Urban Meyer calls out rest of Big Ten for shoddy recruiting

With a consensus top-three recruiting class 1  under his belt after just one full year with the Ohio State Buckeyes, the university’s head coach of football is now attempting to light a fire under the rest of the Big Ten who did not bear as much fruit on the recruiting trails.

“It’s not only important, it’s essential,” Meyer said of improved conference recruiting in a radio interview with 97.1 The Fan out of Columbus. “It has to happen.”

Brady Hoke and the Michigan Wolverines fared well with a top-10 class, the Nebraska Cornhuskers were the only other Big Ten school to amass what many considered to be a top-35 group of incoming freshmen. In contrast, the SEC — Meyer’s old conference — racked up 14 of the 33 five-star recruits in the country which led to 12 of the 13 schools being listed among the top 30.

Among the bigger signings of Meyer’s National Signing Day were wide receviers James Clark, Corey Smith and Dontre Wilson. The school also nabbed running back Ezekiel Elliot, the St. Louis native who runs the 40-yard dash in 4.4 seconds.

“I don’t know enough about what goes on in the other programs,” said Meyer. ”I know I have a lot of respect for the tradition and their historical success they’ve had,” Meyer said. “But we do need, as a conference, to keep pushing that envelope to be better. [...] And I think all our conversations, we’re going to have a Big Ten meeting here in a week … and our whole conversation needs to be, ‘how do we recruit?’ When you see 11 of the SEC teams in the top 25 in recruiting, that is something we need to continue to work on and improve.”

This was a great story about Kyrie’s amazing impressions this summer: “Kyrie Irving, 20, has a politician’s poise and polish, and he left USA Basketball’s pre-Olympics summer training camp with every endorsement that mattered. ‘Kyrie always impresses me,’ USA Basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski said. ‘This week, he’s been who I think he is, which is one of the top guards anywhere.’ Make no mistake: this wasn’t just Duke’s legendary coach glowing about one of his former Blue Devils. When it comes to judging the next generation of USA Basketball talent, the program’s top management and current stars agreed, Irving is the clear star in waiting. ‘For me, Kyrie Irving has definitely stood out more than anyone,’ LeBron James told CBSSports.com.” [Ben Golliver/CBS Sports] [Read more...]

Ohio State-Linked Sex Offender Arrested in Violation of Parole

The Twitter-crazy man who had allegedly been the reason for the decommitment of an Ohio State football recruit has been arrested in violation of parole stemming from his registration as a sex offender in the state of Kentucky.

Charles Eric Waugh, 31, met recruit Alex Anzalone and several other recruits following the Ohio State spring game on April 21 where he took several pictures and posted them on his Twitter page that has since been taken down. Anzalone reportedly had no knowledge of Waugh’s background when that photo was taken. After learning he was a registered sex offender, one who had pleaded guilty to five counts of possession of underage sexual content in 2008, Anzalone — with the support of his father — pulled his commitment to the Buckeyes.

Waugh, who also sent many messages to current players and recruits via Twitter, was in violation of Kentucky Revised Statute 17.546, which states sex offenders will not knowingly or intentionally use social networking services to interact with a person who is under the age of 18.

Sal Anzalone, the father of Alex, said while is son is still decommitted from The Ohio State University, the Buckeyes are not totally off the board. He also backed off of his original comments that “something was not right with Ohio State.” Anzalone is presently one of the top linebacking recruits in the country.

Quote: Urban Meyer on the type of players he wants

“I don’t go out and recruit a certain player. I recruit the best player, and competitive nature, his desire to win, is without question the most important thing. I used to be into, ‘Is he a three quarter [throwing motion]? Does he have four fingers on the laces or five?’ I don’t care anymore.”

“Will he choke you to win a checker game? If he does that, I’ll take him.”

That sounds just like the kind of linebackers the Buckeyes need next season.

While We’re Waiting… Lugo Deal Off, Ranking Recruits and Picking the ‘Best’ of the New Browns

No Lugo- “A little over a week ago, it was reported that the Indians had agreed to terms on a Minor League contract with veteran infielder Julio Lugo. He was to join the long list of non-roster invitees in camp with the Tribe this spring. The deal is now apparently off.

Cleveland did indeed come to terms with the 36-year-old Lugo, but the contract is not going to come to fruition. The specifics behind why the deal fell apart are not known. Considering the sides reached an agreement on terms (he would’ve earned $650K plus incentives if on the Major League roster), I’d speculate that it had something to do with his physical. All that really matters is that Lugo will not be heading to Arizona for Spring Training with the Indians. For those keeping track at home, that means the Indians have 20 non-roster invitees in the fold for this spring. Lugo would’ve competed for a bench job — given his experience around the diamond – but his chances of cracking the Opening Day roster seemed slim from the start.” [Bastian/MLB.com] [Read more...]

While We’re Waiting… John Lucas on Tanking, LeBron James Commercials, and Ohio State Recruiting

John Lucas CavaliersHey…it worked: “John Lucas and LeBron James will be involved in the same NBA game Saturday at the Staples Center. For Lucas, it’s 6 ½ years too late. During the 2002-03 season, Lucas was coach of the woeful Cleveland Cavaliers. He believes team brass had a mission to lose enough games to get a shot at James, then a hot-shot senior 40 miles down the road at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in Akron, Ohio. “They trade all our guys away and we go real young, and the goal was to get LeBron and also to sell the team,” Lucas said in an interview with FanHouse. “I didn’t have a chance. … You can’t fault the Cavaliers for wanting to get LeBron. It was hard to get free agents to come there.” [Chris Tomasson/NBA FanHouse]
