a stretch of 4 quarters in which the Cavaliers scored a total of 72 points. The Cavaliers didn’t even cross the 50 point plateau until 1:43 was left in the 3rd quarter. They went the entire 1st quarter with a total of 2 points from their backcourt. TWO POINTS! The starting backcourt of Mo and AP was scoreless for the entire first half. Mo Williams attempted a total of 2 shots in the first half. For the game the Cavaliers got a total of 32 points from their starting lineup, with new starter Joey Graham setting the pace with 11 points. Those 11 points made up 34% of the starters’ scoring. When 34% of your starters points equals 11 points, you have a problem on your hands.

And yes, the Indiana Pacers are a quality team with an extremely solid core of Danny Granger, Roy Hibbert, Darren Collison, and Mike Dunleavy. So lets not forget to give them credit for the way they played and defended. But that culture of winning I preached about in the offseason looks like it’s gone. There was no fight in the eyes of the Cavaliers last night. They rolled over and just took it. And combined with the bad 2nd half performance against San Antonio, along with some other lethargic performances already this season, I’m beginning to worry that this team is already losing their edge. How they come out and fight at home tonight against a struggling Milwaukee team will tell us a lot about where this team is mentally, and where they are headed mentally. [Read more...]

Make It Five

LeBron JamesThe Cavaliers followed their M.O. for this season-start out well, play lackluster for the middle portion of the game, then turn it on and take over the game in the 4th quarter-to take down the Milwaukee Bucks and extend their winning streak to 5.

Milwaukee 93, Cleveland 99 [box]

Well, it’s starting to look like some trends are starting to become routine. This Cavaliers team knows hot to win, we can give them that. They know how to beat the the teams they should beat. The Cavaliers still don’t have a bad loss on the season, but other than their thrashing of the Mavericks in Dallas, they also don’t have any great wins. Sure, Indiana is much improved and the rally to beat the Bulls in Chicago was nice, but lets not get too excited about wins over Charlotte, Chicago twice, Indiana, and Milwaukee.

What we can get excited about, though, is that the Cavaliers are now 6-2 and they stand alone atop the Central Division. The Cavaliers already have a 5 game winning streak. Last season, their longest streak was five, and that only happened once, in the month of January. This team looks leaps and bounds ahead of last year’s team, but this year’s team also still has a lot to improve on.   [Read more...]

The Cleveland Cavaliers put their 4 game winning streak on the line this evening as Mo Williams will face his old team for the first time when the Milwaukee Bucks bring their new look roster into the Q. The Bucks will be shorthanded as team captain and fellow Redeem Team member Michael Redd will miss this game with a sprained ankle. Last year, the Cavaliers dropped 3 of 4 against the Bucks, with Mo Williams being especially effective in averaging 26.0 points per game against Cleveland. Now, Mo is in the wine and gold, and the Cavaliers look to get off to a better start against Milwaukee than they did last year.     [Read more...]
