Ohio State Rebounds with Win Over Michigan State

The Ohio State men’s basketball team rebounded from its first loss of the season to defeat the Michigan State Spartans 71-61 last night at Value City Arena.

It was the primetime game of the night in front of a sellout crowd, the third of the season, as Brent Musburger and Dick Vitale were in the house to call the game.  Coming off their first loss of the season and a subsequent fall from their number-one ranking, it was expected that the Buckeyes would respond at home with a victory over a Michigan State group that has been team turmoil in this entire season.

The preseason second-ranked Spartans had lost five of seven games coming into last night.  With a streak of embarrassing efforts against the bottom of the conference, it appeared that the train had gone completely off the tracks and they had given up on head coach Tom Izzo.  [Read more...]

Ohio State Holds On Against Michigan; Positioned for No. 1 with Duke Loss

While the Cavaliers struggled to avoid being doubled up this week, the second-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes improved to 17-0 last night with a 68-64 win over Michigan at Crisler Arena.

The current undefeated record represents the Buckeyes’ best start since the 1990-91 season.  As has been the case in football this century, Ohio State has dominated the Wolverines on the hardwood, with last night being their 12th win in the last 14 games against UM.

Michigan has an above average team this year at 11-6 with a few quality wins and no terrible losses from a very hard schedule.  The Wolverines, playing the No. 2 team in the nation just a few days after falling in OT to the No. 3 team in the country, showed some impressive fight from the under eight timeout to the final buzzer and gave their fans something to cheer about down the stretch.

One of these fans was new head football coach Brady Hoke.  [Read more...]

Could Ohio State Be a #1 Seed?

Evan Turner

In six short weeks, the Ohio State men’s basketball team has gone from an unranked team (uncertain on when its best player would return) to the number 6 team in the country and Big Ten regular season champions.  The Buckeyes are 21-4 with probable national player of the year Evan Turner healthy and in the lineup.  OSU finished its season on Tuesday with a win over Illinois and already clinched the #1 seed in the Big Ten conference tournament which starts a week from today.  But can the Buckeyes clinch a #1 seed in the NCAA tournament?

What’s a Matta with Buckeye Basketball fans?

We haven’t addressed the Ohio State basketball team very often here at WFNY, an oversight we hope to correct. I asked good friend Danny Holbrook to get us up to speed with the new Buckeye basketball recruits…

Recently some friends and I were discussing the one and done of a lot of prep stars in the game today, a friend stated to me ” how can Matta keep bringing in guys who only stay a year and bolt for the cash and fame of the league? Are you kidding me? Has it been that long ago that we had to sit through Jim O’Brien’s great recruiting of such buckeye legends as Will Dudley, or Zack Williams’s maybe the worst shooting form since the Iraqi Navy? How about before that when Randy Ayers would hand out scholarships to everyone with at least two felonies on his resume. Go back even farther to Eldon Miller who took Troy Taylor and Ronnie Stokes over Gary Grant, uuuugh. [Read more...]
