MTAG Coming To A Theater Near You

morethanagame-2A few months ago I was lucky enough to check out the US premiere of the STVM documentary More Than A Game in Silver Spring, MD. If you’re new to the site, I recommend reading some of our past articles about the film – I did a three part set with a film review, interview with the director Kris Belman, and an after-party/discussion session wrap.

The film has had a slow roll-out in theaters over the past few weeks, starting in Akron, LA, and New York and spreading to select markets last week. Kris emailed me yesterday letting me know the film is out in DC and asked if I could spread the word – consider it done, friend. In addition to showing in a few theaters around our nation’s capital the film is also around 40 or so cities this weekend. [Read more...]

And in this corner… “The notion that Mangini should lose his job anytime during this season or in between this and the next, is ridiculous and irresponsible, not least because as long as the carpetbagging anglophile Lerner maintains ownership of Cleveland’s most cherished public trust, a coach in the mold of Mangini might be our only hope.  Anyone who disagrees might at least ask first, is there anyone who deserves a greater benefit of doubt than a man trying to rebuild Randy Lerner’s Browns?”  [Cleveland Frowns]

LeBron James Takes Over France (Video)

What do you get when you combine LeBron James with Mickael Pietrus, Tony Parker, Drake, Lil Wayne, Kanye West, Eminem and a ton of French NBA fans?  Well, as long as you have a high definition recording device and excellent editing abilities, you get a pretty sweet video.

After the jump, check out James’ tour stop in Paris complete with on- and off-court action all mixed to the lead track from the MTAG Soundtrack (“Forever”).  Also make sure to check out Pietrus’ t-shirt, which would have been that much better had the Cavs topped the Magic last spring.  Even if you’re not a fan of hip-hop, the video is great – especially the clip at the very end.  A few rounds of Great Lakes to Skeets for the find.

Check out the OSU Fan Cans: “Officials at dozens of colleges are upset over the latest marketing campaign launched by Anheuser-Busch. It features cans of Bud Light emblazoned with local teams’ colors. The cans, which come in 27 different color combinations, don’t bear any team’s name or logo, but college administrators contend the promotion will contribute to underage and binge drinking and give the impression that the colleges are endorsing the product.” [Jay/Wiz of Odds] [Deadspin] [JerseyChaser]

You know what’s bad about fightin in a basement? 1) You’re fightin in a basement.

LeBron 2010 compiled the photos coming from Nike Basketball’s Twitter account at the More Than A Game court day in Akron yesterday.  The Akron custom shoes are included, and well, they don’t look very good. [Lebron2010.com]

I really hope we don’t have the next Kellen Winslow on the Buckeyes. “In a players-only meeting Saturday, the seniors broke the news to their Ohio State teammates: The next day, they would be confiscating all electronics.  Cell phones, iPods, video game systems … hand ‘em over. The cable hookups were taken out of the walls of the team hotel.  To members of a generation accustomed to being in constant communication, this did not go over well.  “They weren’t real happy about it,” senior kicker Aaron Pettrey said. “A lot of them thought, ‘How’s this going to make us better football players?’ ” One player posted on his Twitter page: “They really bouta turn this camp into da military.”"  [Ken Gordon, Columbus Dispatch]

brady-quinn-derek-anderson

I want you smothered, want you covered like my waffle house hashbrowns: “The NFL average for completing passes in the 1-to-10 yard range is 67.0 percent. Anderson was at 54.2 last season.  In his three years with the Browns, the stats on those passes have been going down for Anderson: 63.0, 57.9 and 54.2.  [...]  Anderson has not been above 60 percent since 2006, when he played five games for the Browns. In his Pro Bowl season of 2007, he was at 57.9 throwing to the sure hands of Kellen Winslow and Joe Jurevicius, not just the sometimes unreliable Braylon Edwards.

What’s the big deal about passes in the 1-to-10 yard range?  In most games, about 55 percent of the passes are 10 or fewer yards. Consider that 155-of-285 (54 percent) of Anderson’s attempts last season fell in that category.” [Terry Pluto/Plain Dealer]

More Than A Game Tour Stop – District of Columbia

soul-journey

LeBron’s film tour made its first stop in Chicago earlier this week, and came to DC last night for stop number two.  The film was shown at the Regal Cinema in Gallery Place and was attended by John Thompson Jr, Carmelo Anthony, and Kevin Durant among others.  Today, the tour held pickup games and a kids’ camp at H and 11th Ave NW.  (It’s still open until 6 if you are in DC and scurry on over to Metro Center).  The day also served as a sports camp for local DMV kids.

Reader/commenter/goatee enthusiast Eli stopped by to check things out and sent in these photos.  Included are some of the stadium treatments, the Chicago custom LeBron VIIs (which I could do without) and the DC VIIs as well (which I absolutely love).  Eli’s take and more photos after the jump. More Than A Game: Q & A with “The Guys”

This is the final piece on the experience at the Silverdocs Film Festival.  In case you’re late getting here, to gather context you can catch my review of the film from Tuesday and Wednesday’s interview with the filmmaker.  After the screening of the film on Monday night, there was a Q&A session with the film subjects, filmmaker Kris Belman, and Producer Harvey Mason Jr.  The session was moderated by NPR’s Michele Norris.  This is my recap of the Q & A, as well as some photos from the after-party (though nothing really exciting, as I left the open bar after-party to go home and write my film review – lame!)

WFNY Interview with: More Than A Game Director Kris Belman

Kris Belman and LeBronYesterday I posted a film review of the Kris Belman’s STVM documentary More Than A Game, which had its US premiere at the Silverdocs Film Festival in Silver Spring, MD.  In said review I promised two more follow-up pieces.  This is one of them.  I got a chance to catch up with Kris on Tuesday morning, after seeing the film Monday night.  Kris is a native of Akron and graduated from Walsh Jesuit High School.  We talked for half an hour, about everything from his film, the ’97 World Series, Macbooks not going to sleep properly (I’ll spare you the details), and life as a Cleveland fan in LA.  Below is how our conversation unfolded.

Denny: So you went from Northeast Ohio where you grew up, and transferred to Loyola Marymount in LA for film school.  You had kind of a small fish in a big pond situation, catching a lot of flak from people, so you wanted to show these people that there’s something worthwhile in Ohio.  What made you pick these guys?

Kris Belman: Well, it’s funny because the first thing I did after I transferred in, is nobody from that school was from east of Arizona – I think maybe they’d been to Vegas, but whatever – the first thing I did was buy a book on Ohio and I tried to learn all these Ohio facts.  I started spitting out all these ridiculous facts like I knew Cincinnati is the number one exporter of caskets, which is probably not something we should brag about, but I knew that.  I was going with that for a while – all these stupid facts and then I was like “I need to find something tangible here, this is absurd.” [Read more...]

WFNY on the spot: LeBron-umentary U.S. Premiere of “More Than a Game”

The U.S. debut of Kris Belman’s film documenting the rise of the “Fab Five” basketball players from Akron St. Vincent St. Mary’s was held Monday night at the Silverdocs Film Festival in Silver Spring, MD in front of four sold-out theaters.  Denny was on hand to witness the event and offers up his film review here.  This is the first of three pieces WFNY will run about the film.  Parts two and three will follow tomorrow and Wednesday.

More Than A Game Ticket

Six years ago we all heard of the juggernaut of a basketball team that was hooping it up at SVSM.  We knew about LeBron James, the kid who outdueled Carmelo Anthony in a game against Oak Hill academy as a junior.  We knew that they moved their games to the University of Akron arena to increase seating capacity for home games.  We knew a bit about his teammates, but it was largely LeBron and his supporting cast (hey, that sounds familiar).  Luckily for us, there was someone along for the ride – and that someone had a camera. LeBron James: Cover of GQ’s February Edition

LeBron James GQIf Howard Stern considers himself the “King of All Media,” I would love to know what LeBron James would be.  Not all that long ago, we touched on the movie that chronicled his grade school/high school team titled More Than A Game.  Of course, he has “The LeBron’s.”  And then just yesterday, we touched on the upcoming commercial featuring James sporting a Cleveland Browns jersey.

But with all of this coverage on screens of all shapes and sizes, the Cavaliers’ small forward will also appear on next months coverof Gentlemen’s Quarterly – or “GQ” as the kids call it.

Obviously, being on the cover of a national magazine has its own merits.  [Read more...]

LeBron James: More Than A Game

While we continue to be inundated with the everpresent debate between Cleveland, Ohio and New York, New York, those of us that are on the Ohio side have a documentary to look forward to. More Than a Game is the title of the film which chronicles the high school careers of LeBron James as well as his friends that accompanied him on his team at Akron’s St. Vincent-St. Mary.

Or, as one could also put it: Business LeBron helped create a film about Athlete LeBron, but it started while he was Kid LeBron. A very Wise LeBron move. [Read more...]
